We prove a sharp isoperimetric inequality for the second nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian on $S^m$. For $S^{2}$, the second nonzero eigenvalue becomes maximal as the surface degenerates to two disjoint spheres, by a result of Nadirashvili for which Petrides later gave another proof. For higher dimensional spheres, the analogous upper bound was conjectured by Girouard, Nadirashvili and Polterovich. Our method to confirm the conjecture builds on Petrides' work and recent developments on the hyperbolic center of mass and provides also a simpler proof for $S^2$.
We present an explicit formula for the leading coefficient in the asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalue counting function of the Kohn Laplacian on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2n-1}$.
We compute the leading coefficient in the asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalue counting function for the Kohn Laplacian on the spheres. We express the coefficient as an infinite sum and as an integral.
In this note, we study the spectrum of the Kohn Laplacian on the unit spheres in $\mathbb{C}^n$ and revisit Folland's classical eigenvalue computation. We also look at the growth rate of the eigenvalue counting function in this context. Finally, we consider the growth rate of the eigenvalues of the perturbed Kohn Laplacian on the Rossi sphere in $\mathbb{C}^2$.
We compute three-term semiclassical asymptotic expansions of counting functions and Riesz-means of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on spheres and hemispheres, for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Specifically for Riesz-means we prove upper and lower bounds involving asymptotically sharp shift terms, and we extend them to domains of $\mathbb S^d$. We also prove a Berezin-Li-Yau inequality for domains contained in the hemisphere $\mathbb S^2_+$. Moreover, we consider polyharmonic operators for which we prove analogous results that highlight the role of dimension for Pólya-type in…
We consider an optimization problem for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian on a hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$, with $n \ge 2$. If $p \ge 2n-1$, then among hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ which are $O(n) \times O(n)$-invariant and have one fixed boundary component, there is a surface which maximizes the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian. This surface is either Simons' cone or a $C^1$ hypersurface, depending on $p$ and $n$. If $n$ is fixed and $p$ is large, then the maximizing surface is not Simons' cone. If $p=2$ and $n \le 5$, then Simons' cone does not ma…
We prove Berezin--Li--Yau inequalities for the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues on domains on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$. The case of $\mathbb{S}^{2}$ is treated in greater detail, including the vector Dirichlet Laplacian and the Stokes operator.
Let $Σ$ be an oriented compact hypersurface in the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ or in the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^n$, $n\geq 3$. In the case of the torus, $Σ$ is further assumed to be contained in a contractible subset of $\mathbb{T}^n$. We show that for any sufficiently large enough odd integer $N$ there exists an eigenfunctions $ψ$ of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{T}^n$ satisfying $Δψ=-λψ$ (with $λ=N(N+n-1)$ or $N^2$ on $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{T}^n$, respectively), and with a connected component of the nodal set of $ψ$ given by~$Σ$, up to an ambient diffeomorphism.
We prove upper bounds on the $L^p$ norms of eigenfunctions of the discrete Laplacian on regular graphs. We then apply these ideas to study the $L^p$ norms of joint eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and an averaging operator over a finite collection of algebraic rotations of the $2$-sphere. Under mild conditions, such joint eigenfunctions are shown to satisfy for large $p$ the same bounds as those known for Laplace eigenfunctions on a surface of non-positive curvature.
For each degree p, we construct on any closed manifold a family of Riemannian metrics, with fixed volume such that any positive eigenvalues of the rough and Hodge Laplacians acting on differential p-forms converge to zero. In particular, on the sphere, we can choose these Riemannian metrics as those of non-negative sectional curvature. This is a generalization of the results by Colbois and Maerten in 2010 to the case of higher degree forms.
In this paper, we investigate the first eigenvalues of two closed eigenvalue problems of the bi-Beltrami-Laplacian on minimal embedded isoparametric hypersurface in the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}(1)$. Although many mathematicians want to derive the corresponding results for the first eigenvalues of bi-Beltrami-Laplacian, they encountered great difficulties in proving the limit theorem of the version of bi-Beltrami-Laplacian along with the strategy due to I. Chavel and E. A. Feldman(Journal of Functional Analysis, 30 (1978), 198-222) and S. Ozawa (Duke Mathematics Journal, 48 (1981),767-778)…
In [SWW16, HW17] it is shown that the difference of the first two eigenvalues of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary condition on convex domain with diameter $D$ of sphere $\mathbb S^n$ is $\geq 3 \frac{π^2}{D^2}$ when $n \geq 3$. We prove the same result when $n=2$. In fact our proof works for all dimension. We also give an asymptotic expansion of the first and second Dirichlet eigenvalues of the model in [SWW16].
Let $(M,g)$ be a connected, closed, orientable Riemannian surface and denote by $λ_k(M,g)$ the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $(M,g)$. In this paper, we consider the mapping $(M, g)\mapsto λ_k(M,g)$. We propose a computational method for finding the conformal spectrum $Λ^c_k(M,[g_0])$, which is defined by the eigenvalue optimization problem of maximizing $λ_k(M,g)$ for $k$ fixed as $g$ varies within a conformal class $[g_0]$ of fixed volume $textrm{vol}(M,g) = 1$. We also propose a computational method for the problem where $M$ is additionally allowed to vary over surfac…
We prove quantum ergodicity for certain orthonormal bases of $L^2(\mathbb{S}^2)$, consisting of joint eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and the discrete averaging operator over a finite set of rotations, generating a free group. If in addition the rotations are algebraic we give a quantified version of this result. The methods used also give a new, simplified proof of quantum ergodicity for large regular graphs.
We consider the optimization problem of maximizing the $k$-th Laplacian eigenvalue, $λ_{k}$, over flat $d$-dimensional tori of fixed volume. For $k=1$, this problem is equivalent to the densest lattice sphere packing problem. For larger $k$, this is equivalent to the NP-hard problem of finding the $d$-dimensional (dual) lattice with longest $k$-th shortest lattice vector. As a result of extensive computations, for $d \leq 8$, we obtain a sequence of flat tori, $T_{k,d}$, each of volume one, such that the $k$-th Laplacian eigenvalue of $T_{k,d}$ is very large; for each (finite) $k$ the $k$-th e…
