Let PG$(r, q)$ be the $r$-dimensional projective space over the finite field ${\rm GF}(q)$. A set $\cal X$ of points of PG$(r, q)$ is a cutting blocking set if for each hyperplane $Π$ of PG$(r, q)$ the set $Π\cap \cal X$ spans $Π$. Cutting blocking sets give rise to saturating sets and minimal linear codes and those having size as small as possible are of particular interest. We observe that from a cutting blocking set obtained by Fancsali and Sziklai, by using a set of pairwise disjoint lines, there arises a minimal linear code whose length grows linearly with respect to its dimension. We also provide two distinct constructions: a cutting blocking set of PG$(3, q^3)$ of size $3(q+1)(q^2+1)$ as a union of three pairwise disjoint $q$-order subgeometries and a cutting blocking set of PG$(5, q)$ of size $7(q+1)$ from seven lines of a Desarguesian line spread of PG$(5, q)$. In both cases the cutting blocking sets obtained are smaller than the known ones. As a byproduct we further improve on the upper bound of the smallest size of certain saturating sets and on the minimum length of a minimal $q$-ary linear code having dimension $4$ and $6$.
In this paper, we first study in detail the relationship between minimal linear codes and cutting blocking sets, which were recently introduced by Bonini and Borello, and then completely characterize minimal linear codes as cutting blocking sets. As a direct result, minimal projective codes of dimension $3$ and $t$-fold blocking sets with $t\ge 2$ in projective planes are identical objects. Some bounds on the parameters of minimal codes are derived from this characterization. This confirms a recent conjecture by Alfarano, Borello and Neri in [a geometric characterization of minimal codes and t…
Minimal rank-metric codes or, equivalently, linear cutting blocking sets are characterized in terms of the second generalized rank weight, via their connection with evasiveness properties of the associated $q$-system. Using this result, we provide the first construction of a family of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear MRD codes of length $2m$ that are not obtained as a direct sum of two smaller MRD codes. In addition, such a family has better parameters, since its codes possess generalized rank weights strictly larger than those of the previously known MRD codes. This shows that not all the MRD codes …
This work investigates the structure of rank-metric codes in connection with concepts from finite geometry, most notably the $q$-analogues of projective systems and blocking sets. We also illustrate how to associate a classical Hamming-metric code to a rank-metric one, in such a way that various rank-metric properties naturally translate into the homonymous Hamming-metric notions under this correspondence. The most interesting applications of our results lie in the theory of minimal rank-metric codes, which we introduce and study from several angles. Our main contributions are bounds for the p…
Minimal linear codes are algebraic objects which gained interest in the last twenty years, due to their link with Massey's secret sharing schemes. In this context, Ashikhmin and Barg provided a useful and a quite easy to handle sufficient condition for a linear code to be minimal, which has been applied in the construction of many minimal linear codes. In this paper, we generalize some recent constructions of minimal linear codes which are not based on Ashikhmin-Barg's condition. More combinatorial and geometric methods are involved in our proofs. In particular, we present a family of codes ar…
We develop three approaches of combinatorial flavour to study the structure of minimal codes and cutting blocking sets in finite geometry, each of which has a particular application. The first approach uses techniques from algebraic combinatorics, describing the supports in a linear code via the Alon-Füredi Theorem and the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. The second approach combines methods from coding theory and statistics to compare the mean and variance of the nonzero weights in a minimal code. Finally, the third approach regards minimal codes as cutting blocking sets and studies these using…
Strong blocking sets and their counterparts, minimal codes, attracted lots of attention in the last years. Combining the concatenating construction of codes with a geometric insight into the minimality condition, we explicitly provide infinite families of small strong blocking sets, whose size is linear in the dimension of the ambient projective spaces. As a byproduct, small saturating sets are obtained.
Minimal linear codes are in one-to-one correspondence with special types of blocking sets of projective spaces over a finite field, which are called strong or cutting blocking sets. In this paper we prove an upper bound on the minimal length of minimal codes of dimension $k$ over the $q$-element Galois field which is linear in both $q$ and $k$, hence improve the previous superlinear bounds. This result determines the minimal length up to a small constant factor. We also improve the lower and upper bounds on the size of so called higgledy-piggledy line sets in projective spaces and apply these …
The main purpose of this paper is to find double blocking sets in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ of size less than $3q$, in particular when $q$ is prime. To this end, we study double blocking sets in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ of size $3q-1$ admitting at least two $(q-1)$-secants. We derive some structural properties of these and show that they cannot have three $(q-1)$-secants. This yields that one cannot remove six points from a triangle, a double blocking set of size $3q$, and add five new points so that the resulting set is also a double blocking set. Furthermore, we give constructions of minimal double block…
We investigate the upper chromatic number of the hypergraph formed by the points and the $k$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$; that is, the most number of colors that can be used to color the points so that every $k$-subspace contains at least two points of the same color. Clearly, if one colors the points of a double blocking set with the same color, the rest of the points may get mutually distinct colors. This gives a trivial lower bound, and we prove that it is sharp in many cases. Due to this relation with double blocking sets, we also prove that for $t\leq \frac38p+1$, a small …
We prove that a minimal $t$-fold blocking set in a finite projective plane of order $n$ has cardinality at most \[\frac{1}{2} n\sqrt{4tn - (3t + 1)(t - 1)} + \frac{1}{2} (t - 1)n + t.\] This is the first general upper bound on the size of minimal $t$-fold blocking sets in finite projective planes and it generalizes the classical result of Bruen and Thas on minimal blocking sets. From the proof it directly follows that if equality occurs in this bound then every line intersects the blocking set $S$ in either $t$ points or $\frac{1}{2}(\sqrt{4tn - (3t + 1)(t - 1)} + t - 1) + 1$ points. We use th…
In this paper, we give a geometric characterization of minimal linear codes. In particular, we relate minimal linear codes to cutting blocking sets, introduced in a recent paper by Bonini and Borello. Using this characterization, we derive some bounds on the length and the distance of minimal codes, according to their dimension and the underlying field size. Furthermore, we show that the family of minimal codes is asymptotically good. Finally, we provide some geometrical constructions of minimal codes.
Minimal codes are being intensively studied in last years. $[n,k]_{q}$-minimal linear codes are in bijection with strong blocking sets of size $n$ in $PG(k-1,q)$ and a lower bound for the size of strong blocking sets is given by $(k-1)(q+1)\leq n$. In this note we show that all strong blocking sets of length 9 in $PG(3,2)$ are the hyperbolic quadrics $Q^{+}(3,2)$.
In this paper, we consider the following problem: given a connected graph $G$, can we reduce the domination number of $G$ by one by using only one edge contraction? We show that the problem is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard when restricted to $\{P_6,P_4+P_2\}$-free graphs and that it is $\mathsf{coNP}$-hard when restricted to subcubic claw-free graphs and $2P_3$-free graphs. As a consequence, we are able to establish a complexity dichotomy for the problem on $H$-free graphs when $H$ is connected.
In this paper, we study a class of linear codes defined by characteristic functions of certain subsets of a finite field. We derive a sufficient and necessary condition for such a code to be a minimal linear code by a character-theoretical approach. We obtain new three-weight or four-weight minimal linear codes that do not satisfy the Ashikhmin-Barg condition by using partial difference sets. We show that our construction yields minimal linear codes that do not arise from cutting vectorial blocking sets, and also discuss their applications in secret sharing schemes.
An $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear set of rank $k$ on a projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^h)$, containing at least one point of weight one, has size at least $q^{k-1}+1$ (see [J. De Beule and G. Van De Voorde, The minimum size of a linear set, J. Comb. Theory, Ser: A 164 (2019), 109-124.]). The classical example of such a set is given by a club. In this paper, we construct a broad family of linear sets meeting this lower bound, where we are able to prescribe the weight of the heaviest point to any value between $k/2$ and $k-1$. Our construction extends the known examples of linear sets of size $q^{k-1}+1…
We establish a cutting lemma for definable families of sets in distal structures, as well as the optimality of the distal cell decomposition for definable families of sets on the plane in $o$-minimal expansions of fields. Using it, we generalize the results in [J. Fox, J. Pach, A. Sheffer, A. Suk, and J. Zahl. "A semi-algebraic version of Zarankiewicz's problem"] on the semialgebraic planar Zarankiewicz problem to arbitrary $o$-minimal structures, in particular obtaining an $o$-minimal generalization of the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem.
The study of symmetric configurations $v_3$ with block size 3 has a long and rich history. In this paper we consider two colouring problems which arise naturally in the study of these structures. The first of these is weak colouring, in which no block is monochromatic; the second is strong colouring, in which every block is multichromatic. The former has been studied before in relation to blocking sets. Results are proved on the possible sizes of blocking sets and we begin the investigation of strong colourings. We also show that the known $21_3$ and $22_3$ configurations without a blocking se…
