Thermal switching provides an effective way for active heat flow control, which has recently attracted increasing attention in terms of nanoscale thermal management technologies. In magnetic and spintronic materials, the thermal conductivity depends on the magnetization configuration: this is the magneto-thermal resistance effect. Here we show that an epitaxial Cu/Co$_{50}$Fe$_{50}$ multilayer film exhibits giant magnetic-field-induced modulation of the cross-plane thermal conductivity. The magneto-thermal resistance ratio for the Cu/Co$_{50}$Fe$_{50}$ multilayer reaches 150% at room temperature, which is much larger than the previous record high. Although the ratio decreases with increasing the temperature, the giant magneto-thermal resistance effect of ~100% still appears up to 400 K. The magnetic field dependence of the thermal conductivity of the Cu/Co$_{50}$Fe$_{50}$ multilayer was observed to be about twice greater than that of the cross-plane electrical conductivity. The observation of the giant magneto-thermal resistance effect clarifies a potential of spintronic multilayers as thermal switching devices.

Magnetic skyrmions are localized, topologically protected spin-structures that have been proposed for storing or processing information due to their intriguing dynamical and transport properties. Important in terms of applications is the recent discovery of interface stabilized skyrmions as evidenced in ultra-thin transition-metal films. However, so far only skyrmions at interfaces with a single atomic layer of a magnetic material were reported, which greatly limits their potential for application in devices. Here, we predict the emergence of skyrmions in [4d/Fe_2/5d]_n multilayers, i.e. struc…

Spintronics exploits the magnetoresistance effects to store or sense the magnetic information. Since the magnetoresistance strictly depends on the magnetic anisotropy of the system, it is fundamental to set a defined anisotropy to the system. Here, we investigate by means of vectorial Magneto-Optical Kerr Magnetometry (v-MOKE), half-metallic La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) thin films that exhibit at room temperature pure biaxial magnetic anisotropy if grown onto MgO (001) substrate with a thin SrTiO3 (STO) buffer. In this way, we can avoid unwanted uniaxial magnetic anisotropy contributions that may b…

Recent fabrication of atomic precision nanodevices for spintronics greatly boosted their performance and also revealed new interesting features, as oscillating magnetoresistance with number of atomic layers in a multilayered structure. This motivates the need to go beyond the usual theoretical approach of semi-classical continuous layers. Here the simple tight-binding dynamics is used to describe quantum conduction in a multicomponent system with spin-polarized electrodes separated by an ultrathin and atomically coherent non-magnetic spacer (either metallic or insulating). A possibility is ind…
The in-plane dynamics of ferrimagnetic Co/Gd multilayers are investigated by means of ferromagnetic resonance, magneto-optical Kerr effect and SQUID magnetometry. The power absorbed from these multilayers is strongly temperature dependent. For example, the resonant peak for a (Co 40 A /Gd 40 A)8 multilayer vanishes approximately 50 K below room temperature. We have further investigated Gd/Co/Gd and Tb/Co/Tb trilayers with different thicknesses of Gd (5-7 A), Tb (1-7 A) and Co (30-40 A). At room temperature, these Co-based trilayers show a shift of approximately 600 Oe at 24 GHz in the uniform …

Spin-orbit torque (SOT) provides an efficient way to achieve charge-to-spin conversion and can switch perpendicular magnetization, which is essential for designing novel energy-efficient spintronic devices. An out-of-plane SOT could directly switch perpendicular magnetization. Encouragingly, field-free perpendicular magnetization switching of a two-dimensional (2D) material WTe2/ferromagnet (FM) bilayer has been reported recently, but the working temperature (200 K) is below room temperature. Here, we report the field-free perpendicular magnetization switching carried out at room temperature o…

Room-temperature operation is required to integrate skyrmionic synapses in practical future devices. Here, we numerically propose a nanoscale skyrmionic synapse composed of magnetic multilayers that enables room-temperature device…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically-protected spin textures that exhibit fascinating physical behaviors and large potential in highly energy efficient spintronic device applications. Exchange-coupled nonmagnetic (NM) and ferromagnetic (FM) conducting multilayers are crucial for microwave spintronic devices of the future. We demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, that in broadband measurements of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) 10-70 nm-thick permalloy (Py) layers are shielded from the dynamic magnetic field of the microstrip line by eddy currents circulating in the NM capping layers, which strongly diminishes the amplitude of magnetisation precession in the FM material. Our findings have direct implications for designing broadband FMR and measurements of spin current…

Changing the interlayer exchange coupling between magnetic layers in-situ is a key issue of spintronics, as it allows for the optimization of properties that are desirable for applications, including magnetic sensing and memory. In this paper, we utilize the phase change material VO2 as a spacer layer to regulate the interlayer exchange coupling between ferromagnetic layers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The successful growth of ultra-thin (several nanometres) VO2 films is realized by sputtering at room temperature, which further enables the fabrication of [Pt/Co]2/VO2/[Co/Pt]2 multil…
Voltage-driven 180$^\circ$ magnetization switching without electric current provides the possibility for revolutionizing the spintronics. We demonstrated the voltage-driven charge-mediated 180$^\circ$ magnetization switching at room temperature by combining first-principles calculations and temperature-dependent magnetization dynamics simulation. The electric field ($E$) induced interface charge is found to allow a giant modulation of the magnetic anisotropy ($K$) of the nanomagnet. Particularly $K$ is revealed to vary linearly with respect to $E$ and the epitaxial strain. Magnetization dynami…
Thermal spin pumping constitutes a novel mechanism for generation of spin currents; however their weak intensity constitutes a major roadblock for its usefulness. We report a phenomenon that produces a huge spin current in the central region of a multilayer system, resulting in a giant spin Seebeck effect in a structure formed by repetition of ferromagnet/metal bilayers. The result is a consequence of the interconversion of magnon and electron spin currents at the multiple interfaces. This work opens the possibility to design thin film heterostructures that may boost the application of thermal…
We report here sign reversal and tunability of exchange bias in AuFe cosputtered films of thickness about 63 nm. As deposited film exhibits exchange bias effect at room temperature without external triggering field and its magnitude increases gradually with decrease in temperature down to 5 K. Upon irradiation with 100 MeV Au9+ ions at a fluence of 5*1013 ions/cm2, hysteresis loop shifts completely from origin towards positive field side at room temperature and reverses sign when temperature is reduced to 5 K as studied by SQUID magnetometry. A well defined uniaxial magnetic anisotropy has bee…
The main obstacles in realizing diluted magnetic oxide (DMO) in spintronics are the unknown electronic structures associated with its high TC ferromagnetism and spin polarized current and how to manipulate desired electronic structures by fabrication techniques. We demonstrate that fine-tuned electronic structures and band structures can be modified to initiate DMO properties. Interestingly, in the semiconducting state, the doped Co ions and oxygen vacancies contribute non-negligible magnetic moments; and the magnetic coupling between these moments is mediated by the localized carriers via hig…

Here, we report the room-temperature ferromagnetic domains with long-range order in semiconducting V-doped WSe2 monolayer synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Ferromagnetic order is manifested using magnetic force microscopy up to 360K, while retaining high on/off current ratio of ~105 at 0.1% V-doping concentration. The V-substitution to W sites keep a V-V separation distance of 5 nm…
Two-dimensional intrinsic ferromagnetic half-metal (HM) are important for the spintronics. Manipulating the interlayer magnetic coupling of van der Waals magnetic materials is an important method to control magnetoelectric properties, which is especially useful for the spintronics. Here, based on systematical research of CrGeTe3 (CGT) bilayer and multilayers with s of self-intercalated (SI) Cr atom, we find that self-intercalation can enhance the interlayer magnetic coupling. The super-exchange interaction still dominates interlayer magnetic exchange interaction, which results in ferromagnetic…
The design of large-scale electronic circuits that are entirely spintronics-driven requires a current source that is highly spin-polarised at and beyond room temperature, cheap to build, efficient at the nanoscale and straightforward to integrate with semiconductors. Yet despite research within several subfields spanning nearly two decades, this key building block is still lacking. We experimentally and theoretically show how the interface between Co and phthalocyanine molecules constitutes a promising candidate. Spin-polarised direct and inverse photoemission experiments reveal a high degree …
Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of antiferromagnets as the active component in spintronic devices. This is in contrast to their current passive role as pinning layers in hard disk read heads and magnetic memories. Here we report the epitaxial growth of a new high-temperature antiferromagnetic material, tetragonal CuMnAs, which exhibits excellent crystal quality, chemical order and compatibility with existing semiconductor technologies. We demonstrate its growth on the III-V semiconductors GaAs and GaP, and show that the structure is also lattice matched to Si. Neutron diffractio…
Roughness-insensitive and electrically controllable magnetization at the (0001) surface of antiferromagnetic chromia is observed using magnetometry and spin-resolved photoemission measurements and explained by the interplay of surface termination and magnetic ordering. Further, this surface in placed in proximity with a ferromagnetic Co/Pd multilayer film. Exchange coupling across the interface between chromia and Co/Pd induces an electrically controllable exchange bias in the Co/Pd film, which enables a reversible isothermal (at room temperature) shift of the global magnetic hysteresis loop o…
THz polarization control upon generation is a crucially missing functionality. THz spintronic emitters based on the inverse spin Hall effect allow for this by the strict implicit orthogonality between their magnetization state and the emitted polarization. This control was up till now only demonstrated using cumbersome external magnetic field biasing to impose a polarization direction. We present here for the first time an efficient voltage control of the polarization state of terahertz spintronic emitters. Using a ferromagnetic spin pumping multilayer exhibiting simultaneously strong uniaxial…
Compensated ferrimagnets, like antiferromagnets, show no net magnetization but their transport and magneto-optic properties resemble those of ferromagnets, thereby creating opportunities for applications in high-frequency spintronics and low-energy loss communications. Here we study the modification the noncollinear ferrimagnetic spin structure of Mn4N by a variety of metallic substitutions Z (Z = Cu - Ge and Ag - Sn) to achieve compensation at room temperature. The noncollinear frustrated 2.35 Bohr magneton moments of Mn on 3c sites of the (111) kagome planes tilt about 20 degree out-of-plane…
Antiferromagnetic spin motion at terahertz (THz) frequencies attracts growing interests for fast spintronics, however their smaller responses to external field inhibit device application. Recently the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn, a Weyl semimetal candidate, was reported to show large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at room temperature comparable to ferromagnets. Dynamical aspect of such large responses is an important issue to be clarified for future THz data processing. Here the THz anomalous Hall conductivity in Mn$_3$Sn thin films is investigated by polarization-resolved spectroscopy.…
The time-window for processing electron spin information (spintronics) in solid-state quantum electronic devices is determined by the spin-lattice (T1) and spin-spin (T2) relaxation times of electrons. Minimising the effects of spin-orbit coupling and the local magnetic contributions of neighbouring atoms on T1 and T2 at room temperature remain substantial challenges to practical spintronics. Here, we report a record-high conduction electron T1=T2 of 175 ns at 300 K in 37 nm +/- 7 nm carbon spheres, which exceeds by far the highest values observed for any conducting solid state material of com…
