Akhmediev and Kuznetsov-Ma breathers are rogue wave solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). Talbot effect (TE) is an image recurrence phenomenon in the diffraction of light waves. We report the nonlinear TE of rogue waves in a cubic medium. It is different from the linear TE, in that the wave propagates in a NL medium and is an eigenmode of NLSE. Periodic rogue waves impinging on a NL medium exhibit recurrent behavior, but only at the TE length and at the half-TE length with a π-phase shift; the fractional TE is absent. The NL TE is the result of the NL interference of the lobes of rogue wave breathers. This interaction is related to the transverse period and intensity of breathers, in that the bigger the period and the higher the intensity, the shorter the TE length.
We introduce two-dimensional (2D) linear and nonlinear Talbot effects. They are produced by propagating periodic 2D diffraction patterns and can be visualized as 3D stacks of Talbot carpets. The nonlinear Talbot effect originates from 2D rogue waves and forms in a bulk 3D nonlinear medium. The recurrences of an input rogue wave are observed at the Talbot length and at the half-Talbot length, with a πphase shift; no other recurrences are observed. Different from the nonlinear Talbot effect, the linear effect displays the usual fractional Talbot images as well. We also find that the smaller the …
We study discrete rogue waves in an array of nonlinear waveguides. We show that very small degree of disorder due to experimental imperfection has a deep effect on the formation of discrete rogue waves. We predict long-living discrete rogue wave solution of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation.
Weak phase noise present on an optical field can be amplified by a self-focusing nonlinearity and form intense "rogue wave" features. Here, we study the effect of the coherence length (or grain size) of this phase noise on the likelihood of rogue wave formation in the presence of a self-focusing nonlinearity. We show that while the likelihood of rogue wave formation increases with laser power when the coherence length is only slightly smaller that the beam diameter, the likelihood is minimally affected by change in laser power when the coherence length is significantly smaller than the beam di…
We predict the existence of linear discrete rogue waves governed by the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We discuss that Josephson effect is the underlying reason for the formation of such waves.
In this work, we have studied the peregrine rogue wave dynamics, with a solitons on finite background (SFB) ansatz, in the recently proposed (Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 064105) continuous nonlinear Schrodinger system with parity-time symmetric Kerr nonlinearity. We have found that the continuous nonlinear Schrodinger system with PT-symmetric nonlinearity also admits Peregrine Soliton solution. Motivated by the fact that Peregrine solitons are regarded as prototypical solutions of rogue waves, we have studied Peregrine rogue wave dynamics in the c-PTNLSE model. Upon numerical computation, we o…
Rogue waves (RWs) are unexpectedly strong excitations emerging from an otherwise tranquil background. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), a ubiquitous model with wide applications to fluid mechanics, optics and plasmas, exhibits RWs only in the regime of modulation instability (MI) of the background. For system of multiple waveguides, the governing coupled NLSEs can produce regimes of MI and RWs, even if each component has dispersion and cubic nonlinearity of opposite signs. A similar effect will be demonstrated for a system of coupled derivative NLSEs (DNLSEs), where the special featur…
In the present work, a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model is studied by means of a recent technique that identifies solutions of partial differential equations, by considering them as fixed points in {\it space-time}. This methodology allows to perform a continuation of well-known solutions of the local NLS model to the nonlocal case. Four different examples of this type are presented, namely (a) the rogue wave in the form of the Peregrine soliton, (b) the generalization thereof in the form of the Kuznetsov-Ma breather, as well as two spatio-temporally periodic solutions in the form of…
We present both theoretical description and experimental observation of the modulation instability process and related rogue breathers in the case of stationary periodic background waves, namely cnoidal and dnoidal envelopes. Despite being well-known solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the stability of such background waves has remained unexplored experimentally until now, unlike the fundamental plane wave. By means of two experimental setups, namely, in nonlinear optics and hydrodynamics, we report on quantitative measurements of spontaneous modulation instability gain seeded by …
We investigate two types of nonlinear interaction between collinear femtosecond laser pulses with power slightly above the critical for self-focusing $P_{cr}$. In the first case we study energy exchange between filaments. The model describes this process through degenerate four-photon parametric mixing (FPPM) scheme and requests initial phase difference between the waves. When there are no initial phase difference between the pulses, the FPPM process does not work. In this case it is obtained the second type of interaction as merging between two, three or four filaments in a single filament wi…
We study on the relations between modulational instability and several well-known nonlinear excitations in a nonlinear fiber, such as bright soliton, nonlinear continuous wave, Akhmediev breather, Peregrine rogue wave, and Kuznetsov-Ma breather. We present a quantitative correspondence between them based on the dominant frequency and propagation constant of each perturbation on a continuous wave background. Especially, we find rogue wave comes from modulational instability under the "resonance" perturbation with continuous wave background. These results will deepen our understanding on rogue w…
Breathers and rogue waves of special coupled nonlinear Schrödinger systems (the Manakov equations) are studied analytically. These systems model the orthogonal polarization modes in an optical fiber with randomly varying birefringence. Unlike the situation in a waveguide with zero birefringence, rogue waves can occur in these Manakov systems with dispersion and nonlinearity of opposite signs, provided that a group velocity mismatch is present. The criterion for the existence of rogue waves correlates exactly with the onset of modulation instability. Theoretically the Hirota bilinear transform …
We investigate rogue-wave solutions in a three-component coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation. With certain requirements on the backgrounds of components, we construct a multi-rogue-wave solution that exhibits a structure like a four-petaled flower in temporal-spatial distribution, in contrast to the eye-shaped structure in one-component or two-component systems. The results could be of interest in such diverse fields as Bose-Einstein condensates, nonlinear fibers, and superfluids.
This article addresses the question of general rogue-wave solutions in the nonlocal parity-time-symmetric nonlinear Schrodinger equation. By generalizing the previous bilinear Kadomtsev-Petviashvili reduction method, large classes of rogue waves are derived as Gram determinants with Schur polynomial elements. It is shown that these rogue waves contain previously reported ones as special cases. More importantly, they contain many new rogue wave families. It is conjectured that the rogue waves derived in this article are all rogue-wave solutions in the parity-time-symmetric nonlinear Schrodinger…
We explore the form of rogue wave solutions in a select set of case examples of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with variable coefficients. We focus on systems with constant dispersion, and present three different models that describe atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in different experimentally relevant settings. For these models, we identify exact rogue wave solutions. Our analytical findings are corroborated by direct numerical integration of the original equations, performed by two different schemes. Very good agreement between numerical results and analytical predictions for the emergence …
A new exactly solvable (1+1)-dimensional complex nonlinear wave equation exhibiting rich ana- lytic properties has been introduced. A rogue wave (RW), localized in space-time like Peregrine RW solution, though richer due to the presence of free parameters is discovered. This freedom allows to regulate amplitude and width of the RW as needed. The proposed equation allows also an intriguing topology changing accelerated dark soliton solution in spite of constant coefficients in the equation.
We construct vector rogue wave solutions of the two-dimensional two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with distributed coefficients, namely diffraction, nonlinearity and gain parameters through similarity transformation technique. We transform the two-dimensional two coupled variable coefficients nonlinear Schrödinger equations into Manakov equation with a constraint that connects diffraction and gain parameters with nonlinearity parameter. We investigate the characteristics of the constructed vector rogue wave solutions with four different forms of diffraction parameters. We report some…
The defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation has no the modulational instability, and was not found to possess the rogue wave (RW) phenomenon up to now. In this paper, we firstly investigate some novel nonlinear wave structures in the defocusing NLS equation with real-valued time-dependent and time-independent potentials such that the stable new RWs and W-shaped solitons are found, respectively. Moreover, the interactions of two or three RWs are explored such that the RWs with higher amplitudes are generated in the defocusing NLS equation with real-valued time-dependent potentials. Fina…
Rogue wave patterns in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are analytically studied. It is shown that when an internal parameter in the rogue waves (which controls the shape of initial weak perturbations to the uniform background) is large, these waves would exhibit clear geometric structures, which are formed by Peregrine waves in shapes such as triangle, pentagon, heptagon and nonagon, with a possible lower-order rogue wave at its center. These rogue patterns are analytically determined by the root structures of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomial hierarchy, and their orientations are controll…
Modulation instability, rogue wave and spectral analysis are investigated for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the higher-order terms. The modulation instability distribution characteristics from the sixth-order to the eighth-order nonlinear Schrodinger equations are studied. Higher-order dispersion terms are closely related to the distribution of modulation stability regime, and n-order dispersion term corresponds to $n-2$ modulation stability curves in the modulation instability band. Based on the generalized Darboux transformation method, the higher-order rational solutions are const…
In this paper, a variable-coefficient symbolic computation approach is proposed to solve the multiple rogue wave solutions of nonlinear equation with variable coefficients. As an application, a (2+1)-dimensional variable-coefficient Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation is investigated. The multiple rogue wave solutions are obtained and their dynamics features are shown in some 3D and contour plots.
We study localized nonlinear waves on a plane wave background in the multiple self-induced transparency (SIT) system, which describes an important enhancement of the amplification and control of optical waves compared to the single SIT system. A hierarchy of exact multiparametric rational solutions in a compact determinant representation are presented. We demonstrate that, this family of solutions contains known rogue wave solution and unusual W-shaped soliton solution, which strictly corresponds to the linear stability analysis that involves modulation instability and stability regimes in the…
We investigate the Zeno dynamics of the optical rogue waves. Considering their usage in modeling rogue wave dynamics, we analyze the Zeno dynamics of the Akhmediev breathers, Peregrine and Akhmediev-Peregrine soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We show that frequent measurements of the wave inhibits its movement in the observation domain for each of these solutions. We analyze the spectra of the rogue waves under Zeno dynamics. We also analyze the effect of observation frequency on the rogue wave profile and on the probability of lingering of the wave in the observation do…
Rogue waves in the nonlocal PT-symmetric nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation are studied by Darboux transformation. Three types of rogue waves are derived, and their explicit expressions in terms of Schur polynomials are presented. These rogue waves show a much wider variety than those in the local NLS equation. For instance, the polynomial degrees of their denominators can be not only $n(n+1)$, but also $n(n-1)+1$ and $n^2$, where $n$ is an arbitrary positive integer. Dynamics of these rogue waves is also examined. It is shown that these rogue waves can be bounded for all space and time, or …
We study on dynamics of high-order rogue wave in two-component coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Based on the generalized Darboux transformation and formal series method, we obtain the high-order rogue wave solution without the special limitation on the wave vectors. As an application, we exhibit the first, second-order rogue wave solution and the superposition of them by computer plotting. We find the distribution patterns for vector rogue waves are much more abundant than the ones for scalar rogue waves, and also different from the ones obtained with the constrain conditions on backgr…
We demonstrate a way to generate a two-dimensional rogue waves in two types of broad area nonlinear optical systems subject to time-delayed feedback: in the generic Lugiato-Lefever model and in model of a broad-area surface-emitting laser with saturable absorber. The delayed feedback is found to induce a spontaneous formation of rogue waves. In the absence of delayed feedback, spatial pulses are stationary. The rogue waves are exited and controlled by the delay feedback. We characterize their formation by computing the probability distribution of the pulse height. The long-tailed statistical c…
In the present work, we explore soliton and rogue-like wave solutions in the transmission line analogue of a nonlinear left-handed metamaterial. The nonlinearity is expressed through a voltagedependent and symmetric capacitance motivated by the recently developed ferroelectric barium strontium titanate (BST) thin film capacitor designs. We develop both the corresponding nonlinear dynamical lattice, as well as its reduction via a multiple scales expansion to a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model for the envelope of a given carrier wave. The reduced model can feature either a focusing or a defocus…
We construct Darboux transformation of a coupled generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (CGNLS) equations and obtain exact analytic expressions of breather and rogue wave solutions. We also formulate the conditions for isolating these solutions. We show that the rogue wave solution can be found only when the four wave mixing parameter becomes real. We also investigate the modulation instability of the steady state solution of CGNLS system and demonstrate that it can occur only when the four wave mixing parameter becomes real. Our results give an evidence for the connection between the occurrence of…
Extensive dynamical simulations are used to explore the possible existence of sudden sufficiently large energy or rogue fluctuations (RF) at late times and across short time windows in the {\it strongly nonlinear regime} of the $β$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) type systems. Our studies build on a study of RF in the non-dissipative granular chain system and suggest that {\it rare RF may be generic to non-integrable, strongly nonlinear systems at late enough times}. We comment on the role of initial conditions and the intriguing influence of harmonic forces on these strongly nonlinear systems…
In this paper, a simple and constructive method is presented to find the generalized perturbation (n,M)-fold Darboux transformations (DTs) of the modified nonlinear Schrodinger (MNLS) equation in terms of fractional forms of determinants. In particular, we apply the generalized perturbation (1,N-1)-fold DTs to find its explicit multi-rogue-wave solutions. The wave structures of these rogue-wave solutions of the MNLS equation are discussed in detail for different parameters, which display abundant interesting wave structures, including the triangle and pentagon, etc. and may be useful to study …
General rogue waves are derived for the generalized derivative nonlinear Schrodinger (GDNLS) equations by a bilinear Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) reduction method. These GDNLS equations contain the Kaup-Newell equation, the Chen-Lee-Liu equation and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation as special cases. In this bilinear framework, it is shown that rogue waves to all members of these equations are expressed by the same bilinear solution. Compared to previous bilinear KP reduction methods for rogue waves in other integrable equations, an important improvement in our current KP reduction procedure is a n…
We construct rogue wave solutions of a fifth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the Jacobian elliptic function background. By combining Darboux transformation and the nonlinearization of spectral problem, we generate rogue wave solution on two different periodic wave backgrounds. We analyze the obtained solutions for different values of system parameter and point out certain novel features of our results. We also compute instability growth rate of both $dn$ and $cn$ periodic background waves for the considered system through spectral stability problem. We show that instability growth rate…
We present exact solutions for rogue waves arising on the background of periodic waves in the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The exact solutions are obtained by characterizing the Lax spectrum related to the periodic waves and by using the one-fold Darboux transformation. The magnification factor of the rogue waves is computed in the closed analytical form. We relate the rogue wave solutions to the modulation instability of the periodic wave background.
We propose an alternative to the standard mechanisms for the formation of rogue waves in a non-conservative, nonlinear lattice dynamical system. We consider an ODE system that features regular periodic bursting arising from forced symmetry breaking. We then connect such potentially exploding units via a diffusive lattice coupling and investigate the resulting spatio-temporal dynamics for different types of initial conditions (localized or extended). We find that in both cases, particular oscillators undergo extremely fast and large amplitude excursions, resembling a rogue wave burst. Furthermo…
We derive the rogue wave solution of the classical massive Thirring model, that describes nonlinear optical pulse propagation in Bragg gratings. Combining electromagnetically induced transparency with Bragg scattering four-wave mixing, may lead to extreme waves at extremely low powers.
We consider a coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with modulated self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, and four-wave mixing nonlinearities and varying refractive index in anisotropic graded index nonlinear medium. By identifying an appropriate similarity transformation, we obtain a general localized wave solution and investigate their dynamics with a proper set of modulated nonlinearities. In particular, our study reveals different manifestations of localized waves such as stable solitons, Akhmediev breathers, Ma breathers, and rogue waves of bright, bright-dark, and dar…
Under investigation in this paper is the higherorder nonlinear Schrodinger and Maxwell-Bloch (HNLSMB) system which describes the wave propagation in an erbium-doped nonlinear fiber with higher-order effects including the fourth-order dispersion and quintic nonKerr nonlinearity. The breather and rogue wave (RW) solutions are shown that they can be converted into various soliton solutions including the multipeak soliton, periodic wave, antidark soliton, M-shaped soliton, and W-shaped soliton. In addition, under different values of higher-order effect, the locus of the eigenvalues on the complex …
We for the first time demonstrate that the widely existed nonlinear waves such as rogue waves, contain Dirac monopoles. We find that the density zeros of these nonlinear waves on an extended complex plane can constitute the Dirac virtual magnetic monopole fields with a quantized flux of elementary $π$. We then can explain the exotic property of ``appearing from nowhere and disappearing without a trace" of rogue waves by means of a Dirac monopole collision mechanism. The maximum amplification ratio and multiple phase steps of high-order rogue waves are found to be closely related to the number …
We study rogue wave excitation pattern in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with pair-transition effects. The results indicate that rogue wave excitation can exist on a stripe phase background for which there are cosine and sine wave background in the two components respectively. The rogue wave peak can be much lower than the ones of scalar matter wave rogue waves, and varies with the wave period changing. Both rogue wave pattern and rogue wave number on temporal-spatial plane are much more abundant than the ones reported before. Furthermore, we prove that the rogue wave number can be $…
We analytically study rogue-wave (RW) solutions and rational solitons of an integrable fifth-order nonlinear Schrödinger (FONLS) equation with three free parameters. It includes, as particular cases, the usual NLS, Hirota, and Lakshmanan-Porsezian-Daniel (LPD) equations. We present continuous-wave (CW) solutions and conditions for their modulation instability in the framework of this model. Applying the Darboux transformation to the CW input, novel first- and second-order RW solutions of the FONLS equation are analytically found. In particular, trajectories of motion of peaks and depressions o…
The spatially periodic breather solutions (SPBs) of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, prominent in modeling rogue waves, are unstable. In this paper we numerically investigate the effects of nonlinear dissipation and higher order nonlinearities on the routes to stability of the SPBs in the framework of the nonlinear damped higher order nonlinear Schrödinger (NLD-HONLS) equation. The initial data used in the experiments are generated by evaluating exact SPB solutions at time $T_0$. The number of instabilities of the background Stokes wave and the damping strength are varied. The Floquet spect…
We study the existence and properties of rogue wave solutions in different nonlinear wave evolution models that are commonly used in optics and hydrodynamics. In particular, we consider Fokas-Lenells equation, the defocusing vector nolinear Schrödinger equation, and the long-wave-short-wave resonance equation. We show that rogue wave solutions in all of these models exist in the subset of parameters where modulation instability is present, if and only if the unstable sideband spectrum also contains cw or zero-frequency perturbations as a limiting case (baseband instability). We numerically con…
In this paper, we numerically show and discuss the existence and characteristics of rogue heat and diffusion waves. More specifically, we use two different nonlinear heat (diffusion) models and show that modulation instability leads to the generation of unexpected and large fluctuations in the frame of these models. These fluctuations can be named as rogue heat (diffusion) waves. We discuss the properties and statistics of such rogue waves. Our results can find many important applications in many branches such as the nonlinear heat transfer, turbulence, financial mathematics, chemical or biolo…
We consider a two-level atomic system, interacting with an electromagnetic field controlled in amplitude and frequency by a high intensity laser. We show that the amplitude of the induced electric field, admits an envelope profile corresponding to a breather soliton. We demonstrate that this soliton can propagate with any frequency shift with respect to that of the control laser, except a critical frequency, at which the system undergoes a structural discontinuity that transforms the breather in a rogue wave. A mechanism of generation of rogue waves by means of an intense laser field is thus r…
