The interaction of black holes with ambient magnetic fields is important for a variety of highly energetic astrophysical phenomena. We study this interaction within the force-free approximation in which a tenuous plasma is assumed to have zero inertia. Blandford and Znajek (BZ) used this approach to demonstrate the conversion of some of the black hole's energy into electromagnetic Poynting flux in stationary and axisymmetric single black hole systems. We adopt this approach and extend it to examine asymmetric and, most importantly, dynamical systems by implementing the fully nonlinear field equations of general relativity coupled to Maxwell's equations. For single black holes, we study in particular the dependence of the Poynting flux and show that, even for misalignments between the black hole spin and the direction of the asymptotic magnetic field, a Poynting flux is generated with a luminosity dependent on such misalignment. For binary black hole systems, we show both in the head-on and orbiting cases that the moving black holes generate a Poynting flux.
In this paper, we use previously developed exact solutions to present some of the curious features of a force-free magnetosphere in a Kerr background. More precisely, we obtain a hitherto unseen timelike current in the force-free magnetosphere that does not flow along a geodesic. The electromagnetic field in this case happens to be magnetically dominated. This too is a feature that has entered the literature for the first time. Changing the sign of a single parameter in our solutions generates a spacelike current that creates an electromagnetic field that is electrically dominated.
Quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects may be included in physical processes of magnetar and pulsar magnetospheres with strong magnetic fields. Involving the quantum corrections, the Maxwell electrodynamics is modified to non-linear electrodynamics. In this work, we study the force-free magnetosphere in non-linear electrodynamics in a general framework. The pulsar equation describing a steady and axisymmetric magnetosphere is derived, which now admits solutions with corrections. We derive the first-order non-linear corrections to the near-zone dipole magnetosphere in some popular non-linear eff…
Plasma magnetosphere surrounding rotating magnetized neutron star in the braneworld has been studied. For the simplicity of calculations Goldreich-Julian charge density is analyzed for the aligned neutron star with zero inclination between magnetic field and rotation axis. From the system of Maxwell equations in spacetime of slowly rotating star in braneworld, second-order differential equation for electrostatic potential is derived. Analytical solution of this equation indicates the general relativistic modification of an accelerating electric field and charge density along the open field lin…
In this paper we examine the wave properties of hot plasma living in Schwarzschild magnetosphere. The 3+1 GRMHD perturbation equations are formulated for this scenario. These equations are Fourier analyzed and then solved numerically to obtain the dispersion relations for non-rotating, rotating non-magnetized and rotating magnetized plasma. The wave vector is evaluated which is used to calculate refractive index. These quantities are shown in graphs which are helpful to discuss the dispersive properties of the medium near the event horizon.
Magnetar magnetospheres gradually become twisted due to shearing by footpoint motion. The axisymmetric solutions for the force-free field with a power-law current model are calculated by taking into account general relativistic effects. Here we show how the magnetic energy and helicity are accumulated along a sequence of equilibria. In a strongly twisted case, a magnetic flux rope, in which a large amount of toroidal field is confined, detaches in the vicinity of the star. It is found this kind of magnetic field line structure is easily produced due to strong relativistic effects compared with…
We re-formulate the 3+1 GRMHD equations for the Schwarzschild black hole in a Veselago medium. Linear perturbation in rotating (non-magnetized and magnetized) plasma is introduced and their Fourier analysis is considered. We discuss wave properties with the help of wave vector, refractive index and change in refractive index in the form of graphs. It is concluded that some waves move away from the event horizon in this unusual medium. We conclude that for the rotating non-magnetized plasma, our results confirm the presence of Veselago medium while the rotating magnetized plasma does not provid…
Based on the Lagrangian of the steady axisymmetric force-free magnetosphere (FFM) equation around Kerr black holes(KBHs), we find that the FFM equation can be rewritten in a new form as $f_{,rr} / (1-μ^{2}) + f_{,μμ} / Δ+ K(f(r,μ),r,μ) = 0$, where $μ= -\cosθ$. By coordinate transformation, the form of the above equation can be given by $s_{,yy} + s_{,zz} + D(s(y,z),y,z) = 0$. Based on the form, we prove finally that the Meissner effect is not possessed by a KBH-FFM with the condition where $dω/d A_ϕ \leqslant 0$ and $H_ϕ(dH_ϕ/dA_ϕ) \geqslant 0$, here $A_ϕ$ is the $ϕ$ component of the vector po…
The no-hair theorem of general relativity states that isolated black holes are characterized by three parameters: mass, spin, and charge. In this Letter we consider Kerr black holes endowed with highly magnetized plasma-filled magnetospheres. Using general relativistic kinetic plasma and resistive magnetohydrodynamics simulations, we show that a dipole magnetic field on the event horizon opens into a split-monopole and reconnects in a plasmoid-unstable current-sheet. The no-hair theorem is satisfied, in the sense that all components of the stress-energy tensor decay exponentially in time. We m…
We consider force-free magnetospheres around the extreme Kerr black hole. In this case there is no known exact analytic solution to force free electrodynamics which is stationary, axisymmetric and magnetically-dominated. However, any stationary, axisymmetric and regular force-free magnetosphere in extreme Kerr black hole approaches the same attractor solution in the near-horizon extreme Kerr (NHEK) limit with null electromagnetic field. We show that by moving away from the attractor solution in the NHEK region, one finds magnetically-dominated solutions in the extreme Kerr black hole with fini…
We propose a new approach to find magnetically-dominated force-free magnetospheres around highly spinning black holes, relevant for models of astrophysical jets. Employing the near-horizon extreme Kerr (NHEK) limit of the Kerr black hole, any stationary, axisymmetric and regular force-free magnetosphere reduces to the same attractor solution in the NHEK limit with null electromagnetic field strength. We use this attractor solution as the universal starting point for perturbing away from the NHEK region in the extreme Kerr spacetime. We demonstrate that by going to second order in perturbation …
The state of a static spherically symmetric relativistic axionically active multi-component plasma in the gravitational, magnetic and electric fields of an axionic dyon is studied in the framework of the Einstein - Maxwell - Boltzmann - axion theory. We assume that the equations of axion electrodynamics, the covariant relativistic kinetic equations, and the equation for the axion field with modified Higgs-type potential are nonlinearly coupled; the gravitational field in the dyon exterior is assumed to be fixed and to be of the Reissner-Nordström type. We introduce the extended Lorentz force, …
This work studies jet-like electromagnetic configurations surrounding a slowly-spinning black-hole immersed in a uniformly magnetized force-free plasma. In the first part of this work, we present a family of stationary solutions that are jet-capable. While these solutions all satisfy the force-free equations and the appropriate boundary conditions, our numerical experiments show a unique relaxed state starting from different initial data, and so one member of the family is likely preferred over the others. In the second part of this work, we analyze the perturbations of this family of jet-like…
We study force-free magnetospheres in the Blandford-Znajek process from rapidly rotating black holes by adopting the near-horizon geometry of near-extreme Kerr black holes (near-NHEK). It is shown that the Znajek regularity condition on the horizon can be directly derived from the resulting stream equation. In terms of the condition, we split the full stream equation into two separate equations. Approximate solutions around the rotation axis are derived. They are found to be consistent with previous solutions obtained in the asymptotic region. The solutions indicate energy and angular-momentum…
We analyze the dynamical evolution of a perturbed force-free magnetosphere of a rotating black hole, which is described by the Blandford-Znajek solution in the stationary limit. We find that the electromagnetic field perturbations can be classified into two categories: "trapped modes" and "traveling waves". The trapped modes are analogous to the vacuum (without plasma) electromagnetic quasinormal modes in rotating black hole spacetimes, but with different eigenfrequencies and wave functions, due to their coupling with the background electromagnetic field and current. The traveling waves propag…
The structural properties of geodesic currents in an ambient Kerr background is studied from an analytical point of view. The geodesics in the congruence correspond to charged particles that carry energy and angular momentum from the black hole through the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. It is shown that the resulting magnetosphere naturally satisfies the Znajek regularity condition. Particular attention is paid here to the energy extracted by matter currents rather than by electromagnetic Poynting fluxes.
Force-free magnetospheres are of particular interest due to their role in energy extraction from Kerr black holes via the Blandford-Znajek process. Recently, a class of exact analytic solutions has been found with null currents [1,2]. In this paper, we elaborate some constraints on various force-free magnetosphere solutions with non-null currents, utilizing the Newman-Penrose electromagnetic scalars to categorize a range of different cases. We perform a thorough search for stationary and axisymmetric (SAS) solutions, and find that putative SAS solutions within the categories considered generic…
We discuss stationary and axisymmetric trans-magnetosonic outflows in the magnetosphere of a rotating black hole (BH). Ejected plasma from the plasma source located near the BH is accelerated far away to form a relativistic jet. In this study, the plasma acceleration efficiency and conversion of fluid energy from electromagnetic energy are considered by employing the trans-fast magnetosonic flow solution derived by Takahashi & Tomimatsu (2008). Considering the parameter dependence of magnetohydrodynamical flows, we search for the parameters of the trans-magnetosonic outflow solution to the rec…
The ability of a plasma surrounding spinning black holes to extract rotational energy and power energetic emissions has been recognized as a key astrophysical phenomenon. Important insights into the nature of this process are obtained through the analysis of the interplay between a force-free magnetosphere and the black hole. This task involves solving a complicated system of equations, often requiring complex numerical simulations. Recent analytical attempts at tackling this problem have exploited the fact that the near horizon region of extreme Kerr (NHEK) is endowed with an enhanced symmetr…
A theory of magnetized pair plasma is obtained by the method of bosonization on the lowest Landau level. Force-free electrodynamics emerges in the strong-field limit. Potential applications to neutron star magnetospheres are suggested.
The Blandford-Znajek constraint equation for a stationary, axisymmetric black-hole force-free magnetosphere is cast in a 3+1 absolute space and time formulation, following Komissarov (2004). We derive an analytic solution for fields and currents to the constraint equation in the far-field limit that satisfies the Znajek condition at the event horizon. This solution generalizes the Blandford-Znajek monopole solution for a slowly rotating black hole to black holes with arbitrary angular momentum. Energy and angular momentum extraction through this solution occurs mostly along the equatorial plan…
The kinematic evolution of axisymmetric magnetic fields in rotating magnetospheres of relativistic compact objects is analytically studied, based on relativistic Ohm's law in stationary axisymmetric geometry. By neglecting the poloidal flows of plasma in simplified magnetospheric models, we discuss self-excited dynamos due to the frame-dragging effect (originally pointed out by Khanna & Camenzind), and we propose alternative processes to generate axisymmetric magnetic fields against ohmic dissipation. The first process (which may be called induced excitation) is caused by the help of a backgro…
The magnetosphere structure of a magnetar is considered in the context of a theory of gravity with dynamical torsion field beyond the standard General Relativity (GR). To this end, the axially symmetric version of the Grad-Shafranov equation (GSE) is obtained in this theoretical framework. The resulting GSE solution in the case of the magnetosphere corresponds to a stream function containing also a pseudoscalar part. This function solution under axisymmetry presents a complex character that (as in the quantum field theoretical case) could be associated with an axidilaton field. Magnetar-pulsar…
