Higher-order modulation instability and multi-Akhmediev breathers of Manakov equations: Frequency jumps over the stable gaps between the instability bands
We study higher-order modulation instability phenomena in the frame of Manakov equations. Evolution that starts with a single pair of sidebands expands over several higher harmonics. The choice of initial pair of sidebands influences the structure of unstable frequency components and changes drastically the wave evolution leading, in some cases, to jumps across spectral components within the discrete spectrum. This complex dynamics includes several growth-decay cycles of evolution. We show this using numerical simulations of the MI process and confirm the results using the exact multi-Akhmediev breather solutions. Detailed explanation of the observed phenomena are given.
We reveal a new class of \textit{non-degenerate} Akhmediev breather (AB) solutions of Manakov equations that only exist in the focusing case. Based on exact solutions, we present the existence diagram of such excitations on the frequency-wavenumber plane. Conventional single-frequency modulation instability leads to simultaneous excitation of three ABs with two of them being non-degenerate.
It is well known that Akhmediev breathers of the nonlinear cubic Schrodinger equation can be superposed nonlinearly via the Darboux transformation to yield breathers of higher order. Surprisingly, we find that the peak height of each Akhmediev breather only adds {\it linearly} to form the peak height of the final breather. Using this new peak-height formula, we show that at any given periodicity, there exist a unique high-order breather of maximal intensity. Moreover, these high-order breathers form a continuous hierarchy, growing in intensity with increasing periodicity. For any such higher-o…
We analyze temporal and spectral characteristics of Akhmediev breather and establish amplification and transmission of attenuated multi-soliton in nonlinear optical fiber. Our results show that the attenuated multi-soliton can be converted into Akhmediev breather through a judicious modulation of the spectrum. Subsequently, the maximally compressed pulse train of Akhmediev breather can be used to establish a robust breathing transmission by another spectrum modulation. In addition, the influence of the spectral modulation intensity on the excitation of Akhmediev breather and transmission of ma…
We present explicit forms of general breather (GB), Akhmediev breather (AB), Ma soliton (MS) and rogue wave (RW) solutions of the two component nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, namely Manakov equation. We derive these solutions through two different routes. In the forward route we first construct a suitable periodic envelope soliton solution to this model from which we derive GB, AB, MS and RW solutions. We then consider the RW solution as the starting point and derive AB, MS and GB in the reverse direction. The second approach has not been illustrated so far for the two component NLS equ…
This article discusses a limiting behavior of breather solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. These breathers belong to the families of solitons on a non-vanishing and constant background, where the continuous-wave envelope serves as a pedestal. The rational Peregrine soliton acts as a limiting behavior of the other two breather solitons, i.e., the Kuznetsov-Ma breather and Akhmediev soliton. Albeit with a phase shift, the latter becomes a nonlinear extension of the homoclinic orbit waveform corresponding to an unstable mode in the modulational instability phenomenon. …
We investigate the formation of optical localized nonlinear structures, evolving upon a non-zero background plane wave, in a dispersive quadratic medium. We show the existence of quadratic Akhmediev breathers and Peregrine solitary waves, in the regime of cascading second-harmonic generation. This finding opens a novel path for the excitation of extreme rogue waves and for the description of modulation instability in quadratic nonlinear optics.
By invoking Bogoliubov's spectrum, we show that for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the modulation instability (MI) of its n = 1 Fourier mode on a finite background automatically triggers a further cascading instability, forcing all the higher modes to grow exponentially in locked-step with the n = 1 mode. This fundamental insight, the enslavement of all higher modes to the n = 1 mode, explains the formation of a triangular-shaped spectrum which generates the Akhmediev breather, predicts its formation time analytically from the initial modulation amplitude, and shows that the Fermi-Pasta-…
We report an exact link between Zakharov-Gelash super-regular (SR) breathers (formed by a pair of quasi-Akhmediev breathers) with interesting different nonlinear propagation characteristics and modulation instability (MI). This shows that the absolute difference of group velocities of SR breathers coincides exactly with the linear MI growth rate. This link holds for a series of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with infinite-order terms. For the particular case of SR breathers with opposite group velocities, the growth rate of SR breathers is consistent with that of each quasi-Akhmediev breather…

In this paper we study the numerical instabilities of the NLS Akhmediev breather, the simplest space periodic, one-mode perturbation of the unstable background, limiting our considerations to the simplest case of one unstable mode. In agreement with recent theoretical findings of the authors, in the situation in which the round-off errors are negligible with respect to the perturbations due to the discrete scheme used in the numerical experiments, the split-step Fourier method (SSFM), the numerical output is well-described by a suitable genus 2 finite-gap solution of NLS. This solution can be …
We investigate generalized nonlocal coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equation containing Self-Phase Modulation, Cross-Phase Modulation and Four-Wave Mixing involving nonlocal interaction. By means of Darboux transformation, we obtained a family of exact breathers and solitons including the Peregrine soliton, Kuznetsov-Ma breather, Akhmediev breather along with all kinds of soliton-soliton and breather-soliton interactions. We analyze and emphasize the impact of the four-wave mixing on the nature and interaction of the solutions. We found that the presence of Four-Wave Mixing converts a two-solit…
Superregular (SR) breathers are nonlinear wave structures formed by a unique nonlinear superposition of pairs of quasi-Akhmediev breathers. They describe a complete scenario of modulation instability that develops from localized small perturbations as well as an unusual quasiannihilation of breather collision. Here, we demonstrate that femtosecond optical SR breathers in optical fibers exhibit intriguing half-transition and full-suppression states, which are absent in the picosecond regime governed by the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In particular, the full-suppression mode, which …
We visualize the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) recurrence in a classical Heisenberg ferromagnetic (HF) spin chain by exploiting its gauge eq uivalence to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). We discuss two types of spatially periodic breather excitations in the spin chain, that are associated with: (I) Akhmediev breather, and (II) Galilean transformed Akhmediev breather. The recurrence in the former is exact in the sense that the initial and final states are identical. In the later, the spin chain undergoes an additional global rotation during the rec urrence process, which makes the i…
We construct breather and rogue wave solutions of a variable coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an external linear potential. This generalized model describes the nonlinear wave propagation in an inhomogeneous plasma/medium. We derive several localized solutions including Ma breather, Akhmediev breather, two-breather and rogue wave solutions of this model and show how the inhomogeneity of space modifies the shape and orientation of these localized structures. We also depict the trajectories of the inhomogeneous rogue wave. Our results may be useful for controlling plasmonic energy…
The Akhmediev breather (AB) and its M-soliton generalization $AB_M$ are exact solutions of the focusing NLS equation periodic in space and exponentially localized in time over the constant unstable background; they describe the appearance of $M$ unstable nonlinear modes and their interaction, and they are expected to play a relevant role in the theory of periodic anomalous (rogue) waves (AWs) in nature. It is rather well established that they are unstable with respect to small perturbations of the NLS equation. Concerning perturbations of these solutions within the NLS dynamics, there is the f…
Solitons on a finite a background, also called breathers, are solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which play a pivotal role in the description of rogue waves and modulation instability. The breather family includes Akhmediev breathers (AB), Kuznetsov-Ma (KM), and Peregrine solitons (PS), which have been successfully exploited to describe several physical effects. These families of solutions are actually only particular cases of a more general three-parameter class of solutions originally derived by Akhmediev, Eleonskii and Kulagin [Theor. Math. Phys. {\bf 72}, 809--818 (1…
We consider a coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with modulated self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, and four-wave mixing nonlinearities and varying refractive index in anisotropic graded index nonlinear medium. By identifying an appropriate similarity transformation, we obtain a general localized wave solution and investigate their dynamics with a proper set of modulated nonlinearities. In particular, our study reveals different manifestations of localized waves such as stable solitons, Akhmediev breathers, Ma breathers, and rogue waves of bright, bright-dark, and dar…
We numerically realize breather gas for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This is done by building a random ensemble of N $\sim$ 50 breathers via the Darboux transform recursive scheme in high precision arithmetics. Three types of breather gases are synthesized according to the three prototypical spectral configurations corresponding the Akhmediev, Kuznetsov-Ma and Peregrine breathers as elementary quasi-particles of the respective gases. The interaction properties of the constructed breather gases are investigated by propagating through them a "trial" generic breather (Tajiri-Watan…
Breathers and rogue waves of special coupled nonlinear Schrödinger systems (the Manakov equations) are studied analytically. These systems model the orthogonal polarization modes in an optical fiber with randomly varying birefringence. Unlike the situation in a waveguide with zero birefringence, rogue waves can occur in these Manakov systems with dispersion and nonlinearity of opposite signs, provided that a group velocity mismatch is present. The criterion for the existence of rogue waves correlates exactly with the onset of modulation instability. Theoretically the Hirota bilinear transform …
We study the dynamics of superposed nonlinear waves in coherently coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (CCGP) equations with constant (autonomous system) and time varying (non-autonomous system) nonlinearity co-efficients. By employing a linear transformation, the autonomous CCGP system is converted into two separate scalar nonlinear Schrödinger equations and we show that linear superposition of different nonlinear wave solutions of these scalar equations results into several kinds of nonlinear coherent structures namely, coexisting rogue wave-Ma breather, Akhmediev-Ma breathers, collision and bound state…
We construct dark-dark solitons, general breather (GB), Akhmediev breather (AB), Ma soliton (MS) and rogue wave (RW) solutions of a coupled generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (CGNLS) equation. While the dark-dark solitons are captured in the defocusing regime of CGNLS system, the other solutions, namely GB, AB, MS and RW, are identified in the focusing regime. We also analyze the structures of GB, AB, MS and RW profiles with respect to the four-wave mixing parameter. We show that when we increase the value of the real part of the four wave mixing parameter, the number of peaks in the breather p…
We study on the relations between modulational instability and several well-known nonlinear excitations in a nonlinear fiber, such as bright soliton, nonlinear continuous wave, Akhmediev breather, Peregrine rogue wave, and Kuznetsov-Ma breather. We present a quantitative correspondence between them based on the dominant frequency and propagation constant of each perturbation on a continuous wave background. Especially, we find rogue wave comes from modulational instability under the "resonance" perturbation with continuous wave background. These results will deepen our understanding on rogue w…
It is well-known that third-order dispersion (TOD) never allows the continuous wave of any nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) type system to experience modulational instability (MI). Remarkably, we demonstrate a new kind of MI induced by TOD with spatial dispersion accounting for Wannier exciton mass in a ZnCdSe/ZnSe semiconductor superlattice. We also numerically predict the existence of novel Akhmediev breathers and Peregrine solitons due to the nonlinear development of MI with TOD.
We study the solutions of linear Schroedinger equations in which the potential energy is a periodic function of time and is sufficiently localized in space. We consider the potential to be close to one that is time periodic and yet explicitly solvable. A large family of such potentials has been constructed and the corresponding Schroedinger equation solved by Miller and Akhmediev. Exact bound states, or breather modes, exist in the unperturbed problem and are found to be generically metastable in the presence of small periodic perturbations. Thus, these states are long-lived but eventually dec…
We study a variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger (vc-NLS) equation with higher-order effects. We show that the breather solution can be converted into four types of nonlinear waves on constant backgrounds including the multi-peak solitons, antidark soliton, periodic wave and W-shaped soliton. The transition condition requiring the group velocity dispersion (GVD) and third-order dispersion (TOD) to scale linearly is obtained analytically. We display several kinds of elastic interactions between the transformed nonlinear waves. We discuss the dispersion management of multi-peak soliton, whi…
We investigate the localized waves of the coupled two-mode nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a pair-tunneling term representing strongly interacting particles can tunnel between the modes as a fragmented pair. Facilitated by Darboux transformation, we have derived exact solution of nonlinear vector waves such as bright solitons, Kuznetsov-Ma soliton, Akhmediev breathers and rogue waves and demonstrated their interesting temporal-spatial structures. The phase diagram that demarcates the parameter ranges of the nonlinear waves is obtained. Our results have implications in such diverse fields …
We show that, in the pure-quartic systems, modulation instability (MI) undergoes heteroclinic-structure transitions (HSTs) at two critical frequencies of ω c1 and ω c2 ( ω c2 > ω c1 ), which indicates that there are significantchanges of the spatiotemporal behavior in the system. The complicated heteroclinic structure of instability obtained by the mode truncation method reveals all possible dynamic trajectories of nonlinear waves, which allows us to discover the various types of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) recurrences and Akhmediev breathers (ABs). When the modulational frequency satisfies ω < ω c…
We propose a method to controllably generate six kinds of nonlinear waves on continuous waves, including the one- and multi-peak solitons, the Akhmediev, Kuznetsov-Ma, and Taijiri-Watanabe breathers, and stable periodic waves. In the nonlinear fiber system with third-order dispersion, we illustrate their generation conditions by the modified linear stability analysis, and numerically generate them from initial perturbations on continuous waves. We implement the quantitative control over their dynamical features, including the wave type, velocity, periodicity, and localization. Our results may …
