The relationship between a galaxy's properties and its circumgalactic medium (CGM) provides a unique view of how galaxies evolve. We present an interesting edge-on (i=86 degrees) disk galaxy (G1547) where the CGM is probed by a background quasar at a distance of 84 kpc and within 10 degrees of the galaxy major axis. G1547 does not have any detectable CGM absorption down to stringent limits, covering HI (EW$_r$<0.02A, log(N(HI)/cm$^{-2}$)<12.6) and a range of low and high ionisation absorption lines (OI, CII, NII, SiII, CIII, NIII, SiIII, CIV, SiIV, NV and OVI). This system is rare, given the covering fraction of $1.00_{-0.04}^{+0.00}$ for sub-L* galaxies within 50-100 kpc of quasar sightlines. G1547 has a low SFR (1.1 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$), SSFR ($1.5\times10^{-10}$yr$^{-1}$) and $Σ_{\rm SFR}$ (0.06 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$kpc$^{-2}$) and does not exhibit AGN or star-formation driven outflows. Compared to the general population of galaxies, G1547 is in the green valley and has an above average metallicity with a negative gradient. When compared to other HI absorption-selected galaxies, we find that quiescent galaxies with log(SSFR/yr$^{-1})<-11$ have a low probability (4/12) of possessing detectable HI in their CGM, while all galaxies (40/40) with log(SSFR/yr$^{-1})>-11$ have HI absorption. We conclude that SSFR is a good indicator of the presence of HI CGM. Interestingly however, G1547 is the only galaxy with log(SSFR/yr$^{-1})>-11$ that has no detectable CGM. Given the properties of G1547, and its absent CGM, it is plausible that G1547 is undergoing quenching due to a lack of accreting fuel for star-formation, with an estimated quenching timescale of $4\pm1$ Gyr. G1547 provides a unique perspective into the external mechanisms that could explain the migration of galaxies into the green valley.
We examine the connection between the properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and the quenching and morphological evolution of central galaxies in the EAGLE and IllustrisTNG simulations. The simulations yield very different median CGM mass fractions, $f_{\rm CGM}$, as a function of halo mass, $M_{200}$, with low-mass haloes being significantly more gas-rich in IllustrisTNG than in EAGLE. Nonetheless, in both cases scatter in $f_{\rm CGM}$ at fixed $M_{200}$ is strongly correlated with the specific star formation rate and the kinematic morphology of central galaxies. The correlations are …
We calculate the star formation quenching timescales in green valley galaxies at intermediate redshifts ($z\sim0.5-1$) using stacked zCOSMOS spectra of different galaxy morphological types: spheroidal, disk-like, irregular and merger, dividing disk-like galaxies further into unbarred, weakly-barred and strongly-barred, assuming a simple exponentially-decaying star formation history model and based on the H$_δ$ absorption feature and the $4000$ Å~break. We find that different morphological types present different star formation quenching timescales, reinforcing the idea that the galaxy morpholo…
We examine the influence of dark matter halo assembly on the evolution of a simulated $\sim L^\star$ galaxy. Starting from a zoom-in simulation of a star-forming galaxy evolved with the EAGLE galaxy formation model, we use the genetic modification technique to create a pair of complementary assembly histories: one in which the halo assembles later than in the unmodified case, and one in which it assembles earlier. Delayed assembly leads to the galaxy exhibiting a greater present-day star formation rate than its unmodified counterpart, whilst in the accelerated case the galaxy quenches at $z\si…

We study quenching in seven green valley galaxies on kpc scales by resolving their molecular gas content using \textsuperscript{12}CO(1-0) observations obtained with NOEMA and ALMA, and their star-formation rate using spatially resolved optical spectroscopy from the MaNGA survey. We perform radial stacking of both datasets to increase the sensitivity to molecular gas and star formation, thereby avoiding biases against strongly quenched regions. We find that both spatially resolved gas fraction ($\rm {f_{gas}}$) and star formation efficiency ($\rm {SFE}$) are responsible for quenching green val…

We study radial profiles in H$α$ equivalent width and specific star formation rate (sSFR) derived from spatially-resolved SDSS-IV MaNGA spectroscopy to gain insight on the physical mechanisms that suppress star formation and determine a galaxy's location in the SFR-$\rm M_\star$ diagram. Even within the star-forming `main sequence', the measured sSFR decreases with stellar mass, both in an integrated and spatially-resolved sense. Flat sSFR radial profiles are observed for $\rm log(M_\star/ M_\odot) < 10.5$, while star-forming galaxies of higher mass show a significant decrease in sSFR in the c…
Green valley galaxies represent the population that is likely to transition from the star-forming to the quiescent phases. To investigate the role of the environment in quenching star formation, we use the wide-field data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Strategic Subaru Proposal survey to quantify the frequency of green valley galaxies in different environments and their redshift evolution. We find that the green valley fraction, in general, is less than 20% in any redshift and environment. The green valley fraction, when normalized to the total population, is higher in the field than that in group…
In this Letter, we analyse the radial UV-optical color distributions in a sample of low redshift green valley (GV) galaxies, with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX)+Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images, to investigate how the residual recent star formation distribute in these galaxies. We find that the dust-corrected $u-r$ colors of early-type galaxies (ETGs) are flat out to $R_{90}$, while the colors turn blue monotonously when $r>0.5R_{50}$ for late-type galaxies (LTGs). More than a half of the ETGs are blue-cored and have remarkable positive NUV$-r$ color gradients, suggesting that the…
In spatially resolved galaxy observations, star formation rate radial profiles are found to correlate with total specific star formation rates. A central depletion in star formation is thought to correlate with the globally depressed star formation rates of, for example, galaxies within the Green Valley. We present, for the first time, radial specific star formation rate profiles for a statistical sample of simulated galaxies from the Illustris and EAGLE large cosmological simulations. For galaxies on the star-forming sequence, simulated specific star formation rate profiles are in loose agree…
In a framework where galaxies mostly migrate on the colour-magnitude diagram from star-forming to quiescent, the green valley is considered a transitional galaxy stage. The details of the processes that drive galaxies from star-forming to passive systems still remain unknown. We developed a method that estimates empirically the star formation quenching times-scales of green valley galaxies, assuming an exponential decay model of the SFH and through a combination of narrow and broad bands from J-PLUS and GALEX. We correlate these quenching time-scales with the presence of bars. We find that the…
We study specific star formation rate (sSFR) and gas profiles of star forming and green valley galaxies in the Simba cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. Star-forming galaxy half-light radii ($R_{\rm half}$) at $z=0$ and their evolution ($\propto(1+z)^{-0.78}$) agree with observations. Passive galaxy $R_{\rm half}$ agree with observations at high redshift, but by $z=0$ are too large, owing to numerical heating. We compare Simba $z=0$ sSFR radial profiles for star forming and green valley galaxies to observations. Simba shows strong central depressions in star formation rate (SFR), sSFR, and g…
We study the nature of the low-redshift CGM in the Simba cosmological simulations as traced by ultraviolet absorption lines around galaxies in bins of stellar mass ($M_\star>10^{10}M_\odot$) for star-forming, green valley and quenched galaxies at impact parameters $r_\perp\leq 1.25r_{200}$. We generate synthetic spectra for HI, MgII, CII, SiIII, CIV, and OVI, fit Voigt profiles to obtain line properties, and estimate the density, temperature, and metallicity of the absorbing gas. We find that CGM absorbers are most abundant around star forming galaxies with $M_\star < 10^{11}M_\odot$, while th…
Existing models of galaxy formation have not yet explained striking correlations between structure and star-formation activity in galaxies, notably the sloped and moving boundaries that divide star-forming from quenched galaxies in key structural diagrams. This paper uses these and other relations to ``reverse-engineer'' the quenching process for central galaxies. The basic idea is that star-forming galaxies with larger radii (at a given stellar mass) have lower black-hole masses due to lower central densities. Galaxies cross into the green valley when the cumulative effective energy radiated …
We measure the colour evolution and quenching time-scales of $z=1.0-1.8$ galaxies across the green valley. We derive rest-frame $NUVrK$ colours and select blue-cloud, green-valley and red-sequence galaxies from the spectral energy distribution modelling of CANDELS GOODS-South and UDS multi-band photometry. Separately, we constrain the star-formation history (SFH) parameters (ages, $τ$) of these galaxies by fitting their deep archival HST grism spectroscopy. We derive the galaxy colour-age relation and show that only rapidly evolving galaxies with characteristic delayed-$τ$ SFH time-scales of $…
We analyze the SDSS data to classify the galaxies based on their colour using a fuzzy set-theoretic method and quantify their environments using the local dimension. We find that the fraction of the green galaxies does not depend on the environment and $10\%-20\%$ of the galaxies at each environment are in the green valley depending on the stellar mass range chosen. Approximately $10\%$ of the green galaxies at each environment host an AGN. Combining data from the Galaxy Zoo, we find that $\sim 95\%$ of the green galaxies are spirals and $\sim 5\%$ are ellipticals at each environment. Only $\s…
The distribution of galaxies on a colour-magnitude diagram reveals a bimodality, featuring a passively evolving red sequence and a star-forming blue cloud. The region between these two, the Green Valley (GV), represents a fundamental transition where quenching processes operate. We exploit an alternative definition of the GV using the 4,000 Angstrom break strength, an indicator that is more resilient than colour to dust attenuation. We compare and contrast our GV definition with the traditional one, based on dust-corrected colour, making use of data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our GV se…
We present a comparative analysis of the properties of passive, star-forming and transition (green valley) galaxies, in four discrete environments: field, groups, the outskirts and the core of X-ray clusters. We construct samples of galaxies from the SDSS in these environments so that they are bound to have similar redshift distributions. The classification of galaxies into the three sequences is based on the UV-optical colour $NUV-r$. We study a number of galaxy properties: stellar mass, morphology, specific star formation rate and the history of star formation. The analysis of green valley g…
The transition of high-mass galaxies from being blue and star forming to being red and dead is a crucial step in galaxy evolution, yet not fully understood. In this work, we use the NIHAO suite of galaxy simulations to investigate the relation between the transition time through the green valley and other galaxy properties. The typical green valley crossing time of our galaxies is approximately 400 Myr, somewhat shorter than observational estimates. The crossing of the green valley is triggered by the onset of AGN feedback and the subsequent shut down of star formation. Interestingly the time …

In this paper we present the star formation properties of $\rm{I_{subaru}\leq}$ 23 X-ray detected AGN and non-AGN galaxies in the green valley with far-IR (FIR) emission, using data from the COSMOS field. We measured star formation rates (SFR) using FIR Herschel/PACS data and we observed the location of AGN and non-AGN galaxies on the main-sequence of star formation. We went a step further in analysing the importance of AGN in quenching star formation in the green valley, the region proposed to be the transitional phase in galaxy evolution where galaxies are moving from later- to earlier-types…
Star-forming galaxies can in principle be transformed into passive systems by a multitude of processes that quench star formation, such as the halting of gas accretion (starvation) or the rapid removal of gas in AGN-driven outflows. However, it remains unclear which processes are the most significant, primary drivers of the SF-passive bimodality. We address this key issue in galaxy evolution by studying the chemical properties of 80,000 local galaxies in SDSS DR7. In order to distinguish between different quenching mechanisms, we analyse the stellar metallicities of star-forming, green valley …
Recent simulations predict that the presence of stellar bulge suppress the efficiency of star formation in early-type galaxies, and this `morphological quenching' scenario is supported by many observations. In this study, we discuss the net effect of galaxy morphologies on the star formation efficiency (SFE) during the phase of galaxy transition, on the basis of our CO($J=1-0$) observations of 28 local `green-valley' galaxies with the Nobeyama 45m Radio Telescope. We observed 13 `disk-dominated' and 15 `bulge-dominated' green-valley galaxies at fixed stellar mass ($M_*$) and star formation rat…
We use SDSS+\textit{GALEX}+Galaxy Zoo data to study the quenching of star formation in low-redshift galaxies. We show that the green valley between the blue cloud of star-forming galaxies and the red sequence of quiescent galaxies in the colour-mass diagram is not a single transitional state through which most blue galaxies evolve into red galaxies. Rather, an analysis that takes morphology into account makes clear that only a small population of blue early-type galaxies move rapidly across the green valley after the morphologies are transformed from disk to spheroid and star formation is quen…
We present a study of a sample of 254 clusters from the SDSS-DR7 Yang Catalog and an auxiliary sample of field galaxies to perform a detailed investigation on how galaxy quenching depends on both environment and galaxy stellar mass. Our samples are restricted to 0.03$\leq$z$\leq$0.1 and we only consider clusters with $\rm log(M_{halo}/M_{\odot}) \geq 14$. Comparing properties of field and cluster galaxies in the Blue Cloud, Green Valley and Red Sequence, we find evidence that field galaxies in the red sequence hosted star formation events $\rm 2.1 \pm 0.7$ Gyr ago, on average, more recently th…
We use a semianalytic model of galaxy formation to compare the predictions of two quenching scenarios: halo quenching and black-hole (BH) quenching. After calibrating both models so that they fit the mass function of galaxies, BH quenching is in better agreement with the fraction of passive galaxies as a function of stellar mass $M_*$ and with the galaxy morphological distribution on a star-formation-rate vs. $M_*$ diagram. Besides this main finding, there are two other results from this research. First, a successful BH-quenching model requires that minor mergers contribute to the growth of su…
Does galaxy evolution proceed through the green valley via multiple pathways or as a single population? Motivated by recent results highlighting radically different evolutionary pathways between early- and late-type galaxies, we present results from a simple Bayesian approach to this problem wherein we model the star formation history (SFH) of a galaxy with two parameters, [t, τ] and compare the predicted and observed optical and near-ultraviolet colours. We use a novel method to investigate the morphological differences between the most probable SFHs for both disc-like and smooth-like populat…
$\require{mediawiki-texvc}$The green valley (GV) represents an important transitional state from actively star-forming galaxies to passively evolving systems. Its traditional definition, based on colour, rests on a number of assumptions that can be subject to non-trivial systematics. In Angthopo et al. (2019), we proposed a new definition of the GV based on the 4000$Å$ break strength. In this paper, we explore in detail the properties of the underlying stellar populations by use of ~230 thousand high-quality spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), contrasting our results with a tradi…
Over the past decade, rest-frame color-color diagrams have become popular tools for selecting quiescent galaxies at high redshift, breaking the color degeneracy between quiescent and dust-reddened star-forming galaxies. In this work, we study one such color-color selection tool -- the rest-frame $U-V$ vs. $V-J$ diagram -- by employing mock observations of cosmological galaxy formation simulations. In particular, we conduct numerical experiments assessing both trends in galaxy properties in UVJ space and the color-color evolution of massive galaxies as they quench at redshifts $z\sim 1$--$2$. W…
To explore the evolutionary connection among red, green, and blue galaxy populations, based on a sample of massive ($M_* > 10^{10} M_{\odot} $) galaxies at 0.5<z<2.5 in five 3D-HST/CANDELS fields, we investigate the dust content, morphologies, structures, AGN fractions, and environments of these three galaxy populations. Green valley galaxies are found to have intermediate dust attenuation, and reside in the middle of the regions occupied by quiescent and star-forming galaxies in the UVJ diagram. Compared with blue and red galaxy populations at z<2, green galaxies have intermediate compactness…
We use the \eagle\ simulations to study the connection between the quenching timescale, $τ_{\rm Q}$, and the physical mechanisms that transform star-forming galaxies into passive galaxies. By quantifying $τ_{\rm Q}$ in two complementary ways - as the time over which (i) galaxies traverse the green valley on the colour-mass diagram, or (ii) leave the main sequence of star formation and subsequently arrive on the passive cloud in specific star formation rate (SSFR)-mass space - we find that the $τ_{\rm Q}$ distribution of high-mass centrals, low-mass centrals and satellites are divergent. In the…
Recent studies of galaxies in the local Universe, including those in the Local Group, find that the efficiency of environmental (or satellite) quenching increases dramatically at satellite stellar masses below ~ $10^8\ {\rm M}_{\odot}$. This suggests a physical scale where quenching transitions from a slow "starvation" mode to a rapid "stripping" mode at low masses. We investigate the plausibility of this scenario using observed HI surface density profiles for a sample of 66 nearby galaxies as inputs to analytic calculations of ram-pressure and viscous stripping. Across a broad range of host p…
To investigate the effects of environment in the quenching phase, we study the empirical relations for green valley (GV) galaxies between overdensity and other physical properties (i.e., effective radius $r_{\rm e}$, Sérsic indices $n$, and specific star formation rate sSFR). Based on five 3D-{\it HST}/CANDELS fields, we construct a large sample of 2126 massive ($M_{\star} > 10^{10} M_{\sun}$) GV galaxies at $0.5<z<2.5$ and split it into the higher overdensity quarter and the lower overdensity quarter. The results shows that GV galaxies in denser environment have higher $n$ values and lower sS…
We study the role of cold gas in quenching star formation in the green valley by analysing ALMA $^{12}$CO (1-0) observations of three galaxies with resolved optical spectroscopy from the MaNGA survey. We present resolution-matched maps of the star formation rate and molecular gas mass. These data are used to calculate the star formation efficiency (SFE) and gas fraction ($f_{\rm~gas}$) for these galaxies separately in the central `bulge' regions and outer disks. We find that, for the two galaxies whose global specific star formation rate (sSFR) deviates most from the star formation main sequen…
We study the efficiency of galactic feedback in the early Universe by stacking the [C II] 158 um emission in a large sample of normal star-forming galaxies at 4 < z < 6 from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [C II] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. Searching for typical signatures of outflows in the high-velocity tails of the stacked [C II] profile, we observe (i) deviations from a single-component Gaussian model in the combined residuals and (ii) broad emission in the stacked [C II] spectrum, with velocities of |v|<~ 500 km/s. The significance of these features increases when stacking the s…
Massive quiescent compact galaxies have been discovered at high redshifts, associated with rapid compaction and cessation of star formation (SF). In this work we set out to quantify the time-scales in which SF is quenched in compact galaxies at intermediate redshifts. For this, we select a sample of green valley galaxies within the COSMOS field in the midst of quenching their SF at $0.5<z<1.0$ that exhibit varying degrees of compactness. Based on the H$δ$ absorption line and the 4000 Å\ break of coadded zCOSMOS spectra for sub-samples of normal-sized and compact galaxies we determine quenching…
The equivalent widths of MgII absorption in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) trace the global star formation rate up to $z<6$, are larger for star-forming galaxies than passively-evolving galaxies, and decrease with increasing distance from the galaxy. We delve further into the physics involved by investigating gas kinematics and cloud column density distributions as a function of galaxy color, redshift, and projected distance from the galaxy (normalized by galaxy virial radius, $D/R_{\rm vir}$). For 39 isolated galaxies at $0.3<z_{\rm gal}<1.0$, we have detected MgII absorption in high-resolut…
One key problem in astrophysics is understanding how and why galaxies switch off their star formation, building the quiescent population that we observe in the local Universe. From the GAMA and VIPERS surveys, we use spectroscopic indices to select quiescent and candidate transition galaxies. We identify potentially rapidly transitioning post-starburst galaxies, and slower transitioning green-valley galaxies. Over the last 8 Gyrs the quiescent population has grown more slowly in number density at high masses (M$_*>10^{11}$M$_\odot$) than at intermediate masses (M$_*>10^{10.6}$M$_\odot$). There…
We study the significance of mergers in the quenching of star formation in galaxies at z~1 by examining their color-mass distributions for different morphology types. We perform two-dimensional light profile fits to GOODS iz images of ~5000 galaxies and X-ray selected active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosts in the CANDELS/GOODS-north and south fields in the redshift range 0.7<z<1.3. Distinguishing between bulge-dominated and disk-dominated morphologies, we find that disks and spheroids have distinct color-mass distributions, in agreement with studies at z~0. The smooth distribution across colors f…
While dwarf galaxies observed in the field are overwhelmingly star-forming, dwarf galaxies in environments as dense or denser than the Milky Way are overwhelmingly quenched. In this paper, we explore quenching in the lower density environment of the Small-Magellanic-Cloud-mass galaxy NGC 3109 ($\text{M}_* \sim 10^8 \, \text{M}_\odot$), which hosts two known dwarf satellite galaxies (Antlia and Antlia B), both of which are HI deficient compared to similar galaxies in the field and have recently stopped forming stars. Using a new semi-analytic model in concert with the measured star formation hi…
We use zoom simulations to show how merger-driven disruption of the gas disc in a galaxy provides its central active galactic nucleus (AGN) with fuel to drive outflows that entrain and expel a significant fraction of the circumgalactic medium (CGM). This in turn suppresses replenishment of the interstellar medium, causing the galaxy to quench up to several Gyr after the merger. We start by performing a zoom simulation of a present-day star-forming disc galaxy with the EAGLE galaxy formation model. Then, we re-simulate the galaxy with controlled changes to its initial conditions, using the gene…
We study the morphology and kinematics of the ionization state of the gas in four 'green valley' early-type galaxies at different stages of their transition from a 'blue cloud' of star-forming galaxies to the sequence of passive evolution. The previous HI mapping of the considered sample reveals a spatial offset between the cold gas reservoirs and stellar discs depending on the post-starburst age. Consideration of the ionized-gas properties is essential to understand the role of various feedback processes in star formation quenching. We performed long-slit and 3D optical spectroscopic observat…
We use stellar mass functions to study the properties and the significance of quenching through major galaxy mergers. In addition to SDSS DR7 and Galaxy Zoo 1 data, we use samples of visually selected major galaxy mergers and post merger galaxies. We determine the stellar mass functions of the stages that we would expect major merger quenched galaxies to pass through on their way from the blue cloud to the red sequence: 1: major merger, 2: post merger, 3: blue early type, 4: green early type and 5: red early type. Based on the similar mass function shapes we conclude that major mergers are lik…
The evolution of satellite galaxies is shaped by their constant interaction with the circum galactic medium surrounding central galaxies, which in turn may be affected by gas and energy ejected from the central supermassive black hole. However, the nature of this coupling between black holes and galaxies is highly debated and observational evidence remains scarce. Here we report an analysis of archival data on 124,163 satellite galaxies in the potential wells of 29,631 dark matter halos with masses between 10$^{12}$ and $10^{14}$ solar masses. We find that quiescent satellites are relatively l…
We present a study on the stellar populations and stellar ages of sub-sample of far-infrared AGN and non-AGN green valley analysed in Mahoro et al. (2017,2019) at 0.6 < z < 1.0 using the data from the COSMOS field. We used long-slit spectroscopy and derived stellar populations and stellar ages using the stellar population synthesis code "STARLIGHT" and analysed the available Lick/IDS indices, such as Dn4000 and $\rm{Hδ_{A}}$. We find that both FIR AGN and non-AGN green valley galaxies are dominated by intermediate stellar populations 67 % and 53 %, respectively. The median stellar ages for AGN…
The majority of baryons reside beyond the optical extent of a galaxy in the circumgalactic and intergalactic media (CGM/IGM). Gaseous halos are inextricably linked to the appearance of their host galaxies through a complex story of accretion, feedback, and continual recycling. The energetic processes, which define the state of gas in the CGM, are the same ones that 1) regulate stellar growth so that it is not over-efficient, and 2) create the diversity of today's galaxy colors, SFRs, and morphologies spanning Hubble's Tuning Fork Diagram. They work in concert to set the speed of growth on the …
Different mechanisms for quenching star formation in galaxies are commonly invoked in the literature, but the relative impact of each one at different cosmic epochs is still unknown. In particular, the relation between these processes and morphological transformation remains poorly understood. In this work, we measure the effectiveness of changes in star formation rates by analysing a new parameter, the Star Formation Acceleration (SFA), as a function of galaxy morphology. This methodology is capable of identifying both bursting and quenching episodes that occurred in the preceding 300 Myrs. W…
The star formation and gas content of satellite galaxies around the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) are depleted relative to more isolated galaxies in the Local Group (LG) at fixed stellar mass. We explore the environmental regulation of gas content and quenching of star formation in $z=0$ galaxies at $M*=10^{5-10}\rm{M}_{\odot}$ around 14 MW-mass hosts from the FIRE-2 simulations. Lower-mass satellites ($M*\lesssim10^7\rm{M}_{\odot}$) are mostly quiescent and higher-mass satellites ($M*\gtrsim10^8\rm{M}_{\odot}$) are mostly star-forming, with intermediate-mass satellites ($M*\approx10^{7-8…
In the local Universe, the efficiency for converting baryonic gas into stars is very low. In dark matter halos where galaxies form and evolve, the average efficiency varies with galaxy stellar mass and has a maximum of about twenty percent for Milky-Way-like galaxies. The low efficiency at higher mass is believed to be produced by some quenching processes, such as the feedback from active galactic nuclei. We perform an analysis of weak lensing and satellite kinematics for SDSS central galaxies. Our results reveal that the efficiency is much higher, more than sixty percent, for a large populati…
