Gray tin, also known as α-Sn, has been attracting research interest recent years due to its topological nontrivial properties predicted theoretically. The Dirac linear band dispersion has been proved experimentally by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We have grown a series of α-Sn thin film samples in two types with different substrates and thicknesses by molecular beam epitaxy. To explore the possible exotic physical properties related to the topological band structures, we have measured the electrical transport properties of our α-Sn thin film samples and observed multiple superconducting transitions. We have identified the transitions above 4.5 K, besides the transition maybe related to the \b{eta} phase around 3.7 K. The changes of the superconducting properties over time reflect the aging effects in our samples. We have also confirmed the strain effects on the superconducting transitions through altering the relative thickness of our samples.
As-grown superconducting MgB_2 thin films have been grown on SrTiO_3(001), MgO(001), and Al_2O_3(0001) substrates by a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method with novel co-evaporation conditions of low deposition rate in ultra-high vacuum. The structural and physical properties of the films were studied by RHEED, XRD, electrical resistivity measurements, and SQUID magnetometer. The RHEED patterns indicate three-dimensional growth for MgB_2. The highest T_c determined by resistivity measurement was about 36K in these samples. And a clear Meissner effect below T_c was observed using magnetic suscep…
Superconducting thin films of magnesium diboride (MgB$_2$) were prepared on MgO (001) substrate by a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method with the co-evaporation conditions of low deposition rate in ultra-high vacuum. The structural and physical properties of the films were studied by RHEED, XRD, XPS, resistivity and magnetization measurements. All films demonstrated superconductivity without use of any post-annealing process. The highest {\it T}$_{c,onset}$ determined by resistivity measurement was about 33K in the present samples.Anisotropic superconducting properties were evaluated by the resi…
We investigate the complex relationship between the growth conditions and the structural and transport properties of $\mathrm{Ti_xO_y}$ thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Transport properties ranging from metallicity to superconductivity and insulating states are stabilized by effectively tuning the O/Ti ratio via the Ti flux rate and the O partial pressure, $P_{Ox}$, for films grown on (0001)-$\mathrm{Al_2 O_3}$ substrates at 850$^{\circ}$ C. A cubic $c-\mathrm{TiO_{1\pmδ}}$ buffer layer is formed for low O/Ti ratios while a corundum cr-$\mathrm{Ti_2 O_3}$ layer is formed under highe…
The superconductor Sn$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Te is derived from the topological crystalline insulator SnTe and is a candidate topological superconductor. So far, high-quality thin films of this material have not been available, even though such samples would be useful for addressing the nature of its superconductivity. Here we report the successful molecular beam epitaxy growth of superconducting Sn$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Te films by using Bi$_2$Te$_3$ as a buffer layer. The data obtained from tunnel junctions made on such films show the appearance of two superconducting gaps, which points to the coexistence …
The heteroepitaxial growth of Re (0001) films on Nb (110) surfaces has been investigated. Nb/Re bilayers were grown on A-plane sapphire -- alpha-Al2O3 (11-20) -- by molecular beam epitaxy. While Re grew with a (0001) surface, the in-plane epitaxial relationship with the underlying Nb could be best described as a combination of Kurdjumov-Sachs and Nishiyama-Wassermann orientations. This relationship was true regardless of Re film thickness. However, an evolution of the surface morphology with increasing Re thickness was observed, indicative of a Stranski-Krastanov growth mode. Re (0001) layers …
We report the growth of NdBa2Cu3O7-d films on (100) MgO substrate by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). Large area NdBa2Cu3O7-d films with homogeneous superconducting properties were grown by precise control of stoichiometry and the optimisation of growth parameters. The stoichiometric ratio of Nd:Ba:Cu close to 1:2:3 yields films with TC of 94 K and JC values above 3.5 MA/cm2 at 77 K on bare MgO substrate. The NdBa2Cu3O7-d films grown under optimised conditions had excellent in-plane texture and good metallicity. The most significant characteristic of our MBE grown NdBa2Cu3O7-d films is the very l…
We report the successful growth of tetragonal FeS film with one or two unit-cell (UC) thickness on SrTiO3(001) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. Large lattice constant mismatch with the substrate leads to high density of defects in single UC FeS, while it has been significantly reduced in double UC thick film due to the lattice relaxation. The scanning tunneling spectra on the surface of FeS thin film reveal the electronic doping effect of single UC FeS from the substrate. In addition, at the Fermi level, the energy gaps of approximate 1.5 meV are observed in films of both thicknesses at 4.…
We report on transport properties of grain boundaries fabricated in YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films grown by the liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) technique on MgO asymmetrical bicrystal substrate with 45o misorientation angle. In total around 10 samples have been studied. Substantial scatter of zero field values of the critical current density at 5K has been observed. The upper limit of Jc of the order of 104 A/cm2 found in our study is close to previously reported data for 45o bicrystals grown by various physical vapour deposition methods while the minimal value of Jc for the LPE grown bicrystals in strikin…
The stoichiometric "111" iron-based superconductor, LiFeAs, has attacted great research interest in recent years. For the first time, we have successfully grown LiFeAs thin film by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on SrTiO3(001) substrate, and studied the interfacial growth behavior by reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (LT-STM). The effects of substrate temperature and Li/Fe flux ratio were investigated. Uniform LiFeAs film as thin as 3 quintuple-layer (QL) is formed. Superconducting gap appears in LiFeAs films thicker than 4 QL a…
SrxBi2Se3 is a candidate topological superconductor but its superconductivity requires the intercalation of Sr by into the van-der-Waals gaps of Bi2Se3. We report the synthesis of SrxBi2Se3 thin films by molecular beam epitaxy, and we characterize their structural, vibrational and electrical properties. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy show evidence of substitutional Sr alloying into the structure, while transport measurements allow us to correlate the increasing Sr content with an increased n-type doping, but do not reveal superconductivity down to 1.5K. Our results suggest that Sr pr…
We report on the epitaxial growth and surface structure of infinite-layer cuprate Sr1-xNdxCuO2 films on SrTiO3(001) substrates by combining ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy. Careful substrate temperature and flux control has been used to achieve single-phase, stoichiometric, and c-axis oriented films. The surface of the films is usually characterized by a mixed CuO2 surface and gridlike superstructure. The superstructure exhibits a periodicity of 3.47 nm that corresponds to a coincidence lattice between the overlayer peroxide SrO2 and underlying C…
We report growth of superconducting Sr2RuO4 films by oxide molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Careful tuning of the Ru flux with an electron beam evaporator enables us to optimize growth conditions including the Ru/Sr flux ratio and also to investigate stoichiometry effects on the structural and transport properties. The highest onset transition temperature of about 1.1 K is observed for films grown in a slightly Ru-rich flux condition in order to suppress Ru deficiency. The realization of superconducting Sr2RuO4 films via oxide MBE opens up a new route to study the unconventional superconductivity…
Epitaxial films of NdFeAsO were grown on GaAs substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). All elements including oxygen were supplied from solid sources using Knudsen cells. The x-ray diffraction pattern of the film prepared with the optimum growth condition showed no indication of impurity phases. Only (00l) peaks were observed, indicating that NdFeAsO was grown with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate. The window of optimum growth condition was very narrow, but the NdFeAsO phase was grown with a very good reproducibility. Despite the absence of any appreciable secondary phase, the resi…
Theoretical and experimental studies of intrinsic Josephson junctions that naturally occur in high-Tc superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi-2212) have demonstrated their potential for novel types of compact devices for the generation and sensing of electromagnetic radiation in the THz range. Here, we show that the THz-on-a-chip concept may be realized in liquid phase epitaxial-grown (LPE) thick Bi-2212 films. We have grown μm-thick Bi-2212 LPE films on MgO substrates. These films display excellent c-axis alignment and single crystal grains of about 650x150 μm2 in size. A branched current-voltage…
The in-situ growth of superconducting MgB2 thin films was examined from various perspectives. The paper discusses (1) growth temperature, (2) the effect of excess Mg, (3) the effect of residual gas during growth, (4) the effect of in-situ annealing, (5) thickness dependence and (6) the effect of substrates. Our results provide a guide to the preparation of high-quality superconducting MgB2 films for potential electronics applications.
We have fabricated Na_xCoO_2 thin films via lateral diffusion of sodium into Co_3O_4 (111) epitaxial films (reactive solid-phase epitaxy: Ref. 4). The environment of thermal diffusion is key to the control of the sodium content in thin films. From the results of x-ray diffraction and in-plane resistivity, the epitaxial growth and the sodium contents of these films were identified. The thermoelectric measurements show a large thermoelectric power similar to that observed in single crystals. The quasiparticle scattering rate is found to approach zero at low temperatures, consistent with the smal…
Transition-metal nitrides (e.g., TiN, ZrN, TaN) are incredible materials with excellent complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor compatibility and remarkable performance in refractory plasmonics and superconducting quantum electronics. Epitaxial growth of flexible transition-metal nitride films, especially at wafer-scale, is fundamentally important for developing high-performance flexible photonics and superconducting electronics, but the study is rare thus far. This work reports the high-quality epitaxy of 2-inch titanium nitride (TiN) films on flexible fluorophlogopite-mica (F-mica) substrate…
