Recently, it has been demonstrated that the absorption of moderately doped two-dimensional semiconductors can be described in terms of exciton-polarons. In this scenario, attractive and repulsive polaron branches are formed due to interactions between a photo-excited exciton and a Fermi sea of excess charge carriers. These interactions have previously been treated in a phenomenological manner. Here, we present a microscopic derivation of the electron-exciton interactions which utilizes a mixture of variational and perturbative approaches. We find that the interactions feature classical charge-dipole behaviour in the long-range limit and that they are only weakly modified for moderate doping. We apply our theory to the absorption properties and show that the dependence on doping is well captured by a model with a phenomenological contact potential.
We present a detailed investigation of excitonic absorption in $Zn_{0.69}Cd_{0.31}Se/ZnSe$ quantum wells under the application of a perpendicular magnetic field. The large energy separation between heavy- and light-hole excitons allows us to clearly resolve and identify magneto-excitonic absorption resonant with the continuum edge of the 1S heavy-hole exciton. Experimental values of the exciton binding energy are compared with results of a theoretical model that includes the exciton-phonon interaction. The remarkable agreemeent found unambiguously indicates the predominant polaronic character …

In previous work we have argued that the optical properties of moderately doped two-dimensional semiconductors can be described in terms of excitons dressed by their interactions with a degenerate Fermi sea of additional charge carriers. These interactions split the bare exciton into attractive and repulsive exciton-polaron branches. The collective excitations of the coupled system are many-body generalizations of the bound trion and unbound states of a single electron interacting with an exciton. In this article we consider exciton-polarons in the presence of an external magnetic field that q…
Hybrid Perovskites have shown a great potential for applications in photovoltaics and light-emitting devices with high efficiency. Interaction between defect-induced trapped excitons and phonons plays an important role in understanding the emerging phenomena for such an excellent figure-of-merit. Here we demonstrate hot polarons with narrow linewidth in $\mathrm{CH_{3}NH_{3}PbBr_{3}}$ nanowires, which originate from the interaction between trapped excitons and octahedra-twist phonons. The observation of hot polarons in photoluminescence without gain methods indicates the large interaction stre…
We present a theoretical study of photo-absorption in n-doped two-dimensional (2D) and quasi-2D semiconductors that takes into account the interaction of the photocreated exciton with Fermi-sea (FS) electrons through (i) Pauli blocking, (ii) Coulomb screening, and (iii) excitation of FS electron-hole pairs---that we here restrict to one. The system we tackle is thus made of one exciton plus zero or one FS electron-hole pair. At low doping, the system ground state is predominantly made of a "trion-hole"---a trion (two opposite-spin electrons plus a valence hole) weakly bound to a FS hole---with…
The electronic exciton polaron is a hypothetical many-body quasiparticle formed by an exciton dressed with a polarized electron-hole cloud in the Fermi sea (FS). It is predicted to display rich many-body physics and unusual roton-like dispersion. Exciton polarons were recently evoked to explain the excitonic spectra of doped monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), but these studies are limited to the ground state. Excited-state exciton polarons can exhibit richer many-body physics due to their larger spatial extent, but detection is challenging due to their inherently weak signals. …

Two dimensional semiconductors provide an ideal platform for exploration of linear exciton and polariton physics, primarily due to large exciton binding energy and strong light-matter coupling. These features, however, generically imply reduced exciton-exciton interactions, hindering the realisation of active optical devices such as lasers or parametric oscillators. Here, we show that electrical injection of itinerant electrons into monolayer molybdenum diselenide allows us to overcome this limitation: dynamical screening of exciton-polaritons by electrons leads to the formation of new quasi-p…
Exciton dynamics can be strongly affected by lattice vibrations through electron-phonon coupling. This is rarely explored in two-dimensional magnetic semiconductors. Focusing on bilayer CrI3, we first show the presence of strong electron-phonon coupling through temperature-dependent photoluminescence and absorption spectroscopy. We then report the observation of periodic broad modes up to the 8th order in Raman spectra, attributed to the polaronic character of excitons. We establish that this polaronic character is dominated by the coupling between the charge-transfer exciton at 1.96 eV and a …
Elementary quasi-particles in a two dimensional electron system can be described as exciton-polarons since electron-exciton interactions ensures dressing of excitons by Fermi-sea electron-hole pair excitations. A relevant open question is the modification of this description when the electrons occupy flat-bands and electron-electron interactions become prominent. Here, we perform cavity spectroscopy of a two dimensional electron system in the strong-coupling regime where polariton resonances carry signatures of strongly correlated quantum Hall phases. By measuring the evolution of the polarito…
The elementary optical excitations of a two-dimensional electron or hole system have been identified as exciton-Fermi-polarons. Nevertheless, the connection between the bound state of an exciton and an electron, termed trion, and exciton-polarons is subject of ongoing debate. Here, we use an analogy to the Tavis-Cummings model of quantum optics to show that an exciton-polaron can be understood as a hybrid quasiparticle -- a coherent superposition of a bare exciton in an unperturbed Fermi sea and a bright collective excitation of many trions. The analogy is valid to the extent that the Chevy An…
We report a photoluminescence observation of robust excitonic polarons due to strong coupling of exciton and longitudinal optical (LO) phonon as well as Fano-type interference in high quality ZnO crystal. At low enough temperatures, the strong coupling of excitons and LO phonons leads to not only traditional Stokes lines (SLs) but also up to second-order anti-Stokes lines (ASLs) besides the zero-phonon line (ZPL). The SLs and ASLs are found to be not mirror symmetric with respect to the ZPL, strongly suggesting that they are from different coupling states of exciton and phonons. It is more int…
We study the formation dynamics of a spontaneous ferromagnetic order in single self-assembled CdMnTe quantum dots. By measuring time-resolved photoluminescence, we determine the formation times for QDs with Mn ion contents x varying from 0.01 to 0.2. At low x these times are orders of magnitude longer than exciton spin relaxation times evaluated from the decay of photoluminescence circular polarization. This allows us to conclude that the direction of the spontaneous magnetization is determined by a momentary Mn spin fluctuation rather than resulting from an optical orientation. At higher x, t…
The dynamics of a mobile quantum impurity in a degenerate Fermi system is a fundamental problem in many-body physics. The interest in this field has been renewed due to recent ground-breaking experiments with ultra-cold Fermi gases. Optical creation of an exciton or a polariton in a two-dimensional electron system embedded in a microcavity constitutes a new frontier for this field due to an interplay between cavity-coupling favoring ultra-low mass polariton formation and exciton-electron interactions leading to polaron or trion formation. Here, we present cavity spectroscopy of gate-tunable mo…
Dipolar (or spatially indirect) excitons (IXs) in semiconductor double quantum well (DQW) subjected to an electric field are neutral species with a dipole moment oriented perpendicular to the DQW plane. Here, we theoretically study interactions between IXs in stacked DQW bilayers, where the dipolar coupling can be either attractive or repulsive depending on the relative positions of the particles. By using microscopic band structure calculations to determine the electronic states forming the excitons, we show that the attractive dipolar interaction between stacked IXs deforms their electronic …
Exciton polaritons in two-dimensional semiconductors inside microcavities are powerful platforms to explore hybrid light-matter quantum systems. Here, we study a macroscopic coherent population of the lowest energy state of polaron-polaritons, which are quasiparticles formed by the dressing of exciton polaritons by particle-hole excitations in a surrounding electron gas. Using a non-perturbative many-body theory to describe exciton-electron correlations combined with a non-equilibrium theory for the macroscopically populated state, we show that the electrons strongly affect the collective prop…
Quantifying the spin-spin interactions which influence electronic transitions in organic semiconductors is crucial for understanding their magneto-optoelectronic properties. By combining a theoretical model for three spin interactions in the coherent regime with pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance experiments on MEH-PPV diodes, we quantify the spin-coupling within complexes comprising three spin-half particles. We determine that these particles form triplet-exciton:polaron pairs, where the polaron:exciton exchange is over 5 orders of magnitude weaker (less than 170 MHz) than that w…
Magnetically doped nanostructures can significantly enhance the interaction between the band carriers and the dopant atoms. Motivated by the demonstration of the enhanced sp-d exchange interaction in quantum confined structures with the increased stability of the exciton magnetic polaron (EMP), we report the quantitative and qualitative analyses of the EMP formation in CdTe/Cd_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te diluted magnetic quantum ring (QR). The QR with two different configurations: (i) the non-magnetic ring (CdTe) embedded in the semimagnetic Cd_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te matrix, and (ii) magnetically non-uniform quantum…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, with versatile experimentally accessible exciton species, offer an interesting platform for investigating the interaction between excitons and a Fermi sea of charges. Using hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated monolayer MoSe2, we study the impact of charge density tuning on the ground and excited Rydberg states in the atomic layer. Consistent excitonpolaron behavior is revealed in both photoluminescence and reflection spectra of the A exciton 1s (A:1s) Rydberg state, in contrast to previous studies. The A:2s Rydberg state provides an op…

We present a microscopic semi-analytical theory for the description of organic molecules interacting strongly with a cavity mode. Exciton-vibration coupling within the molecule and exciton-cavity interaction are treated on an equal footing by employing a temperature-dependent variational approach. The interplay between strong exciton-vibration coupling and strong exciton-cavity coupling gives rise to a hybrid ground state, which we refer to as the lower polaron polariton. Explicit expressions for the ground-state wave function, the zero-temperature quasiparticle weight of the lower polaron pol…
We present a comparative theoretical study of magnetic resonance within the polaron pair recombination (PPR) and the triplet exciton-polaron quenching (TPQ) models. Both models have been invoked to interpret the photoluminescence detected magnetic resonance (PLDMR) in $π$-conjugated materials. We show that resonance lineshapes calculated within the two models differ dramatically in several regards. First, in the PPR model, the lineshape exhibits unusual behavior upon increasing the microwave power: it evolves from fully positive at weak power to fully negative at strong power. In contrast, in …

Interlayer excitons are bound states of electrons and holes confined in separate two-dimensional layers. Due to their repulsive dipolar interaction, interlayer excitons can form a correlated liquid. If another electron-hole bilayer is present, excitons from different bilayers can exhibit mutual attraction. We study such a quadrilayer system by a hypernetted chain formalism. We compute ground state energies, pair correlation functions, and collective mode velocities as functions of the exciton densities. We estimate the critical density for the transition to a paired biexciton phase. For a stro…
Exciton-polaritons offer a versatile platform for realization of all-optical integrated logic gates due to the strong effective optical nonlinearity resulting from the exciton-exciton interactions. In most of the current excitonic materials there exists a direct connection between the exciton robustness to thermal fluctuations and the strength of exciton-exciton interaction, making materials with highest levels of exciton nonlinearity applicable at cryogenic temperatures only. Here, we show that strong polaronic effects, characteristic for perovskite materials, allow to overcome this limitatio…
Two-dimensional moiré materials provide a highly tunable platform to investigate strongly correlated electronic states. Such emergent many-body phenomena can be optically probed in moiré systems created by stacking two layers of transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors: optically injected excitons can interact with itinerant carriers occupying narrow moiré bands to form exciton-polarons sensitive to strong correlations. Here, we investigate the behaviour of excitons dressed by a Fermi sea localised by the moiré superlattice of a molybdenum diselenide (MoSe$_2$) / tungsten diselenide (WSe…

Systems supporting exciton-polaritons represent solid-state optical platforms with a strong built-in optical nonlinearity provided by exciton-exciton interactions. In conventional semiconductors with hydrogen-like excitons the nonlinearity rate demonstrates the inverse scaling with the binding energy. This makes excitons stable at room temperatures weakly interacting, which obviously limits the possibilities of practical applications of the corresponding materials for nonlinear photonics. We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically, that these limitations can be substantially softened in h…
A semiconductor quantum dot (QD) embedded within an optical microcavity is a system of fundamental importance within quantum information processing. The optimization of quantum coherence is crucial in such applications, requiring an in-depth understanding of the relevant decoherence mechanisms. We provide herein a critical review of prevalent theoretical treatments of the QD-cavity system coupled to longitudinal acoustic phonons, comparing predictions against a recently obtained exact solution. Within this review we consider a range of temperatures and exciton-cavity coupling strengths. Predic…
We study the relaxation dynamics of driven, two-dimensional semiconductors, where itinerant electrons dress optically pumped excitons to form two Fermi-polaron branches. Repulsive polarons excited around zero momentum quickly decay to the attractive branch at high momentum. Collisions with electrons subsequently lead to a slower relaxation of attractive polarons, which accumulate at the edge of the light-cone around zero momentum where the radiative loss dominates. The bosonic nature of exciton polarons enables stimulated scattering, which results in a lasing transition at higher pump power. T…
We report on the exciton formation and relaxation dynamics following photocarrier injection in a single-layer two-dimensional lead-iodide perovskite. We probe the time evolution of four distinct exciton resonances by means of time-resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopies, and find that at 5\,K a subset of excitons form on a $\lesssim$ 1-ps timescale, and that these relax subsequently to lower-energy excitons on $\sim$ 5--10\,ps with a marked temperature dependence over $<$ 100\,K. We implement a mode projection analysis that determines the relative contribution of all…
Interactions between quasiparticles are of fundamental importance and ultimately determine the macroscopic properties of quantum matter. A famous example is the phenomenon of superconductivity, which arises from attractive electron-electron interactions that are mediated by phonons or even other more exotic fluctuations in the material. Here we introduce mobile exciton impurities into a two-dimensional electron gas and investigate the interactions between the resulting Fermi polaron quasiparticles. We employ multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy on monolayer WS$_2$, which provides an ideal p…
The theory of exciton coupling to photons and LO phonons in quantum dots (QDs) and quantum-dot molecules (QDMs) is presented. Resonant-round trips of the exciton between the ground (bright) and excited (dark or bright) states mediated by the LO-phonon alter the decay time and yield the Rabi oscillation. The initial distributions of the population in the ground and the excited states dominate the oscillating amplitude and frequency. This property provides a detectable signature to the information stored in a qubit made from QD or QDM for a wide range of temperature T. Our results presented here…
Several microscopic pathways have been proposed to explain the large magnetic effects observed in organic semiconductors, but identifying and characterising which microscopic process actually influences the overall magnetic field response is challenging. Pulsed electrically-detected magnetic resonance provides an ideal platform for this task as it intrinsically monitors the charge carriers of interest and provides dynamical information which is inaccessible through conventional magnetoconductance measurements. Here we develop a general time domain theory to describe the spin-dependent reaction…
Luminescence properties of colloidal quantum dots have found applications in imaging, light-sources, and displays. Despite wide interest, several experimental observations from these quantum dots, such as the short lifetime on the scale of microseconds and a zero-longitudinal optical phonon line in low-temperature photoluminescence spectrum, remain unexplained by existing models. Here we propose a model including the effect of solid-state environment on luminescence by capturing coherent and incoherent interactions of band-edge exciton with phonon modes. Our model predicts the formation of dre…
In this paper we study the phonon's effect on the position of the 1s excitonic resonance of the fundamental absorption transition line in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides. We apply our theory to WS$_{2}$a two-dimensional material where the shift in absorption peak position has been measured as a function of temperature. The theory is composed of two ingredients only: i) the effect of longitudinal optical phonons on the absorption peak position, which we describe with second order perturbation theory; ii) the effect of phonons on the value of the single particle energy gap, whic…
We develop a consistent theory of the interlayer exciton-polaron formed in atomically-thin bilayers. Coulomb attraction between an electron and a hole situated in the different layers results in their flexural deformation and provides an efficient mechanism of the exciton coupling with flexural phonons. We study the effect of layers tension on the polaron binding energy and effective mass leading to suppression of polaron formation by the tension both in the weak and strong coupling regimes. We also consider the role of the nonlinearity related to the interaction between the out- and in-plane …
We study the excitonic dynamics of a driven quantum dot under the influence of a phonon environment, going beyond the weak exciton-phonon coupling approximation. By combining the polaron transform and time-local projection operator techniques we develop a master equation that can be valid over a much larger range of exciton-phonon coupling strengths and temperatures than the standard weak-coupling approach. For the experimentally relevant parameters considered here, we find that the weak-coupling and polaron theories give very similar predictions for low temperatures (below 30 K), while at hig…

The elementary optical excitations in two dimensional semiconductors hosting itinerant electrons are attractive and repulsive polarons -- excitons that are dynamically screened by electrons. Exciton-polarons have hitherto been studied in translationally invariant degenerate Fermi systems. Here, we show that electronic charge order breaks the excitonic translational invariance and leads to a direct optical signature in the exciton-polaron spectrum. Specifically, we demonstrate that new optical resonances appear due to spatially modulated interaction between excitons and electrons in an incompre…
The effect of external electric field on electron-hole correlation in GaAs quantum dots is investigated. The electron-hole Schrodinger equation in the presence of external electric field is solved using explicitly correlated full configuration interaction (XCFCI) method and accurate exciton binding energy and electron-hole recombination probability are obtained. The effect of the electric field was included in the 1-particle single component basis functions by performing variational polaron transformation. The quality of the wavefunction at small inter-particle distances was improved by using …
The time evolution of a quantum dot exciton in Coulomb interaction with wetting layer carriers is treated using an approach similar to the independent boson model. The role of the polaronic unitary transform is played by the scattering matrix, for which a diagrammatic, linked cluster expansion is available. Similarities and differences to the independent boson model are discussed. A numerical example is presented.
