Radio-loud magnetars display a wide variety of radio-pulse phenomenology seldom seen among the population of rotation-powered pulsars. Spectropolarimetry of the radio pulses from these objects has the potential to place constraints on their magnetic topology and unveil clues about the magnetar radio emission mechanism. Here we report on eight observations of the magnetar Swift J1818.0$-$1607 taken with the Parkes Ultra-Wideband Low receiver covering a wide frequency range from 0.7 to 4 GHz over a period of 5 months. The magnetar exhibits significant temporal profile evolution over this period, including the emergence of a new profile component with an inverted spectrum, two distinct types of radio emission mode switching, detected during two separate observations, and the appearance and disappearance of multiple polarization modes. These various phenomena are likely a result of ongoing reconfiguration of the plasma content and electric currents within the magnetosphere. Geometric fits to the linearly polarized position angle indicate we are viewing the magnetar at an angle of $\sim$99$^{\circ}$ from the spin axis, and its magnetic and rotation axes are misaligned by $\sim$112$^{\circ}$. While conducting these fits, we found the position angle swing had reversed direction on MJD 59062 compared to observations taken 15 days earlier and 12 days later. We speculate this phenomena may be evidence the radio emission from this magnetar originates from magnetic field lines associated with two co-located magnetic poles that are connected by a coronal loop.
We report on the monitoring of the final stage of the outburst from the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124, which reached $\sim$40 Eddington luminosities at the peak of the outburst. The main aim of the monitoring program with the {\it Swift}/XRT telescope was to measure the magnetic field of the neutron star using the luminosity of transition to the "propeller" state. The visibility constraints, unfortunately, did not permit us to observe the source down to the fluxes low enough to detect such a transition. The tight upper limit on the propeller luminosity $L_{\rm pr…
We report on a 350-ks NuSTAR observation of the magnetar 1E 1841-045 taken in 2013 September. During the observation, NuSTAR detected six bursts of short duration, with $T_{90}<1$ s. An elevated level of emission tail is detected after the brightest burst, persisting for $\sim$1 ks. The emission showed a power-law decay with a temporal index of 0.5 before returning to the persistent emission level. The long observation also provided detailed phase-resolved spectra of the persistent X-ray emission of the source. By comparing the persistent spectrum with that previously reported, we find that th…
With the neutron star rotating under a stationary magnetic field generating unipolar induction, charges are driven to the pulsar surface according to their signs, and are uploaded to the magnetosphere along the magnetic field lines. In the presence of an electron-positron plasma, the pulsar magnetosphere is represented by a unique magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma. The pulsar equation of force-free equilibrium is solved analytically for two configurations. The first one is a light cylinder guided jet-like open magnetosphere, and the second one is a closed magnetosphere within the light cylinder…
The Be X-ray pulsar, SMC X-3 underwent a giant outburst from 2016 August to 2017 March, which was monitored with the Swift satellite. During the outburst, its broadband flux increased dramatically, and the unabsorbed X-ray luminosity reached an extreme value of $\sim 10^{39}$ erg/s around August 24. Using the Swift/XRT data, we measure the observed pulse frequency of the neutron star to compute the orbital parameters of the binary system. After applying the orbital corrections to Swift observations, we find that the spin frequency increases steadily from 128.02 mHz on August 10 and approach to…
The 2011 outburst of Swift J1822.3--1606 was extraordinary; periodic modulations at the spin period of the underlying neutron star were clearly visible, remarkably similar to what is observed during the decaying tail of magnetar giant flares. We investigated the temporal characteristics of X-ray emission during the early phases of the outburst. We performed a periodicity search with the spectral hardness ratio (HR), and found a coherent signal near the spin period of the neutron star, but with a lag of about 3 radians. Therefore, the HR is strongly anti-correlated with the X-ray intensity, whi…
Magnetar magnetospheres are believed to be strongly twisted, due to shearing of the stellar crust by internal magnetic stresses. We present time-dependent axisymmetric simulations showing in detail the evolution of relativistic force-free magnetospheres subjected to slow twisting through large angles. When the twist amplitude is small, the magnetosphere moves quasi-statically through a sequence of equilibria of increasing free energy. At some twist amplitude the magnetosphere becomes tearing-mode unstable to forming a resistive current sheet, initiating large-scale magnetic reconnection in whi…
We study global non-axisymmetric oscillation modes and instabilities in magnetosphere- disc systems, as expected in neutron star X-ray binaries and possibly also in accreting black hole systems. Our two-dimensional magnetosphere-disc model consists of a Keplerian disc in contact with an uniformly rotating magnetosphere with low plasma density. Two types of global overstable modes exist in such systems, the interface modes and the disc inertial-acoustic modes. We examine various physical effects and parameters that influence the properties of these oscillation modes, particularly their growth r…
The detection of cyclotron resonance scattering features (CRSFs) is the only way to directly and reliably measure the magnetic field near the surface of a neutron star (NS). The broad energy coverage and large collection area of \emph{Insight}-HXMT in the hard X-ray band allowed us to detect the CRSF with the highest energy known to date, reaching about 146 keV during the 2017 outburst of the first galactic pulsing ultraluminous X-ray source (pULX) Swift J0243.6+6124. During this outburst, the CRSF was only prominent close to the peak luminosity $\sim 2\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, the highest …
I argue that the problem of electromagnetically driven electron-positron cascades in magnetospheres of neutron stars must be addressed starting from first principles. I describe a general numerical algorithm for doing self-consistent kinetic simulations of electron-positron cascades - wherein particle acceleration, pair creation and screening of the electric field are calculated simultaneously - and apply it to model the Ruderman and Sutherland cascade in one dimension. I find that pair creation is quite regular and quasi-periodic. In each cycle a blob of ultrarelativistic electron-positron pl…
Rich observational phenomenology associated with Pulsar B in PSR J0737$-$3039A/B system resembles in many respects phenomena observed in the Earth and Jupiter magnetospheres, originating due to the wind-magnetosphere interaction. We consider particle dynamics in the fast corotating magnetosphere of Pulsar B, when the spin period is shorter than the third adiabatic period. We demonstrate that trapped particles occasionally experience large radial variations of the L-parameter (effective radial distance) due to the parametric interaction of the gyration motion with the large scale electric field…
We obtained the magnetic field configurations, including both poloidal and toroidal components, throughout the interior and exterior of magnetars using a realistic equation of state. We divided the magnetized star into the hydromagnetic equilibrium core, Hall equilibrium crust and twisted force-free magnetosphere. We systematically and simultaneously calculated these regions under various boundary conditions using the Green function relaxation method, and noted the following interesting characteristics of these numerical results. First, the strength and structure of core magnetic fields affect…
Dynamics of charged particles in the vicinity of a rotating black hole embedded in the external large-scale magnetic field is numerically investigated. In particular, we consider a non-axisymmetric model in which the asymptotically uniform magnetic field is inclined with respect to the axis of rotation. We study the effect of inclination onto the prevailing dynamic regime of particle motion, i.e. we ask whether the inclined field allows regular trajectories or if instead, the deterministic chaos dominates the motion. In this contribution we further discuss the role of initial condition, partic…
In some Seyfert Galaxies, the hard X-rays that produce fluorescent emission lines are thought to be generated in a hot corona that is compact and located at only a few gravitational radii above the supermassive black hole. We consider the possibility that this X-ray source may be powered by small scale magnetic flux tubes attached to the accretion disk near the black hole. We use three dimensional, time dependent force-free simulations in a simplified setting to study the dynamics of such flux tubes as they get continuously twisted by the central compact star/black hole. We find that, the dyna…
We consider the motion of charged particles in the vacuum magnetospheres of rotating neutron stars with a strong surface magnetic field, B>10^(12) G. The electrons and positrons falling into the magnetosphere or produced in it are shown to be captured by the force-free surface EB=0. Using the Dirac-Lorentz equation, we investigate the dynamics of particle capture and subsequent motion near the force-free surface. The particle energy far from the force-free surface has been found to be determined by the balance between the power of the forces of an accelerating electric field and the intensity …
Propagation and dynamics of electromagnetic vortex solitons have been studied in the electron positron ion plasmas of super-Eddington active galactic nuclei (AGN). Existence and stability of such structures is demonstrated for highly transparent AGN plasma media. Possible implications of dynamical features and corresponding observational signatures are discussed.
Dynamics of charged matter in the oblique black hole magnetosphere is investigated. In particular, we adopt a model consisting of a rotating black hole embedded in the external large-scale magnetic field that is inclined arbitrarily with respect to the rotation axis. Breaking the axial symmetry appears to have profound consequences regarding the dynamics of particles and it also poses some methodological difficulties. In this contribution we discuss the applicability of the method of effective potential for the non-axisymmetric model and show that it may only be applied in the appropriate refe…
We present a spectral study of the ultraluminous Be/X-ray transient pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 using Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations during the system's 2017--2018 giant outburst. The 1.2--10~keV energy spectrum of the source can be approximated with an absorbed cut-off power law model. We detect strong, luminosity-dependent emission lines in the 6--7 keV energy range. A narrow 6.42 keV line, observed in the sub-Eddington regime, is seen to evolve into a broad Fe-line profile in the super-Eddington regime. Other features are found at 6.67 and 6.97 keV in the Fe-l…
We report a detailed spectral study of Swift~J1357.2-0933 low-mass X-ray binary during its 2017 outburst using {\it Swift} and {\it NuSTAR} observations. We fit the data with two component advective flow (TCAF) model and power-law model. We observe that the source is in hard state during the outburst, where the size of the Compton cloud changes significantly with disc accretion rate. The typical disc accretion rate for this source is $\sim 1.5-2.0~\%$ of the Eddington accretion rate $(\dot M_{Edd})$. The model fitted intermediate shock compression ratio gives an indication of the presence of j…
We present the lightcurves, spectra, and hardness-intensity diagram (HID) of the high mass X-ray binary V0332+53 using Fermi/GBM, MAXI, Swift/BAT, and INTEGRAL through its 2015 Type II outburst. We observe characteristic features in the X-ray emission (2-50 keV) due to periastron passages, the dynamical timescale of the accretion disc, and changes within the accretion column between a radiation-dominated flow and a flow dominated by Coulomb interactions. Based on the HID and the light curves, the critical luminosity is observed to decrease by ~5-7 percent during the outburst, signaling a decre…

We investigate the temporal evolution of an axisymmetric magnetosphere around a rapidly rotating, stellar-mass black hole, applying a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation scheme. Adopting a homogeneous pair production, and assuming that the mass accretion rate is much less than the Eddington limit, we find that the black hole's rotational energy is preferentially extracted from the middle latitudes, and that this outward energy flux exhibits an enhancement that lasts approximately 160 dynamical time scales. It is demonstrated that the magnetohydrodynamic approximations cannot be justifi…
We study the effects of large scale magnetic fields on the dynamics of charged particles near a rotating black hole. We consider a scenario in which the initially neutral particles on geodesic orbits in the equatorial plane become ionized, and hence they are destabilized by the charging process. Fraction of charged particles are then accelerated out of the equatorial plane and then follow jet like trajectories with relativistic velocities. We explore non axisymmetric systems in which the magnetic field is inclined with respect to the black hole spin. We study the system numerically in order to…
A wind nebula, generating extended X-ray emission, was recently detected surrounding Swift J1834.9-0846. This is the first magnetar for which such a wind nebula was found. Here, we investigate whether there is a plausible scenario where the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) can be sustained without the need of advocating for additional sources of energy other than rotational. We do this by using a detailed radiative and dynamical code that studies the evolution of the nebula and its particle population in time. We find that such a scenario indeed exists: Swift J1834.9-0846's nebula can be explained as …

We observed NGC 1624-2, the O-type star with the largest known magnetic field Bp~20 kG), in X-rays with the ACIS-S camera onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Our two observations were obtained at the minimum and maximum of the periodic Halpha emission cycle, corresponding to the rotational phases where the magnetic field is the closest to equator-on and pole-on, respectively. With these observations, we aim to characterise the star's magnetosphere via the X-ray emission produced by magnetically confined wind shocks. Our main findings are: (i) The observed spectrum of NGC 1624-2 is hard, sim…
The interaction of black holes with ambient magnetic fields is important for a variety of highly energetic astrophysical phenomena. We study this interaction within the force-free approximation in which a tenuous plasma is assumed to have zero inertia. Blandford and Znajek (BZ) used this approach to demonstrate the conversion of some of the black hole's energy into electromagnetic Poynting flux in stationary and axisymmetric single black hole systems. We adopt this approach and extend it to examine asymmetric and, most importantly, dynamical systems by implementing the fully nonlinear field eq…
The absorption of a high-energy photon from the external cosmic gamma-ray background in the inner neutron star magnetosphere triggers the generation of a secondary electron-positron plasma and gives rise to a lightning - a lengthening and simultaneously expanding plasma tube. It propagates along magnetic fields lines with a velocity close to the speed of light. The high electron-positron plasma generation rate leads to dynamical screening of the longitudinal electric field that is provided not by charge separation but by electric current growth in the lightning. The lightning radius is compara…
The unusual transient Swift J1644+57 likely resulted from a collimated relativistic jet powered by accretion onto a massive black hole (BH) following the tidal disruption (TD) of a star. Several mysteries cloud the interpretation of this event: (1) extreme flaring and `plateau' shape of the X-ray/gamma-ray light curve during the first 10 days after the gamma-ray trigger; (2) unexpected rebrightening of the forward shock radio emission months after trigger; (3) no obvious evidence for jet precession, despite misalignment typically expected between the angular momentum of the accretion disk and …
