The Akhmediev breather (AB) and its M-soliton generalization $AB_M$ are exact solutions of the focusing NLS equation periodic in space and exponentially localized in time over the constant unstable background; they describe the appearance of $M$ unstable nonlinear modes and their interaction, and they are expected to play a relevant role in the theory of periodic anomalous (rogue) waves (AWs) in nature. It is rather well established that they are unstable with respect to small perturbations of the NLS equation. Concerning perturbations of these solutions within the NLS dynamics, there is the following common believe in the literature. Let the NLS background be unstable with respect to the first $N$ modes; then i) if the $M$ unstable modes of the $AB_M$ solution are strictly contained in this set ($M<N$), then the $AB_M$ is unstable; ii) if $M=N$, the so-called "saturation of the instability", then the $AB_M$ solution is neutrally stable. We argue instead that the $AB_M$ solution is always unstable, even in the saturation case $M=N$, and we prove it in the simplest case $M=N=1$. We first prove the linear instability, constructing two examples of $x$-periodic solutions of the linearized theory growing exponentially in time. Then we investigate the nonlinear instability using our previous results showing that i) a perturbed AB initial condition evolves into an exact Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) recurrence of ABs described in terms of elementary functions of the initial data, to leading order; ii) the AB solution is more unstable than the background solution, and its instability increases as $T\to 0$, where $T$ is the AB appearance parameter. Although the AB solution is linearly and nonlinearly unstable, it is relevant in nature, since its instability generates a FPUT recurrence of ABs. These results suitably generalize to the case $M=N>1$.
We analyze temporal and spectral characteristics of Akhmediev breather and establish amplification and transmission of attenuated multi-soliton in nonlinear optical fiber. Our results show that the attenuated multi-soliton can be converted into Akhmediev breather through a judicious modulation of the spectrum. Subsequently, the maximally compressed pulse train of Akhmediev breather can be used to establish a robust breathing transmission by another spectrum modulation. In addition, the influence of the spectral modulation intensity on the excitation of Akhmediev breather and transmission of ma…
This article discusses a limiting behavior of breather solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. These breathers belong to the families of solitons on a non-vanishing and constant background, where the continuous-wave envelope serves as a pedestal. The rational Peregrine soliton acts as a limiting behavior of the other two breather solitons, i.e., the Kuznetsov-Ma breather and Akhmediev soliton. Albeit with a phase shift, the latter becomes a nonlinear extension of the homoclinic orbit waveform corresponding to an unstable mode in the modulational instability phenomenon. …
We reveal a new class of \textit{non-degenerate} Akhmediev breather (AB) solutions of Manakov equations that only exist in the focusing case. Based on exact solutions, we present the existence diagram of such excitations on the frequency-wavenumber plane. Conventional single-frequency modulation instability leads to simultaneous excitation of three ABs with two of them being non-degenerate.

We report an exact link between Zakharov-Gelash super-regular (SR) breathers (formed by a pair of quasi-Akhmediev breathers) with interesting different nonlinear propagation characteristics and modulation instability (MI). This shows that the absolute difference of group velocities of SR breathers coincides exactly with the linear MI growth rate. This link holds for a series of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with infinite-order terms. For the particular case of SR breathers with opposite group velocities, the growth rate of SR breathers is consistent with that of each quasi-Akhmediev breather…
We investigate generalized nonlocal coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equation containing Self-Phase Modulation, Cross-Phase Modulation and Four-Wave Mixing involving nonlocal interaction. By means of Darboux transformation, we obtained a family of exact breathers and solitons including the Peregrine soliton, Kuznetsov-Ma breather, Akhmediev breather along with all kinds of soliton-soliton and breather-soliton interactions. We analyze and emphasize the impact of the four-wave mixing on the nature and interaction of the solutions. We found that the presence of Four-Wave Mixing converts a two-solit…
We numerically realize breather gas for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This is done by building a random ensemble of N $\sim$ 50 breathers via the Darboux transform recursive scheme in high precision arithmetics. Three types of breather gases are synthesized according to the three prototypical spectral configurations corresponding the Akhmediev, Kuznetsov-Ma and Peregrine breathers as elementary quasi-particles of the respective gases. The interaction properties of the constructed breather gases are investigated by propagating through them a "trial" generic breather (Tajiri-Watan…
We visualize the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) recurrence in a classical Heisenberg ferromagnetic (HF) spin chain by exploiting its gauge eq uivalence to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). We discuss two types of spatially periodic breather excitations in the spin chain, that are associated with: (I) Akhmediev breather, and (II) Galilean transformed Akhmediev breather. The recurrence in the former is exact in the sense that the initial and final states are identical. In the later, the spin chain undergoes an additional global rotation during the rec urrence process, which makes the i…
Superregular (SR) breathers are nonlinear wave structures formed by a unique nonlinear superposition of pairs of quasi-Akhmediev breathers. They describe a complete scenario of modulation instability that develops from localized small perturbations as well as an unusual quasiannihilation of breather collision. Here, we demonstrate that femtosecond optical SR breathers in optical fibers exhibit intriguing half-transition and full-suppression states, which are absent in the picosecond regime governed by the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In particular, the full-suppression mode, which …
We consider a coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with modulated self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, and four-wave mixing nonlinearities and varying refractive index in anisotropic graded index nonlinear medium. By identifying an appropriate similarity transformation, we obtain a general localized wave solution and investigate their dynamics with a proper set of modulated nonlinearities. In particular, our study reveals different manifestations of localized waves such as stable solitons, Akhmediev breathers, Ma breathers, and rogue waves of bright, bright-dark, and dar…
Solitons on a finite a background, also called breathers, are solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which play a pivotal role in the description of rogue waves and modulation instability. The breather family includes Akhmediev breathers (AB), Kuznetsov-Ma (KM), and Peregrine solitons (PS), which have been successfully exploited to describe several physical effects. These families of solutions are actually only particular cases of a more general three-parameter class of solutions originally derived by Akhmediev, Eleonskii and Kulagin [Theor. Math. Phys. {\bf 72}, 809--818 (1…
We present both theoretical description and experimental observation of the modulation instability process and related rogue breathers in the case of stationary periodic background waves, namely cnoidal and dnoidal envelopes. Despite being well-known solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the stability of such background waves has remained unexplored experimentally until now, unlike the fundamental plane wave. By means of two experimental setups, namely, in nonlinear optics and hydrodynamics, we report on quantitative measurements of spontaneous modulation instability gain seeded by …
The nonlinear stage of modulational instability in optical fibers induced by a wide and easily accessible class of localized perturbations is studied using the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. It is showed that the development of associated spatio-temporal patterns is strongly affected by the shape and the parameters of the perturbation. Different scenarios are presented that involve an auto-modulation developing in a characteristic wedge, possibly coexisting with breathers which lie inside or outside the wedge.
It is well-known that third-order dispersion (TOD) never allows the continuous wave of any nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) type system to experience modulational instability (MI). Remarkably, we demonstrate a new kind of MI induced by TOD with spatial dispersion accounting for Wannier exciton mass in a ZnCdSe/ZnSe semiconductor superlattice. We also numerically predict the existence of novel Akhmediev breathers and Peregrine solitons due to the nonlinear development of MI with TOD.

We revisit the problem of transverse instability of a 2D breather stripe of the sine-Gordon (sG) equation. A numerically computed Floquet spectrum of the stripe is compared to analytical predictions developed by means of multiple-scale perturbation theory showing good agreement in the long-wavelength limit. By means of direct simulations, it is found that the instability leads to a breakup of the quasi-1D breather in a chain of interacting 2D radial breathers that appear to be fairly robust in the dynamics. The stability and dynamics of radial breathers in a finite domain are studied in detail…
A nonlinear chain with six-order polynomial on-site potential is used to analyze the evolution of the total to kinetic energy ratio during development of modulational instability of extended nonlinear vibrational modes. For the on-site potential of hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity, the instability of $q=π$ mode ($q=0$ mode) results in the appearance of long-living discrete breathers (DBs) that gradually radiate their energy and eventually the system approaches thermal equilibrium with spatially uniform and temporally constant temperature. In the hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity case, the…
Mutual interaction of localized nonlinear waves, e.g. solitons and modulation instability patterns, is a fascinating and intensively-studied topic of nonlinear science. In this research report, we report on the observation of a novel type of breather interaction in telecommunication optical fibers, in which two identical breathers propagate with opposite group velocities. Under certain conditions, neither amplification nor annihilation occur at the collision point and most interestingly, its amplitude is almost equal to another maximum of either oscillating breather. This ghost-like breather i…
For a one-dimensional linear lattice, earlier work has shown how to systematically construct a slowly-decaying linear potential bearing a localized eigenmode embedded in the continuous spectrum. Here, we extend this idea in two directions: The first one is in the realm of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation, where the linear operator of the Schrodinger type is considered in the presence of a Kerr focusing or defocusing nonlinearity and the embedded linear mode is continued into the nonlinear regime as a discrete solitary wave. The second case is the Klein-Gordon setting, where the pres…
