SrxBi2Se3 is a candidate topological superconductor but its superconductivity requires the intercalation of Sr by into the van-der-Waals gaps of Bi2Se3. We report the synthesis of SrxBi2Se3 thin films by molecular beam epitaxy, and we characterize their structural, vibrational and electrical properties. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy show evidence of substitutional Sr alloying into the structure, while transport measurements allow us to correlate the increasing Sr content with an increased n-type doping, but do not reveal superconductivity down to 1.5K. Our results suggest that Sr predominantly occupies sites within a quintuple layer, simultaneously substituting for Bi and as an interstitial. Our results motivate future density functional studies to further investigate the energetics of Sr substitution into Bi2Se3.
Superconducting thin films of magnesium diboride (MgB$_2$) were prepared on MgO (001) substrate by a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method with the co-evaporation conditions of low deposition rate in ultra-high vacuum. The structural and physical properties of the films were studied by RHEED, XRD, XPS, resistivity and magnetization measurements. All films demonstrated superconductivity without use of any post-annealing process. The highest {\it T}$_{c,onset}$ determined by resistivity measurement was about 33K in the present samples.Anisotropic superconducting properties were evaluated by the resi…
We report the successful growth of tetragonal FeS film with one or two unit-cell (UC) thickness on SrTiO3(001) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. Large lattice constant mismatch with the substrate leads to high density of defects in single UC FeS, while it has been significantly reduced in double UC thick film due to the lattice relaxation. The scanning tunneling spectra on the surface of FeS thin film reveal the electronic doping effect of single UC FeS from the substrate. In addition, at the Fermi level, the energy gaps of approximate 1.5 meV are observed in films of both thicknesses at 4.…
As-grown superconducting MgB_2 thin films have been grown on SrTiO_3(001), MgO(001), and Al_2O_3(0001) substrates by a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method with novel co-evaporation conditions of low deposition rate in ultra-high vacuum. The structural and physical properties of the films were studied by RHEED, XRD, electrical resistivity measurements, and SQUID magnetometer. The RHEED patterns indicate three-dimensional growth for MgB_2. The highest T_c determined by resistivity measurement was about 36K in these samples. And a clear Meissner effect below T_c was observed using magnetic suscep…
The stoichiometric "111" iron-based superconductor, LiFeAs, has attacted great research interest in recent years. For the first time, we have successfully grown LiFeAs thin film by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on SrTiO3(001) substrate, and studied the interfacial growth behavior by reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (LT-STM). The effects of substrate temperature and Li/Fe flux ratio were investigated. Uniform LiFeAs film as thin as 3 quintuple-layer (QL) is formed. Superconducting gap appears in LiFeAs films thicker than 4 QL a…
We report on the epitaxial growth and surface structure of infinite-layer cuprate Sr1-xNdxCuO2 films on SrTiO3(001) substrates by combining ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy. Careful substrate temperature and flux control has been used to achieve single-phase, stoichiometric, and c-axis oriented films. The surface of the films is usually characterized by a mixed CuO2 surface and gridlike superstructure. The superstructure exhibits a periodicity of 3.47 nm that corresponds to a coincidence lattice between the overlayer peroxide SrO2 and underlying C…
Gray tin, also known as α-Sn, has been attracting research interest recent years due to its topological nontrivial properties predicted theoretically. The Dirac linear band dispersion has been proved experimentally by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We have grown a series of α-Sn thin film samples in two types with different substrates and thicknesses by molecular beam epitaxy. To explore the possible exotic physical properties related to the topological band structures, we have measured the electrical transport properties of our α-Sn thin film samples and observed multiple supercon…
The superconductor Sn$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Te is derived from the topological crystalline insulator SnTe and is a candidate topological superconductor. So far, high-quality thin films of this material have not been available, even though such samples would be useful for addressing the nature of its superconductivity. Here we report the successful molecular beam epitaxy growth of superconducting Sn$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Te films by using Bi$_2$Te$_3$ as a buffer layer. The data obtained from tunnel junctions made on such films show the appearance of two superconducting gaps, which points to the coexistence …
We report growth of superconducting Sr2RuO4 films by oxide molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Careful tuning of the Ru flux with an electron beam evaporator enables us to optimize growth conditions including the Ru/Sr flux ratio and also to investigate stoichiometry effects on the structural and transport properties. The highest onset transition temperature of about 1.1 K is observed for films grown in a slightly Ru-rich flux condition in order to suppress Ru deficiency. The realization of superconducting Sr2RuO4 films via oxide MBE opens up a new route to study the unconventional superconductivity…
We report a systematic study on the growth conditions of Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te thin films by molecular beam epitaxy for maximization of superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$. Careful tuning of the flux ratios of Sn, In, and Te enables us to find an optimum condition for substituting rich In content ($x$ = 0.66) into Sn site in a single phase of Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te beyond the bulk solubility limit at ambient pressure ($x$ = 0.5). $T_\mathrm{c}$ shows a dome-shaped dependence on In content $x$ with the highest $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 4.20 K at $x$ = 0.55, being consistent to that reported f…
We investigate the complex relationship between the growth conditions and the structural and transport properties of $\mathrm{Ti_xO_y}$ thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Transport properties ranging from metallicity to superconductivity and insulating states are stabilized by effectively tuning the O/Ti ratio via the Ti flux rate and the O partial pressure, $P_{Ox}$, for films grown on (0001)-$\mathrm{Al_2 O_3}$ substrates at 850$^{\circ}$ C. A cubic $c-\mathrm{TiO_{1\pmδ}}$ buffer layer is formed for low O/Ti ratios while a corundum cr-$\mathrm{Ti_2 O_3}$ layer is formed under highe…
Wurtzite (Ga,Mn)N films showing ferromagnetic behaviour at room temperature were successfully grown on sapphire(0001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy using ammonia as nitrogen source. Magnetization measurements were carried out by a superconducting quantum interference device at the temperatures between 1.8K and 300K with magnetic field applied parallel to the film plane up to 7T. The magnetic-field dependence of magnetization of a (Ga,Mn)N film at 300K were ferromagnetic, while a GaN film showed Pauli paramagnetism like behaviour. The Curie temperatures of a (Ga,Mn)N film was estimated a…
Using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to grow multi-elemental oxides (MEO) is generally challenging, partly due to difficulty in stoichiometry control. Occasionally, if one of the elements is volatile at the growth temperature, stoichiometry control can be greatly simplified using adsorption-controlled growth mode. Otherwise, stoichiometry control remains one of the main hurdles to achieving high quality MEO film growths. Here, we report another kind of self-limited growth mode, dubbed diffusion-assisted epitaxy, in which excess species diffuses into the substrate and leads to the desired stoichi…
Remote epitaxy on monolayer graphene is promising for synthesis of highly lattice mismatched materials, exfoliation of free-standing membranes, and re-use of expensive substrates. However, clear experimental evidence of a remote mechanism remains elusive. In many cases, due to contaminants at the transferred graphene/substrate interface, alternative mechanisms such as pinhole-seeded lateral epitaxy or van der Waals epitaxy can explain the resulting exfoliatable single-crystalline films. Here, we find that growth of the Heusler compound GdPtSb on clean graphene on sapphire substrates produces a…
The heteroepitaxial growth of Re (0001) films on Nb (110) surfaces has been investigated. Nb/Re bilayers were grown on A-plane sapphire -- alpha-Al2O3 (11-20) -- by molecular beam epitaxy. While Re grew with a (0001) surface, the in-plane epitaxial relationship with the underlying Nb could be best described as a combination of Kurdjumov-Sachs and Nishiyama-Wassermann orientations. This relationship was true regardless of Re film thickness. However, an evolution of the surface morphology with increasing Re thickness was observed, indicative of a Stranski-Krastanov growth mode. Re (0001) layers …
Transition metal oxide heterostructures and interfaces host a variety of exciting quantum phases and can be grown with atomic-scale precision by utilising the intensity oscillations of $in$ $situ$ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). However, establishing a stable oscillation pattern in the growth calibration of complex oxides films is very challenging and time consuming. Here, we develop a substantially more efficient and reliable growth calibration method for complex oxide films using molecular beam epitaxy.
We demonstrate the making of BaZrS3 thin films by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). BaZrS3 forms in the orthorhombic distorted-perovskite structure with corner-sharing ZrS6 octahedra. The single-step MBE process results in films smooth on the atomic scale, with near-perfect BaZrS3 stoichiometry and an atomically-sharp interface with the LaAlO3 substrate. The films grow epitaxially via two, competing growth modes: buffered epitaxy, with a self-assembled interface layer that relieves the epitaxial strain, and direct epitaxy, with rotated-cube-on-cube growth that accommodates the large lattice consta…
Remote epitaxy is a promising approach for synthesizing exfoliatable crystalline membranes and enabling epitaxy of materials with large lattice mismatch. However, the atomic scale mechanisms for remote epitaxy remain unclear. Here we experimentally demonstrate that GaSb films grow on graphene-terminated GaSb (001) via a seeded lateral epitaxy mechanism, in which pinhole defects in the graphene serve as selective nucleation sites, followed by lateral epitaxy and coalescence into a continuous film. Remote interactions are not necessary in order to explain the growth. Importantly, the small size …
Epitaxial thin films of 1T-HfTe2 semimetal are grown by MBE on AlN(0001) substrates. The measured in-plane lattice parameter indicates an unstrained film which is also azimuthally aligned with the AlN substrate, albeit with an in-plane mosaic spread, as it would be expected for van der Waals epitaxy. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first principles electronic band structure calculations show steep linearly dispersing conduction and valence bands which cross near the Brillouin zone center, providing evidence that HfTe2 /AlN is an epitaxial topological Dirac semimetal.
Hole-doped perovskite bismuthates such as Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$BiO$_3$ and Sr$_{1-x}$K$_x$BiO$_3$ are well-known bismuth-based oxide high-transition-temperature superconductors. Reported thin bismuthate films show relatively low quality, likely due to their large lattice mismatch with the substrate and a low sticking coefficient of Bi at high temperatures. Here, we report the successful epitaxial thin film growth of the parent compound strontium bismuthate SrBiO$_3$ on SrO-terminated SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Two different growth methods, high-temperature co-deposition or…
We have fabricated Na_xCoO_2 thin films via lateral diffusion of sodium into Co_3O_4 (111) epitaxial films (reactive solid-phase epitaxy: Ref. 4). The environment of thermal diffusion is key to the control of the sodium content in thin films. From the results of x-ray diffraction and in-plane resistivity, the epitaxial growth and the sodium contents of these films were identified. The thermoelectric measurements show a large thermoelectric power similar to that observed in single crystals. The quasiparticle scattering rate is found to approach zero at low temperatures, consistent with the smal…
We demonstrate selective area epitaxy of GaAs films using patterned graphene masks on a Ge (001) substrate. The GaAs selectively grows on exposed regions of the Ge substrate, for graphene spacings as large as 10 microns. The selectivity is highly dependent on the growth temperature and annealing time, which we explain in terms of temperature dependent sticking coefficients and surface diffusion. The high nucleation selectivity over several microns sets constraints on experimental realizations of remote epitaxy.
Recently, theorists have predicted many materials with a low magnetic moment and large spin-polarization for spintronic applications. These compounds are predicted to form in the inverse Heusler structure, however, many of these compounds have been found to phase segregate. In this study, ordered Cr2CoGa thin films were synthesized without phase segregation using molecular beam epitaxy. The present as-grown films exhibit a low magnetic moment from antiferromagnetically coupled Cr and Co atoms as measured with SQUID magnetometry and soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Electrical measurement…
Ferromagnetic properties of In1-xMnxAs thin films were investigated. Room temperature ferromagnetic order was observed in nominally single-phase films with x = 0.01-0.10. Magnetization measurements indicated that these In1-xMnxAs samples had a Curie temperature of 333 K. The Curie temperature was independent of Mn concentration. The temperature dependent magnetization along with the magnitude of the saturation magnetization and microstructural data indicate that the source of the high-temperature ferromagnetism in single-phase films is not attributable to MnAs nanoprecipitates. The high transi…
Epitaxial thin films of the highly spin polarized Heusler compound Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al are deposited by dc magnetron sputtering. It is shown by XRD and TEM investigations how the use of an Fe buffer layer on MgO(100) substrates supports the growth of highly ordered Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al at low deposition temperatures. The as grown samples show a relatively large ordered magnetic moment of mu = 3.0mu_B/f.u. providing evidence for a low level of disorder.
Atomically thin PtSe2 films have attracted extensive research interests for potential applications in high-speed electronics, spintronics and photodetectors. Obtaining high quality, single crystalline thin films with large size is critical. Here we report the first successful layer-by-layer growth of high quality PtSe2 films by molecular beam epitaxy. Atomically thin films from 1 ML to 22 ML have been grown and characterized by low-energy electron diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. Moreover, a systematic thickness dependent study of the electronic structure i…
The effect of film morphology on its surface chemistry and band structure has been analyzed for gallium nitride epitaxial films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The film morphology has been studied using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, and the bandstructure, defect and emission properties have been studied by X ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. It was found that the highly porous GaN nanowall network shows the highest relative conductivity and does not have defect related luminescence. The flatter films were more resistive and showed…
Mn doped GaAs thin films were grown using molecular beam epitaxy at high and low substrate temperatures. The elemental concentration depth profiles in the thin films were determined by using Auger electron spectroscopy combined with ion etching. The Mn concentration is higher near the surface and then decreases with depth for films grown at high substrate temperatures. The Mn concentration profile is much more uniform when films are grown using a low substrate temperature. What was unexpectedly found are high levels of oxygen in the low substrate temperature grown thin films.
Here, we report a detailed method of growing LaAlGe, a non-magnetic Weyl semimetal, thin film on silicon(100) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy and their structural and electrical characterizations. 50 nm thick LaAlGe films were deposited and annealed for 16 hours in situ at a temperature 793 K. As-grown high-quality films showed uniform surface topography and near ideal stoichiometry with a body-centered tetragonal crystal structure. Temperature-dependent longitudinal resistivity can be understood with dominant interband s-d electron-phonon scattering in the temperature range 5-40 K. Hall …
The growth of atomically-flat thin films of ferroelectric PbTiO3 on SrTiO3 substrates, using molecular beam epitaxy, is reported. The main issue in the growth of these materials is the high volatility of lead. This can be largely overcome by using PbO, instead of Pb, as a source and by using atomic oxygen during growth. The continuous decrease of the out-of-plane lattice parameter with increasing temperature in the investigated range, indicates that PbTiO3 is still ferroelectric at the growth temperature (Tg= 600oC), which agrees with the theoretical prediction of TC= 765oC (compared to TCbulk…
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a layered two-dimensional material with properties that make it promising as a dielectric in various applications. We report the growth of h-BN films on Ni foils from elemental B and N using molecular beam epitaxy. The presence of crystalline h-BN over the entire substrate is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy is used to examine the morphology and continuity of the synthesized films. A scanning electron microscopy study of films obtained using shorter depositions offers insight into the nucleation and growth behavior of h-BN on the Ni sub…
MnBi2Te4 has recently been predicted and shown to be a magnetic topological insulator with intrinsic antiferromagnetic order. However, it remains a challenge to grow stoichiometric MnBi2Te4 films by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and to observe pure antiferromagnetic order by magnetometry. We report on a detailed study of MnBi2Te4 films grown on Si(111) by MBE with elemental sources. Films of about 100 nm thickness are analyzed in stoichiometric, structural, magnetic and magnetotransport properties with high accuracy. High-quality MnBi2Te4 films with nearly perfect septuple-layer structure are r…
We report comprehensive x-ray diffraction studies of the crystal structure and epitaxy of thin films of the topological insulator Bi2Te3 grown on Si (1 1 1). The films are single crystals of high crystalline quality, which strongly depends on that of their substrates, with in-plane epitaxial relationships of Bi2Te3 [2 1 -3 0] || Si [1 -1 0] and Bi2Te3 [0 1 -1 0] || Si [1 1 -2] along which the lattices of 1x3 Bi2Te3 and 2x2 Si supercells are well matched. As the samples age, we observe loss of crystalline Bi2Te3 film thickness accompanied with roughening of the crystalline interfaces, formation…
Bi$_2$Te$_3$ is a material with high efficiency of thermoelectric energy conversion. Recently, it was also recognized as a topological insulator, and is often used as the basis for creation of other types of topological matter. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is widely considered as a simple method for growing of multicomponent films, but not as a tool for van der Waals epitaxy. We demonstrate here that the van der Waals epitaxy of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ is indeed impossible in vacuum PLD, but is possible in the presence of a background gas, which is confirmed by the results of scanning tunneling microsco…
We studied structural, optical and magnetic properties of high-quality 5 and 15% Co-doped ZnO films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on (0001)-sapphire substrates. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and magnetic measurements with SQUID magnetometer show clear ferromagnetic behavior of the films up to room temperature whereas they are antiferromagnetic below 200 K approximately. Temperature dependence of the carrier mobility was determined using Raman line shape analysis of the longitudinal-optical-phonon-plasmon coupled modes. It shows that the microscopic mechanism for ferro…
Ultrathin films of Na3Bi on insulating substrates are desired for opening a bulk band gap and generating the quantum spin Hall effect from a topological Dirac semimetal, though continuous films in the few nanometer regime have been difficult to realize. Here, we utilize alternating layer molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to achieve uniform and continuous single crystal films of Na3Bi(0001) on insulating Al2O3(0001) substrates and demonstrate electrical transport on films with 3.8 nm thickness (4 unit cells). The high material quality is confirmed through in situ reflection high-energy electron diff…
We analyze the structural and magnetic characteristics of (111)-oriented lutetium iron garnet (Lu$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$) films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy, for films as thin as 2.8 nm. Thickness-dependent measurements of the in- and out-of-plane ferromagnetic resonance allow us to quantify the effects of two-magnon scattering, along with the surface anisotropy and the saturation magnetization. We achieve effective damping coefficients of $11.1(9) \times 10^{-4}$ for 5.3 nm films and $32(3) \times 10^{-4}$ for 2.8 nm films, among the lowest values reported to date for any insulating ferrimagnet…
We have carried out the growth of h-RFeO3 (001) (R=Lu, Yb) thin films on Fe3O4 (111)/Al2O3 (001) substrates, and studied the effect of the h-RFeO3 (001)/Fe3O4 (111) interfaces on the epitaxy and magnetism. The observed epitaxial relations between h-RFeO3 and Fe3O4 indicates an unusual matching of Fe sub-lattices rather than a matching of O sub-lattices. The out-of-plane direction was found to be the easy magnetic axis for h-YbFeO3 (001) but the hard axis for Fe3O4 (111) in the h-YbFeO3 (001)/Fe3O4 (111)/Al2O3 (001) films, suggesting a perpendicular magnetic alignment at the h-YbFeO3 (001)/Fe3O…
Materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) effect with high Curie temperature ($T_C$) is essential in applications. In this work, $Cr_2Te_3$ thin films showing PMA with $T_C$ ranging from 165 K to 295 K were successfully grown on $Al_2O_3$ by the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) technique. The structural analysis, magneto-transport and magnetic characterizations were conducted to study the physical origin of the improved $T_C$. In particular, ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering competition were investigated. A phenomenological model based on the coupling degree betw…
We have deposited Co films on the GaAs(001) surface by using an e-beam evaporation method. The thicknesses of the Co films are measured by using x-ray reflectivity and Rutherford backscattering. The magnetic properties of the films have been measured using superconducting quantum interference device. The magnetization of the films was found to decrease with increasing film thickness. The slight degradation of magnetic properties is attributed to increasing roughness on the Co surface or the Co/GaAs interface during the Co deposition.
Anti-ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ type $RE_2$O$_2$Sb ($RE$ = rare earth) with Sb square net has shown insulating conduction so far. Here we report the synthesis of La$_2$O$_2$Sb epitaxial thin films for the first time by multilayer solid-phase epitaxy. The valence state of Sb was about -2 evaluated from X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurement, and the indirect band gap of 0.17 eV was observed. The La$_2$O$_2$Sb epitaxial thin film showed unexpectedly high electrical conduction as a narrow gap semiconductor, whose resistivity at room temperature was approximately ten-thousand-fold lower than that of La$…
Materials informatics exploiting machine learning techniques, e.g., Bayesian optimization (BO), has the potential to offer high-throughput optimization of thin-film growth conditions through incremental updates of machine learning models in accordance with newly measured data. Here, we demonstrated BO-based molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) of SrRuO3, one of the most-intensively studied materials in the research field of oxide electronics, mainly owing to its unique nature as a ferromagnetic metal. To simplify the intricate search space of entangled growth conditions, we ran the BO for a single con…
Here we report a method to fabricate high quality Bi2Se3 thin films using molecular beam epitaxy with a radio frequency cracker cell as an atomic selenium source. With rates close to exact stoichiometry, optimal layer-by-layer growth of high quality Bi2Se3 thin films with smooth surfaces, has been achieved on CaF2(111) substrates and Si(111) substrates with a thin CaF2 buffer layer(CaF2/Si). Transport measurements show a characteristic weak antilocalization mangnetoresistance, with emergence of weak localization in the ultrathin film limit. Quantum Oscillations attributed to the topological su…
Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide films with distorted trigonal (1T$^\prime$) phase have been predicted to be candidates for realizing quantum spin Hall effect. Growth of 1T$^\prime$ film and experimental investigation of its electronic structure are critical. Here we report the electronic structure of 1T$^\prime$-MoTe$_2$ films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Growth of the 1T$^\prime$-MoTe$_2$ film depends critically on the substrate temperature, and successful growth of the film is indicated by streaky stripes in the reflection high energy electron diffraction and sharp …
We report on the growth of epitaxial Sr2RuO4 films using a hybrid molecular beam epitaxy approach in which a volatile precursor containing RuO4 is used to supply ruthenium and oxygen. The use of the precursor overcomes a number of issues encountered in traditional MBE that uses elemental metal sources. Phase-pure, epitaxial thin films of Sr2RuO4 are obtained. At high substrate temperatures, growth proceeds in a layer-by-layer mode with intensity oscillations observed in reflection high-energy electron diffraction. Films are of high structural quality, as documented by x-ray diffraction, atomic…
GaMnAs thin films with different Mn doping concentrations were grown via molecular beam epitaxy using a substrate temperature of 250 °C. The thin films were investigated using photoluminescence (PL) measurements from 8 to 300 K. Transitions involving Mn acceptors were identified and a binding energy of ~0.1 eV was found. A Mn doping concentration dependent PL spectrum was found to lend insight into the film quality at a local level. Temperature dependent PL studies show that the doping related emissions drop faster in energy than other peaks with increasing temperature, indicating that they ar…
Fe$_{3}$Si/Ge(Fe,Si)/Fe$_{3}$Si thin film stacks were grown by a combination of molecular beam epitaxy and solid phase epitaxy (Ge on Fe$_{3}$Si). The stacks were analyzed using electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The Ge(Fe,Si) films crystallize in the well oriented, layered tetragonal structure FeGe$_{2}$ with space group P4mm. This kind of structure does not exist as a bulk material and is stabilized by solid phase epitaxy of Ge on Fe$_{3}$Si. We interpret this as an ordering phenomenon induced by minimization of the elastic energy of the epitaxial f…
Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are critical to combatting global warming. Nevertheless, their intermittent energy generation requires the development of large-scale grid energy storage, in contrast to the on-demand generation of coal-based power plants. Sodium-ion batteries offer a promising potential technology, yet because sodium ions are larger than lithium ions, sodium-ion intercalation results in more drastic structural rearrangements. An improved understanding of structural dynamics and ionic diffusion pathways is crucial to developing more durable sodium-ion batteries. …
SrMoO$_3$ is a promising material for its excellent electrical conductivity, but growing high-quality thin films remains a challenge. Here we synthesized epitaxial films of SrMoO$_3$ using the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) technique under a low oxygen-flow rate. Introduction of SrTiO$_3$ buffer layers of 4--8 unit cells between the film and the (001)-oriented SrTiO$_3$ or KTaO$_3$ substrate was crucial to remove impurities and/or roughness of the film surface. The obtained film shows improved electrical conductivities as compared with films obtained by other techniques. The high quality of the …
Liquid phase epitaxy of an 18 nm thick Yttrium Iron garnet (YIG) film is achieved. Its magnetic properties are investigated in the 100 -- 400 K temperature range, as well as the influence of a 3 nm thick Pt overlayer on them. The saturation magnetization and the magnetocrystalline cubic anisotropy of the bare YIG film behave similarly to bulk YIG. A damping parameter of only a few $10^{-4}$ is measured, together with a low inhomogeneous contribution to the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth. The magnetic relaxation increases upon decreasing temperature, which can be partly ascribed to impurity …
We have synthesized Fe$_{1+y}$Te thin films by means of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) under Te-limited growth conditions. We found that epitaxial layer-by-layer growth is possible for a wide range of excess Fe values, wider than expected from what is known on the bulk material. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Fe L$_{2,3}$ and Te M$_{4,5}$ edges, we observed that films with high excess Fe contain ferromagnetic clusters while films with lower excess Fe remain nonmagnetic. Moreover, x-ray absorption spectroscopy showed that it is possible to obtain films with very simil…
In1-xMnxAs diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) thin films have been grown using metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). Tricarbonyl(methylcyclopentadienyl)manganese was used as the Mn source. Nominally single-phase, epitaxial films were achieved with Mn content as high as x=0.14 using growth temperatures Tg>475 C. For lower growth temperatures and higher Mn concentrations, nanometer scale MnAs precipitates were detected within the In1-xMnxAs matrix. Magnetic properties of the films were investigated using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Room-temperature f…
We demonstrate the growth of thin films of molybdenum ditelluride and molybdenum diselenide on sapphire substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. In-situ structural and chemical analyses reveal stoichiometric layered film growth with atomically smooth surface morphologies. Film growth along the (001) direction is confirmed by X-ray diffraction, and the crystalline nature of growth in the 2H phase is evident from Raman spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy is used to confirm the layered film structure and hexagonal arrangement of surface atoms. Temperature dependent electrical measurements…
