We study the distribution of singular values of product of random matrices pertinent to the analysis of deep neural networks. The matrices resemble the product of the sample covariance matrices, however, an important difference is that the population covariance matrices assumed to be non-random or random but independent of the random data matrix in statistics and random matrix theory are now certain functions of random data matrices (synaptic weight matrices in the deep neural network terminology). The problem has been treated in recent work [25, 13] by using the techniques of free probability theory. Since, however, free probability theory deals with population covariance matrices which are independent of the data matrices, its applicability has to be justified. The justification has been given in [22] for Gaussian data matrices with independent entries, a standard analytical model of free probability, by using a version of the techniques of random matrix theory. In this paper we use another, more streamlined, version of the techniques of random matrix theory to generalize the results of [22] to the case where the entries of the synaptic weight matrices are just independent identically distributed random variables with zero mean and finite fourth moment. This, in particular, extends the property of the so-called macroscopic universality on the considered random matrices.
The paper deals with distribution of singular values of product of random matrices arising in the analysis of deep neural networks. The matrices resemble the product analogs of the sample covariance matrices, however, an important difference is that the population covariance matrices, which are assumed to be non-random in the standard setting of statistics and random matrix theory, are now random, moreover, are certain functions of random data matrices. The problem has been considered in recent work [21] by using the techniques of free probability theory. Since, however, free probability theor…
We consider continuous cocycles arising from CMV and Jacobi matrices. Assuming the Verblunsky and Jacobi coefficients arise from generalized skew-shifts, we prove that uniform hyperbolicity of the associated cocycles is $C^0$-dense. This implies that the associated CMV and Jacobi matrices have Cantor spectrum for a generic continuous sampling map.
Let $D$ be a space of $2\times n$ matrices. Then the face of the cone of all completely positive maps from $M_2$ into $M_n$ given by $D$ is an exposed face of the bigger cone of all decomposable positive linear maps if and only if the set of all rank one matrices in $D$ forms a subspace of $D$ together with zero and $D^\perp$ is spanned by rank one matrices.
We study Yang-Baxter sigma models with deformed 4D Minkowski spacetimes arising from classical $r$-matrices associated with $κ$-deformations of the Poincaré algebra. These classical $κ$-Poincaré $r$-matrices describe three kinds of deformations: 1) the standard deformation, 2) the tachyonic deformation, and 3) the light-cone deformation. For each deformation, the metric and two-form $B$-field are computed from the associated $r$-matrix. The first two deformations, related to the modified classical Yang-Baxter equation, lead to T-duals of dS$_4$ and AdS$_4$\,, respectively. The third deformatio…
We consider a class of elliptic random matrices which generalize two classical ensembles from random matrix theory: Wigner matrices and random matrices with iid entries. In particular, we establish a central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of real elliptic random matrices under the assumption that the test functions are analytic. As a corollary, we extend the results of Rider and Silverstein to real iid random matrices.
We study the asymptotic behavior of outliers in the spectrum of bounded rank perturbations of large random matrices. In particular, we consider perturbations of elliptic random matrices which generalize both Wigner random matrices and non-Hermitian random matrices with iid entries. As a consequence, we recover the results of Capitaine, Donati-Martin, and Féral for perturbed Wigner matrices as well as the results of Tao for perturbed random matrices with iid entries. Along the way, we prove a number of interesting results concerning elliptic random matrices whose entries have finite fourth mome…
We extend the results about the fluctuations of the matrix entries of regular functions of Wigner matrices to the case of sample covariance random matrices.
In deriving large n probability distribution function of the rightmost eigenvalue from the classical Random Matrix Theory Ensembles, one is faced with que question of finding large n asymptotic of certain coupled set of functions. This paper presents some of these functions in a new light.
We show that Lyapunov exponents and stability exponents are equal in the case of product of $i.i.d$ isotropic(also known as bi-unitarily invariant) random matrices. We also derive aysmptotic distribution of singular values and eigenvalues of these product random matrices. Moreover, Lyapunov exponents are distinct, unless the random matrices are random scalar multiples of Haar unitary matrices or orthogonal matrices. As a corollary of above result, we show probability that product of $n$ $i.i.d$ real isotropic random matrices has all eigenvalues real goes to one as $n \to \infty$. Also, in the …
We present further examples of the correspondence between solutions of type IIB supergravity and classical $r$-matrices satisfying the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE). In the previous works, classical $r$-matrices have been composed of generators of only one of either $\mathfrak{so}(2,4)$ or $\mathfrak{so}(6)$. In this paper, we consider some examples of $r$-matrices with both of them. The $r$-matrices of this kind contain (generalized) Schrödinger spacetimes and gravity duals of dipole theories. It is known that the generalized Schrödinger spacetimes can also be obtained via a certain c…
We survey recent mathematical results about the spectrum of random band matrices. We start by exposing the Erd{\H o}s-Schlein-Yau dynamic approach, its application to Wigner matrices, and extension to other mean-field models. We then introduce random band matrices and the problem of their Anderson transition. We finally describe a method to obtain delocalization and universality in some sparse regimes, highlighting the role of quantum unique ergodicity.
There is a natural action of the braid group on the symmetric matrices with units on the diagonal, appearing in various fields as Singularity Theory, Frobenius Manifolds or Isomonodromic deformations of certain classes of linear differential systems. The problem of finding the finite orbits of this action for the case of non-degenerate three-dimensional matrices was solved and it was conjectured that the finite orbits on any non-degenerate matrices correspond to finite Coxeter groups and conjugacy classes of quasicoxeter elements in them. In the present work it is considered another extremal c…
We present a simple and versatile method for deriving (an)isotropic local laws for general random matrices constructed from independent random variables. Our method is applicable to mean-field random matrices, where all independent variables have comparable variances. It is entirely insensitive to the expectation of the matrix. In this paper we focus on the probabilistic part of the proof -- the derivation of the self-consistent equations. As a concrete application, we settle in complete generality the local law for Wigner matrices with arbitrary expectation.
An elliptic random matrix $X$ is a square matrix whose $(i,j)$-entry $X_{ij}$ is independent of the rest of the entries except possibly $X_{ji}$. Elliptic random matrices generalize Wigner matrices and non-Hermitian random matrices with independent entries. When the entries of an elliptic random matrix have mean zero and unit variance, the empirical spectral distribution is known to converge to the uniform distribution on the interior of an ellipse determined by the covariance of the mirrored entries. We consider elliptic random matrices whose entries fail to have two finite moments. Our main …
We prove the Central Limit Theorem for linear statistics of the eigenvalues of band random matrices provided $\sqrt{n} \ll b_n \ll n$ and test functions are sufficiently smooth.
We extend the random characteristics approach to Wigner matrices whose entries are not required to have a normal distribution. As an application, we give a simple and fully dynamical proof of the weak local semicircle law in the bulk.
We prove concentration results for $\ell_p^n$ operator norms of rectangular random matrices and eigenvalues of self-adjoint random matrices. The random matrices we consider have bounded entries which are independent, up to a possible self-adjointness constraint. Our results are based on an isoperimetric inequality for product spaces due to Talagrand.
For tri-diagonal matrices arising in the simplified Jaynes--Cummings model, we give an asymptotics of the eigenvalues, prove a trace formula and show that the Spectral Riemann Surface is irreducible.
The topic of this paper is the typical behavior of the spectral measures of large random matrices drawn from several ensembles of interest, including in particular matrices drawn from Haar measure on the classical Lie groups, random compressions of random Hermitian matrices, and the so-called random sum of two independent random matrices. In each case, we estimate the expected Wasserstein distance from the empirical spectral measure to a deterministic reference measure, and prove a concentration result for that distance. As a consequence we obtain almost sure convergence of the empirical spect…
We prove Anderson localization (AL) and dynamical localization in expectation (EDL, also known as strong dynamical localization) for random CMV matrices for arbitrary distribution of i.i.d. Verblunsky coefficients.
We investigate the implications of free probability for random matrices. From rules for calculating all possible joint moments of two free random matrices, we develop a notion of partial freeness which is quantified by the breakdown of these rules. We provide a combinatorial interpretation for partial freeness as the presence of closed paths in Hilbert space defined by particular joint moments. We also discuss how asymptotic moment expansions provide an error term on the density of states. We present MATLAB code for the calculation of moments and free cumulants of arbitrary random matrices.
In this paper, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the persistence probability in the positive real line of a random polynomial arising from evolutionary game theory. It corresponds to the probability that a multi-player two-strategy random evolutionary game has no internal equilibria. The key ingredient is to approximate the sequence of random polynomials indexed by their degrees by an appropriate centered stationary Gaussian process.

The spectral density of random matrices is studied through a quaternionic generalisation of the Green's function, which precisely describes the mean spectral density of a given matrix under a particular type of random perturbation. Exact and universal expressions are found in the high-dimension limit for the quaternionic Green's functions of random matrices with independent entries when summed or multiplied with deterministic matrices. From these, the limiting spectral density can be accurately predicted.
We study probability distributions of eigenvalues of Hermitian and non-Hermitian Euclidean random matrices that are typically encountered in the problems of wave propagation in random media.
The fermionic, bosonic and supersymmetric variants of the colour-flavour transformation are derived for the orthogonal group. These transformations are then used to calculate the ensemble averages of characteristic polynomials of real random matrices.
Integer moments of the spectral determinant $|\det(zI-W)|^2$ of complex random matrices $W$ are obtained in terms of the characteristic polynomial of the Hermitian matrix $WW^*$ for the class of matrices $W=AU$ where $A$ is a given matrix and $U$ is random unitary. This work is motivated by studies of complex eigenvalues of random matrices and potential applications of the obtained results in this context are discussed.
We show that the Circular Orthogonal Ensemble of random matrices arises naturally from a family of random polynomials. This sheds light on the appearance of random matrix statistics in the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function.
We discuss non-Gaussian random matrices whose elements are random variables with heavy-tailed probability distributions. In probability theory heavy tails of the distributions describe rare but violent events which usually have dominant influence on the statistics. They also completely change universal properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of random matrices. We concentrate here on the universal macroscopic properties of (1) Wigner matrices belonging to the Levy basin of attraction, (2) matrices representing stable free random variables and (3) a class of heavy-tailed matrices obtained by…
The power-law random banded matrices and the ultrametric random matrices are investigated numerically in the regime where eigenstates are extended but all integer matrix moments remain finite in the limit of large matrix dimensions. Though in this case standard analytical tools are inapplicable, we found that in all considered cases eigenvector distributions are extremely well described by the generalised hyperbolic distribution which differs considerably from the usual Porter-Thomas distribution but shares with it certain universal properties.
In this paper we study the distribution of level crossings for the spectra of linear families A+lambda B, where A and B are square matrices independently chosen from some given Gaussian ensemble and lambda is a complex-valued parameter. We formulate a number of theoretical and numerical results for the classical Gaussian ensembles and some generalisations. Besides, we present intriguing numerical information about the distribution of monodromy in case of linear families for the classical Gaussian ensembles of 3 * 3 matrices.
We analyze composed quantum systems consisting of $k$ subsystems, each described by states in the $n$-dimensional Hilbert space. Interaction between subsystems can be represented by a graph, with vertices corresponding to individual subsystems and edges denoting a generic interaction, modeled by random unitary matrices of order $n^2$. The global evolution operator is represented by a unitary matrix of size $N=n^k$. We investigate statistical properties of such matrices and show that they display spectral properties characteristic to Haar random unitary matrices provided the corresponding graph…
We review the state of the art of the theory of Euclidean random matrices, focusing on the density of their eigenvalues. Both Hermitian and non-Hermitian matrices are considered and links with simpler, standard random matrix ensembles are established. We discuss applications of Euclidean random matrices to contemporary problems in condensed matter physics, optics, and quantum chaos.
We present a survey of recent results concerning a remarkable class of unitary matrices, the CMV matrices. We are particularly interested in the role they play in the theory of random matrices and integrable systems. Throughout the paper we also emphasize the analogies and connections to Jacobi matrices.
Random unitary matrices find a number of applications in quantum information science, and are central to the recently defined boson sampling algorithm for photons in linear optics. We describe an operationally simple method to directly implement Haar random unitary matrices in optical circuits, with no requirement for prior or explicit matrix calculations. Our physically-motivated and compact representation directly maps independent probability density functions for parameters in Haar random unitary matrices, to optical circuit components. We go on to extend the results to the case of random u…
To every product of $2\times2$ matrices, there corresponds a one-dimensional Schrödinger equation whose potential consists of generalised point scatterers. Products of {\em random} matrices are obtained by making these interactions and their positions random. We exhibit a simple one-dimensional quantum model corresponding to the most general product of matrices in $\text{SL}(2, {\mathbb R})$. We use this correspondence to find new examples of products of random matrices for which the invariant measure can be expressed in simple analytical terms.
We present new and streamlined proofs of various formulae for products and ratios of characteristic polynomials of random Hermitian matrices that have appeared recently in the literature.
Ensembles of random stochastic and bistochastic matrices are investigated. While all columns of a random stochastic matrix can be chosen independently, the rows and columns of a bistochastic matrix have to be correlated. We evaluate the probability measure induced into the Birkhoff polytope of bistochastic matrices by applying the Sinkhorn algorithm to a given ensemble of random stochastic matrices. For matrices of order N=2 we derive explicit formulae for the probability distributions induced by random stochastic matrices with columns distributed according to the Dirichlet distribution. For a…
