We offer a fractonic perspective on a familiar observation -- a flat sheet of paper can be folded only along a straight line if one wants to avoid the creation of additional creases or tears. Our core underlying technical result is the establishment of a duality between the theory of elastic plates and a fractonic gauge theory with a second rank symmetric electric field tensor, a scalar magnetic field, a vector charge, and a symmetric tensor current. Bending moment and momentum of the plate are dual to the electric and magnetic fields, respectively. While the flexural waves correspond to the quadratically dispersing photon of the gauge theory, a fold defect is dual to its vector charge. Crucially, the fractonic condition constrains the latter to move only along its direction, i.e., the fold's growth direction. By contrast, fracton motion in the perpendicular direction amounts to tearing the paper.

In this work we explore the interplay between global symmetry and the mobility of quasiparticle excitations. We show that fractonic matter naturally appears in a three dimensional U(1) gauge theory, enriched by global U(1) and translational symmetries, via the mechanism of anyonic spin-orbital coupling. We develop a systematic understanding of such symmetry-enforced mobility restrictions in terms of the classification of U(1) gauge theories enriched by U(1) and translational symmetries. We provide a unified construction of these phases by gauging layered symmetry-protected topological phases.
2+1D multi-component $U(1)$ gauge theories with a Chern-Simons (CS) term provide a simple and complete characterization of 2+1D Abelian topological orders. In this paper, we extend the theory by taking the number of component gauge fields to infinity and find that they can describe interesting types of 3+1D "fractonic" order. "Fractonic" describes the peculiar phenomena that point excitations in certain strongly interacting systems either cannot move at all or are only allowed to move in a lower dimensional sub-manifold. In the simplest cases of infinite-component CS gauge theory, different co…
We consider fermionic systems in which fermion parity is conserved within rigid subsystems, and describe an explicit procedure for gauging such subsystem fermion parity symmetries to obtain bosonic spin Hamiltonians. We show that gauging planar or fractal subsystem fermion parity symmetry in three spatial dimensions gives rise to a plethora of exactly solvable spin models exhibiting novel gapped fractonic orders characterized by emergent fermionic gauge theory. The low energy excitations of these models include fractional quasiparticles with constrained mobility and emergent fermionic statisti…
We propose a superfluid phase of ``many-fracton system'' in which charge and total dipole moments are conserved quantities. In this work, both microscopic model and long-wavelength effective theory are analyzed. We start with a second quantized microscopic model and formulate the coherent-state path-integral representation. With repulsive interactions and positive chemical potential, we calculate various properties of the resulting superfluid state and make comparison with a conventional superfluid. We deduce a highly nonlinear Euler-Lagrange equation as well as two Noether currents. We also f…
We demonstrate the existence of a fundamentally new type of excitation, fractonic lines, which are line-like excitations with the restricted mobility properties of fractons. These excitations, described using an amalgamation of higher-form gauge theories with symmetric tensor gauge theories, see direct physical realization as the topological lattice defects of ordinary three-dimensional quantum crystals. Starting with the more familiar elasticity theory, we show how it maps onto a rank-4 tensor gauge theory, with phonons corresponding to gapless gauge modes and disclination defects correspondi…
Fracton order is an intriguing new type of order which shares many common features with topological order, such as topology-dependent ground state degeneracies, and excitations with mutual statistics. However, it also has several distinctive geometrical aspects, such as excitations with restricted mobility, which naturally lead to effective descriptions in terms of higher rank gauge fields. In this paper, we investigate possible effective field theories for 3D fracton order, by presenting a general philosophy whereby topological-like actions for such higher-rank gauge fields can be constructed…
In this work, we present a collection of three-dimensional higher-order symmetry protected topological phases (HOSPTs) with gapless hinge modes that exist only in strongly interacting systems subject to subsystem symmetry constraints. We use a coupled wire construction to generate three families of microscopic lattice models: insulators with helical hinge modes, superconductors with chiral Majorana hinge modes, and fractionalized insulators with helical hinge modes that carry fractional charge. In particular, these HOSPTs do not require spatial symmetry protection, but are instead protected by…
Fractons are emergent particles which are immobile in isolation, but which can move together in dipolar pairs or other small clusters. These exotic excitations naturally occur in certain quantum phases of matter described by tensor gauge theories. Previous research has focused on the properties of small numbers of fractons and their interactions, effectively mapping out the "Standard Model" of fractons. In the present work, however, we consider systems with a finite density of either fractons or their dipolar bound states, with a focus on the $U(1)$ fracton models. We study some of the phases …
We describe topologically ordered and fracton ordered states on novel geometries which do not have an underlying manifold structure. Using tree graphs such as the $k$-coordinated Bethe lattice ${\cal B}(k)$ and a hypertree called the $(k,n)$-hyper-Bethe lattice ${\cal HB}(k,n)$ consisting of $k$-coordinated hyperlinks (defined by $n$ sites), we construct multidimensional arboreal arenas such as ${\cal B}(k_1) \square {\cal B}(k_2)$ by the notion of a graph Cartesian product $\square$. We study various quantum systems such as the ${\mathbb Z}_2$ gauge theory, generalized quantum Ising models (G…
Following our earlier analyses of nonstandard continuum quantum field theories, we study here gapped systems in 3+1 dimensions, which exhibit fractonic behavior. In particular, we present three dual field theory descriptions of the low-energy physics of the X-cube model. A key aspect of our constructions is the use of discontinuous fields in the continuum field theory. Spacetime is continuous, but the fields are not.
We consider close-packed tiling models of geometric objects -- a mixture of hardcore dimers and plaquettes -- as a generalisation of the familiar dimer models. Specifically, on an anisotropic cubic lattice, we demand that each site be covered by either a dimer on a z-link or a plaquette in the x-y plane. The space of such fully packed tilings has an extensive degeneracy. This maps onto a fracton-type `higher-rank electrostatics', which can exhibit a plaquette-dimer liquid and an ordered phase. We analyse this theory in detail, using height representations and T-duality to demonstrate that the …
Motivated by the prediction of fractonic topological defects in a quantum crystal, we utilize a reformulated elasticity duality to derive a description of a fracton phase in terms of coupled vector U(1) gauge theories. The fracton order and restricted mobility emerge as a result of an unusual Gauss law where electric field lines of one gauge field act as sources of charge for others. At low energies this vector gauge theory reduces to the previously studied fractonic symmetric tensor gauge theory. We construct the corresponding lattice model and a number of generalizations, which realize fract…
Motivated by striped correlated quantum matter, and the recently developed duality between elasticity of a two-dimensional (2D) crystal and a gauge theory, we derive a dual coupled U(1) vector gauge theory for a two-dimensional (2D) quantum smectic, where the disclination is mapped onto the fractonic charge, that we demonstrate can only move transversely to smectic layers. This smectic gauge theory dual also emerges from a gauge dual of a quantum crystal after a Higgs transition corresponding to a single flavor of its dipole condensation, an anisotropic quantum melting via dislocation prolifer…
Fractons are particles with restricted mobility. We give a symmetry-based derivation of effective field theories of gapless phases with fractonic topological defects, such as solids and supersolids, using a coset construction. The resulting theory is identified as the Cosserat elasticity theory, which reproduces the conventional symmetric elasticity theory at low energies. The construction can be viewed as a dynamical realization of the inverse Higgs mechanism. We incorporate topological defects such as dislocations and disclinations, which are nontrivially related by the Bianchi identities of…
We analyze, in perturbation theory, a theory of weakly interacting fractons and non-relativistic fermions in a 2+1 dimensional Quantum Field Theory. In particular we compute the 1-loop corrections to the self energies and interaction vertex, and calculate the associated 1-loop Renormalization Group flows of the coupling constants. Surprisingly, we find that the fracton-fermion coupling does not flow due to an emergent coordinate-dependent symmetry of the effective Lagrangian, making this model a well-defined quantum field theory. We provide additional discussions on the regularization and reno…

We investigate two dimensional compactifications of three dimensional fractonic stabilizer models. We find the two dimensional topological phases produced as a function of compactification radius for the X-cube model and Haah's cubic code. Furthermore, we uncover translation symmetry-enrichment in the compactified cubic code that leads to twisted boundary conditions.
Elastic description of planar quasicrystals can be formulated as an interplay between two Goldstone fields corresponding to phonon and phason degrees of freedom. We reformulate this description as a gauge theory with one gauge field that is symmetric under exchange of indices and one that is not. We also show which topological defects in quasicrystals can be succinctly incorporated in the dual description and interpret them as fractonic excitations. Finally we calculate the static interaction potential between defects in a quasicrystal with fivefold symmetry. This is done in the limit of a sma…
An iterative Noether scheme, advocated by Deser, is used to introduce gauge invariant couplings to nonrelativistic matter with global symmetries related to usual charge conservation and dipole conservation recently discussed in fractonic theories. No reference to any gauge principle, fractonic or otherwise, is required. A dual description is found where the theory is defined either in terms of the usual vector gauge field or, alternatively, in terms of higher derivatives of a symmetric tensor field. A connection between these two descriptions is obtained by providing an explicit map between th…
The Chamon model is an exactly solvable spin Hamiltonian exhibiting nontrivial fracton order. In this work, we dissect two distinct aspects of the model. First, we show that it exhibits an emergent fractonic gauge theory coupled to a fermionic subsystem symmetry-protected topological state under four stacks of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ planar symmetries. Second, we show that the Chamon model hosts 4-foliated fracton order by describing an entanglement renormalization group transformation that exfoliates four separate stacks of 2D toric codes from the bulk system.
We revisit a model for gapped fractonic order in (2+1) dimensions (a symmetric-traceless tensor gauge theory with conservation of dipole and trace-quadrupole moments described in \cite{Prem:2017kxc}) and compute its ground-state entanglement entropy on $\mathbb R^2$. Along the way, we quantize the theory on open subsets of $\mathbb R^2$ which gives rise to gapless edge excitations that are Lifshitz-type scalar theories. We additionally explore varieties of gauge-invariant extended operators and rephrase the fractonic physics in terms of the local deformability of these operators. We explore si…
We study the concomitant breaking of spatial translations and dilatations in Ginzburg-Landau-like models, where the dynamics responsible for the symmetry breaking is described by an effective Mexican hat potential for spatial gradients. We show that there are fractonic modes with either subdimensional propagation or no propagation altogether, namely, immobility. Such class of effective field theories encompasses instances of helical superfluids and meta-fluids, where fractons can be connected to an emergent symmetry under higher moment charges, leading in turns to the trivialization of some el…
We initiate a systematic study of fracton physics within the geometric framework of Double Field Theory. We ascribe the immobility and large degeneracy of the former to the non-Riemannian backgrounds of the latter, in terms of generalised geodesics and infinite-dimensional isometries. A doubled pure Yang-Mills or Maxwell theory reduces to an ordinary one coupled to a strain tensor of elasticity theory, and thus rather remarkably provides a unifying description of photons and phonons. Upon a general Double Field Theory background, which consists of Riemannian and non-Riemannian subspaces, the d…
We consider XY-spin degrees of freedom on an FCC lattice, such that the system respects some subsystem global symmetry. We then gauge this global symmetry and study the corresponding $U(1)$ gauge theory on the FCC lattice. Surprisingly, this $U(1)$ gauge theory is dual to the original spin system. We also analyze a similar $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge theory on that lattice. All these systems are fractonic. The $U(1)$ theories are gapless and the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ theories are gapped. We analyze the continuum limits of all these systems and present free continuum Lagrangians for their low-energy physics.…
Fractons and other subdimensional particles are an exotic class of emergent quasi-particle excitations with severely restricted mobility. A wide class of models featuring these quasi-particles have a natural description in the language of symmetric tensor gauge theories, which feature conservation laws restricting the motion of particles to lower-dimensional sub-spaces, such as lines or points. In this work, we investigate the fate of symmetric tensor gauge theories in the presence of spatial curvature. We find that weak curvature can induce small (exponentially suppressed) violations on the m…
The emerging study of fractons, a new type of quasi-particle with restricted mobility, has motivated the construction of several classes of interesting continuum quantum field theories with novel properties. One such class consists of foliated field theories which, roughly, are built by coupling together fields supported on the leaves of foliations of spacetime. Another approach, which we refer to as exotic field theory, focuses on constructing Lagrangians consistent with special symmetries (like subsystem symmetries) that are adjacent to fracton physics. A third framework is that of infinite-…
The objective of the present work -- a literature review on both gapped and gapless fractonic theories -- is to pedagogically fill in the gaps between the research on fractons, and an undergraduate physics education (particularly quantum and statistical mechanics). Some familiarity with classical field theory is assumed. We will begin this work by reviewing the gauging of the Ising model to obtain the toric code. Then, following the chronological order of fracton research, we will establish the gauged spin model picture of gapped fracton theories. Next (after introducing lattice gauge theory) …
We study complex scalar theories with dipole symmetry and uncover a no-go theorem that governs the structure of such theories and which, in particular, reveals that a Gaussian theory with linearly realised dipole symmetry must be Carrollian. The gauging of the dipole symmetry via the Noether procedure gives rise to a scalar gauge field and a spatial symmetric tensor gauge field. We construct a worldline theory of mobile objects that couple gauge invariantly to these gauge fields. We systematically develop the canonical theory of a dynamical symmetric tensor gauge field and arrive at scalar cha…
We use the Higgs mechanism to investigate connections between higher-rank symmetric $U(1)$ gauge theories and gapped fracton phases. We define two classes of rank-2 symmetric $U(1)$ gauge theories: the $(m,n)$ scalar and vector charge theories, for integer $m$ and $n$, which respect the symmetry of the square (cubic) lattice in two (three) spatial dimensions. We further provide local lattice rotor models whose low energy dynamics are described by these theories. We then describe in detail the Higgs phases obtained when the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken to a discrete subgroup. A…
Recent discussions of higher rank symmetric (fractonic) gauge theories have revealed the important role of Gauss constraints. This has prompted the present study where a detailed hamiltonian analysis of such theories is presented. Besides a general treatment, the traceless scalar charge theory is considered in details. A new form for the action is given which, in 2+1 dimensions, yields area preserving diffeomorphisms. Investigation of global symmetries reveals that this diffeomorphism invariance induces a noncommuting charge algebra that gets exactly mapped to the algebra of coordinates in the…
By gauging a higher-moment polynomial degree global symmetry and a discrete charge conjugation (i.e., particle-hole) symmetry coupled to matter fields (two symmetries mutually non-commutative), we derive a new class of higher-rank tensor non-abelian gauge field theory with dynamically gauged fractonic matter fields: Non-abelian gauged fractons interact with a hybrid class of higher-rank (symmetric or generic non-symmetric) tensor gauge theory and anti-symmetric tensor topological field theory, generalizing [arXiv:1909.13879, 1911.01804]. We also apply a quantum phase transition similar to that…
