Fractons are emergent particles which are immobile in isolation, but which can move together in dipolar pairs or other small clusters. These exotic excitations naturally occur in certain quantum phases of matter described by tensor gauge theories. Previous research has focused on the properties of small numbers of fractons and their interactions, effectively mapping out the "Standard Model" of fractons. In the present work, however, we consider systems with a finite density of either fractons or their dipolar bound states, with a focus on the $U(1)$ fracton models. We study some of the phases in which emergent fractonic matter can exist, thereby initiating the study of the "condensed matter" of fractons. We begin by considering a system with a finite density of fractons, which we show can exhibit microemulsion physics, in which fractons form small-scale clusters emulsed in a phase dominated by long-range repulsion. We then move on to study systems with a finite density of mobile dipoles, which have phases analogous to many conventional condensed matter phases. We focus on two major examples: Fermi liquids and quantum Hall phases. A finite density of fermionic dipoles will form a Fermi surface and enter a Fermi liquid phase. Interestingly, this dipolar Fermi liquid exhibits a finite-temperature phase transition, corresponding to an unbinding transition of fractons. Finally, we study chiral two-dimensional phases corresponding to dipoles in "quantum Hall" states of their emergent magnetic field. We study numerous aspects of these generalized quantum Hall systems, such as their edge theories and ground state degeneracies.
We consider fermionic systems in which fermion parity is conserved within rigid subsystems, and describe an explicit procedure for gauging such subsystem fermion parity symmetries to obtain bosonic spin Hamiltonians. We show that gauging planar or fractal subsystem fermion parity symmetry in three spatial dimensions gives rise to a plethora of exactly solvable spin models exhibiting novel gapped fractonic orders characterized by emergent fermionic gauge theory. The low energy excitations of these models include fractional quasiparticles with constrained mobility and emergent fermionic statisti…
Fractonic phases of matter are novel quantum ground states supporting sub-dimensional emergent excitations with mobility restrictions. Due to a sub-extensive ground state degeneracy that is dependent on the geometry of the underlying lattice, fractonic phases are considered as models for quantum memory or quantum glass. While there exist a number of exactly solvable models with interactions between multiple particles/spins, the realization of such models in real materials is extremely challenging. In this work, we provide a realistic quantum model of quadratic spin interactions on the breathin…
In this work we explore the interplay between global symmetry and the mobility of quasiparticle excitations. We show that fractonic matter naturally appears in a three dimensional U(1) gauge theory, enriched by global U(1) and translational symmetries, via the mechanism of anyonic spin-orbital coupling. We develop a systematic understanding of such symmetry-enforced mobility restrictions in terms of the classification of U(1) gauge theories enriched by U(1) and translational symmetries. We provide a unified construction of these phases by gauging layered symmetry-protected topological phases.
The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem and its descendants impose strong constraints on the low-energy behavior of interacting quantum systems. In this paper, we formulate LSM-type constraints for lattice translation invariant systems with generalized U(1) symmetries which have recently appeared in the context of fracton phases: U(1) polynomial shift and subsystem symmetries. Starting with a generic interacting system with conserved dipole moment, we examine the conditions under which it supports a symmetric, gapped, and non-degenerate ground state, which we find requires that both the filling …
The Chamon model is an exactly solvable spin Hamiltonian exhibiting nontrivial fracton order. In this work, we dissect two distinct aspects of the model. First, we show that it exhibits an emergent fractonic gauge theory coupled to a fermionic subsystem symmetry-protected topological state under four stacks of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ planar symmetries. Second, we show that the Chamon model hosts 4-foliated fracton order by describing an entanglement renormalization group transformation that exfoliates four separate stacks of 2D toric codes from the bulk system.
We show how a finite number of conservation laws can globally `shatter' Hilbert space into exponentially many dynamically disconnected subsectors, leading to an unexpected dynamics with features reminiscent of both many body localization and quantum scars. A crisp example of this phenomenon is provided by a `fractonic' model of quantum dynamics constrained to conserve both charge and dipole moment. We show how the Hilbert space of the fractonic model dynamically fractures into disconnected emergent subsectors within a particular charge and dipole symmetry sector. This shattering can occur in a…
Motivated by striped correlated quantum matter, and the recently developed duality between elasticity of a two-dimensional (2D) crystal and a gauge theory, we derive a dual coupled U(1) vector gauge theory for a two-dimensional (2D) quantum smectic, where the disclination is mapped onto the fractonic charge, that we demonstrate can only move transversely to smectic layers. This smectic gauge theory dual also emerges from a gauge dual of a quantum crystal after a Higgs transition corresponding to a single flavor of its dipole condensation, an anisotropic quantum melting via dislocation prolifer…
Fracton phases exhibit striking behavior which appears to render them beyond the standard topological quantum field theory (TQFT) paradigm for classifying gapped quantum matter. Here, we explore fracton phases from the perspective of defect TQFTs and show that topological defect networks---networks of topological defects embedded in stratified 3+1D TQFTs---provide a unified framework for describing various types of gapped fracton phases. In this picture, the sub-dimensional excitations characteristic of fractonic matter are a consequence of mobility restrictions imposed by the defect network. …
Equilibrium statistical mechanics rests on the assumption of ergodic dynamics of a system modulo the conservation laws of local observables: extremization of entropy immediately gives Gibbs' ensemble (GE) for energy conserving systems and a generalized version of it (GGE) when the number of local conserved quantities (LCQ) is more than one. Through the last decade, statistical mechanics has been extended to describe the late-time behaviour of periodically driven (Floquet) quantum matter starting from a generic state. The structure built on the fundamental assumptions of ergodicity and identifi…
Paramagnetic spin systems with spontaneously broken spatial symmetries, such as valence bond solid (VBS) phases, can host topological defects carrying non-trivial quantum numbers, which enables the paradigm of deconfined quantum criticality. In this work, we study the properties of topological defects in valence plaquette solid (VPS) phases on square and cubic lattices. We show that the defects of the VPS order parameter, in addition to possessing non-trivial quantum numbers, have fracton mobility constraints deep in the VPS phase, which has been overlooked previously. The spinon inside a sing…
We analyze, in perturbation theory, a theory of weakly interacting fractons and non-relativistic fermions in a 2+1 dimensional Quantum Field Theory. In particular we compute the 1-loop corrections to the self energies and interaction vertex, and calculate the associated 1-loop Renormalization Group flows of the coupling constants. Surprisingly, we find that the fracton-fermion coupling does not flow due to an emergent coordinate-dependent symmetry of the effective Lagrangian, making this model a well-defined quantum field theory. We provide additional discussions on the regularization and reno…
Fractons are a type of emergent quasiparticle which cannot move freely in isolation, but can easily move in bound pairs. Similar phenomenology is found in boson-affected hopping models, encountered in the study of polaron systems and hole-doped Ising antiferromagnets, in which motion of a particle requires the creation or absorption of bosonic excitations. We show that boson-affected hopping models can provide a natural realization of fractons, either approximately or exactly, depending on the details of the system. We first consider a generic one-dimensional boson-affected hopping model, in w…
We revisit the theory of strongly correlated quantum matter perturbed by Harris-marginal random-field disorder, using the simplest holographic model. We argue that for weak disorder, the ground state of the theory is not Lifshitz invariant with a non-trivial disorder-dependent dynamical exponent, as previously found. Instead, below a non-perturbatively small energy scale, we predict infrared physics becomes independent of the disorder strength.
We develop a unified theoretical picture for excitations in Mott systems, portraying both the heavy quasiparticle excitations and the Hubbard bands as features of an emergent Fermi liquid state formed in an extended Hilbert space, which is non-perturbatively connected to the physical system. This observation sheds light on the fact that even the incoherent excitations in strongly correlated matter often display a well defined Bloch character, with pronounced momentum dispersion. Furthermore, it indicates that the Mott point can be viewed as a topological transition, where the number of distinc…
Fracton phases of matter feature a variety of exciting phenomena stemming from the restricted mobility of their quasiparticles. Here we consider a model of interacting electrons in one dimension that describes hopping of spin-singlet pairs and obeys both charge and dipole conservation laws. The model contains Bethe ansatz integrable sectors which allow us to solve the ground state and calculate the exact spin and single-electron excitation gaps. We observe hallmarks of fractonic behavior, including localization of single-electron excitations and propensity to clustering. Our results demonstrat…
The usual condensed matter lattice theories do not include dynamical electromagnetic (EM) field and do not have higher symmetries naturally (unless we engineer fine-tuned toy models to realize higher symmetries). However, for gapped systems, (anomalous) higher symmetries can emerge from the usual condensed matter theories at low energies (usually in a spontaneously broken form). We pointed out that spontaneously broken emergent higher symmetries are nothing but a kind of topological orders. The emergent (anomalous) higher symmetries can be used to constrain possible phase transitions and possi…
We introduce a new type of 3D compressible quantum phase, in which the U(1) charge conservation symmetry is weakly broken by a rigid string-like order parameter, and no local order parameter exists. We show that this gapless phase is completely stable and described at low energy by an infinite-component Chern-Simons-Maxwell theory. We determine the emergent symmetry group, which contains U(1) 0-form planar symmetries and an unusual subgroup of the dual U(1) 1-form symmetry supported on cylindrical surfaces. Through the associated 't Hooft anomaly, we examine how the filling condition is fulfil…
The Fermi-point scenario of emergent gravity has the following consequences: gravity emerges together with fermionic and bosonic matter; emergent fermionic matter consists of massless Weyl fermions; emergent bosonic matter consists of gauge fields; Lorentz symmetry persists well above the Planck energy; space-time is naturally 4-dimensional; Universe is naturally flat; cosmological constant is naturally small or zero; underlying physics is based on discrete symmetries; `quantum gravity' cannot be obtained by quantization of Einstein equations; there is no contradiction between quantum mechanic…
Condensed matter systems provide alternative `vacua' exhibiting emergent low-energy properties drastically different from those of the standard model. A case in point is the emergent quantum electrodynamics (QED) in the fractionalized topological magnet known as quantum spin ice, whose magnetic monopoles set it apart from the familiar QED of the world we live in. Here, we show that the two greatly differ in their fine-structure constant $α$, which parametrizes how strongly matter couples to light: $α_{\mathrm{QSI}}$ is more than an order of magnitude greater than $α_{\mathrm{QED}} \approx 1/13…
The formulation of a complete theory of classical electromagnetism by Maxwell is one of the milestones of science. The capacity of many-body systems to provide emergent mini-universes with vacua quite distinct from the one we inhabit was only recognised much later. Here, we provide an account of how simple systems of localised spins manage to emulate Maxwell electromagnetism in their low-energy behaviour. They are much less constrained by symmetry considerations than the relativistically invariant electromagnetic vacuum, as their substrate provides a non-relativistic background with even trans…
I give a pedagogical introduction to some of the many particles and gauge fields that can emerge in correlated matter. The standard model of materials is built on Landau's foundational principles: adiabatic continuity and spontaneous symmetry breaking. These ideas lead to quasiparticles that inherit their quantum numbers from fundamental particles, Nambu-Goldstone bosons, the Anderson-Higgs mechanism, and topological defects in order parameters. I then describe the modern discovery of physics beyond the standard model. Here, quantum correlations (entanglement) and topology play key roles in de…
Recent advances in condensed matter theory have revealed that new and exotic phases of matter can exist in spin models (or more precisely, local bosonic models) via a simple physical mechanism, known as "string-net condensation." These new phases of matter have the unusual property that their collective excitations are gauge bosons and fermions. In some cases, the collective excitations can behave just like the photons, electrons, gluons, and quarks in our vacuum. This suggests that photons, electrons, and other elementary particles may have a unified origin -- string-net condensation in our v…
Applying recursive renormalization group transformations to a scalar field theory, we obtain an effective quantum gravity theory with an emergent extra dimension, described by a dual holographic Einstein-Klein-Gordon type action. Here, the dynamics of both the dual order-parameter field and the metric tensor field originate from density-density and energy-momentum tensor-tensor effective interactions, respectively, in the recursive renormalization group transformation, performed approximately in the Gaussian level. This linear approximation in the recursive renormalization group transformation…
We illustrate how a completely new world of gauge force emerges from a conventional condensed matter system in a rigorous way. A characteristic energy scale (Mott gap) separates such an exotic universe from the ordinary one that we condensed matter physicists are more familiar with at higher energies. The governing physical law is no longer about individual electrons but concerns fractionalized particles, i.e., partons, as the new collective modes resulted from strong correlation among the electrons. Novel phenomena in this low-energy universe are clearly distinguished from Landau's Fermi liqu…
We investigate the interplay of quantum one-dimensional discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields and fermion matter near full filling in terms of deconfined fractionalized hole excitations that constitute mobile domain walls between vacua that break spontaneously translation symmetry. In the limit of strong string tension, we uncover emergent integrable correlated hopping dynamics of holes which is complementary to the constrained XXZ description in terms of bosonic dimers. We analyze numerically quantum dynamics of spreading of an isolated hole together with the associated time evolution of entan…
We present a toy model for interacting matter and geometry that explores quantum dynamics in a spin system as a precursor to a quantum theory of gravity. The model has no a priori geometric properties, instead, locality is inferred from the more fundamental notion of interaction between the matter degrees of freedom. The interaction terms are themselves quantum degrees of freedom so that the structure of interactions and hence the resulting local and causal structures are dynamical. The system is a Hubbard model where the graph of the interactions is a set of quantum evolving variables. We sho…
The phenomenon of emergent physics in condensed-matter many-body systems has become the paradigm of modern physics, and can probably also be applied to high-energy physics and cosmology. This encouraging fact comes from the universal properties of the ground state (the analog of the quantum vacuum) in fermionic many-body systems, described in terms of the momentum-space topology. In one of the two generic universality classes of fermionic quantum vacua the gauge fields, chiral fermions, Lorentz invariance, gravity, relativistic spin, and other features of the Standard Model gradually emerge at…
Holographic duality conjecture has been proposed to be a novel non-perturbative theoretical framework for the description of strongly correlated electrons. However, the duality transformation is not specified to cause ambiguity in the application of this theoretical machinery to condensed matter physics. In this study, we propose a prescription for the holographic duality transformation. Based on recursive renormalization group (RG) transformations, we obtain an effective field theory, which manifests the RG flow of an effective action through the introduction of an extra dimension. Resorting …
We address emergent higher-form symmetry in Higgs phases with superfluidity. The emergent symmetry appears if a matter field is invariant under a transformation of a common subgroup of gauge and global $\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetries. We explicitly construct the symmetry generator that is topological and gauge invariant in a low-energy effective theory. Such emergent symmetry is helpful to distinguish the Higgs and other phases with superfluidity, such as phases of QCD at finite density. We also discuss the possibility of phase transition between these phases.
Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) describes the relativistic interaction between the spin and momentum degrees of freedom of electrons, and is central to the rich phenomena observed in condensed matter systems. In recent years, new phases of matter have emerged from the interplay between SOC and low dimensionality, such as chiral spin textures and spin-polarized surface and interface states. These low-dimensional SOC-based realizations are typically robust and can be exploited at room temperature. Here we discuss SOC as a means of producing such fundamentally new physical phenomena in thin films and h…
By gauging a higher-moment polynomial degree global symmetry and a discrete charge conjugation (i.e., particle-hole) symmetry coupled to matter fields (two symmetries mutually non-commutative), we derive a new class of higher-rank tensor non-abelian gauge field theory with dynamically gauged fractonic matter fields: Non-abelian gauged fractons interact with a hybrid class of higher-rank (symmetric or generic non-symmetric) tensor gauge theory and anti-symmetric tensor topological field theory, generalizing [arXiv:1909.13879, 1911.01804]. We also apply a quantum phase transition similar to that…
Quantum spin liquids (QSL) are exotic phases of matter that host fractionalized excitations. It is difficult for local probes to characterize QSL, whereas quantum entanglement can serve as a powerful diagnostic tool due to its non-locality. The kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is one of the most studied and experimentally relevant models for QSL, but its solution remains under debate. Here, we perform a numerical Aharonov-Bohm experiment on this model and uncover universal features of the entanglement entropy. By means of the density-matrix renormalization group, we reveal the entangl…
