We study the effects of large scale magnetic fields on the dynamics of charged particles near a rotating black hole. We consider a scenario in which the initially neutral particles on geodesic orbits in the equatorial plane become ionized, and hence they are destabilized by the charging process. Fraction of charged particles are then accelerated out of the equatorial plane and then follow jet like trajectories with relativistic velocities. We explore non axisymmetric systems in which the magnetic field is inclined with respect to the black hole spin. We study the system numerically in order to locate the zones of escaping trajectories and compute the terminal escape velocity. By breaking the axial symmetry we notice increasing fraction of unbound orbits which allow for acceleration to ultrarelativistic velocities.
An oblique pulsar magnetosphere with a plasma conductivity is studied by using a pseudo-spectral method. In the pseudo-spectral method, the time-dependent Maxwell equations are solved, both electric and magnetic fields are expanded in terms of the vector spherical harmonic (VSH) functions in spherical geometry and the divergencelessness of magnetic field is analytically enforced by a projection method. The pulsar magnetospheres in infinite (i. e., force-free approximation) and finite conductivities are simulated and a family of solutions that smoothly transition from the Deutsch vacuum solutio…
Dynamics of charged matter in the oblique black hole magnetosphere is investigated. In particular, we adopt a model consisting of a rotating black hole embedded in the external large-scale magnetic field that is inclined arbitrarily with respect to the rotation axis. Breaking the axial symmetry appears to have profound consequences regarding the dynamics of particles and it also poses some methodological difficulties. In this contribution we discuss the applicability of the method of effective potential for the non-axisymmetric model and show that it may only be applied in the appropriate refe…
We present first-principles relativistic particle-in-cell simulations of the oblique pulsar magnetosphere with pair formation. The magnetosphere starts to form with particles extracted from the surface of the neutron star. These particles are accelerated by surface electric fields and emit photons capable of producing electron-positron pairs. We inject secondary pairs at locations of primary energetic particles, whose energy exceeds the threshold for pair formation. We find solutions that are close to the ideal force-free magnetosphere, with the Y-point and current sheet. Solutions with obliqu…
Pulsar magnetospheres are filled with relativistic pairs copiously emitting photons detected from the radio wavelengths up to high and very high energies, in the GeV and sometimes in the TeV range. Efficient particle acceleration converts the stellar rotational kinetic energy into radio, X-ray and gamma-ray photons. Force-free magnetospheres, being dissipationless, cannot operate this conversion. Some non ideal plasma effects must set in within the magnetosphere. In this paper, we compute numerical solutions of pulsar radiative magnetospheres in the radiation reaction limit, where radiation fu…
We perform global particle-in-cell simulations of pulsar magnetospheres including pair production, ion extraction from the surface, frame dragging corrections, and high energy photon emission and propagation. In the case of oblique rotators, effects of general relativity increase the fraction of open field lines which support active pair discharge. We find that the plasma density and particle energy flux in the pulsar wind are highly non-uniform with latitude. Significant fraction of the outgoing particle energy flux is carried by energetic ions, which are extracted from the stellar surface. T…
The current state of the art in pulsar magnetosphere modeling assumes the force-free limit of magnetospheric plasma. This limit retains only partial information about plasma velocity and neglects plasma inertia and temperature. We carried out time-dependent 3D relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of oblique pulsar magnetospheres that improve upon force-free by retaining the full plasma velocity information and capturing plasma heating in strong current layers. We find rather low levels of magnetospheric dissipation, with less than 10% of pulsar spindown energy dissipated within a…
Strong gravity and magnetic fields are key ingredients that power processes of accretion and ejection near compact objects. While the particular mechanisms that operate here are still discussed, it seems that the presence of an ordered magnetic field is crucial for the acceleration and collimation of relativistic jets of electrically charged particles on superhorizon length scales. In this context, we further study the effect of a large-scale magnetic field on the dynamics of charged particles near a rotating black hole. We consider a scenario in which the initially neutral particles on regula…
The mechanism by which the radiation received from obliquely rotating neutron stars is generated remains an open question half a century after the discovery of pulsars. In contrast, considerable progress has recently been made in determining the structure of the magnetosphere that surrounds these objects: numerical computations based on the force-free, magnetohydrodynamic and particle-in-cell formalisms have now established that the magnetosphere of an oblique rotator entails a current sheet outside its light cylinder whose rotating distribution pattern moves with linear speeds exceeding the s…
Recently, it was claimed that accretion of electric charge by a black hole rotating in an aligned external magnetic field results in a "dead" vacuum magnetosphere, where the electric field is totally screened, no vacuum breakdown is possible, and the Blandford-Znajek mechanism cannot operate King & Pringle (2021). Here we study in details the properties of the Wald(1974) solution for electrically charged black holes discussed in that paper. Our results show that the claim is erroneous as in the solution with the critical charge $q_0=2aB_0$ there exists a drop of electrostatic potential along a…
While the motion of particles near a rotating, electrically-neutral (Kerr), and charged (Kerr--Newman) black hole is always strictly regular, a perturbation in the gravitational or the electromagnetic field generally leads to chaos. The transition from regular to chaotic dynamics is relatively gradual if the system preserves axial symmetry, whereas non-axisymmetry induces chaos more efficiently. Here we study the development of chaos in an oblique (electro-vacuum) magnetosphere of a magnetized black hole. Besides the strong gravity of the massive source represented by the Kerr metric we consid…
In this paper, we use previously developed exact solutions to present some of the curious features of a force-free magnetosphere in a Kerr background. More precisely, we obtain a hitherto unseen timelike current in the force-free magnetosphere that does not flow along a geodesic. The electromagnetic field in this case happens to be magnetically dominated. This too is a feature that has entered the literature for the first time. Changing the sign of a single parameter in our solutions generates a spacelike current that creates an electromagnetic field that is electrically dominated.
We study charged-fluid toroidal structures surrounding a non-rotating charged black hole immersed in a large-scale, asymptotically uniform magnetic field. In continuation of our former study on electrically charged matter in approximation of zero conductivity, we demonstrate existence of orbiting structures in permanent rigid rotation in the equatorial plane, and charged clouds hovering near the symmetry axis. We constrain the range of parameters that allow stable configurations and derive the geometrical shape of equi-pressure surfaces. Our simplified analytical study suggests that these regi…
Cosmic black holes can act as agents of particle acceleration. We study properties of a system consisting of a rotating black hole immersed in a large-scale organized magnetic field. Electrically charged particles in the immediate neighborhood of the horizon are influenced by strong gravity acting together with magnetic and induced electric components. We relax several constraints which were often imposed in previous works: the magnetic field does not have to share a common symmetry axis with the spin of the black hole but they can be inclined with respect to each other, thus violating the axi…
Magnetars are highly magnetized neutron stars. For a slowly rotating magnetar, the strong magnetic field deforms the star, making it axisymmetric with respect to the magnetic axis (the body symmetry axis). In magnetars, the rotation axis is tilted to the magnetic axis, and we have an oblique rotator. General relativistic treatment of the obliquely rotating magnetar gives rise to frame-dragging velocities both in the azimuthal and polar direction. Solving the Einstein equation up to first-order perturbation in rotation and second-order perturbation in the magnetic field, we calculate the geodes…
Following the early paper of Goldreich & Julian (1969), polar-cap models have usually assumed that the closed sector of a pulsar magnetosphere corotates with the neutron star. Recent work by Melrose & Yuen has been a reminder that in an oblique rotator, the induction field arising from the time-varying magnetic flux density cannot be completely screened. The principal consequence is that the plasma does not corotate with the star. Here it is shown that the physics of the polar cap is not changed at the altitudes of the radio emission source. But the presence of a plasma drift velocity in the c…
We reconsider pulsar electrodynamics for an obliquely rotating pulsar, and propose a way of synthesizing the vacuum dipole model (VDM) and the rotating magnetosphere model (RMM). We first modify the VDM by assuming that the parallel component of the inductive electric field is screened by charges. We refer to the resulting model as the minimal model. We calculate the screening charge density in the minimal model and compare it with the (Goldreich-Julian) charge density in the RMM. We identify the plasma velocity in the minimal model as the electric drift velocity due to the perpendicular compo…
