The study of symmetric configurations $v_3$ with block size 3 has a long and rich history. In this paper we consider two colouring problems which arise naturally in the study of these structures. The first of these is weak colouring, in which no block is monochromatic; the second is strong colouring, in which every block is multichromatic. The former has been studied before in relation to blocking sets. Results are proved on the possible sizes of blocking sets and we begin the investigation of strong colourings. We also show that the known $21_3$ and $22_3$ configurations without a blocking set are unique and make a complete enumeration of all non-isomorphic $20_3$ configurations. We discuss the concept of connectivity in relation to symmetric configurations and complete the determination of the spectrum of 2-connected symmetric configurations without a blocking set. A number of open problems are presented.
Let $Σ=(X,\mathcal B)$ a $4$-cycle system of order $v=1+8k$. A $c$-colouring of type $s$ is a map $ϕ\colon \mathcal B\rightarrow \mathcal C$, with $C$ set of colours, such that exactly $c$ colours are used and for every vertex $x$ all the blocks containing $x$ are coloured exactly with $s$ colours. Let $4k=qs+r$, with $q,r\ge 0$. $ϕ$ is \emph{equitable} if for every vertex $x$ the set of the $4k$ blocks containing $x$ is parted in $r$ colour classes of cardinality $q+1$ and $s-r$ colour classes of cardinality $q$. In this paper we study colourings for which $s|k$, giving a description of equit…
An $e$-star system of order $n$ is a decomposition of the complete graph $K_n$ into copies of the complete bipartite graph $K_{1,e}$ (or $e$-star). Such systems are known to exist if and only if $n\geq 2e$ and $e$ divides $\binom{n}{2}$. We consider block colourings of such systems, where each $e$-star is assigned a colour, and two $e$-stars which share a vertex receive different colours. We present a computer analysis of block colourings of small $3$-star systems. Furthermore, we prove that: (i) for $n\equiv 0,1$ mod $2e$ there exists either an $n$ or $(n-1)$-block colourable $e$-star system …
Let $c$ and $c'$ be edge or vertex colourings of a graph $G$. We say that $c'$ is less symmetric than $c$ if the stabiliser (in $\operatorname{Aut} G$) of $c'$ is contained in the stabiliser of $c$. We show that if $G$ is not a bicentred tree, then for every vertex colouring of $G$ there is a less symmetric edge colouring with the same number of colours. On the other hand, if $T$ is a tree, then for every edge colouring there is a less symmetric vertex colouring with the same number of edges. Our results can be used to characterise those graphs whose distinguishing index is larger than their d…
For integer q>1, we derive edge q-colouring models for (i) the Tutte polynomial of a graph G on the hyperbola H_q, (ii) the symmetric weight enumerator of the set of group-valued q-flows of G, and (iii) a more general vertex colouring model partition function that includes these polynomials and the principal specialization order q of Stanley's symmetric monochrome polynomial. In the second half of the paper we exhibit a family of non-symmetric edge q-colouring models defined on k-regular graphs, whose partition functions for q >= k each evaluate the number of proper edge k-colourings of G when…

Let $\vec{K}_{\mathbb{N}}$ be the complete symmetric digraph on the positive integers. Answering a question of DeBiasio and McKenney, we construct a 2-colouring of the edges of $\vec{K}_{\mathbb{N}}$ in which every monochromatic path has density 0. On the other hand, we show that, in every colouring that does not have a directed path with $r$ edges in the first colour, there is directed path in the second colour with density at least $\frac1r$.
A weak $c$-colouring of a balanced incomplete block design (BIBD) is a colouring of the points of the design with $c$ colours in such a way that no block of the design has all of its vertices receive the same colour. A BIBD is said to be weakly $c$-chromatic if $c$ is the smallest number of colours with which the design can be weakly coloured. In this paper we show that for all $c \geq 2$ and $k \geq 3$ with $(c,k) \neq (2,3)$, the obvious necessary conditions for the existence of a $(v,k,λ)$-BIBD are asymptotically sufficient for the existence of a weakly $c$-chromatic $(v,k,λ)$-BIBD.
Alon and Mohar (2002) posed the following problem: among all graphs $G$ of maximum degree at most $d$ and girth at least $g$, what is the largest possible value of $χ(G^t)$, the chromatic number of the $t$th power of $G$? For $t\ge 3$, we provide several upper and lower bounds concerning this problem, all of which are sharp up to a constant factor as $d\to \infty$. The upper bounds rely in part on the probabilistic method, while the lower bounds are various direct constructions whose building blocks are incidence structures.
Assume $G$ is a graph. We view $G$ as a symmetric digraph, in which each edge $uv$ of $G$ is replaced by a pair of opposite arcs $e=(u,v)$ and $e^{-1}=(v,u)$. Assume $S$ is an inverse closed subset of permutations of positive integers. We say $G$ is $S$-$k$-colourable if for any mapping $σ: E(G) \to S$ with $σ(x,y) = (σ(y,x))^{-1}$, there is a mapping $f: V(G) \to [k]=\{1,2, \ldots, k\}$ such that for each arc $e=(x,y)$, $σ_e(f(x)) \ne f(y)$. The concept of $S$-$k$-colouring is a common generalization of many colouring concepts, including $k$-colouring, signed $k$-colouring defined by Máčajová…
Sampling from Gibbs distribution is a central problem in computer science as well as in statistical physics. In this work we focus on the k-colouring model} and the hard-core model with fugacity λwhen the underlying graph is an instance of Erdos-Renyi random graph G(n,p), where p=d/n and d is fixed. We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method for sampling from the aforementioned distributions. In particular, we consider Glauber (block) dynamics. We show a dramatic improvement on the bounds for rapid mixing in terms of the number of colours and the fugacity for the corresponding models. For both…
We show that approximate graph colouring is not solved by any level of the affine integer programming (AIP) hierarchy. To establish the result, we translate the problem of exhibiting a graph fooling a level of the AIP hierarchy into the problem of constructing a highly symmetric crystal tensor. In order to prove the existence of crystals in arbitrary dimension, we provide a combinatorial characterisation for realisable systems of tensors; i.e., sets of low-dimensional tensors that can be realised as the projections of a single high-dimensional tensor.

We study the existence of an $n$-fold rotationally symmetric placement of a symmetric graph in the plane allowing a continuous deformation that preserves the symmetry and the distances between adjacent vertices. We show that such a flexible placement exists if and only if the graph has a NAC-colouring satisfying an additional property on the symmetry; a NAC-colouring is a surjective edge colouring by two colours such that every cycle is either monochromatic, or there are at least two edges of each colour.
We begin the study of collections of three blocks which can occur in a symmetric configuration with block size 3, $v_3$. Formulae are derived for the number of occurrences of these and it is shown that the triangle, i.e. abf, ace, bcd is a basis. It is also shown that symmetric configurations without triangles exist if and only if $v=15$ or $v \geq 17$. Such configurations containing "many" triangles are also discussed and a complete analysis of the triangle content of those with a cyclic automorphism is given.
I give an elementary proof that a quasi-symmetric design without repeated blocks on $v$ points has at most $v\choose2$ blocks, with equality if and only if it is a tight $4$-design.
We consider the problem of embedding a symmetric configuration with block size 3 in an orientable surface in such a way that the blocks of the configuration form triangular faces and there is only one extra large face. We develop a sufficient condition for such an embedding to exist given any orientation of the configuration, and show that this condition is satisfied for all configurations on up to 19 points. We also show that there exists a configuration on 21 points which is not embeddable in any orientation. As a by-product, we give a revised table of numbers of configurations, correcting t…
A $(v, k, λ)$ symmetric design is said to have the symmetric difference property (SDP) if the symmetric difference of any three blocks is either a block or the complement of a block. Symmetric designs fulfilling this property have the nice property of having minimal rank, which makes them interesting to study. Thus, SDP designs become useful in coding theory applications. We show in this paper that difference sets formed by direct product construction of difference sets whose developments have the SDP also have the SDP. We also establish a few results regarding isomorphisms in product construc…
A $(v,k,λ)$-covering is a pair $(V, \mathcal{B})$, where $V$ is a $v$-set of points and $\mathcal{B}$ is a collection of $k$-subsets of $V$ (called blocks), such that every unordered pair of points in $V$ is contained in at least $λ$ blocks in $\mathcal{B}$. The excess of such a covering is the multigraph on vertex set $V$ in which the edge between vertices $x$ and $y$ has multiplicity $r_{xy}-λ$, where $r_{xy}$ is the number of blocks which contain the pair $\{x,y\}$. A covering is symmetric if it has the same number of blocks as points. Bryant et al.(2011) adapted the determinant related arg…
This paper deals with the Cayley graph $\Cay,$ where the generating set consists of all block transpositions. A motivation for the study of these particular Cayley graphs comes from current research in Bioinformatics. We prove that ${\rm{Aut}}(\Cay)$ is the product of the right translation group by $\textsf{N}\rtimes \textsf{D}_{n+1},$ where $\textsf{N}$ is the subgroup fixing $S_n$ element-wise and $\textsf{D}_{n+1}$ is a dihedral group of order $2(n+1)$. We conjecture that $\textsf{N}$ is trivial. We also prove that the subgraph $Γ$ with vertex-set $S_n$ is a $2(n-2)$-regular graph whose aut…
Balanced incomplete block designs (BIBDs) have wide applications in engineering, business and sciences. In this paper, for each (v, k, λ)-BIBD, we construct a strongly symmetric k-th order v-dimensional tensor. We call such a strongly symmetric tensor the characterization tensor of that BIBD, and the absolute value tensor of the characterization tensor the signless characterization tensor of that BIBD. We study some spectral properties of such characterization tensors and signless characterization tensors. In this way, we provide a new tool to study BIBDs.
This paper is an attempt to compute the decomposition numbers of the blocks of the symmetric group which have "small defect"; that is, blocks of weight smaller than the characteristic. We present various methods for computing such decomposition numbers and use these as support for a conjecture which relates decomposition numbers in different characteristics. Finally, we apply our techniques to blocks of weight three.
In this expository paper we describe a group theoretic characterization of arc-transitive graphs and their quotients. When passing from a symmetric graph to its quotient, much information is lost, but some of this information may be recovered from a certain combinatorial design on the blocks, as well as a bipartite graph between the blocks. We address the "extention problem" which asks, when is this additional information sufficient to recover the original graph?
We study the existence of unitriangular basic sets for the symmetric group which behave nicely with respect to the Mullineux involution. Such sets give a natural labelling for the modular irreducible representations. We show that, for any odd prime p, the p-blocks of the symmetric group with weight 2 have stable unitriangular basic sets which we describe by studying the combinatorics of partitions in these blocks.
A major problem in the study of combinatorial aspects of permutation groups is to determine the distances in the symmetric group $\Sym_n$ with respect to a generator set. One well-known such a case is when the generator set $S_n$ consists of block transpositions. It should be noted that "the block transposition distance of a permutation" is the distance of the permutation from the identity permutation in the Cayley graph $\Cay$, and "sorting a permutation by block transpositions" is equivalent to finding shortest paths in $\Cay$. The original results in our thesis concern the lower and upper b…
Given a generator set $S$ of the symmetric group ${\rm{Sym}}_n$, every permutation $π\in {\rm{Sym}_n}$ is a word (product of elements) of $S$. A positive integer $d(π)$ is associated with each $π\in{\rm{Sym}_n}$ taking the length of the shortest such word, and the $S$-diameter $d(S)$ is the maximum value of $d(π)$ with $π$ ranging over ${\rm{Sym_n}}$. The distance $d(π,ν)$ of two permutations $π,ν$ defined by $d(ν^{-1}\circπ)$ satisfies the axioms of a metric space. In this paper we consider the case where $S$ consists of all block transpositions of ${\rm{Sym_n}}$ and call $d(π)$ the block tra…
We define a new type of Golomb ruler, which we term a resolvable Golomb ruler. These are Golomb rulers that satisfy an additional "resolvability" condition that allows them to generate resolvable symmetric configurations. The resulting configurations give rise to progressive dinner parties. In this paper, we investigate existence results for resolvable Golomb rulers and their application to the construction of resolvable symmetric configurations and progressive dinner parties. In particular, we determine the existence or nonexistence of all possible resolvable symmetric configurations and prog…
Block character of a finite symmetric group S(n) is a positive definite function which depends only on the number of cycles in permutation. We describe the cone of block characters by identifying its extreme rays, and find relations of the characters to descent representations and the coinvariant algebra of S(n). The decomposition of extreme block characters into the sum of characters of irreducible representations gives rise to certain limit shape theorems for random Young diagrams. We also study counterparts of the block characters for the infinite symmetric group S(\infty) along with their …
In this paper, we give a complete self-contained proof that the rigidity matrix of a symmetric bar and joint framework (as well as its transpose) can be transformed into a block-diagonalized form using techniques from group representation theory. This theorem is basic to a number of useful and interesting results concerning the rigidity and flexibility of symmetric frameworks. As an example, we use this theorem to prove a generalization of the Fowler-Guest symmetry extension of Maxwell's rule which can be applied to both injective and non-injective realizations in all dimensions.
For any prime p, we construct, and simultaneously count, all of the complex Specht modules in a given p-block of the symmetric group which remain irreducible when reduced modulo p. We call the Specht modules with this property p-irreducible modules. Recently Fayers has proven a conjecture of James and Mathas that provides a characterization of the partitions that correspond to the p-irreducible modules. In this paper we present a method for decomposing the partitions corresponding to p-irreducible modules, and we use this decomposition to construct and count all of the partitions corresponding…
A graph $Γ$ is called $G$-symmetric if it admits $G$ as a group of automorphisms acting transitively on the set of ordered pairs of adjacent vertices. We give a classification of $G$-symmetric graphs $Γ$ with $V(Γ)$ admitting a nontrivial $G$-invariant partition $\mathcal{B}$ such that there is exactly one edge of $Γ$ between any two distinct blocks of $\mathcal{B}$. This is achieved by giving a classification of $(G, 2)$-point-transitive and $G$-block-transitive designs $\mathcal{D}$ together with $G$-orbits $Ω$ on the flag set of $\mathcal{D}$ such that $G_{σ, L}$ is transitive on $L \setmin…
For a matrix *-algebra B, consider the matrix *-algebra A consisting of the symmetric tensors in the n-fold tensor product of B. Examples of such algebras in coding theory include the Bose-Mesner algebra and Terwilliger algebra of the (non)binary Hamming cube, and algebras arising in SDP-hierarchies for coding bounds using moment matrices. We give a computationally efficient block diagonalization of A in terms of a given block diagonalization of B, and work out some examples, including the Terwilliger algebra of the binary- and nonbinary Hamming cube. As a tool we use some basic facts about re…
We prove that the center of a regular block of parabolic category O for the general linear Lie algebra is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of a corresponding Springer fiber. This was conjectured by Khovanov. We also find presentations for the centers of singular blocks, which are cohomology algebras of Spaltenstein varieties.
We relate the generating functions of the dimensions of the Hochschild cohomology in any fixed degree of the symmetric groups with those of blocks of the symmetric groups. We show that the first Hochschild cohomology of a positive defect block of a symmetric group is non-zero, answering in the affirmative a question of the third author. To do this, we prove a formula expressing the dimension of degree one Hochschild cohomology as a sum of dimensions of centres of blocks of smaller symmetric groups. This in turn is a consequence of a general formula that makes more precise a theorem of our prev…
We classify the pairwise transitive 2-designs, that is, 2-designs such that a group of automorphisms is transitive on the following five sets of ordered pairs: point-pairs, incident point-block pairs, non-incident point-block pairs, intersecting block-pairs and non-intersecting block-pairs. These 2-designs fall into two classes: the symmetric ones and the quasisymmetric ones. The symmetric examples include the symmetric designs from projective geometry, the 11-point biplane, the Higman-Sims design, and designs of points and quadratic forms on symplectic spaces. The quasisymmetric examples aris…
Permutation codes have received a great attention due to various applications. For different applications, one needs permutation codes under different metrics. The generalized Cayley metric was introduced by Chee and Vu [4] and this metric includes several other metrics as special cases. However, the generalized Cayley metric is not easily computable in general. Therefore the block permutation metric was introduced by Yang et al. [22] as the generalized Cayley metric and the block permutation metric have the same magnitude. However, the block permutation metric lacks the symmetry property whic…
It is well known that using the conventional non-Hermitian but ${\cal PT}-$symmetric Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with real spectrum one can realize the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) process in an exceptional-point limit of order $N$. Such an exactly solvable simulation of the BEC-type phase transition is, unfortunately, incomplete because the standard version of the model only offers an extreme form of the limit characterized by a minimal geometric multiplicity $K=1$. In our paper we describe a rescaled and partitioned direct-sum modification of the linear version of the Bose-Hubbard model whi…
