Using the logarithmic superfluid model of physical vacuum, one can formulate a quantum theory, which successfully recovers Einstein's theory of relativity in low-momenta limit, but otherwise has different foundations and predictions. We present an analytical example of the dispersion relation and argue that it should have a Landau "roton" form which ensures the suppression of dissipative fluctuations. We show that at small momenta, a dispersion relation becomes relativistic with small deformations, such that a photon acquires effective mass, but a much more complex picture arises at large momenta.
We analyze the vacuum structure of N=1/2 chiral supersymmetric theories in deformed superspace. In particular we study O'Raifeartaigh models with C-deformed superpotentials and canonical and non-canonical deformed Kahler potentials. We find conditions under which the vacuum configurations are affected by the deformations.
We introduce a generalization of the usual vacuum energy, called `deformed vacuum energy', which yields anisotropic pressure whilst preserving zero inertial mass density. It couples to the shear scalar in a unique way, such that they together emulate the canonical scalar field with an arbitrary potential. This opens up a new avenue by reconsidering cosmologies based on canonical scalar fields, along with a bonus that the kinetic term of the scalar field is replaced by an observable, the shear scalar. We further elaborate the aspects of this approach in the context of dark energy.
We study non-supersymmetric truncations of $ω$-deformed ${\cal N}=8$ gauged supergravity that retain a $U(1)$ gauge field and three scalars, of which two are neutral and one charged. We construct dyonic domain-wall and black hole solutions with AdS$_4$ boundary conditions when only one (neutral) scalar is non-vanishing, and examine their behavior as the magnetic field and temperature of the system are varied. In the infrared the domain-wall solutions approach either dyonic AdS$_2 \times \mathbb{R}^2$ or else Lifshitz-like, hyperscaling violating geometries. The scaling exponents of the latter …
In this paper, we investigate how a uniformly accelerated detector responds to vacuum state of a Dirac field in the $κ$-Minkowski space-time. Starting from $κ$-deformed Dirac theory, which is invariant under $κ$-Poincare algebra, we derive $κ$-deformed Wightmann function for Dirac field, which is valid up to first order in the deformation parameter $a$. Using this, we calculate the response function of the uniformly accelerated detector, which is coupled to massless Dirac field in $κ$-spacetime. From this, we obtain the modification to Unruh effect for the $κ$-deformed Dirac field, valid up to…
We investigate the string field theory around the tachyon vacuum. A pure gauge form of the solution is constructed at the tachyon vacuum. For a special choice of the gauge function for the pure gauge form, marginal deformation from the tachyon vacuum is allowed due to the nontrivial roles of Schnabl's analytic vacuum solution. We obtain an exact rolling tachyon solution which describes the late time behaviors of D-brane decay.
Recently, questions have been raised about the role of Lorentz invariance in false vacuum decay. It has been argued that infinities may arise in an integration over Lorentz-boosted final states. This suggestion motivates a Minkowski-space analysis of the decay rate. We attempt to illuminate features of the amplitude computation, and argue that the total rate including excitations is both finite and Lorentz invariant.
We consider bosonic open string field theory in marginally deformed backgrounds, which is obtained by expanding the string field around the identity-based solutions associated with marginal deformations. We find a new set of string fields which satisfies the KBc algebra, but the nilpotent kinetic operator is that of the theory expanded around the identity-based marginal solution. By use of these string fields, we construct the tachyon vaccum solution in marginally deformed backgrounds. The vacuum energy density is equivalent to that of the tachyon vacuum without marginal deformations. The gaug…
We study the winding number susceptibility < I^2> in a superfluid system and the topological susceptibility < Q^2> in QCD. We argue that both correlation functions exhibit similar structures, including the generation of the contact terms. We discuss the nature of the contact term in superfluid system and argue that it has exactly the same origin as in QCD, and it is related to the long distance physics which cannot be associated with conventional microscopical degrees of freedom such as phonons and rotons. We emphasize that the conceptual similarities between superfluid system and QCD may lead…
Recently it was shown that vacuum in a background of strong enough magnetic field becomes an electromagnetic superconductor due to interplay between strong and electromagnetic forces. The superconducting ground state of the vacuum is associated with a spontaneous emergence of quark-antiquark condensates which carry quantum numbers of charged rho mesons. The rho-meson condensate is an inhomogeneous structure made of the so-called rho vortices, which are parallel to the magnetic field axis. The condensation of the charged rho mesons induces a (much weaker) superfluid-like condensate with quantum…
We compute the one-loop quantum corrections to the kink energies of the sinh-deformed $ϕ^{4}$ and $φ^{6}$ models in one space and one time dimensions. These models are constructed from the well-known polynomial $ϕ^{4}$ and $φ^{6}$ models by a deformation procedure. We also compute the vacuum polarization energy to the non-polynomial function $U(ϕ)=\frac{1}{4}(1-\sinh^{2}ϕ)^{2}$. This potential approaches the $ϕ^{4}$ model in the limit of small values of the scalar function. These energies are extracted from scattering data for fluctuations about the kink solutions. We show that for certain top…
In a quantum field with spacetime invariance governed by the Poincare algebra the one-loop effective action is equal to the sum of zero modes frequencies, which is the vacuum energy of the field. The first Casimir invariant of the Poincare algebra provides the proper time Hamiltonian in Schwinger's proper time representation of the effective action. We consider here a massive neutral scalar field with spacetime invariance governed by the so called kappa-deformed Poincare algebra. We show here that if in the kappa-deformed theory the first Casimir invariant of the algebra is also used as the pr…
We consider the problem of calculating the Casimir energies in the winding sectors of Fateev's SS-model, which is an integrable two-parameter deformation of the O(4) non-linear sigma model in two dimensions. This problem lies beyond the scope of all traditional methods of integrable quantum field theory including the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and non-linear integral equations. Here we propose a solution based on a remarkable correspondence between classical and quantum integrable systems and express the winding energies in terms of certain solutions of the classical sinh-Gordon equation.
Superfluid phases of 3He are quantuim liquids with the interacting fermionic and bosonic fields. In many respects they can simulate the interacting quantum fields in the phyiscal vacuum. One can observe analogs of such phenomena as axial anomaly, vacuum polarization, zero-charge effect, fermionic charge of the vacuum, baryogenesis, ergoregion, vacuum instability, etc. We discuss some topics on example of several linear defects in 3He-A: (1) disgyration, which simulates the extremely massive cosmic string: (2) singular vortex, which is analogous to the spinning cosmic string; and (3) continuous…
We study a number of different ingredients related to the $θ$ dependence, metastable excited vacuum states and other related subjects using a simplified version of QCD, the so-called "deformed QCD". This model is a weakly coupled gauge theory, which however preserves all the relevant essential elements allowing us to study hard and nontrivial features which are known to be present in real strongly coupled QCD. Our main focus in this work is to test the ideas related to the metastable vacuum states (which are known to be present in strongly coupled QCD in large $N$ limit) in a theoretically con…
We investigate numerical solutions of bosonic open string field theory in some marginally deformed backgrounds, which are obtained by expanding the action around an identity-based marginal solution with one parameter. We construct numerical solutions in the Siegel gauge and the Landau gauge corresponding to the tachyon vacuum. Their vacuum energy approximately cancels the D-brane tension for larger intervals of the parameter with increasing truncation level. The result is consistent with the previous expectation that the identity-based marginal solution has vanishing energy regardless of the v…
We investigate the Casimir effect at finite temperature for a charged scalar field in the presence of an external uniform and constant magnetic field, perpendicular to the Casimir plates. We have used a boundary condition characterized by a deformation parameter $θ$; for $θ=0$ we have a periodic condition and for $θ=π$, an antiperiodic one, for intermediate values, we have a deformation. The temperature was introduced using the imaginary time formalism and both the lagrangian and free energy were obtained from Schwinger proper time method for computing the effective action. We also computed th…
We find the classical supersymmetric vacuum states of a class of N = 1* field theories obtained by mass deforming superconformal models with simple gauge groups and N = 4 or N =2 supersymmetry. In particular, new classical vacuum states for mass-deformed N = 4 models with Sp(2N) and SO(N) gauge symmetry are found. We also derive the classical vacua for various mass-deformed N=2 models with Sp(2N) and SU(N) gauge groups and antisymmetric (and symmetric) hypermultiplets. We suggest interpretations of the mass-deformed vacua in terms of three-branes expanded into five-brane configurations.
The friction force on the moving interface between two different vacuum states of superfluid 3He is considered at low temperature. Since the dominating mechanism of the friction is the Andreev reflection of the massless "relativistic" fermions, which live on the A-phase side of the interface, the results are similar to that for the perfectly reflecting mirror moving in the quantum vacuum.
Superfluid 3He-A and high-temperature superconductors both have gapless fermionic quasiparticles with the "relativistic" spectrum close to the gap nodes. The interaction of these "relaitivistic" fermions with bosonic collective modes of the order parameter is described by the quantum field theory, which results in a close connection with particle physics. Many phenomena in high-energy physics and cosmology can thus be simulated in superfluid phases of 3He and in unconventional superconductors. This includes axial anomaly, vacuum polarization, zero-charge effect, fermionic charge of the vacuum,…
We develop a theory of dark matter based on a previously proposed picture, in which a complex vacuum scalar field makes the universe a superfluid, with the energy density of the superfluid giving rise to dark energy, and variations from vacuum density giving rise to dark matter. We formulate a nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation to describe the superfluid, treating galaxies as external sources. We study the response of the superfluid to the galaxies, in particular, the emergence of the dark-matter galactic halo, contortions during galaxy collisions, and the creation of vortices due to galactic rot…
In this paper we study the Dirac field theory interacting with external gravitation field, described with tetrad of the form $e_b^μ(x)=\varepsilon(δ_b^μ+ω_{ba}^μx^a)$, where $\varepsilon=1$ for $μ=0$ and $\varepsilon=i$ for $μ=1,2,3.$ The probability density of the vacuum-vacuum pair creation is given. In particular case of vanishing electromagnetic fields, we point out how this deformation modify the amplitude transition. The corresponding Dirac equation is solved.
M(atrix) theory is known to be mass-deformed in the pp-wave background and still retains all 16 dynamical supersymmetries. We consider generalization of such deformations on super Yang-Mills quantum mechanics (SYQM) with less supersymmetry. In particular this includes N=8 U(N) SYQM with a single adjoint and any number of fundamental hypermultiplets, which is a pp-wave deformation of DLCQ matrix theory of fivebranes. With k >= 1 fivebranes, we show that a rich vacuum structure exists, with many continuous family of solutions that preserve all dynamical supersymmetries. The vacuum moduli space c…
We present a general and systematic treatment of multi-trace deformations in the AdS/CFT correspondence in the large N limit, pointing out and clarifying subtleties relating to the formulation of the boundary value problem on a conformal boundary. We then apply this method to study multi-trace deformations in the presence of a scalar VEV, which requires the coupling to gravity to be taken into account. We show that supergravity solutions subject to `mixed' boundary conditions are in one-to-one correspondence with critical points of the holographic effective action of the dual theory in the pre…
We study small fluctuations around a BPS three-sphere vacuum solution of mass deformed BLG theory. We realize the BLG theory by a Nambu bracket and find a maximally supersymmetric lagrangian for the fluctuation fields corresponding to a single M5 brane on $\mb{R}^{1,2}\times S^3$.
We present a detailed account and extension of our claim in arXiv:1610.01490. We test the gauge/gravity duality between the ${\cal N} = 6$ mass-deformed ABJM theory with U$_k(N)\times$U$_{-k}(N)$ gauge symmetry and the 11-dimensional supergravity on LLM geometries with SO(4)/${\mathbb Z}_k$ $\times$SO(4)/${\mathbb Z}_k$ isometry, in the large $N$ limit. Our analysis is based on the evaluation of vacuum expectation values of chiral primary operators from the supersymmetric vacua of mass-deformed ABJM theory and from the implementation of Kaluza-Klein holography to the LLM geometries. We focus o…
We initiate the investigation of the zero temperature holographic superfluids with two competing orders, where besides the vacuum phase, two one band superfluid phases, the coexistent superfluid phase has also been found in the AdS soliton background for the first time. We construct the complete phase diagram in the $e-μ$ plane by numerics, which is consistent with our qualitative analysis. Furthermore, we calculate the corresponding optical conductivity and sound speed by the linear response theory. The onset of pole of optical conductivity at $ω=0$ indicates that the spontaneous breaking pha…
We analyse the noncommutative U(1) sigma model, which arises from the vacuum dynamics of the noncommutative charged tachyonic field. The sector of ``spherically symmetric'' excitations of the model is equivalent to a chain of rotators. Classical solutions for this model are found, which are static and ``spherically symmetric'' in noncommutative spatial dimensions. The limit of small noncommutativity reveals the presence of Polyakov vortices in the model. A generalisation of the model to q-deformed space, which may serve as a regularisation of the non-deformed model is also considered.
We explore the effect of using two-dimensional matter-wave vortices to confine an ensemble of bosonic quantum impurities. This is modelled theoretically using a mass-imbalanced homogeneous two component Gross-Pitaevskii equation where each component has independent atom numbers and equal atomic masses. By changing the mass imbalance of our system we find the shape of the vortices are deformed even at modest imbalances, leading to barrel shaped vortices; which we quantify using a multi-component variational approach. The energy of impurity carrying vortex pairs are computed, revealing a mass-de…
In this work the Vacuum Energy Density Problem or Dark Energy Problem is studied on the basis of the earlier results by the author within the scope of the Holographic Principle. It is demonstrated that the previously introduced deformed quantum field theory at a nonuniform lattice in the finite-dimensional hypercube is consistent with the Holographic Principle (Holographic Entropy Bound)in case the condition of the physical system's stability with respect to the gravitational collapse is met, or simply stated, the gravitational stability is constrained. The associated deformation parameter is …
We test the holographic relation between the vacuum expectation values of gauge invariant operators in ${\cal N} = 6$ ${\rm U}_k(N)\times {\rm U}_{-k}(N)$ mass-deformed ABJM theory and the LLM geometries with $\mathbb{Z}_k$ orbifold in 11-dimensional supergravity. To do that, we apply the Kaluza-Klein reduction to construct a 4-dimensional gravity theory and implement the holographic renormalization procedure. We obtain an exact holographic relation for the vacuum expectation values of the chiral primary operator with conformal dimension $Δ= 1$, which is given by $\langle {\cal O}^{(Δ=1)}\rang…
We consider a deformed superspace in which the coordinates θdo not anticommute, but satisfy a Clifford algebra. We present results on the properties of N=1/2 supersymmetric theories of chiral superfields in deformed superspace, taking the Wess-Zumino model as the prototype. We prove new (non)renormalization theorems: the F-term is radiatively corrected and becomes indistinguishable from the D-term, while the Fbar-term is not renormalized. Supersymmetric vacua are critical points of the antiholomorphic superpotential. The vacuum energy is zero to all orders in perturbation theory. We illustrate…
We study the propagation of quantum fields on $κ$-Minkowsi spacetime. Starting from the non-commutative partition function for a free field written in momentum space we derive the Feynman propagator and analyze the non-trivial singularity structure determined by the group manifold geometry of momentum space. The additional contributions due to such singularity structure result in a deformed field propagation which can be alternatively described in terms of an ordinary field propagation determined by a source with a blurred spacetime profile. We show that the $κ$-deformed Feynman propagator can…
Many direct parallels connect superfluid 3He with the field theories describing the physical vacuum, gauge fields and elementary fermions. Superfluid $^3$He exhibits a variety of topological defects which can be detected with single-defect sensitivity. Modern scenarios of defect-mediated baryogenesis can be simulated by the interaction of the 3He vortices and domain walls with fermionic quasiparticles. Formation of defects in a symmetry-breaking phase transition in the early Universe, which could be responsible for large-scale structure formation and for microwave-background anisotropy, also m…
We present a theory of quantized radiation fields described in terms of q-deformed harmonic oscillators. The creation and annihilation operators satisfy deformed commutation relations and the Fock space of states is constructed in this formalism in terms of basic numbers familiar from the theory of quantum groups. Expressions for the Hamiltonian and momentum arising from deformed Heisenberg relations are obtained and their consequences investigated. The energy momentum properties of the vacuum state are studied. The commutation relation for the fields is shown to involve polarization sums more…
From the general assumption that gravity originates from the coupling and thermal equilibrium between matter and vacuum, after a derivation of Newton's law of gravitation and an interpretation of the attractive gravity force between two classical objects, we consider the macroscopic quantum gravity effect for particles whose wave packets are delocalized at macroscopic scale. We predict an abnormal repulsive gravity effect in this work. For a sphere full of superfluid helium, it is shown that with a gravimeter placed in this sphere, the sensitivities of the gravity acceleration $Δg/g$ below $10…
We study the local violation of P and CP invariance in heavy ion collisions as observed at RHIC and LHC using a simple "deformed QCD" model. This model is a weakly coupled gauge theory, which however has all the relevant crucial elements allowing us to study difficult and nontrivial questions which are known to be present in real strongly coupled QCD. Essentially, we want to understand the physics of long range order in form of coherent low dimensional vacuum configurations observed in Monte Carlo lattice simulations. Apparently precisely such kind of configurations are responsible for suffici…
