Modulation instability, rogue wave and spectral analysis are investigated for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the higher-order terms. The modulation instability distribution characteristics from the sixth-order to the eighth-order nonlinear Schrodinger equations are studied. Higher-order dispersion terms are closely related to the distribution of modulation stability regime, and n-order dispersion term corresponds to $n-2$ modulation stability curves in the modulation instability band. Based on the generalized Darboux transformation method, the higher-order rational solutions are constructed. Then the compact algebraic expression of the Nth-order rogue wave is given. Dynamic phenomena of first- to third-order rogue waves are illustrated, which exhibit meaningful structures. Two arbitrary parameters play important roles in the rogue wave solution. One can control deflection of crest of rogue wave and its width, while the other can cause the change of width and amplitude of rogue wave. When it comes to the third-order rogue wave, three typical nonlinear wave constructions, namely fundamental, circular and triangular are displayed and discussed. Through the spectral analysis on first-order rogue wave, when these parameters satisfy certain conditions, it occurs a transition between W-shaped soliton and rogue wave.
This article addresses the question of general rogue-wave solutions in the nonlocal parity-time-symmetric nonlinear Schrodinger equation. By generalizing the previous bilinear Kadomtsev-Petviashvili reduction method, large classes of rogue waves are derived as Gram determinants with Schur polynomial elements. It is shown that these rogue waves contain previously reported ones as special cases. More importantly, they contain many new rogue wave families. It is conjectured that the rogue waves derived in this article are all rogue-wave solutions in the parity-time-symmetric nonlinear Schrodinger…
In this work, inverse scattering transform for the sixth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with both zero and nonzero boundary conditions at infinity is given, respectively. For the case of zero nonzero boundary conditions, in terms of the Laurent's series and generalization of the residue theorem, the bound-state soliton is derived. For nonzero boundary conditions, using the robust inverse scattering transform, we present a matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem of the sixth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Then based on the obtained Riemann-Hilbert problem, the rogue wave and breather wave s…
We construct vector rogue wave solutions of the two-dimensional two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with distributed coefficients, namely diffraction, nonlinearity and gain parameters through similarity transformation technique. We transform the two-dimensional two coupled variable coefficients nonlinear Schrödinger equations into Manakov equation with a constraint that connects diffraction and gain parameters with nonlinearity parameter. We investigate the characteristics of the constructed vector rogue wave solutions with four different forms of diffraction parameters. We report some…
Rogue wave patterns in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are analytically studied. It is shown that when an internal parameter in the rogue waves (which controls the shape of initial weak perturbations to the uniform background) is large, these waves would exhibit clear geometric structures, which are formed by Peregrine waves in shapes such as triangle, pentagon, heptagon and nonagon, with a possible lower-order rogue wave at its center. These rogue patterns are analytically determined by the root structures of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomial hierarchy, and their orientations are controll…
We construct a generalized Darboux transformation (GDT) of a general coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (GCNLS) system. Using GDT method we derive a recursive formula and present determinant representations for N-th order rogue wave solution of this system. Using these representations we derive first, second and third order rogue wave solutions with certain free parameters. By varying these free parameters we demonstrate the formation of triplet, triangle and hexagonal patterns of rogue waves.
We study on dynamics of high-order rogue wave in two-component coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We find four fundamental rogue waves can emerge for second-order vector RW in the coupled system, in contrast to the high-order ones in single component systems. The distribution shape can be quadrilateral, triangle, and line structures through varying the proper initial excitations given by the exact analytical solutions. Moreover, six fundamental rogue wave can emerge on the distribution for second-order vector rogue wave, which is similar to the scalar third-order ones. The distribution p…
We construct breather and rogue wave solutions of a variable coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an external linear potential. This generalized model describes the nonlinear wave propagation in an inhomogeneous plasma/medium. We derive several localized solutions including Ma breather, Akhmediev breather, two-breather and rogue wave solutions of this model and show how the inhomogeneity of space modifies the shape and orientation of these localized structures. We also depict the trajectories of the inhomogeneous rogue wave. Our results may be useful for controlling plasmonic energy…
Rogue waves in the nonlocal PT-symmetric nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation are studied by Darboux transformation. Three types of rogue waves are derived, and their explicit expressions in terms of Schur polynomials are presented. These rogue waves show a much wider variety than those in the local NLS equation. For instance, the polynomial degrees of their denominators can be not only $n(n+1)$, but also $n(n-1)+1$ and $n^2$, where $n$ is an arbitrary positive integer. Dynamics of these rogue waves is also examined. It is shown that these rogue waves can be bounded for all space and time, or …
We construct Darboux transformation of a coupled generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (CGNLS) equations and obtain exact analytic expressions of breather and rogue wave solutions. We also formulate the conditions for isolating these solutions. We show that the rogue wave solution can be found only when the four wave mixing parameter becomes real. We also investigate the modulation instability of the steady state solution of CGNLS system and demonstrate that it can occur only when the four wave mixing parameter becomes real. Our results give an evidence for the connection between the occurrence of…
General rogue waves are derived for the generalized derivative nonlinear Schrodinger (GDNLS) equations by a bilinear Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) reduction method. These GDNLS equations contain the Kaup-Newell equation, the Chen-Lee-Liu equation and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation as special cases. In this bilinear framework, it is shown that rogue waves to all members of these equations are expressed by the same bilinear solution. Compared to previous bilinear KP reduction methods for rogue waves in other integrable equations, an important improvement in our current KP reduction procedure is a n…
We construct rogue wave solutions of a fifth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the Jacobian elliptic function background. By combining Darboux transformation and the nonlinearization of spectral problem, we generate rogue wave solution on two different periodic wave backgrounds. We analyze the obtained solutions for different values of system parameter and point out certain novel features of our results. We also compute instability growth rate of both $dn$ and $cn$ periodic background waves for the considered system through spectral stability problem. We show that instability growth rate…
We consider a coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with modulated self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, and four-wave mixing nonlinearities and varying refractive index in anisotropic graded index nonlinear medium. By identifying an appropriate similarity transformation, we obtain a general localized wave solution and investigate their dynamics with a proper set of modulated nonlinearities. In particular, our study reveals different manifestations of localized waves such as stable solitons, Akhmediev breathers, Ma breathers, and rogue waves of bright, bright-dark, and dar…
We study on dynamics of high-order rogue wave in two-component coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Based on the generalized Darboux transformation and formal series method, we obtain the high-order rogue wave solution without the special limitation on the wave vectors. As an application, we exhibit the first, second-order rogue wave solution and the superposition of them by computer plotting. We find the distribution patterns for vector rogue waves are much more abundant than the ones for scalar rogue waves, and also different from the ones obtained with the constrain conditions on backgr…
We propose a novel, analytically tractable, scenario of the rogue wave formation in the framework of the small-dispersion focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with the initial condition in the form of a rectangular barrier (a "box"). We use the Whitham modulation theory combined with the nonlinear steepest descent for the semi-classical inverse scattering transform, to describe the evolution and interaction of two counter-propagating nonlinear wave trains --- the dispersive dam break flows --- generated in the NLS box problem. We show that the interaction dynamics results in the emerg…
We show that universal rogue wave patterns exist in integrable systems. These rogue patterns comprise fundamental rogue waves arranged in shapes such as triangle, pentagon and heptagon, with a possible lower-order rogue wave at the center. These patterns appear when one of the internal parameters in bilinear expressions of rogue waves gets large. Analytically, these patterns are determined by the root structures of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomial hierarchy through a linear transformation. Thus, the induced rogue patterns in the space-time plane are simply the root structures of Yablonskii-V…
The height of an $n$th-order fundamental rogue wave $q_{\rm rw}^{[n]}$ for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, namely $(2n+1)c$, is proved directly by a series of row operations on matrices appeared in the $n$-fold Darboux transformation. Here the positive constant $c$ denotes the height of the asymptotical plane of the rogue wave.
In this paper, we construct a generalized Darboux transformation for nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The associated $N$-fold Darboux transformation is given both in terms of a summation formula and in terms of determinants. As applications, we obtain compact representations for the $N$-th order rogue wave solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation and Hirota equation. In particular, the dynamics of the general third order rogue wave is discussed and shown to exhibit interesting structure.
In this letter, the designable integrability(DI) of the variable coefficient derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation (VCDNLSE) is shown by construction of an explicit transformation which maps VCDNLSE to the usual derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation(DNLSE). One novel feature of VCDNLSE with DI is that its coefficients can be designed artificially and analytically by using transformation. What is more, from the rogue wave and rational traveling solution of the DNLSE, we get two kinds of rogue waves of the VCDNLSE by this transformation. One kind of rogue wave has vanishing boundary condi…
General higher order rogue waves of a vector nonlinear Schrodinger equation (Manakov system) are derived using a Darboux-dressing transformation with an asymptotic expansion method. The Nth order semi-rational solutions containing 3N free parameters are expressed in separation of variables form. These solutions exhibit rogue waves on a multisoliton background. They demonstrate that the structure of rogue waves in this two-component system is richer than that in a one-component system. The study of our results would be of much importance in understanding and predicting rogue wave phenomena aris…
We present exact solutions for rogue waves arising on the background of periodic waves in the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The exact solutions are obtained by characterizing the Lax spectrum related to the periodic waves and by using the one-fold Darboux transformation. The magnification factor of the rogue waves is computed in the closed analytical form. We relate the rogue wave solutions to the modulation instability of the periodic wave background.
We investigate the nonisospectral effects of a semi-discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which is a direct integrable discretisation of its continuous counterpart. Bilinear form and double casoratian solution of the equation are presented. Dynamics of solutions are analyzed. Both solitons and multiple pole solutions admit space-time localized rogue wave behavior. And more interestingly, the solutions allow blow-up at finite time $t$.
The double-periodic solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation have been previously obtained by the method of separation of variables. We construct these solutions by using an algebraic method with two eigenvalues. Furthermore, we characterize the Lax spectrum for the double-periodic solutions and analyze rogue waves arising on their background. Magnification of the rogue waves is studied numerically.
In the present paper, we attempt to construct both the general rogue wave solutions to the fully discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (fd-NLS) equation via the KP-Toda reduction method. First, we deduce the general breather solution of the fd-NLS equation starting from a pair of bilinear equations. We then derive the general rogue wave solution by taking a limit to the breather solution.
We construct dark-dark solitons, general breather (GB), Akhmediev breather (AB), Ma soliton (MS) and rogue wave (RW) solutions of a coupled generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (CGNLS) equation. While the dark-dark solitons are captured in the defocusing regime of CGNLS system, the other solutions, namely GB, AB, MS and RW, are identified in the focusing regime. We also analyze the structures of GB, AB, MS and RW profiles with respect to the four-wave mixing parameter. We show that when we increase the value of the real part of the four wave mixing parameter, the number of peaks in the breather p…
In the present investigation, the solutions on the periodic and double-periodic background are successfully constructed by Darboux transformation using a plane wave seed solution. Firstly, the Darboux transformation for the reverse-space-time DNLS equation is constructed. Secondly, periodic solutions, breathers, double-periodic solutions, breathers on the periodic background and double-periodic background are studied. Thirdly, the higher-order rogue waves on the periodic and double-periodic background are constructed by semi-degenerate Darboux transformations. In addition, the dynamic behavior…
The nonlinear Schrodinger equation is a classical integrable equation which contains plenty of significant properties and occurs in many physical areas. However, due to the difficulty of solving this equation, in particular in high dimensions, lots of methods are proposed to effectively obtain different kinds of solutions, such as neural networks, among others. Recently, a method where some underlying physical laws are embeded into a conventional neural network is proposed to uncover the equation's dynamical behaviors from spatiotemporal data directly. Compared with traditional neural networks…
Rogue wave patterns in the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation and the derivative NLS equation are analytically studied. It is shown that when the free parameters in the analytical expressions of these rogue waves are large, these waves would exhibit the same patterns, comprising fundamental rogue waves forming clear geometric structures such as triangle, pentagon, heptagon and nonagon, with a possible lower-order rogue wave at its center. These rogue patterns are analytically determined by the root structures of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomial hierarchy, and their orientations are control…
In this paper, a simple and constructive method is presented to find the generalized perturbation (n,M)-fold Darboux transformations (DTs) of the modified nonlinear Schrodinger (MNLS) equation in terms of fractional forms of determinants. In particular, we apply the generalized perturbation (1,N-1)-fold DTs to find its explicit multi-rogue-wave solutions. The wave structures of these rogue-wave solutions of the MNLS equation are discussed in detail for different parameters, which display abundant interesting wave structures, including the triangle and pentagon, etc. and may be useful to study …
In this paper, using the Darboux transformation, we demonstrate the generation of first order breather and higher-order rogue waves from a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation with several higher-order nonlinear effects representing femtosecond pulse propagation through nonlinear silica fiber. The same nonlinear evolution equation can also describes the soliton-type nonlinear excitations in classical Heisenberg spin chain. Such solutions have a parameter $γ_1$, denoting the strength of the higher-order effects. From the numerical plots of the rational solutions, the compression effects o…
We derive the two-breather solution of the class I infinitely extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). We present a general form of this multi-parameter solution that includes infinitely many free parameters of the equation and free parameters of the two breather components. Particular cases of this solution include rogue wave triplets, and special cases of breather-to-soliton and rogue wave-to-soliton transformations. The presence of many parameters in the solution allows one to describe wave propagation problems with higher accuracy than with the use of the basic NLSE.
In this article, we derive rogue wave (RW) solutions of a fifth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation over a double-periodic wave background. Choosing the elliptic functions (combinations of $cn$, $dn$ and $sn$) as seed solutions in the first iteration of Darboux transformation and utilizing the nonlinearization of Lax pair procedure, we create the double-periodic wave background for the fifth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation. By introducing the second linearly independent solution, we generate the RW solutions on the created background for three different eigenvalues. We demonstrate the di…
A rogue wave formation mechanism is proposed within the framework of a coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (CNLS) system corresponding to the interaction of two waves propagating in oblique directions in deep water. A rogue condition is introduced that links the angle of interaction with the group velocities of these waves: different angles of interaction can result in a major enhancement of rogue events in both numbers and amplitude. For a range of interacting directions it is found that the CNLS system exhibits significantly more extreme wave amplitude events than its scalar counterpart. Furthermo…

The third-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation (alias the Hirota equation) is investigated via deep leaning neural networks, which describes the strongly dispersive ion-acoustic wave in plasma and the wave propagation of ultrashort light pulses in optical fibers, as well as broader-banded waves on deep water. In this paper, we use the physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) deep learning method to explore the data-driven solutions (e.g., soliton, breather, and rogue waves) of the Hirota equation when the two types of the unperturbated and unperturbated (a 2% noise) training data are considere…
Modulational instability has been used to explain the formation of breather and rogue waves qualitatively. In this paper, we show modulational instability can be used to explain the structure of them in a quantitative way. We develop a method to derive general forms for Akhmediev breather and rogue wave solutions in a $N$-component nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The existence condition for each pattern is clarified clearly. Moreover, the general multi-high-order rogue wave solutions and multi-Akhmediev breather solutions for $N$-component nonlinear Schrödinger equations are constructed. The …
The Peregrine soliton is often considered as a prototype of the rogue waves. After recent advances in the semi-classical limit of the 1-D focusing Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation this conjecture can be seen from another perspective. In the present paper, connecting deterministic and statistical approaches, we numerically demonstrate the effect of the universal local appearance of Peregrine solitons on the evolution of statistical properties of random waves. Evidences of this effect are found in recent experimental studies in the contexts of fiber optics and hydrodynamics. The present appr…
In this paper, by considering the potential application in two mode nonlinear waves in nonlinear fibers under a certain case, we define a coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation(called Frobenius NLS equation) including its Lax pair. Afterwards, we construct the Darboux transformations of the Frobenius NLS equation. New solutions can be obtained from known seed solutions by the Dardoux transformations. Soliton solutions are generated from trivial seed solutions. Also we derive breather solutions $q,r$ of the Frobenius NLS equation obtained from periodic seed solutions. Interesting enough, we fin…
The extreme events are investigated for an $n$-component nonlinear Schrödinger ($n$-NLS) system in the focusing Kerr-like nonlinear media, which appears in many physical fields. We report and discuss the novel multi-parametric families of vector rational rogue wave (RW) solutions featuring the parity-time (PT) symmetry, which are characterized by non-identical boundary conditions for the components, and consistent with the degeneracy of $n$ branches of Benjamin-Feir instability. Explicit examples of PT-symmetric vector RWs are presented. Some parameter constraints can make some components gene…
In this paper, we study the general rogue wave solutions and their patterns in the vector (or $M$-component) nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. By applying the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy reduction method, we derived an explicit solution for the rogue wave expressed by $τ$ functions that are determinants of $K\times K$ block matrices ($K=1,2,\cdots, M$) with an index jump of $M+1$. Patterns of the rogue waves for $M=3,4$ and $K=1$ are thoroughly investigated. We find that when a specific internal parameter is large enough, the wave patterns are linked to the root structures of generali…
We first report the first- and higher-order vector Peregrine solitons (alias rational rogue waves) for the any multi-component NLS equations based on the loop group theory, an explicit (n + 1)-multiple eigenvalue of a characteristic polynomial of degree (n + 1) related to the condition of Benjamin-Feir instability, and inverse functions. Particularly, these vector rational rogue waves are parity-time symmetric for some parameter constraints. A systematic and effective approach is proposed to study the asymptotic behaviors of these vector rogue waves such that the decompositions of rogue waves …
We construct the multi-breather solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) on the background of elliptic functions by the Darboux transformation, and express them in terms of the determinant of theta functions. The dynamics of the breathers in the presence of various kinds of backgrounds such as dn, cn, and non-trivial phase-modulating elliptic solutions are presented, and their behaviors dependent on the effect of backgrounds are elucidated. We also determine the asymptotic behaviors for the multi-breather solutions with different velocities in the limit $t\to\pm\infty$, …
The higher-order dispersive and nonlinear effects (alias {\it the perturbation terms}) like the third-order dispersion, the self-steepening, and the self-frequency shift play important roles in the study of the ultra-short optical pulse propagation. We consider optical rogue wave solutions and interactions for the generalized higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with space- and time-modulated parameters. A proper transformation is presented to reduce the generalized higher-order NLS equation to the integrable Hirota equation with constant coefficients. This transformation allows u…
We present determinant expressions for vector rogue wave solutions of the Manakov system, a two-component coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation. As special case, we generate a family of exact and non-symmetric rogue wave solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation up to third-order, localized in both space and time. The derived non-symmetric doubly-localized second-order solution is generated experimentally in a water wave flume for deep-water conditions. Experimental results, confirming the characteristic non-symmetric pattern of the solution, are in very good agreement with theory as we…
The the mixed Chen-Lee-Liu derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation (CLL-NLS) can be considered as simplest model to approximate the dynamics of weakly nonlinear and dispersive waves, taking into account the self-steepnening effect (SSE). The latter effect arises as a higher-order correction of the nonlinear Schrördinger equation (NLS), which is known to describe the dynamics of pulses in nonlinear fiber optics, and constiutes a fundamental part of the generalized NLS. Similar effects are decribed within the framework of the modified NLS, also referred to as the Dysthe equation, in hydrodynam…
The research of the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation (DNLS) has attracted more and more extensive attention in theoretical analysis and physical application. The improved physicsinformed neural network (IPINN) approach with neuron-wise locally adaptive activation function is presented to derive the data-driven localized wave solutions, which contain rational solution, soliton solution, rogue wave, periodic wave and rogue periodic wave for the DNLS with initial and boundary conditions in complex space. Especially, the data-driven periodic wave and rogue periodic wave of the DNLS are in…
Rogue waves in birefringent optical fibers are analyzed within the framework of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) system. The generation of rogue waves is frequently associated with modulation instability (MI). It is commonly expected that since the CNLS equations exhibit larger growth rates they should also produce more rogue events than their scalar counterparts. This is found to occur only when both equations are focusing. When at least one component is defocusing, the CNLS equations may still exhibit larger growth rates, compared to the scalar system, but that does not necessarily r…
We construct spatiotemporal localized envelope solutions of a (3+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with varying coefficients such as dispersion, nonlinearity and gain parameters through similarity transformation technique. The obtained localized rational solutions can serve as prototypes of rogue waves in different branches of science. We investigate the characteristics of constructed localized solutions in detail when it propagates through six different dispersion profiles, namely constant, linear, Gaussian, hyperbolic, logarithm and exponential. We also obtain expressions for the…
The generation of rogue waves is investigated via a nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. In this system, modulation instability is suppressed and is usually expected that rogue wave formation would also be limited. On the contrary, a parameter regime is identified where the instability is suppressed but nevertheless the number and amplitude of the rogue events increase, as compared to the standard NLS (which is a limit of the nonlocal system). Furthermore, the nature of these waves is investigated; while no analytical solutions are known to model these events, numerically it is shown…
We report and discuss analytical solutions of the vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation that describe rogue waves in the defocusing regime. This family of solutions includes bright-dark and dark-dark rogue waves. The link between modulational instability (MI) and rogue waves is displayed by showing that only a peculiar kind of MI, namely baseband MI, can sustain rogue wave formation. The existence of vector rogue waves in the defocusing regime is expected to be a crucial progress in explaining extreme waves in a variety of physical scenarios described by multi-component systems, from oceanogra…
We study the fundamental rogue wave solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the limit of large order. Using a recently-proposed Riemann-Hilbert representation of the rogue wave solution of arbitrary order $k$, we establish the existence of a limiting profile of the rogue wave in the large-$k$ limit when the solution is viewed in appropriate rescaled variables capturing the near-field region where the solution has the largest amplitude. The limiting profile is a new particular solution of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the rescaled variables --- the rogue wav…
In this paper, we construct a generalized recursive Darboux transformation of a focusing vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation known as the Manakov system. We apply this generalized recursive Darboux transformation to the Lax-pairs of this system in view of generating the Nth-order vector generalization rogue wave solutions with the same spectral parameter through a direct iteration rule. As a result, we discuss the first, second and third-order vector generalization rogue wave solutions while illustrating these features with some depictions. We show that higher-order rogue wave solutions depe…
