Understanding spin-wave dynamics in chiral magnets is a key step for the development of high-speed, spin-wave based spintronic devices that take advantage of chiral and topological spin textures for their operation. Here we present an experimental and theoretical study of spin-wave dynamics in a cubic B20 FeGe single crystal. Using the combination of waveguide microwave absorption spectroscopy (MAS), micromagnetic simulations, and analytical theory, we identify the resonance dynamics in all magnetic phases (field polarized, conical, helical, and skyrmion phases). Because the resonance frequencies of specific chiral spin textures are unique, quantitative agreement between our theoretical predictions and experimental findings for all resonance frequencies and spin wave modes enables us to unambiguously identify chiral magnetic phases and to demonstrate that MAS is a powerful tool to efficiently extract a magnetic phase diagram. These results provide a new tool to accelerate the integration of chiral magnetic materials into spintronic devices.
We report strong unidirectional anisotropy in bulk polycrystalline B20 FeGe measured by ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Bulk and micron-sized samples were produced and analytically characterized. FeGe is a B20 compound with inherent Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Lorenz microscopy confirms a skyrmion lattice at $190 \; \text{K}$ in a magnetic field of 150 mT. Ferromagnetic resonance was measured at $276 \; \text{K} \pm 1 \; \text{K}$, near the Curie temperature. Two resonance modes were observed, both exhibit a unidirectional anisotropy of $K=1153 \; \text{J/m}^3 \pm 10 \; \text{J/m}…
B20 phase magnetic materials, such as FeGe, have been of significant interests in recent years because they enable magnetic skyrmions, which can potentially lead to low energy cost spintronic applications. One major effort in this emerging field is the stabilization of skyrmions at room temperature and zero external magnetic field. We report the growth of phase-pure FeGe epitaxial thin films on Si(111) substrates by ultrahigh vacuum off-axis sputtering. The high crystalline quality of the FeGe films was confirmed by x-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Hall effect m…
Although chiral magnetic materials have emerged as a potential ingredient in future spintronic memory devices, there are few comprehensive studies of magnetic properties in scalably-grown thin films. We present growth, systematic physical and magnetic characterization, and microwave absorption spectroscopy of B20 FeGe thin films. We also perform micromagnetic simulations and analytical theory to understand the dynamical magnetic behavior of this material. We find magnetic resonance features in both the helical and field-polarized magnetic states that are well explained by micromagnetic simulat…
We report on detailed polarized small-angle neutron scattering on cubic FeGe in magnetic fields applied either along (transverse) the scattering vector or parallel (longitudinal)to the neutron beam. The ($H,T$) phase diagrams for all principal axes contain a segmented $A$-phase region just below the onset of magnetic order. Hexagonal Bragg-spot patterns were observed across the entire $A$-phase region for the longitudinal geometry. Scattering intensity was observed in parts of the A phase for both scattering configurations. Only in a distinct pocket ($A_1$) vanishing scattering intensity was f…
Epitaxial films including bulk-like cubic and wurtzite polymorphs of MnSb have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs via careful control of the Sb4/Mn flux ratio. Nonzero-temperature density functional theory was used to predict ab initio the spin polarization as a function of reduced magnetization for the half-metals NiMnSb and cubic MnSb. In both cases, half-metallicity is lost at a threshold magnetization reduction, corresponding to a temperature T*< Tc. This threshold is far higher for cubic MnSb compared to NiMnSb and corresponds to T* > 350K, making epitaxial cubic MnSb a promisin…
Cubic InGaN/GaN multi quantum wells (MQWs) with high structural and optical quality are achieved by utilizing free-standing 3C-SiC (001) substrates and optimizing InGaN quantum well growth. Superlattice peaks up to 5th order are clearly resolved in X-ray diffraction. We observe bright green room temperature photoluminescence (PL) from c-InxGa1-xN/GaN MQWs (x=0.16). The full-width at half maximum of the PL emission is about 240 meV at 300 K. The PL intensity increases with well thickness, giving proof that polarization fields which can limit the performance of the wurtzite III-nitride based dev…
Propagation character of spin wave was investigated for chiral magnets FeGe and Co-Zn-Mn alloys, which can host magnetic skyrmions near room temperature. On the basis of the frequency shift between counter-propagating spin waves, the magnitude and sign of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction were directly evaluated. The obtained magnetic parameters quantitatively account for the size and helicity of skyrmions as well as their materials variation, proving that the DM interaction plays a decisive role in the skyrmion formation in this class of room-temperature chiral magnets. The propagating s…
The optical orientation of the exciton spin in an ensemble of self-organized cubic GaN/AlN quantum dots is studied by time-resolved photoluminescence. Under a polarized quasi-resonant excitation, the luminescence linear polarization exhibits no temporal decay, even at room temperature. This demonstrates the robustness of the exciton spin polarization in these cubic nitride nanostructures, with characteristic decay times longer than 10 ns.
We report the formation of cubic phase, under ambient conditions, in thin films of Zirconia synthesized by electron beam evaporation technique. The stabilization of the cubic phase was achieved without the use of chemical stabilizers and/or concurrent ion beam bombardment. Films of two different thickness (660 nm, 140 nm) were deposited. The 660 nm and 140 nm films were found to be stoichiometric (ZrO2) and off-stoichiometric (ZrO1.7) respectively by Resonant Rutherford back-scattering spectroscopy. While the 660 nm as-deposited films were in the cubic phase, as indicated by X-ray diffraction …
The electrical and magnetic properties of p-type cubic (Ga,Mn)N thin films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy are reported. Hole concentrations in excess of 1018 cm-3 at room temperature are observed. Activated behaviour is observed down to around 150K, characterised by an acceptor ionisation energy of around 45-60meV. The dependence of hole concentration and ionisation energy on Mn concentration indicates that the shallow acceptor level is not simply due to unintentional co-doping. Thermopower measurements on freestanding films, CV profilometry, and the dependence of conductivity…
Single photon emitters (SPEs) play an important role in a number of quantum information tasks such as quantum key distributions. In these protocols, telecom wavelength photons are desired due to their low transmission loss in optical fibers. In this paper, we present a study of bright single-photon emitters in cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) emitting in the telecom range. We find that these emitters are photostable and bright at room temperature with a count rate of ~ MHz. Together with the fact that SiC is a growth and fabrication-friendly material, our result may pave the way for its future a…
We present direct evidence of above room temperature magneto-electricity in single-phase Li0.05Ti0.02Ni0.93O with above-ambient antiferromagnetic ordering. Temperature-hysteresis in warming/cooling heat-flow thermograms establishes a discontinuous/first-order nature of the cubic-to-rhombohedral structural change concurring the AFM transition. At TN = 488K, magnetization features a sharp slope-&-curvature discontinuity and dielectric constant shows a peak-anomaly. Room temperature P-E loop measures a large polarization traceable to the Nèel domain walls. We find positive room-temperature magnet…
Most mechanical resonators are treated as simple linear oscillators. Nonlinearity in the resonance behavior of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) has only lately attracted significant interest. Most recently, cubic-order nonlinearity has been used to explain anomalies in the resonance frequency behaviors in the frequency domain. Particularly, such nonlinearities were explained using cubic nonlinearity in the restoring force (Duffing nonlinearity) or damping (van der Pol nonlinearity). Understanding the limits of linear resonant behavior is particularly important in NEMS, as they are frequent…
We have utilised a high spatial resolution imaging method, Differential Phase Contrast (DPC) performed in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), for precise measurement of the magnetic induction distribution in skyrmion states in noncentrosymmetric magnetically ordered materials. Applied to investigate the internal structure of hexagonal skyrmion lattice cells, stabilised by an out-plane applied magnetic field in an FeGe nanowedge specimen, mapping of the in-plane component of magnetic induction has yielded "average" skyrmion profiles and observation of internal six-fold symmetry.…
Nanocrystalline (Th1-xFex)O2-d particles with different Fe concentrations (x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 and 0.25) have been prepared by a gel combustion method. Rietveld refinement analyses of X-ray diffraction data revealed the formation of an impurity free cubic type Th1-xFexO2-d structure up to x = 0.20. This observation is further confirmed from the detailed studies conducted on 10 at. percent Fe doped ThO2 using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) imaging and indexing of the selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns. DC Magnetization studies as a function …
The defect tolerance nature of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite is reflected from its stupendous growth in photovoltaic performances. The presence of lattice defect can manipulate or even gives rise to some exceptional properties which otherwise would have remained unseen. One of such properties reported in this article is the experimental observation of defect mediated room temperature ferromagnetism in methylammonium lead halide perovskite for the very first time, ably supported by ab-initio calculations. Theoretical analysis predicts the ferromagnetism principally arises from the iodide …
High-pressure powder x-ray diffraction experiments have revealed that sodium and gold react at room temperature and form new Na-Au intermetallic compounds under high pressure. We have identified four intermetallic phases up to 60 GPa. The first phase (phase I) is the known Na2Au with the tetragonal CuAl2-type structure. It changed to the second phase (phase II) at about 0.8 GPa, which has the composition Na3Au with the trigonal Cu3As-type or hexagonal Cu3P-type structure. Phase II further transformed to phase III at 3.6 GPa. Phase III has the same composition Na3Au with the cubic BiF3-type str…
The current controversies about the existence of an intermediate 'beta' phase of BiFeO_3 and the high temperature paraelectric 'gamma' phase are resolved by studying the sequence of ferroic transitions in 0.8BiFeO_3-0.2Pb(Fe_1/2Nb_1/2)O_3 (BF-0.2PFN) with lowered transition temperature. It is shown that the room temperature ferroelectric phase of 0.8BF-0.2PFN in the R3c space group transforms to the paraelectric/paraelastic cubic (Pm-3m) phase directly without any intermediate 'beta' phase reported in the literature. This transition is of first order type as confirmed by the coexistence of R3c…
The structure of dielectric perovskite BaZrO$_3$, long known to be cubic at room temperature without any structural phase transition with variation of temperature, has been recently disputed to have different ground state structures with lower symmetries involving octahedra rotation. The pressure-dependent Raman scattering measurements can identify the hierarchy of energetically-adjacent polymorphs, helping in turn understand its ground state structure at atmospheric pressure. Here, Raman scattering spectra of high-quality BaZrO$_3$ single crystals grown by the optical floating zone method are…
The normal spinel oxide MgCr2O4 is cubic at room temperature while the normal spinel CuCr2O4 is tetragonal as a consequence of the Jahn-Teller nature of Cu2+ on the tetrahedral sites. Despite different end-member structures, complete solid solutions of Mg_{1-x}Cu_xCr2O4 can be prepared that display a first-order structural transition with composition x = 0.43 at room temperature. Reverse Monte Carlo analysis of total neutron scattering on data acquired between 300 K and 15 K on samples with x = 0.10, 0.20, and 0.43 provides unbiased local and average structure descriptions of the samples, incl…
We report on the single phase synthesis and room temperature structural characterization of PbFe0.67W0.33O3 (PFW) multiferroic. The PFW was synthesized by low temperature sintering, Columbite method. Analysis of powder XRD pattern exhibits single phase formation of PFW with no traces of pyrochlore phase. Detailed analysis of room temperature neutron diffraction (ND) reveals cubic phase at room temperature, space group Pm-3m. The ND pattern clearly reveals magnetic Bragg peak at 2theeta = 18.51 (Q = 1.36Å-1). The refinement of magnetic structure reveals G-type antiferromagnetic structure in PFW…
Plasticity in body-centred cubic (BCC) metals, including dislocation interactions at grain boundaries, is much less understood than in face-centred cubic (FCC) metals. At low temperatures additional resistance to dislocation motion due to the Peierls barrier becomes important, which increases the complexity of plasticity. Iron-silicon steel is an interesting, model BCC material since the evolution of the dislocation structure in specifically-oriented grains and at particular grain boundaries have far-reaching effects not only on the deformation behaviour but also on the magnetic properties, wh…
Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ (GST) has been widely used as a popular phase change material. In this study, we show that it exhibits high Seebeck coefficients 200 - 300 $μ$V/K in its cubic crystalline phase ($\it{c}$-GST) at remarkably high $\it{p}$-type doping levels of $\sim$ 1$\times$10$^{19}$ - 6$\times$10$^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$ at room temperature. More importantly, at low temperature (T = 200 K), the Seebeck coefficient was found to exceed 200 $μ$V/K for a doping range 1$\times$10$^{19}$ - 3.5$\times$10$^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$. Given that the lattice thermal conductivity in this phase has already been mea…
We report structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of Co1.5Fe1.5O4 nanoparticles and their composites with non-magnetic NaNO3. The samples were derived from metal nitrates solution at different pH values. The chemical routed sample was air heated at 200 0C and 500 0C. Heating of the material showed unusual decrease of crystallite size, but cubic spinel structure is seen in all samples. The samples of Co1.5Fe1.5O4 showed substantially large room temperature ferromagnetic moment, electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, and low dielectric loss. The samples are soft ferromagnet and ele…
Skyrmions, topologically protected vortex-like nanometric spin textures in magnets, have been attracting increasing attention for emergent electromagnetic responses and possible technological applications for spintronics. In particular, metallic magnets with chiral and cubic/tetragonal crystal structure may have high potential to host skyrmions that can be driven by low electrical current excitation. However, experimental observations of skyrmions have so far been limited to below room temperature for the metallic chiral magnets, specifically for the MnSi-type B20 compounds. Toward technologic…
The mixed spinel, MgFe2O4 has been synthesized by ball-milling assisted sintering method. X-ray diffraction study confirms formation of cubic MgFe2O4 and the lattice parameter values calculated are a = b = c = 8.369(3) Å. Vibrating sample magnetometer measurements at room temperature shows a soft ferrimagnetic nature. Magneto-Dielectric and Magneto-Restive plots confirm coupling at room temperature in the prepared MgFe2O4. The peak at 500 Oe in the MD plot is due to the canting of Fe3+ ions distributed in octahedral and tetrahedral sites.
The hybrid halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 exhibits a complex structural behaviour, with successive transitions between orthorhombic, tetragonal and cubic polymorphs at ca. 165 K and 327 K. Herein we report first-principles lattice dynamics (phonon spectrum) for each phase of CH3NH3PbI3. The equilibrium structures compare well to solutions of temperature-dependent powder neutron diffraction. By following the normal modes we calculate infrared and Raman intensities of the vibrations, and compare them to the measurement of a single crystal where the Raman laser is controlled to avoid degradation of…
Y$_{0.9}$Gd$_{0.1}$Fe$_{2}$, which crystallizes in a C15 cubic structure, can absorb up to 5 H/f.u. and its pressure-composition isotherm displays a multiplateau behavior related to the existence of several hydrides with different crystal structures. At room temperature Y$_{0.9}$Gd$_{0.1}$Fe$_{2}$H$_{x}$ hydrides (2.9 $\le$ x $\le$ 5) crystallize in three phases with cubic structure (C1, C2 and C3), two phases with monoclinic structures (M1 and M2), and one phase with orthorhombic structure (O), with the following sequence for increasing H concentration: C1, M1, C2, M2, C3, O. Each phase exist…
We report measurements of 57Fe Mossbauer spectra for RFe2Zn20 ( R = Lu, Yb, Gd) from ~ 4.5 K to room temperature. The obtained isomer shift values are very similar for all three compounds, their temperature dependence was analyzed within the Debye model and resulted in an estimate of the Debye temperatures of 450-500 K. The values of quadrupole splitting at room temperature change with the cubic lattice constant a in a linear fashion. For GdFe2Zn20, ferromagnetic order is seen as an appearance of a sextet in the spectra. The 57Fe site hyperfine field for T = 0 was evaluated to be ~ 2.4 T.
Tuning electronic properties through strain engineering of metal oxides is an important step toward understanding electrochemical and catalytic reactions in energy storage and conversion devices. Traditionally, strain engineering studies focused on movement of oxygen ions at high temperatures (500 °C and above), complicating electrical properties by introducing mixed electronic and ionic conductivity. In this study, we demonstrate room temperature charge redistribution in a CeO2 thin film as a result of phase transformation in a localized region by mechanical deformation. Mechanical indentatio…
We here show by first principles theory that it is possible to achieve a structural and magnetic phase transition in common steel alloys like Fe$_{85}$Cr$_{15}$, by alloying with Ni or Mn. The predicted phase transition is from the ferromagnetic body centered cubic (bcc) phase to the paramagnetic face centered cubic (fcc) phase. The relatively high average magnetic moment of $\sim1.4μ_{B}$/atom predicted at the transition suggests that stainless steel potentially can present a magnetocaloric effect strong enough to make these alloys good candidates for refrigeration applications operating at a…
We synthesized strontium titanate SrTiO$_3$ (STO), Zr doped $\text{Sr}_\text{1-x}\text{Zr}_\text{x}\text{Ti}\text{O}_3$ and (Zr, Ni) co-doped $\text{Sr}_\text{1-x}\text{Zr}_\text{x}\text{Ti}_\text{1-y}\text{Ni}_\text{y}\text{O}_3$ samples using solid state reaction technique to report their structural, electrical and magnetic properties. The cubic $Pm$-$3m$ phase of the synthesized samples has been confirmed using Rietveld analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern. The grain size of the synthesized materials was reduced significantly due to Zr doping as well as (Zr, Ni) co-doping in STO…
Pressure-induced transitions from ordered intermetallic phases to substitutional alloys to semi-ordered phases were studied in a series of bismuth tellurides. Using angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction, the compounds Bi4Te5, BiTe, and Bi2Te were observed to form alloys with the disordered body-centered cubic (bcc) crystal structure upon compression to above 14--19 GPa at room temperature. The BiTe and Bi2Te alloys and the previously discovered high-pressure alloys of Bi2Te3 and Bi4Te3 were all found to show atomic ordering after gentle annealing at very moderate temperatures of ~100°C. Upon anne…
Molecular dynamics calculations are carried out on pure, Al-substituted, and In-substituted LLZO. The calculations show that the tendency of Al to occupy the 24d sites in LLZO lithium ion conductors is hypothesized here to negatively impact ionic conductivity. The room-temperature ionic conductivity of In-LLZO, in which the In resides at the 48g sites, is predicted to be an order of magnitude higher than Al-LLZO. Consideration of the simple tetrahedral topology of the lithium ion conduction network suggests that the increased conductivity arises because the 48g site sits at a bridge in the lit…
We present here temperature-dependent Raman, x-ray diffraction and specific heat studies between room temperature and 12 K on single crystals of spin-ice pyrochlore compound $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ and its non-magnetic analogue $Lu_2Ti_2O_7$. Raman data show a "new" band not predicted by factor group analysis of Raman-active modes for the pyrochlore structure in $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$, appearing below a temperature of $T_c=$110 K with a concomitant contraction of the cubic unit cell volume as determined from the powder x-ray diffraction analysis. Low temperature Raman experiments on O$^{18}$-isotope substituted …
Inorganic lead halide perovskite materials have attracted great attention recently due to their potential for greater thermal stability compared to hybrid organic perovskites. However, the high processing temperature to convert from the non-perovskite phase to cubic perovskite phase in many of these systems has limited their application in flexible optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a room temperature processed inorganic PSC based on CsPbI2Br as the light harvesting layer. By combing this composition with key precursor solvents, we show that the inorganic perovskite film can be prepared b…
We report a temperature-dependent Raman scattering investigation of DyScO3 and GdScO3 single crystals from room temperature up to 1200 °C. With increasing temperature, all modes decrease monotonously in wavenumber without anomaly, which attests the absence of a structural phase transition. The high temperature spectral signature and extrapolation of band positions to higher temperatures suggest a decreasing orthorhombic distortion towards the ideal cubic structure. Our study indicates that this orthorhombic-to-cubic phase transition is close to or higher than the melting point of both rare-ear…
The two dimensional kagome spin lattice structure of Mn atoms in the family of Mn$_3$X non-collinear antiferromagnets are providing substantial excitement in the exploration of Berry curvature physics and the associated non-trivial magnetotransport responses. Much of these studies are performed in the hexagonal systems, mainly Mn$_3$Sn and Mn$_3$Ge, with the kagome planes having their normal along the [001] direction. In this manuscript, we report our study in the cubic Mn$_3$Pt thin films with their kagome planes normal to the [111] crystal axis. Our studies reveal a hole conduction dominant …
We combine the results of magnetic and transport measurements with Mossbauer spectroscopy and room-temperature diffraction data to construct the magnetic phase diagram of the new family of cubic perovskite manganites SrMn_1-xFe_xO_3. We have found antiferromagnetic ordering for lightly and heavily Fe-substituted material, while intermediate substitution leads to spin-glass behavior. Near the SrMn_0.5Fe_0.5O_3 composition these two types of ordering are found to coexist and affect one another. The spin glass behavior may be caused by competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions among Mn^…
The structural and magnetic properties of Y$_{0.9}$Pr$_{0.1}$Fe$_2$D$_{3.5}$ deuteride have been investigated by synchrotron and neutron diffraction, magnetic measurements, and differential scanning calorimetry. Deuterium insertion induces a 23.5 % cell volume increase and a lowering of crystal symmetry compared to the cubic C15 parent compound (Fd-3m SG). The deuteride is monoclinic (P21/c SG) below 330 K and undergoes a first order transition between 330 and 350 K towards a pseudo-cubic structure (R-3m SG) with TO-D = 342(2) K. The compound is ferromagnetic, accompanied by a magnetostrictive…
Since recently, some interests appeared in TiO as a thin film coating material due to its promising physical properties. Moreover, because of the existence of intrinsic vacancies, TiO demonstrates memristive properties. To use these compounds in active region for memristive switching, the investigation of the dynamical stability of these compounds is of importance. Therefore, the structural, electronic, and dynamical properties of TiO in two different phases, namely cubic and monoclinic structures along with vacancies, are debated from the framework of density functional theory. The structural…
Despite the composition close to glassy forming alloys, face centered cubic (FCC) Co81.8Si9.1B9.1, designed based on Co9B atomic cluster (polyhedral), are synthesized as singlephase ribbons successfully. These ribbons, with grain sizes of ca. 92 nm, show supreme ductility and strong orientation along (111), which couples with shape anisotropy leading to high magnetocrystalline anisotropy comparable to Co rich Co-Pt nanoscale thin films, with a coercivity of 430 Oe and squareness of 0.82 at room temperature. The stability and magnetic behaviors of the phase are discussed based on experimental e…
We investigate the cubic to tetragonal phase transition in the pressure-temperature phase diagram of strontium titanate SrTiO3 (STO) by means of Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction on single crystal samples. X-ray diffraction experiments are performed at room temperature, 381 and 467 K up to 53 GPa, 30 GPa and 26 GPa respectively. The observation of the superstructure reflections in the X-ray patterns provides evidence that the crystal undergoes at all investigated temperatures a pressure-induced transition from cubic to the tetragonal I4/mcm phase, identical to the low-temperature phase.…
The insulating ferrimagnet Cu2OSeO3 shows a rich variety of phases such as skyrmion lattice and helical magnetism controlled by interplay of different exchange interactions which can be tuned by external pressure. In this work we have investigated pressure-induced phase transitions at room temperature using synchrotron based x- ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements. With first-principles theoretical analysis, we show that spin-spin exchange couplings in the ambient cubic phase are affected notably by hydrostatic pressure. The ambient cubic phase transforms to a monoclinic phase abo…
