It is well-known that third-order dispersion (TOD) never allows the continuous wave of any nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) type system to experience modulational instability (MI). Remarkably, we demonstrate a new kind of MI induced by TOD with spatial dispersion accounting for Wannier exciton mass in a ZnCdSe/ZnSe semiconductor superlattice. We also numerically predict the existence of novel Akhmediev breathers and Peregrine solitons due to the nonlinear development of MI with TOD.
Modulational instability in a photorefractive medium is studied in the presence of two wave mixing. We then propose and derive a model for forward four wave mixing in the photorefractive medium and investigate the modulational instability induced by four wave mixing effects. By using the standard linear stability analysis the instability gain is obtained. In both the cases, the geometry is such that the effect of self-phase-modulation self-focusing is suppressed and only the holographic focusing nonlinearity is acting.
We present an overview of recent advances in the understanding of optical beams in nonlinear media with a spatially nonlocal nonlinear response. We discuss the impact of nonlocality on the modulational instability of plane waves, the collapse of finite-size beams, and the formation and interaction of spatial solitons.
The modulational instability of two interacting waves in a nonlocal Kerr-type medium is considered analytically and numerically. For a generic choice of wave amplitudes, we give a complete description of stable/unstable regimes for zero group-velocity mismatch. It is shown that nonlocality suppresses considerably the growth rate and bandwidth of instability. For nonzero group-velocity mismatch we perform a geometrical analysis of a nonlocality management which can provide stability of waves otherwise unstable in a local medium.
The modulational instability of broadband optical pulses in a four-state atomic system is investigated. In particular, starting from a recently derived generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, a wave-kinetic equation is derived. A comparison between coherent and random phase wave states is made. It is found that the spatial spectral broadening can contribute to the nonlinear stability of ultra-short optical pulses. In practical terms, this could be achieved by using random phase plate techniques.
We report an optical fiber experiment in which we study nonlinear stage of modulational instability of a plane wave in the presence of a localized perturbation. Using a recirculating fiber loop as experimental platform, we show that the initial perturbation evolves into expanding nonlinear oscillatory structure exhibiting some universal characteristics that agree with theoretical predictions based on integrability properties of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Our experimental results demonstrate persistence of the universal evolution scenario, even in the presence of small dissipa…
We consider the curvature driven dynamics of a domain wall separating two equivalent states in systems displaying a modulational instability of a flat front. We derive an amplitude equation for the dynamics of the curvature close to the bifurcation point from growing to schrinking circular droplets. We predict the existence of stable droplets with a radius $R$ that diverges at the bifurcation point, where a curvature driven growth law $R(t) \approx t^{1/4}$ is obtained. Our general analytical predictions, which are valid for a wide variety of systems including models of nonlinear optical cavit…
In this paper we study a system of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations modelling a quantum degenerate mixture of bosons and fermions. We analyze the stability of plane waves, give precise conditions for the existence of solitons and write explicit solutions in the form of periodic waves. We also check that the solitons observed previously in numerical simulations of the model correspond exactly to our explicit solutions and see how plane waves destabilize to form periodic waves.
We characterize the nonlinear stage of modulational instability (MI) by studying the long-time asymptotics of focusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation on the infinite line with initial conditions that tend to constant values at infinity. Asymptotically in time, the spatial domain divides into three regions: a far left field and a far right field, in which the solution is approximately equal to its initial value, and a central region in which the solution has oscillatory behavior and is described by slow modulations of the periodic traveling wave solutions of the focusing NLS equation. The…
We study evolution of pulses propagating through focusing nonlinear media. Small disturbance on the smooth initial non-uniform background leads to formation of the region of strong nonlinear oscillations. We develop here an asymptotic method for finding the law of motion of the front of this region. The method is applied to the focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation for the particular cases of Talanov and Akhmanov-Sukhorukov-Khokhlov initial distributions with zero initial phase. The approximate analytical results agree well with the exact numerical solutions for these two problems.
We study modulational instability in nonlinear arrays of subwavelength metallic nanoparticles, and analyze numerically nonlinear scenarios of the instability development. We demonstrate that modulational instability can lead to the formation of regular periodic or quasi-periodic modulations of the polarization. We reveal that such nonlinear nanoparticle arrays can support long-lived standing and moving oscillating nonlinear localized modes - plasmon oscillons.
We study the stability properties of periodic solutions to the Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with a periodic potential. We exploit the symmetries of the problem, in particular the Hamiltonian structure and the $\U(1)$ symmetry. We develop a simple sufficient criterion that guarantees the existence of a modulational instability spectrum along the imaginary axis. In the case of small amplitude solutions that bifurcate from the band edges of the linear problem this criterion becomes especially simple. We find that the small amplitude solutions corresponding to the band edges alternate stab…
Modulational instability of continuous waves in nonlocal focusing and defocusing Kerr media with stochastically varying diffraction (dispersion) and nonlinearity coefficients is studied both analytically and numerically. It is shown that nonlocality with the sign-definite Fourier images of the medium response functions suppresses considerably the growth rate peak and bandwidth of instability caused by stochasticity. Contrary, nonlocality can enhance modulational instability growth for a response function with negative-sign bands.
We study the correspondence between modulational instability and types of fundamental nonlinear excitation in a nonlinear fiber with both third-order and fourth-order effects. Some stable soliton excitations are obtained in modulational instability regime, which have not been found in nonlinear fibers with second-order effects and third-order effects. Explicit analysis suggests that the stable soliton existence is related with the modulation stability circle in the modulation instability regime, and they just exist in the modulational instability regime outside of the modulational stability ci…
We study modulational instability (MI) of plane waves in nonlocal nonlinear Kerr media. For a focusing nonlinearity we show that, although the nonlocality tends to suppress MI, it can never remove it completely, irrespectively of the particular profile of the nonlocal response function. For a defocusing nonlinearity the stability properties depend sensitively on the response function profile: for a smooth profile (e.g., a Gaussian) plane waves are always stable, but MI may occur for a rectangular response. We also find that the reduced model for a weak nonlocality predicts MI in defocusing med…
In the framework of Gurevich and Pitaevskii approach [1] we construct modulated by Whitham [2] solution of nonlinear Shrodinger (NS) equation partially saturating the modulational instability. This solution describes new scenario of monochromatic wave evolution in NS equation which leads to generation of new phase and oscillation region.
We study the modulational instability induced by periodic variations of group-velocity dispersion and nonlinear coefficients in a highly birefringent fiber. We observe, for each resonance order, the presence of two pairs of genuine vector type sidebands, which are spectrally unbalanced between the polarization components for nonzero group-index mismatch, and one pair of balanced sidebands emerging and dominating at increasing group-index mismatch. As the conventional modulational instability manifests itself, it is partially suppressed by the proximity of these new unstable regions.
We study the azimuthal modulational instability of vortices with different topological charges, in the focusing two-dimensional nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation. The method of studying the stability relies on freezing the radial direction in the Lagrangian functional of the NLS in order to form a quasi-one-dimensional azimuthal equation of motion, and then applying a stability analysis in Fourier space of the azimuthal modes. We formulate predictions of growth rates of individual modes and find that vortices are unstable below a critical azimuthal wave number. Steady state vortex solutio…
We investigate one-dimensional transverse modulational instability in a non local medium excited with a spatially incoherent source. Employing undoped nematic liquid crystals in a planar pre-tilted configuration, we investigate the role of the spectral broadening induced by incoherence in conjunction with the spatially non local molecular reorientation. The phenomenon is modeled using the Wigner transform.
We show that the use of a dispersion oscillating fiber in passive cavities significantly extend modulational instability to novel high-frequency bands, which also destabilize the branches of the steady response which are stable with homogeneous dispersion. By means of Floquet theory, we obtain exact explicit expression for the sideband gain, and a simple analytical estimate for the frequencies of maximum gain. Numerical simulations show that stable stationary trains of pulses can be excited in the cavity.
We investigate the modulational instability of plane waves in quadratic nonlinear materials with linear and nonlinear quasi-phase-matching gratings. Exact Floquet calculations, confirmed by numerical simulations, show that the periodicity can drastically alter the gain spectrum but never completely removes the instability. The low-frequency part of the gain spectrum is accurately predicted by an averaged theory and disappears for certain gratings. The high-frequency part is related to the inherent gain of the homogeneous non-phase-matched material and is a consistent spectral feature.
We introduce a complete analytical and numerical study of the modulational instability process in a system governed by a canonical nonlinear Schrödinger equation involving local, arbitrary nonlinear responses to the applied field. In particular, our theory accounts for the recently proposed higher-order Kerr nonlinearities, providing very simple analytical criteria for the identification of multiple regimes of stability and instability of plane-wave solutions in such systems. Moreover, we discuss a new parametric regime in the higher-order Kerr response which allows for the observation of seve…
We study on the relations between modulational instability and several well-known nonlinear excitations in a nonlinear fiber, such as bright soliton, nonlinear continuous wave, Akhmediev breather, Peregrine rogue wave, and Kuznetsov-Ma breather. We present a quantitative correspondence between them based on the dominant frequency and propagation constant of each perturbation on a continuous wave background. Especially, we find rogue wave comes from modulational instability under the "resonance" perturbation with continuous wave background. These results will deepen our understanding on rogue w…
We report water wave experiments performed in a long tank where we consider the evolution of nonlinear deep-water surface gravity waves with the envelope in the form of a large-scale rectangular barrier. Our experiments reveal that, for a range of initial parameters, the nonlinear wave packet is not disintegrated by the Benjamin-Feir instability but exhibits a specific, strongly nonlinear modulation, which propagates from the edges of the wavepacket towards the center with finite speed. Using numerical tools of nonlinear spectral analysis of experimental data we identify the observed envelope …
The modulational instability (MI) of plane waves in nonlocal Kerr media is studied for a general, localized, response function. It is shown that there always exists a finite number of well-separated MI gain bands, with each of them characterised by a unique maximal growth rate. This is a general property and is demonstrated here for the Gaussian, exponential, and rectangular response functions. In case of a focusing nonlinearity it is shown that although the nonlocality tends to suppress MI, it can never remove it completely, irrespectively of the particular shape of the response function. For…
The Whitham equation was proposed as a model for surface water waves that combines the quadratic flux nonlinearity $f(u) = \tfrac{1}{2}u^2$ of the Korteweg-de Vries equation and the full linear dispersion relation $Ω(k) = \sqrt{k\tanh k}$ of uni-directional gravity water waves in suitably scaled variables. This paper proposes and analyzes a generalization of Whitham's model to unidirectional nonlinear wave equations consisting of a general nonlinear flux function $f(u)$ and a general linear dispersion relation $Ω(k)$. Assuming the existence of periodic traveling wave solutions to this generali…
The modulational instability of waves in a medium under the action of an external monochromatic force and dissipation is considered. The model which describes the nonlinear stage of the modulation instability was constructed with using methods of so-called $S$-theory. Following this theory, we take into account only interactions between modes with slowly varying relative phases. Within framework of this model, it is shown that the waves satisfying the criterion of abnormality appears as a rule at the initial stage of the instability. With further development of the process, the abnormal waves …
We introduce the first principle model describing frequency comb generation in a WGM microresonator with the backscattering-induced coupling between the counter-propagating waves. {Elaborated model provides deep insight and accurate description of the complex dynamics of nonlinear processes in such systems.} We analyse the backscattering impact on the splitting and reshaping of the nonlinear resonances, demonstrate backscattering-induced modulational instability in the normal dispersion regime and subsequent frequency comb generation. We present and discuss novel features of the soliton comb d…
We show how the analytical approach of Zakharov and Rubenchik [Sov. Phys. JETP {\bf 38}, 494 (1974)] to modulational instability (MI) of solitary waves in the nonlinear Schröedinger equation (NLS) can be generalised for models with two phase symmetries. MI of three-wave parametric spatial solitons due to group velocity dispersion (GVD) is investigated as a typical example of such models. We reveal a new branch of neck instability, which dominates the usual snake type MI found for normal GVD. The resultant nonlinear evolution is thereby qualitatively different from cases with only a single phas…
We investigate the dynamics of two miscible superfluids experiencing fast counterflow in a narrow channel. The superfluids are formed by two distinguishable components of a trapped dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The onset of counterflow-induced modulational instability throughout the cloud is observed and shown to lead to the proliferation of dark-dark vector solitons. These solitons, which we observe for the first time in a BEC, do not exist in single-component systems, exhibit intriguing beating dynamics and can experience a transverse instability leading to vortex line structure…
We determine the stability and instability of a sufficiently small and periodic traveling wave to long wavelength perturbations, for a nonlinear dispersive equation which extends a Camassa-Holm equation to include all the dispersion of water waves and the Whitham equation to include nonlinearities of medium amplitude waves. In the absence of the effects of surface tension, the result qualitatively agrees with the Benjamin-Feir instability of a Stokes wave. In the presence of the effects of surface tension, it qualitatively agrees with those from formal asymptotic expansions of the physical pro…
The nonlinear stage of modulational instability in optical fibers induced by a wide and easily accessible class of localized perturbations is studied using the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. It is showed that the development of associated spatio-temporal patterns is strongly affected by the shape and the parameters of the perturbation. Different scenarios are presented that involve an auto-modulation developing in a characteristic wedge, possibly coexisting with breathers which lie inside or outside the wedge.
We demonstrate, analytically and numerically, that the ferromagnetic phase of the spinor Bose-Einstein condenstate may experience modulational instability of the ground state leading to a fragmentation of the spin domains. Together with other nonlinear effects in the atomic optics of ultra-cold gases (such as coherent photoassociation and four-wave mixing) this effect provides one more analogy between coherent matter waves and light waves in nonlinear optics.
Nonlinear systems can exhibit a rich set of dynamics that are inherently sensitive to their initial conditions. One such example is modulational instability, which is believed to be one of the most prevalent instabilities in nature. By exploiting a shallow zero-crossing of a Feshbach resonance, we characterize modulational instability and its role in the formation of matter-wave soliton trains from a Bose-Einstein condensate. We examine the universal scaling laws exhibited by the system, and through real-time imaging, address a long-standing question of whether the solitons in trains are creat…
We study the effective dynamics of ferromagnetic spin chains in presence of long-range interactions. We consider the Heisenberg Hamiltonian in one dimension for which the spins are coupled through power-law long-range exchange interactions with exponent $α$. We add to the Hamiltonian an anisotropy in the $z$-direction. In the framework of a semiclassical approach, we use the Holstein-Primakoff transformation to derive an effective long-range discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We then perform the continuum limit and we obtain a fractional nonlinear Schrödinger-like equation. Finally, we s…
We present the first experimental investigation of modulational instability in a layered Kerr medium. The particularly interesting and appealing feature of our configuration, consisting of alternating glass-air layers, is the piecewise-constant nature of the material properties, which allows a theoretical linear stability analysis leading to a Kronig-Penney equation whose forbidden bands correspond to the modulationally unstable regimes. We find very good {\it quantitative} agreement between theoretical, numerical, and experimental diagnostics of the modulational instability. Because of the pe…
Modulational instability of a uniform two-dimensional binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the presence of quantum fluctuations is studied. The analysis is based on the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. It is shown that quantum fluctuations can induce instability when the BEC density is below a threshold. The dependence of the growth rate of modulations on the BEC parameters is found. It is observed that an asymmetry of the interaction parameters and/or initial densities of the components typically decreases the growth rate. Further development of the instability results in a break-up of…
With reference to spatially non-local nematic liquid crystals, we develop a theory of optical spatial solitons and modulational instability in anisotropic media with arbitrarily large birefringence. Asymmetric spatial profiles and multivalued features are predicted for self-localized light versus walk-off angle. The results hold valid for generic self-focusing birefringent media and apply to large angle steering of individual and multiple self-trapped optical beams.
We consider the Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in optical lattice, which is formed from two kinds of deep potentials. The tight-binding approximation was used. Steady state distribution of the probability amplitudes and the site population in the one dimensional optical superlattice were found. It was shown that this solution of the equations which describe the dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensate in superlattice is unstable at the sufficiently high density of the bosons. The expression for increment of the modulational instability was found on base of the linear stability analysis. Nume…
The dynamics of an elongated attractive Bose-Einstein condensate in an axisymmetric harmonic trap is studied. It is shown that density fringes caused by self-interference of the condensate order parameter seed modulational instability. The latter has novel features in contradistinction to the usual homogeneous case known from nonlinear fiber optics. Several open questions in the interpretation of the recent creation of the first matter-wave bright soliton train [Strecker {\it et al.} Nature {\bf 417} 150 (2002)] are addressed. It is shown that primary transverse collapse, followed by secondary…
Quantum droplets are ultradilute liquid states which emerge from the competitive interplay of two Hamiltonian terms, the mean-field energy and beyond-mean-field correction, in a weakly interacting binary Bose gas. We relate the formation of droplets in symmetric and asymmetric two-component one-dimensional boson systems to the modulational instability of a spatially uniform state driven by the beyond-mean-field term. Asymmetry between the components may be caused by their unequal populations or unequal intra-component interaction strengths. Stability of both symmetric and asymmetric droplets i…
We study modulational instability (MI) in optical fibers with random group velocity dispersion (GVD) generated by sharply localized perturbations of a normal GVD fiber that are either randomly or periodically placed along the fiber and that have random strength. This perturbation leads to the appearance of low frequency MI side lobes that grow with the strength of the perturbations, whereas they are faded by randomness in their position. If the random perturbations exhibit a finite average value, they can be compared with periodically perturbed fibers, where Arnold tongues appear. In that case…
We present an analysis of modulational instability of diffractionless waves in a face-centered square lattice of waveguides featuring non-Kerr nonlinearity, which are constituted by a combination of positive and negative refractive indices. The unit cell of the lattice consists of three different waveguides with different optical properties. The dispersion curve of the lattice supports flat bands and thereby the base equations describing the model have particular solutions that correspond to the diffractionless waves propagating along the waveguides. We also observe a unique ramification of no…
We show that the phenomenon of modulational instability in arrays of Bose-Einstein condensates confined to optical lattices gives rise to coherent spatial structures of localized excitations. These excitations represent thin disks in 1D, narrow tubes in 2D, and small hollows in 3D arrays, filled in with condensed atoms of much greater density compared to surrounding array sites. Aspects of the developed pattern depend on the initial distribution function of the condensate over the optical lattice, corresponding to particular points of the Brillouin zone. The long-time behavior of the spatial s…
We present a detailed analysis of the modulational instability (MI) of ground-state bright solitary solutions of two incoherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Varying the relative strength of cross-phase and self-phase effects we show existence and origin of four branches of MI of the two-wave solitary solutions. We give a physical interpretation of our results in terms of the group velocity dispersion (GVD) induced polarization dynamics of spatial solitary waves. In particular, we show that in media with normal GVD spatial symmetry breaking changes to polarization symmetry breakin…
We investigate analytically, numerically, and experimentally the modulational instability in a layered, cubically-nonlinear (Kerr) optical medium that consists of alternating layers of glass and air. We model this setting using a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with a piecewise constant nonlinearity coefficient and conduct a theoretical analysis of its linear stability, obtaining a Kronig-Penney equation whose forbidden bands correspond to the modulationally unstable regimes. We find very good {\it quantitative} agreement between the theoretical analysis of the Kronig-Penney equation, num…
We employ a time-dependent mean-field-hydrodynamic model to study the generation of bright solitons in a degenerate fermion-fermion mixture in a cigar-shaped geometry using variational and numerical methods. Due to a strong Pauli-blocking repulsion among identical spin-polarized fermions at short distances there cannot be bright solitons for repulsive interspecies interactions. Employing a linear stability analysis we demonstrate the formation of stable solitons due to modulational instability of a constant-amplitude solution of the model equations for a sufficiently attractive interspecies in…
We study a one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger model with hopping to the first and a selected N-th neighbor, motivated by a helicoidal arrangement of lattice sites. We provide a detailed analysis of the modulational instability properties of this equation, identifying distinctive multi-stage instability cascades due to the helicoidal hopping term. Bistability is a characteristic feature of the intrinsically localized breather modes, and it is shown that information on the stability properties of weakly localized solutions can be inferred from the plane-wave modulational instability …
