Understanding the process of quenching is one of the major open questions in galaxy evolution, and crucial insights may be obtained by studying quenched galaxies at high redshifts, at epochs when the Universe and the galaxies were younger and simpler to model. However, establishing the degree of quiescence in high redshift galaxies is a challenging task. One notable example is Hyde, a recently discovered galaxy at z=3.709. As compact (r~0.5 kpc) and massive (M*~1e11 Msun) as its quenched neighbor Jekyll, it is also extremely obscured yet only moderately luminous in the sub-millimeter. Panchromatic modeling suggested it could be the first galaxy found in transition to quenching at z>3, however the data were also consistent with a broad range of star-formation activity, including moderate SFR in the lower scatter of the galaxy main-sequence (MS). Here, we describe ALMA observations of the [CII] 157um and [NII] 205um far-infrared emission lines. The [CII] emission within the half-light radius is dominated by ionized gas, while the outskirts are dominated by PDRs or neutral gas. This suggests that the ionization in the center is not primarily powered by on-going star formation, and could come instead from remnant stellar populations formed in an older burst, or from a moderate AGN. Accounting for this information in the multi-wavelength modeling provides a tighter constraint on the star formation rate of SFR=$50^{+24}_{-18}$ Msun/yr. This rules out fully quenched solutions, and favors SFRs more than factor of two lower than expected for a galaxy on the MS, confirming the nature of Hyde as a transition galaxy. Theses results suggest that quenching happens from inside-out, and starts before the galaxy expels or consumes all its gas reservoirs. Similar observations of a larger sample would determine whether this is an isolated case or the norm for quenching at high-redshift. [abriged]
Aims. We aim to investigate the I([CII]) versus I([NII]) integrated intensity behavior in the AF region in order to assess the [CII] emission contribution from the H II region, which is traced by [NII] line observations, and PDR components in the high-metallicity environment of the GC. Methods. We used [CII] 158 um and [NII] 205 um fine-structure line observations of the AF in the literature to compare their observational integrated intensity distribution to semi-theoretical predictions for the contribution of H II regions and adjacent PDRs to the observed [CII] emission. We explored variation…
We report new Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) observations of the [CII], [NII] and [OI] atomic fine structure lines and dust continuum emission of J1148+5251, a z=6.42 quasar, that probe the physical properties of its interstellar medium (ISM). The radially-averaged [CII] and dust continuum emission have similar extensions (up to $θ= 2.51^{+0.46}_{-0.25}\ \rm{arcsec}$, corresponding to $r= 9.8^{+3.3}_{-2.1}\ \rm{kpc}$ accounting for beam-convolution), confirming that J1148+5251 is the quasar with the largest [CII]-emitting has reservoir known at these epochs. Moreover, if the [CII] e…
We present Herschel spectroscopy of atomic lines arising in photodissociation regions as well as ionization regions of nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs), focusing on the volume-limited Atlas3D sample. Our data include the [CII], [OI], and [NII] 122 and 205 micron lines, along with ancillary data including CO and HI maps. We find ETGs have [CII]/FIR ratios slightly lower than spiral galaxies in the KINGFISH sample, and several ETGs have unusually large [NII] 122/[CII] ratios. The [NII] 122/[CII] ratio is correlated with UV colors and there is a strong anti-correlation of [CII]/FIR with NUV-K se…
Aims: We investigate how much of the [CII] emission in the nucleus of the nearby spiral galaxy IC 342 is contributed by PDRs and by the ionized gas. We examine the spatial variations of starburst/PDR activity and study the correlation of the [CII] line with the [NII] 205{\textmu}m emission line coming exclusively from the HII regions. Methods: We present small maps of [CII] and [NII] lines recently observed with the GREAT receiver on board SOFIA. In particular we present a super-resolution method to derive how unresolved, kinematically correlated structures in the beam contribute to the observ…
We study the properties of the interstellar medium in the interacting system BR1202-0725 at z=4.7 via its [NII] and [CII] fine-structure line emission. This system consists of a QSO, a sub-mm galaxy (SMG), and two Ly-alpha emitters (LAEs). Such a diversity in galaxy properties makes BR1202-0725 a unique laboratory of star formation and galaxy evolution at high redshift. We present ionized nitrogen ([NII] 205 micron) observations of this system, obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We find no [NII] emission at the quasar location, but tentative [NII] line detections associated…
The [CII] 158um fine-structure line is the brightest emission line observed in local star-forming galaxies. As a major coolant of the gas-phase interstellar medium, [CII] balances the heating, including that due to far-ultraviolet photons, which heat the gas via the photoelectric effect. However, the origin of [CII] emission remains unclear, because C+ can be found in multiple phases of the interstellar medium. Here we measure the fractions of [CII] emission originating in the ionized and neutral gas phases of a sample of nearby galaxies. We use the [NII] 205um fine-structure line to trace the…
We report interferometric measurements of [NII] 205 um fine-structure line emission from a representative sample of three galaxies at z=5-6 using the Atacama Large (sub)Millimeter Array (ALMA). These galaxies were previously detected in [CII] and far-infrared continuum emission and span almost two orders of magnitude in star formation rate (SFR). Our results show at least two different regimes of ionized inter-stellar medium properties for galaxies in the first billion years of cosmic time, separated by their L_[CII]/L_[NII] ratio. We find extremely low [NII] emission compared to [CII] (L_ [CI…
Exploiting the sensitivity and spatial resolution of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we have studied the morphology and the physical scale of the interstellar medium - both gas and dust - in SGP38326, an unlensed pair of interacting starbursts at $z= 4.425$. SGP38326 is the most luminous star bursting system known at $z > 4$ with an IR-derived ${\rm SFR \sim 4300 \,} M_\odot \, {\rm yr}^{-1}$. SGP38326 also contains a molecular gas reservoir among the most massive ever found in the early Universe, and it is the likely progenitor of a massive, red-and-dead elliptical ga…
We present the results from ALMA observations of [NII]205 micron, [CII]158 micron, and [OII]88 micron lines in an unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3, COSMOS-AzTEC-1, hosting a compact starburst core with an effective radius of 1 kpc. The [CII] and [NII] emission are spatially-resolved in 0.3 arcsec-resolution (1 kpc in radius). The kinematic properties of the [NII] emission are consistent with those of the CO(4-3) and [CII] emission, suggesting that the ionized gas feels the same gravitational potential as the associated molecular gas and photodissociation regions (PDRs). On the other hand…
We report the result from observations conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to detect [CII] 158 um fine structure line emission from galaxies embedded in one of the most spectacular Lyman-alpha blobs (LABs) at z=3.1, SSA22-LAB1. Of three dusty star-forming galaxies previously discovered by ALMA 860 um dust continuum survey toward SSA22-LAB1, we detected the [CII] line from one, LAB1-ALMA3 at z=3.0993+/-0.0004. No line emission was detected, associated with the other ALMA continuum sources or from three rest-frame UV/optical selected z_spec~3.1 galaxies within …
The brightest observed emission line in many star-forming galaxies is the [CII] 158 micron line, making it detectable up to z~7. In order to better understand and quantify the [CII] emission as a tracer of star-formation, the theoretical ratio between the [NII] 205 micron emission and the [CII] 158 micron emission has been employed to empirically determine the fraction of [CII] emission that originates from the ionized and neutral phases of the ISM. Sub-kiloparsec measurements of the [CII] 158 micron and [NII] 205 micron line in nearby galaxies have recently become available as part of the Key…
We present an analysis of [OI]63, [OIII]88, [NII]122 and [CII]158 far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure line observations obtained with Herschel/PACS, for ~240 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). We find pronounced declines -deficits- of line-to-FIR-continuum emission for [NII]122, [OI]63 and [CII]158 as a function of FIR color and infrared luminosity surface density, $Σ_{\rm IR}$. The median electron density of the ionized gas in LIRGs, based on the [NII]122/[NII]205 ratio, is $n_{\rm e}$ = 41 cm$^{-3}$. We find that the dispersion in t…
We present Atacama Compact Array and Atacama Pathfinder Experiment observations of the [N II] 205 $μ$m fine-structure line in 40 sub-millimetre galaxies lying at redshifts z = 3 to 6, drawn from the 2500 deg$^2$ South Pole Telescope survey. This represents the largest uniformly selected sample of high-redshift [N II] 205 $μ$m measurements to date. 29 sources also have [C II] 158 $μ$m line observations allowing a characterization of the distribution of the [C II] to [N II] luminosity ratio for the first time at high-redshift. The sample exhibits a median L$_{[C II]}$ /L$_{[N II]}$ $\approx$ 11 …
The [CII] fine-structure transition at 158 micron is frequently the brightest far-infrared line in galaxies. Due to its low ionization potential, C+ can trace the ionized, atomic, and molecular phases of the ISM. We present velocity resolved [CII] and [NII] pointed observations from SOFIA/GREAT on ~500 pc scales in the nearby galaxies M101 and NGC 6946 and investigate the multi-phase origin of [CII] emission over a range of environments. We show that ionized gas makes a negligible contribution to the [CII] emission in these positions using [NII] observations. We spectrally decompose the [CII] …
We present the first large scale high angular resolution survey of ionized nitrogen in the Galactic Plane through emission of its two fine structure transitions ([NII]) at 122 $μ$m and 205 $μ$m. The observations were largely obtained with the PACS instrument onboard the Herschel Space Observatory. The lines-of-sight were in the Galactic plane, following those of the Herschel OTKP project GOT C+. Both lines are reliably detected at the 10$^{-8}$ - 10$^{-7}$ $W$m$^{-2}$sr$^{-1}$ level over the range -60$^{o}$ $\leq$ $l$ $\leq$ 60$^{o}$. The $rms$ of the intensity among the 25 PACS spaxels of a g…
We present our new ALMA observations targeting [OIII]88um, [CII]158um, [NII]122um, and dust continuum emission for three Lyman break galaxies at z=6.0293-6.2037 identified in the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam survey. We clearly detect [OIII] and [CII] lines from all of the galaxies at 4.3-11.8sigma levels, and identify multi-band dust continuum emission in two of the three galaxies, allowing us to estimate infrared luminosities and dust temperatures simultaneously. In conjunction with previous ALMA observations for six galaxies at z>6, we confirm that all the nine z=6-9 galaxies have high [OIII]/[C…
We present far-infrared spectral line observations of five galaxies from the LITTLE THINGS sample: DDO 69, DDO 70, DDO 75, DDO 155, and WLM. While most studies of dwarfs focus on bright systems or starbursts due to observational constraints, our data extend the observed parameter space into the regime of low surface brightness dwarf galaxies with low metallicities and moderate star formation rates. Our targets were observed with Herschel at the [CII] 158um, [OI] 63um, [OIII] 88um, and NII 122um emission lines using the PACS Spectrometer. These high-resolution maps allow us for the first time t…
The [CII]158um line is one of the dominant cooling lines in star-forming active regions. The commonly assumed clumpy UV-penetrated cloud models predict a [CII] line profile similar to that of CO. However, recent spectral-resolved observations show that they are often very different, indicating a more complex origin of the line emission including the dynamics of the source region. The aim of our study is to investigate the physical properties of the star-forming ISM in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by separating the origin of the emission lines spatially and spectrally. In this paper, we foc…
Context: The emission line of [CII] at 158 micron is one of the strongest cooling lines of the interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies. Aims: Disentangling the relative contributions of the different ISM phases to [CII] emission, is a major topic of the HerM33es program, a Herschel key project to study the ISM in the nearby spiral galaxy M33. Methods: Using PACS, we have mapped the emission of [CII] 158 micron, [OI] 63 micron, and other FIR lines in a 2'x2' region of the northern spiral arm of M33, centered on the HII region BCLMP302. At the peak of H-alpha emission, we have observed in addition…
The far-infrared (FIR) lines are key tracers of the physical conditions of the interstellar medium (ISM) and are becoming workhorse diagnostics for galaxies throughout the universe. Our goal is to explain the differences and trends observed in the FIR line emission of dwarf galaxies compared to more metal-rich galaxies. We present Herschel PACS spectroscopic observations of the CII157um, OI63 and 145um, OIII88um, NII122 and 205um, and NIII57um fine-structure cooling lines in a sample of 48 low-metallicity star-forming galaxies of the guaranteed time key program Dwarf Galaxy Survey. We correlat…
We present the [CII] 157.7 micron map of galaxy NGC 7331 obtained with FIFI-LS on SOFIA. This map extends an existent Herschel/PACS observation of the central strip of the galaxy to encompass the entire molecular ring and much of the disk, including multiple spiral arms with intense far-IR emission. We also present Herschel archival data of the [NII] 205 micron line which covers a substantial part of the [CII] SOFIA observations and allows us to estimate the neutral fraction of the [CII] emission along the ring and disk of the galaxy. We find that the neutral fraction rises with the distance f…
We use ALMA observations of the host galaxy of the quasar ULAS-J1342+0928 at z=7.54 to study the dust continuum and far infrared lines emitted from its interstellar medium. The Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the dust continuum is well sampled with eight different spectral setups, and from a modified black body fit we obtain an emissivity coefficient of beta=1.85+-0.3. Assuming a standard dust temperature of 47 K we derive a dust mass of Mdust=0.35x10^8 Msol and a star formation rate of 150+-30 Msol/yr. We have >4sigma detections of the [CII]_158, [OIII]_88 and [NII]_122 atomic fine structure lines and…
We present spectroscopic observations of FIR fine-structure lines of 26 Seyfert galaxies obtained with the Herschel-PACS spectrometer. These observations are complemented by spectroscopy with Spitzer-IRS and Herschel-SPIRE. The ratios of the OIII, NII, SIII and NeV lines have been used to determine electron densities in the ionised gas regions. The CI lines, observed with SPIRE, have been used to measure the densities in the neutral gas, while the OI lines provide a measure of the gas temperature, at densities below 10000 cm-3. Using the OI145/63um and SIII33/18um line ratios we find an anti-c…
We present spatially resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) [CII] observations of the z=4.7555 submillimetre galaxy, ALESS 73.1. Our 0.5" FWHM map resolves the [CII] emitting gas which is centred close to the active galactic nucleus (AGN). The gas kinematics are dominated by rotation but with high turbulence, v_rot/sigma_int~3.1, and a Toomre Q parameter <1 throughout the disk. By fitting three independent thin rotating disk models to our data, we derive a total dynamical mass of 3+-2x10^10 M_sol. This is close to the molecular gas mass derived from previous CO(2-1) obser…
We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 7 observational results of a Lyman break galaxy at $ z=7.15 $, B14-65666 ("Big Three Dragons"), which is an object detected in [OIII] 88 $\rm{μm}$, [CII] 158 $\rm{μm}$, and dust-continuum emission during the epoch of reionization. Our targets are the [NII] 122 $\rm{μm}$ fine-structure emission line and underlying 120 $\rm{μm}$ dust continuum. The dust continuum is detected with a $ \sim $19$ σ$ significance. From far-infrared spectral energy distribution sampled at 90, 120, and 160 $\rm{μm}$, we obtaine a best-fit dust temperatur…
We analyze the CIII]-1908Åemission properties in a sample of 3899 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 2<z<3.8 from the VIMOS Ultra-Deep Survey (VUDS). We find a median EW(CIII])=2.0$\pm$0.2 to 2.2$\pm$0.2Å~for the SFG population at 2<z<3 and 3<z<4, resp. About 24% of SFGs are showing EW(CIII])>3Å, including 20% with 3<EW(CIII])<10Å~and 4% with strong emission EW(CIII])>10Å. A significant fraction of 1.2% of SFGs presents strong CIII] emission 20<EW(CIII])<40Å. This makes CIII] the second most-frequent emission line in the UV-rest spectra of SFGs after Lyman-$α$. We find a large dispersion in the w…
The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) provides the only laboratory to study the structure of molecular gas at high resolution and low metallicity. We present results from the Herschel Spectroscopic Survey of the SMC (HS$^{3}$), which mapped the key far-IR cooling lines [CII], [OI], [NII], and [OIII] in five star-forming regions, and new ALMA 7m-array maps of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $(2-1)$ with coverage overlapping four of the five HS$^{3}$ regions. We detect [CII] and [OI] throughout all of the regions mapped. The data allow us to compare the structure of the molecular clouds and surrounding photo…
We present Herschel observations of far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure (FS) lines [CII]158$μ$m, [OI]63$μ$m, [OIII]52$μ$m, and [SiII]35$μ$m in the z=2.56 Cloverleaf quasar, and combine them with published data in an analysis of the dense interstellar medium (ISM) in this system. Observed [CII]158$μ$m, [OI]63$μ$m, and FIR continuum flux ratios are reproduced with photodissociation region (PDR) models characterized by moderate far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation fields $G_0=$ 0.3-1$\times10^3$ and atomic gas densities $n_{\rm H}=$ 3-5$\times10^3$ cm$^{-3}$, depending on contributions to [CII]158$μ$m f…
Ionized interstellar gas is an important component of the interstellar medium and its lifecycle. The recent evidence for a widely distributed highly ionized warm interstellar gas with a density intermediate between the warm ionized medium (WIM) and compact HII regions suggests that there is a major gap in our understanding of the interstellar gas. Here we investigate the properties of the dense warm ionized medium (D-WIM) in the Milky Way using spectrally resolved SOFIA GREAT [NII] 205 micron line emission and Green Bank Telescope hydrogen radio recombination lines (RRL) data, supplemented by …
We report the serendipitous discovery of a dusty, starbursting galaxy at $z=5.667$ (hereafter called CRLE) in close physical association with the "normal" main-sequence galaxy HZ10 at $z=5.654$. CRLE was identified by detection of [CII], [NII] and CO(2-1) line emission, making it the highest redshift, most luminous starburst in the COSMOS field. This massive, dusty galaxy appears to be forming stars at a rate of at least 1500$\,M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ in a compact region only $\sim3$ kpc in diameter. The dynamical and dust emission properties of CRLE suggest an ongoing merger driving the starburst,…
We present SPIRE spectroscopy for 9 early-type galaxies (ETGs) representing the most CO-rich and far-infrared (FIR) bright galaxies of the volume-limited Atlas3D sample. Our data include detections of mid to high J CO transitions (J=4-3 to J=13-12) and the [CI] (1-0) and (2-1) emission lines. CO spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs) for our ETGs indicate low gas excitation, barring NGC 1266. We use the [CI] emission lines to determine the excitation temperature of the neutral gas, as well as estimate the mass of molecular hydrogen. The masses agree well with masses derived from CO, making…
We present cosmological, radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of galaxy formation during the epoch of reionization in an effort towards modelling the interstellar medium (ISM) and interpreting ALMA observations. Simulations with and without stellar radiation are compared at large (Mpc), intermediate (tens of kpc), and small (sub kpc) scales. At large scales, the dense regions around galaxies reionize first before UV photons penetrate the voids; however, considerable amounts of neutral gas remain present within the haloes. The spatial distribution of neutral gas is highly dynamic and is anti-cor…
The relationship between a galaxy's properties and its circumgalactic medium (CGM) provides a unique view of how galaxies evolve. We present an interesting edge-on (i=86 degrees) disk galaxy (G1547) where the CGM is probed by a background quasar at a distance of 84 kpc and within 10 degrees of the galaxy major axis. G1547 does not have any detectable CGM absorption down to stringent limits, covering HI (EW$_r$<0.02A, log(N(HI)/cm$^{-2}$)<12.6) and a range of low and high ionisation absorption lines (OI, CII, NII, SiII, CIII, NIII, SiIII, CIV, SiIV, NV and OVI). This system is rare, given the c…
We present high resolution [NII] 205 micrometer ^3P_1-^3P_0 spectra obtained with Herschel-HIFI towards a small sample of far-infrared bright star forming regions in the Galactic plane: W31C (G10.6-0.4), W49N (G43.2-0.1), W51 (G49.5-0.4), and G34.3+0.1. All sources display an emission line profile associated directly with the HII regions themselves. For the first time we also detect absorption of the [NII] 205 micrometer line by extended low-density foreground material towards W31C and W49N over a wide range of velocities. We attribute this absorption to the warm ionised medium (WIM) and find …
We present ALMA detections of the [NII] 205$μ$m and CO(12-11) emission lines, and the tentative detection of [CI] $^3$P$_1$ - $^3$P$_0$ for the strongly lensed ($μ$=5.7$\pm$0.5) dusty, star-forming galaxy SPT-S J213242-5802.9 (hereafter SPT2132-58) at z=4.77. The [NII] and CO(12-11) lines are detected at 11.5 and 8.5 $σ$ level, respectively, by our band-6 observations. The [CI] line is detected at 3.2 $σ$ after a re-analysis of existing band-3 data. The [CI] luminosity implies a gas mass of 3.8$\pm$1.2$\times$10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$, and consequently a very short depletion timescale of 34$\pm$13 M…
We study the formation and evolution of a sample of Lyman Break Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization by using high-resolution ($\sim 10 \,{\rm pc}$), cosmological zoom-in simulations part of the SERRA suite. In SERRA, we follow the interstellar medium (ISM) thermo-chemical non-equilibrium evolution, and perform on-the-fly radiative transfer of the interstellar radiation field (ISRF). The simulation outputs are post-processed to compute the emission of far infrared lines ([CII], [NII], and [OIII]). At $z=8$, the most massive galaxy, `Freesia', has an age $t_\star \simeq 409\,{\rm Myr}$, stella…
There is a long history of using optical emission and absorption lines to constrain the metallicity and ionization parameters of gas in galaxies. However, comparable diagnostics are less well-developed for the UV. Here, we assess the diagnostic potential of both absorption and emission features in the UV and evaluate the diagnostics against observations of local and high redshift galaxies. We use the CloudyFSPS nebular emission model of Byler et al. 2017, extended to include emission predictions in the UV, to evaluate the metallicity sensitivity of established UV stellar absorption indices, an…
We use the Herschel/PACS spectrometer to study the global and spatially resolved far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure line emission in a sample of 52 galaxies that constitute the SHINING survey. These galaxies include star-forming, active-galactic nuclei (AGN), and luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We find an increasing number of galaxies (and kiloparsec size regions within galaxies) with low line-to-FIR continuum ratios as a function of increasing FIR luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{FIR}}$), dust infrared color, $L_{\mathrm{FIR}}$ to molecular gas mass ratio ($L_{\mathrm{FIR}}/M_{\mathrm{mol}}$), and …
We compute synthetic optical and ultraviolet (UV) emission-line properties of galaxies in a full cosmological framework by coupling, in post-processing, new-generation nebular-emission models with high-resolution, cosmological zoom-in simulations of massive galaxies. Our self-consistent modelling accounts for nebular emission from young stars and accreting black holes (BHs). We investigate which optical- and UV-line diagnostic diagrams can best help to discern between the main ionizing sources, as traced by the ratio of BH accretion to star formation rates in model galaxies, over a wide range …
In the context of observations of the rest-frame ultraviolet and optical emission from distant galaxies, we explore the emission-line properties of photoionization models of active and inactive galaxies. Our aim is to identify new line-ratio diagnostics to discriminate between gas photoionization by active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star formation. We use a standard photoionization code to compute the emission from AGN narrow-line regions and compare this with calculations of the nebular emission from star-forming galaxies achieved using the same code. We confirm the appropriateness of widely u…
Submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at $z\gtrsim1$ are luminous in the far-infrared and have star-formation rates, SFR, of hundreds to thousands of solar masses per year. However, it is unclear whether they are true analogs of local ULIRGs or whether the mode of their star formation is more similar to that in local disk galaxies. We target these questions by using Herschel-PACS to examine the conditions in the interstellar medium (ISM) in far-infrared luminous SMGs at z~1-4. We present 70-160 micron photometry and spectroscopy of the [OIV]26 micron, [FeII]26 micron, [SIII]33 micron, [SiII]34 micron,…
We present a study of six far-infrared fine structure lines in the z=4.225 lensed dusty star-forming galaxy SPT0418-47 to probe the physical conditions of its InterStellar Medium (ISM). In particular, we report Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) detections of the [OI]145um and [OIII]88um lines and Atacama Compact Array (ACA) detections of the [NII]122 and 205um lines. The [OI]145um / [CII]158um line ratio is ~5x higher compared to the average of local galaxies. We interpret this as evidence that the ISM is dominated by photo-dissociation regions with high gas densities. The line ratios, and …
We present a multi-line survey of the interstellar medium (ISM) in two $z>6$ quasar (QSO) host galaxies, PJ231-20 ($z=6.59$) and PJ308-21 ($z=6.23$), and their two companion galaxies. Observations were carried out using the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA). We targeted eleven transitions including atomic fine structure lines (FSLs) and molecular lines: [NII]$_{\rm 205μm}$, [CI]$_{\rm 369μm}$, CO ($J_{\rm up} = 7, 10, 15, 16$), H$_2$O $3_{12}-2_{21}$, $3_{21}-3_{12}$, $3_{03}-2_{12}$, and the OH$_{\rm 163μm}$ doublet. The underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum samples the Rayleigh-J…
The Dwarf Galaxy Survey (DGS) program is studying low-metallicity galaxies using 230h of far-infrared (FIR) and submillimetre (submm) photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Herschel Space Observatory and draws to this a rich database of a wide range of wavelengths tracing the dust, gas and stars. This sample of 50 galaxies includes the largest metallicity range achievable in the local Universe including the lowest metallicity (Z) galaxies, 1/50 Zsun, and spans 4 orders of magnitude in star formation rates. The survey is designed to get a handle on the physics of the interstellar med…
(Abridged) Planetary nebulae (PNe) around Wolf-Rayet [WR] central stars ([WR]PNe) constitute a particular photoionized nebula class that represents about 10% of the PNe with classified central stars. We analyse deep high-resolution spectrophotometric data of 12 [WR]PNe. This sample represents the most extensive analysed so far, at such high spectral resolution. We aim to select the optimal physical conditions in the PNe to be used in ionic abundance calculations that will be presented in a forthcoming paper. We acquired spectra at LCO with the 6.5-m telescope and the MIKE spectrograph, coverin…
We present Karl G Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of CO(2-1) line emission and rest-frame 250GHz continuum emission of the Hyper-Luminous IR Galaxies (HyLIRGs) BRI1202-0725 (z=4.69) and BRI1335-0417 (z=4.41), with an angular resolution as high as 0.15". Our low order CO observations delineate the cool molecular gas, the fuel for star formation in the systems, in unprecedented detail. For BRI1202-0725, line emission is seen from both extreme starburst galaxies: the quasar host and the optically obscured submm galaxy (SMG), in addition to one of the Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies in th…
The 12CO J=4-3 to J=13-12 lines of the interstellar medium from nearby galaxies, newly observable with the Herschel SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS), offer an opportunity to study warmer, more luminous molecular gas than that traced by 12CO J=1-0. Here we present a survey of 17 nearby infrared-luminous galaxy systems (21 pointings). In addition to photometric modeling of dust, we modeled full 12CO spectral line energy distributions from J=1-0 to J=13-12 with two components of warm and cool CO gas, and included LTE analysis of [CI], [CII], [NII] and H2 lines. CO is emitted from a low-…
We compute synthetic, rest-frame optical and ultraviolet (UV) emission-line properties of galaxy populations at redshifts from z$\approx$0 to z=8 in a full cosmological framework. We achieve this by coupling, in post-processing, the cosmological IllustrisTNG simulations with new-generation nebular-emission models, accounting for line emission from young stars, post-asymptotic-giant-branch (PAGB) stars, accreting black holes (BHs) and, for the first time, fast radiative shocks. The optical emission-line properties of simulated galaxies dominated by different ionizing sources are largely consist…
We investigate the cold and warm gas content, kinematics, and spatial distribution of six local massive elliptical galaxies to probe the origin of the multiphase gas in their atmospheres. We report new observations, including SOFIA [CII], ALMA CO, MUSE H$α$+[NII] and VLA radio observations. These are complemented by a large suite of multiwavelength archival datasets, including thermodynamical properties of the hot gas and radio jets, which are leveraged to investigate the role of AGN feeding/feedback in regulating the multiphase gas content. Our galaxy sample shows a significant diversity in c…
We present the discovery of a low-redshift damped Ly$α$ (DLA) system in the spectrum of background starburst galaxy SDSS J111323.88+293039.3 ($z=0.17514$). The DLA is at an impact parameter of $\rm ρ=36~kpc$ from the star forming galaxy, SDSS J111324.08+293051.2 ($z=0.17077$). We measure an HI column density of $N($HI$)\rm =3.47\times10^{20}~cm^{-2}$ along with multiple low-ionization species such as NI, NII, SiII, CII, and SiIII. We also make an estimate of the covering fraction to be 0.883, giving us a limiting size of the DLA to be $A_{DLA}\rm \geq3.3~kpc^2$. Assuming a uniform column densi…
We perform joint modeling of the composite rest-frame far-UV (FUV) and optical spectra of redshift 1.85<z<3.49 star-forming galaxies to deduce key properties of the massive stars, ionized ISM, and neutral ISM, with the aim of investigating the principal factors affecting the production and escape of Ly-alpha (Lya) photons. Our sample consists of 136 galaxies with deep Keck/LRIS and MOSFIRE spectra covering, respectively, Ly-beta through CIII] 1907, 1909; and [OII], [NeIII], H-beta, [OIII], H-alpha, [NII], and [SII]. Spectral and photoionization modeling indicate that the galaxies are uniformly…
Interstellar chemistry is important for galaxy formation, as it determines the rate at which gas can cool, and enables us to make predictions for observable spectroscopic lines from ions and molecules. We explore two central aspects of modelling the chemistry of the interstellar medium (ISM): (1) the effects of local stellar radiation, which ionises and heats the gas, and (2) the depletion of metals onto dust grains, which reduces the abundance of metals in the gas phase. We run high-resolution (400 M$_\odot$ per baryonic particle) simulations of isolated disc galaxies, from dwarfs to Milky Wa…
