We present and analyze a weak Galerkin finite element method for solving the transport-reaction equation in $d$ space dimensions. This method is highly flexible by allowing the use of discontinuous finite element on general meshes consisting of arbitrary polygon/polyhedra. We derive the \textcolor[rgb]{0.00,0.00,1.00}{$L_2$-error estimate} of $O(h^{k+\frac{1}{2}})$-order for the discrete solution when the $k$th-order polynomials are used for $k\geq 0$. Moreover, for a special class of meshes, we also obtain the \textcolor[rgb]{0.00,0.00,1.00}{optimal error} estimate of $O(h^{k+1})$-order in the $L_2$-norm. A derivative recovery formula is presented to approximate the convection \textcolor[rgb]{1.00,0.00,0.00}{directional derivative} and the corresponding superconvergence estimate is given. Numerical examples on compatible and non-compatible meshes are provided to show the effectiveness of this weak Galerkin method.
In this paper we investigate the numerical approximation of the fractional diffusion, advection, reaction equation on a bounded interval. Recently the explicit form of the solution to this equation was obtained. Using the explicit form of the boundary behavior of the solution and Jacobi polynomials, a Petrov-Galerkin approximation scheme is proposed and analyzed. Numerical experiments are presented which support the theoretical results, and demonstrate the accuracy and optimal convergence of the approximation method.
In this work, we apply a fast and accurate numerical method for solving fractional reaction-diffusion equations in unbounded domains. By using the Fourier-like spectral approach in space, this method can effectively handle the fractional Laplace operator, leading to a fully diagonal representation of the fractional Laplacian. To fully discretize the underlying nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems, we propose to use an accurate time marching scheme based on ETDRK4. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
In this article, using the weighted discrete least-squares, we propose a patch reconstruction finite element space with only one degree of freedom per element. As the approximation space, it is applied to the discontinuous Galerkin methods with the upwind scheme for the steady-state convection-diffusion-reaction problems over polytopic meshes. The optimal error estimates are provided in both diffusion-dominated and convection-dominated regimes. Furthermore, several numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical error estimates, and to well approximate boundary layers and/or inte…
In this paper we investigate the variable coefficient two-sided fractional diffusion, advection, reaction equations on a bounded interval. It is known that the fractional diffusion operator may lose coercivity due to the variable coefficient, which makes both the mathematical and numerical analysis challenging. To resolve this issue, we design appropriate test and trial functions to prove the inf-sup condition of the variable coefficient fractional diffusion, advection, reaction operators in suitable function spaces. Based on this property, we prove the well-posedness and regularity of the sol…

We introduce a local adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The proposed method is based on a coarse grid and iteratively improves the solution's accuracy by solving local elliptic problems in refined subdomains. For purely diffusion problems, we already proved that this scheme converges under minimal regularity assumptions [A. Abdulle and G.Rosilho de Souza, ESAIM: M2AN, 53(4):1269--1303, 2019]. In this paper, we provide an algorithm for the automatic identification of the local elliptic problems' subdomains employing a flux reconstruction strategy…
We analyse the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for two-dimensional singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems. A class of layer-adapted meshes, including Shishkin- and Bakhvalov-type meshes, is discussed within a general framework. Local projections and their approximation properties on anisotropic meshes are used to derive error estimates for energy and "balanced" norms. Here, the energy norm is naturally derived from the bilinear form of LDG formulation and the "balanced" norm is artifically introduced to capture the boundary layer contribution. We establish a uniform converg…

In this article we consider the numerical approximation of the convection-diffusion-reaction equation. One of the main challenges of designing a numerical method for this problem is that boundary layers occurring in the convection-dominated case can lead to non-physical oscillations in the numerical approximation, often referred to as Gibbs phenomena. The idea of this article is to consider the approximation problem as a residual minimization in dual norms in Lq-type Sobolev spaces, with 1 < q < $\infty$. We then apply a non-standard, non-linear PetrovGalerkin discretization, that is applicabl…
Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin projection-based reduced-order models (ROMs) of transient partial differential equations are typically obtained by performing a dimension reduction and projection process that is defined at either the spatially continuous or spatially discrete level. In both cases, it is common to add stabilization to the resulting ROM to increase the stability and accuracy of the method; the addition of stabilization is particularly common for advection-dominated systems when the ROM is under-resolved. While these two approaches can be equivalent in certain settings, differing tec…
We discuss the mathematical modeling and numerical discretization of transport problems on one-dimensional networks. Suitable coupling conditions are derived that guarantee conservation of mass across network junctions and dissipation of a mathematical energy which allows to prove existence of unique solutions. We then consider the space discretization by a hybrid discontinuous Galerkin method which provides a suitable upwind mechanism to handle the transport problem and allows to incorporate the coupling conditions in a natural manner. In addition, the method inherits mass conservation and st…
The tempered fractional diffusion equation could be recognized as the generalization of the classic fractional diffusion equation that the truncation effects are included in the bounded domains. This paper focuses on designing the high order fully discrete local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method based on the generalized alternating numerical fluxes for the tempered fractional diffusion equation. From a practical point of view, the generalized alternating numerical flux which is different from the purely alternating numerical flux has a broader range of applications. We first design an effici…
We propose a hybrid spatial discretization for the radiative transport equation that combines a second-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method and a second-order finite volume (FV) method. The strategy relies on a simple operator splitting that has been used previously to combine different angular discretizations. Unlike standard FV methods with upwind fluxes, the hybrid approach is able to accurately simulate problems in scattering dominated regimes. However, it requires less memory and yields a faster computational time than a uniform DG discretization. In addition, the underlying splitting…
The discrete ordinates discontinuous Galerkin ($S_N$-DG) method is a well-established and practical approach for solving the radiative transport equation. In this paper, we study a low-memory variation of the upwind $S_N$-DG method. The proposed method uses a smaller finite element space that is constructed by coupling spatial unknowns across collocation angles, thereby yielding an approximation with fewer degrees of freedom than the standard method. Like the original $S_N$-DG method, the low memory variation still preserves the asymptotic diffusion limit and maintains the characteristic struc…
We present the analysis for an $hp$ weak Galerkin-FEM for singularly perturbed reaction-convection-diffusion problems in one-dimension. Under the analyticity of the data assumption, we establish robust exponential convergence, when the error is measured in the energy norm, as the degree $p$ of the approximating polynomials is increased. The Spectral Boundary Layer mesh is used, which is the minimal (layer adapted) mesh for such problems. Numerical examples illustrating the theory are also presented.
In this paper we present new stability and optimal error analyses of hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods which do not require elliptic regularity assumptions. To obtain error estimates without elliptic regularity assumptions, we use new inf-sup conditions based on stabilized saddle point structures of HDG methods. We show that this approach can be applied to obtain optimal error estimates of HDG methods for the Poisson equations, the convection-reaction-diffusion equations, the Stokes equations, and the Oseen equations.

We propose a generalized Eulerian-Lagrangian (GEL) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. The method is a generalization of the Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL) DG method for transport problems proposed in [arXiv preprint arXiv: 2002.02930 (2020)], which tracks solution along approximations to characteristics in the DG framework, allowing extra large time stepping size with stability. The newly proposed GEL DG method in this paper is motivated for solving linear hyperbolic systems with variable coefficients, where the velocity field for adjoint problems of the test functions is frozen to constant. In thi…

We analyze families of primal high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for solving degenerate (second-order) elliptic problems. One major trouble regarding this class of PDEs concerns its mathematical nature, which may be nonuniform over the domain. Due to the local degeneracy of the diffusion term, it can be purely hyperbolic in a subregion and elliptic in the rest. This problem is thus quite delicate to solve since the exact solution is discontinuous at interfaces separating both elliptic and hyperbolic parts. The proposed HDG method is developed in a unified and compact …
