We study axion effective field theories (EFTs), with a focus on axion couplings to massive chiral gauge fields. We investigate the EFT interactions that participate in processes with an axion and two gauge bosons, and we show that, when massive chiral gauge fields are present, such interactions do not entirely originate from the usual anomalous EFT terms. We illustrate this both at the EFT level and by matching to UV-complete theories. In order to assess the consistency of the Peccei--Quinn (PQ) anomaly matching, it is useful to introduce an auxiliary, non-dynamical gauge field associated to the PQ symmetry. When applied to the case of the Standard Model (SM) electroweak sector, our results imply that anomaly-based sum rules between EFT interactions are violated when chiral matter is integrated out, which constitutes a smoking gun of the latter. As an illustration, we study a UV-complete chiral extension of the SM, containing an axion arising from an extended Higgs sector and heavy fermionic matter that obtains most of its mass by coupling to the Higgs doublets. We assess the viability of such a SM extension through electroweak precision tests, bounds on Higgs rates and direct searches for heavy charged matter. At energies below the mass of the new chiral fermions, the model matches onto an EFT where the electroweak gauge symmetry is non-linearly realised.
In Effective Field Theories (EFTs) with higher-dimensional operators many anomalous dimensions vanish at the one-loop level for no apparent reason. With the use of supersymmetry, and a classification of the operators according to their embedding in super-operators, we are able to show why many of these anomalous dimensions are zero. The key observation is that one-loop contributions from superpartners trivially vanish in many cases under consideration, making supersymmetry a powerful tool even for non-supersymmetric models. We show this in detail in a simple U(1) model with a scalar and fermio…
In this paper, we discuss the construction of Effective Field Theories (EFTs) in which a chiral fermion, charged under both gauge and global symmetries, is integrated out. Inspired by typical axion models, these symmetries can be spontaneously broken, and the global ones might also be anomalous. In this context, particular emphasis is laid on the derivative couplings of the Goldstone bosons to the fermions, as these lead to severe divergences and ambiguities when building the EFT. We show how to precisely solve these difficulties within the path integral formalism, by adapting the anomalous Wa…
Mixing of axion fields is widely used to generate EFTs with phenomenologically advantageous features, such as hierarchies between axion couplings to different gauge fields and/or large effective field ranges. While these features are strongly constrained by periodicity for models with only a single axion, mixing has been used in the literature (sometimes incorrectly) to try to evade some of these constraints. In this paper, we ask whether it is possible to use axion mixing to generate an EFT of axions that evades these constraints by flowing to a theory of a non-compact scalar in the IR. We co…

Inspired by recent studies of high-scale decay constant or flavorful QCD axions, we review and clarify their existence in effective string models with anomalous $U(1)$ gauge groups. We find that such models, when coupled to charged scalars getting vacuum expectation values, always have one light axion, whose mass can only come from nonperturbative effects. If the main nonperturbative effect is from QCD, then it becomes a Peccei-Quinn axion candidate for solving the strong CP problem. We then study simple models with universal Green-Schwarz mechanism and only one charged scalar field: in the mi…
We analyze the quantum consistency of anomalous abelian models and of their effective field theories, rendered anomaly-free by a Wess-Zumino term, in the case of multiple abelian symmetries. These models involve the combined Higgs-Stuckelberg mechanism and predict a pseudoscalar axion-like field that mixes with the goldstones of the ordinary Higgs sector. We focus our study on the issue of unitarity of these models both before and after spontaneous symmetry breaking and detail the set of Ward identities and the organization of the loop expansion in the effective theory. The analysis is perform…
We present a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (USSM-A) with an anomalous U(1) and Stueckelberg axions for anomaly cancellation, generalizing similar non-supersymmetric constructions. The model, built by a bottom-up approach, is expected to capture the low-energy supersymmetric description of axionic symmetries in theories with gauged anomalous abelian interactions, previously explored in the non-supersymmetric case for scenarios with intersecting branes. The choice of a USSM-like superpotential, with one extra singlet superfield and an extra abelian symmetry, allows a physical ax…
We analyze the conditions under which some supersymmetric generalizations of a class of models descending from string theory allow an axion in the physical spectrum, due to the presence of anomalous abelian gauge interactions. The gauge structure of these constructions involve the Stueckelberg supermultiplet and a supersymmetric version of the Wess-Zumino term for anomaly cancellation. While these conditions are not satisfied by the MSSM superpotential, we show that an axion-like particle appears in the spectrum if extra Standard Model singlets are present. We show that the minimal requirement…
Massive $U(1)$ gauge theories featuring parametrically light vectors are suspected to belong in the Swampland of consistent EFTs that cannot be embedded into a theory of quantum gravity. We study four-dimensional, chiral $U(1)$ gauge theories that appear anomalous over a range of energies up to the scale of anomaly-cancelling massive chiral fermions. We show that such theories require to be UV-completed at a finite cutoff below which a radial mode must appear, and cannot be decoupled -- a Stückelberg limit does not exist. When the infrared fermion spectrum contains a mixed $U(1)$-gravitational…
Recently an effective Lagrangian for the interactions of photons, Nambu-Goldstone bosons and superfluid phonons in dense quark matter has been derived using anomaly matching arguments. In this paper we illuminate the nature of certain anomalous terms in this Lagrangian by an explicit microscopic calculation. We also generalize the corresponding construction to introduce the axion field. We derive an anomalous axion effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of axions with photons and superfluid phonons in the dense matter background. This effective Lagrangian, among other things, implies…
The axion is much lighter than all other degrees of freedom introduced by the Peccei-Quinn mechanism to solve the strong CP problem. It is therefore natural to use an effective field theory (EFT) to describe its interactions. Loop processes calculated in the EFT may, however, explicitly depend on the ultraviolet cutoff. In general the UV cutoff is not uniquely defined, but the dimensionful couplings suggest to identify it with the Peccei-Quinn symmetry-breaking scale. An example are $K \rightarrow π+ a$ decays that will soon be tested to improved precision in NA62 and KOTO and whose amplitude …
Among solutions of the strong CP problem, the "invisible" axion in the narrow axion window is argued to be the remaining possibility among natural solutions on the smallness of $\barθ$. Related to the gravity spoil of global symmetries, some prospective "invisible" axions from theory point of view are discussed. In all these discussions including the observational possibility and cosmological constraints, including a safe domain wall problem, must be included.
We propose a natural inflation model driven by an imaginary or axionic component of a Kähler modulus in string-inspired supergravity. The shift symmetry of the axion is gauged under an anomalous $U(1)_X$ symmetry, which leads to a modulus-dependent Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term. The matter fields are stabilized by F-terms, and the real component of the modulus is stabilized by the $U(1)_X$ D-term, while its axion remains light. Therefore, the masses of real and imaginary components of the modulus are separated at different scales. The scalar potential for natural inflation is realized by the supe…
Braneworld theories are often described as low-energy effective field theories (EFTs) featuring an infinitely thin 3-brane and 4D fields exactly localized on it. We investigate whether an exactly localized braneworld can arise as a limit of a theory of 5D fields. Using a holographic formalism we argue that such limit does not exist in the presence of gravity, therefore implying a discontinuity in the space of EFTs. We then present specific models involving exactly localized fields in which inconsistencies appear, which are solved when fields are taken as quasilocalized. Part of our arguments r…
The effect of quantum torsion in theories of quantum gravity is usually described by an axion-like field which couples to matter and to gravitation and radiation gauge fields. In perturbation theory, the couplings of this torsion-descent axion field are of derivative type and so preserve a shift symmetry. This shift symmetry may be broken, if the torsion-descent axion field mixes with other axions, which could be related to moduli fields in string-inspired effective theories. In particular, the shift symmetry may break explicitly via non-perturbative effects, when these axions couple to fermio…
The axion couplings to SM gauge bosons are derived in various models, and shown to always arise entirely from non-anomalous fermion loops. They are thus independent of the anomaly structure of the model. This fact is without consequence for vector gauge interactions like QCD and QED, but has a major impact for chiral gauge theories. For example, in the DFSZ axion model, the couplings of axions to electroweak gauge bosons do not follow the pattern expected from chiral anomalies, as we prove by an explicit calculation. The reason for this mismatch is traced back to triangle Feynman diagrams sens…
We propose a new scenario of using the dark axion portal at one-loop level to explain the recently observed muon anomalous magnetic moment by the Fermilab Muon g-2 experiment. Both axion/axion-like particle (ALP) and dark photon are involved in the same vertex with photon. Although ALP or dark photon alone cannot explain muon $g-2$, since the former provides only negative contribution while the latter has very much constrained parameter space, dark axion portal can save the situation and significantly extend the allowed parameter space. The observed muon anomalous magnetic moment provides a ro…
We consider extensions of the standard model inspired by intersecting D-brane constructions, in order to address flavor mass textures. We include additional anomalous gauge symmetries, and scalar fields to break them and to generate Froggatt-Nielsen mass terms. Green-Schwarz axions are included to cancel mixed anomalies rendering the models consistent. At low energies, a residual anomalous global symmetry remains, and its associated pseudo-Goldstone mode becomes the physical axion, which can be interpreted as an axion arising from open string modes. General considerations show that such axions…
One of the simplest ways to account for the observed W-boson mass shift is to introduce the $SU(2)_L$ triplet Higgs boson with zero hypercharge, whose vacuum expectation value is about 3 GeV. If the triplet is heavy enough at $\mathcal{O}(1)$ TeV, it essentially contributes only to $T$ parameter without any conflict to the observation. The presence of a complex triplet Higgs boson raises the $SU(2)_L$ gauge coupling constant to $α_2(M_{\rm PL} )\simeq 1/44$ at the Planck scale. Thanks to this larger gauge coupling constant, we show that the electroweak axion vacuum energy explains the observed…
We study the Casimir effect in axion electrodynamics. A finite $θ$-term affects the energy dispersion relation of photon if $θ$ is time and/or space dependent. We focus on a special case with linearly inhomogeneous $θ$ along the $z$-axis. Then we demonstrate that the Casimir force between two parallel plates perpendicular to the $z$-axis can be either attractive or repulsive, dependent on the gradient of $θ$. We call this repulsive component in the Casimir force induced by inhomogeneous $θ$ the anomalous Casimir effect.
We consider a string inspired non-supersymmetric extension of the standard model with gauged anomalous U(1) flavor symmetries. Consistency requires the Green-Schwarz mechanism to cancel mixed anomalies. The additional required scalars provide Stuckelberg masses for the $Z'$ particles associated to the gauged flavor symmetry, so they decouple at low energies. Our models also include a complex scalar field $ϕ$ to generate Froggatt-Nielsen mass terms for light particles giving a partial solution to the fermion mass problem. A residual approximate (anomalous) global symmetry survives at low energi…
We discuss a possibility that a superconformal dynamics induces the emergence of a global $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry to solve the strong CP problem through the axion. Fields spontaneously breaking the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry couple to new quarks charged under the ordinary color $SU(3)_C$ and a new $SU(N)$ gauge group. The theory flows into an IR fixed point where the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ breaking fields hold a large anomalous dimension leading to the suppression of $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$-violating higher dimensional operators. The spontaneous breaking of the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ makes the new quarks massive. Th…
The well-known leptonic U(1) symmetry of the standard model of quarks and leptons is extended to include a number of new fermions and scalars. The resulting theory has an invisible QCD axion (thereby solving the strong CP problem), a candidate for weak-scale dark matter, as well as radiative neutrino masses. A possible key connection is a color-triplet scalar, which may be produced and detected at the Large Hadron Collider.
While no regularization is consistent with the anomalous chiral symmetry which occurs for massless fermions, the artificial axion-induced symmetry for massive fermions is shown here to be consistent with a standard regularization, even in curved spacetime, so that it can be said to have no anomaly in gauge or gravitational fields. Implications for theta terms are pointed out.
To obtain natural inflation with large tensor-to-scalar ratio in string framework, we need a special moduli stabilization mechanism which can separate the masses of real and imaginary components of Kähler moduli at different scales, and achieve a trans-Planckian axion decay constant from sub-Planckian axion decay constants. In this work, we stabilize the matter fields by F-terms and the real components of Kähler moduli by D-terms of two anomalous $U(1)_X\times U(1)_A$ symmetries strongly at high scales, while the corresponding axions remain light due to their independence on the Fayet-Iliopoul…
We elaborate on an extension of the Standard Model with a gauge structure enlarged by a single anomalous U(1), where the presence of a Wess-Zumino term is motivated by the Green-Schwarz mechanism of string theory. The additional gauge interaction is anomalous and requires an axion for anomaly cancelation. The pseudoscalar implements the Stückelberg mechanism and undergoes mixing with the standard Higgs sector to render the additional U(1) massive. We consider a 2-Higgs doublet model. We show that the anomalous effective vertices involving neutral currents are potentially observable. We clarify…
We present a study of the mechanism of anomaly cancellation using only transverse invariant amplitudes on anomaly diagrams at higher perturbative orders. The method is the realization of the Green-Schwarz (GS) mechanism at field theory level, which restores the Ward identities by a subtraction of the anomaly pole. Some of the properties of the GS vertex are analyzed both in the context of unitarity and of the organization of the related perturbative expansion. We investigate the role played by the GS and the Wess-Zumino vertices in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and in the hyperfine…
We study electroweak scale Dark Matter (DM) whose interactions with baryonic matter are mediated by a heavy anomalous $Z'$. We emphasize that when the DM is a Majorana particle, its low-velocity annihilations are dominated by loop suppressed annihilations into the gauge bosons, rather than by p-wave or chirally suppressed annihilations into the SM fermions. Because the $Z'$ is anomalous, these kinds of DM models can be realized only as effective field theories (EFTs) with a well-defined cutoff, where heavy spectator fermions restore gauge invariance at high energies. We formulate these EFTs, e…
We study the problem of axion-photon coupling in the magnetic field influenced by gravitational radiation. We focus on exact solutions to the equations for axion electrodynamics in the pp-wave gravitational background for two models with initially constant magnetic field. The first model describes the response of an initially constant magnetic field in a gravitational-wave vacuum with unit refraction index; the second model is characterized by a non-unit refraction index prescribed to the presence of ordinary and/or dark matter. We show that both models demonstrate anomalous behavior of the el…
This thesis work analyzes basic field theoretical aspects of a class of models motivated by orientifold vacua of string theory and some of their phenomenological applications at the Large Hadron Collider. They extend the gauge structure of the Standard Model by anomalous extra U(1) symmetries, which involve Stuckelberg axions for anomaly cancellation and are accompanied by Chern-Simons interactions. In particular, these effective actions are characterized by a physical pseudoscalar (the axi-Higgs) in the CP-odd spectrum, which has the properties of a generalized Peccei-Quinn axion, with indepe…
We analyze the most salient cosmological features of axions in extensions of the Standard Model with a gauged anomalous extra U(1) symmetry. The model is built by imposing the constraint of gauge invariance in the anomalous effective action, which is extended with Wess-Zumino counterterms. These generate axion-like interactions of the axions to the gauge fields and a gauged shift symmetry. The scalar sector is assumed to acquire a non-perturbative potential after inflation, at the electroweak phase transition, which induces a mixing of the Stuckelberg field of the model with the scalars of the…
Axionic cosmic string solutions are investigated in a superstring motivated model with a pseudo-anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry. The inclusion of a gauge field and spatially varying dilaton allow local defect solutions with finite energy per unit length to be found. Fermion zero modes (whose presence is implied by supersymmetry) are also analysed. The corresponding fermion currents suggest strong cosmological bounds on the model. It is shown that the unusual form of the axion strings weakens these bounds. Other cosmological constraints on the underlying theory are also discussed.
If the inflaton is a pseudo-scalar axion, the axion shift symmetry can protect the flatness of its potential from too large radiative corrections. This possibility, known as natural inflation, requires an axion scale which is greater than the (reduced) Planck scale. It is unclear whether such a high value is compatible with an effective field theoretical description, and if the global axionic symmetry survives quantum gravity effects. We propose a mechanism which provides an effective large axion scale, although the original one is sub-Planckian. The mechanism is based on the presence of two a…
In string compactifications, frequently there appears the anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry which belonged to E8$\times$E8 of the heterotic string. This anomalous U(1) gauge boson obtains mass at the compactification scale, just below $10^{18\,}$GeV, by absorbing one pseudoscalar (corresponding to the model-independent axion) from the second rank anti-symmetric tensor field $B_{MN}$. Below the compactification scale, there results a global symmetry U(1)$_{\rm anom}$ whose charge $Q_{\rm anom}$ is the original gauge U(1) charge. This is the most natural global symmetry, realizing the "invisible" ax…

We applied an effective approximation into Maxwell's equations with an axion interaction for haloscope searches. A set of Maxwell's equations acquired from this approximation describes just the reacted fields generated by the anomalous interaction. Unlike other approaches, this set of Maxwell's equations inherently satisfies the boundary conditions for haloscope searches. The electromagnetic field solutions from the Maxwell's equations were evaluated for both cylindrical and toroidal cavity geometries including when the axion mass becomes ultra-light (sub-meV). A small but non-zero difference …
We study UV-complete Froggatt-Nielsen-like models for the generation of mass and mixing hierarchies, assuming that the integrated heavy fields are chiral with respect to an abelian Froggatt-Nielsen symmetry. It modifies the mixed anomalies with respect to the Standard Model gauge group, which opens up the possibility to gauge the Froggatt-Nielsen symmetry without the need to introduce additional spectator fermions, while keeping mass matrices usually associated to anomalous flavour symmetries. We give specific examples where this happens, and we study the flavourful axion which arises from an …
In this mini review, we discuss some recent developments regarding properties of (quantum) field-theory models containing anti-Hermitian Yukawa interactions between pseudoscalar fields (axions) and Dirac (or Majorana) fermions. Specifically, after motivating physically such interactions, in the context of string-inspired low-energy effective field theories, involving right-handed neutrinos and axion fields, we proceed to discuss their formal consistency within the so-called Parity-Time-reversal(PT)-symmetry framework, as well as dynamical mass generation, induced by the Yukawa interactions, fo…
We study the magneto response with non-conserved currents in Holography. Non-conserved currents are dual to massive vector fields in AdS. We introduce the mass in a gauge invariant way via the Stückelberg mechanism. In particular we find generalizations of the Chiral Magnetic Effect, the Chiral Separation Effect and the Chiral Magnetic Wave. Since the associated charge is not conserved we need to source it explicitly by a coupling, the generalization of the chemical potential. In this setup we find that in general the anomalous transport phenomena are still realized. The values we find for non…
We study QCD axion or cosmological axion-like particles (ALPs) in a model inspired by the recent interest in 4-dimensional clockwork models, with the global symmetry being accidentally enforced by a gauge abelian quiver with scalar bifundamental fields. For the QCD axion, we analyze the connection between the degree of protection of the axion mass against gravitational corrections, the explanation of the hierarchy $f_a \ll M_P$ and the number of colored fermions needed to generate anomalous couplings to gluons, all linked together by the underlying gauge symmetries. Based on that model and on …
The Antarctic Impulse Transient Antenna (\textsc{ANITA}) collaboration [1-3] has reported two anomalous events with noninverted polarity. These events are hard to explain in terms of conventional cosmic rays (CRs). We explore a new possible explanation for these anomalous events by suggesting that these events can be related to the dark matter (DM) annihilations within the so-called axion quark nugget (AQN) DM model. This model was initially invented for a completely different purpose to explain the observed similarity between the dark and the visible components in the Universe, i.e. $Ω_{\rm D…
Axion-like fields are naturally generated by a mechanism of anomaly cancellation of one or more anomalous gauge abelian symmetries at the Planck scale, emerging as duals of a two-form from the massless bosonic sector of string theory. This suggests an analogy of the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation, at field theory level, which results in one or more Stueckelberg pseudoscalars. In the case of a single Stueckelberg pseudoscalar $b$, vacuum misalignments at phase transitions in the early Universe at the GUT scale provide a small mass - due to instanton suppression of the periodic …
Extensions of the Standard Model with extra neutral currents due to additional anomalous abelian gauge factors are considered. We summarize the main features of the effective action associated to these theories. They are characterized by an axion-like particle (the {\em axi-higgs}) which can be (almost) massless, with its mass generated non-perturbatively in the QCD vacuum as for an ordinary Peccei-Quinn axion, but that can also mix with the scalars of the Higgs sector, becoming a heavy axion. We briefly describe the interplay between the electroweak and the QCD sectors in these types of theor…
Axion-like particles are an important part of the spectrum of anomalous gauge theories involving modified mechanisms of cancellation of the gauge anomalies. Among these are intersecting brane models, which are characterized by the presence of one physical axion. We overview a recent study of their supersymmetric construction and some LHC studies of the productions rates for a gauged axion.
We investigate the decoupling of heavy right handed neutrinos in the context of an SO(10) GUT model, where a remnant anomalous symmetry is $U(1)_{X}$. In this model the see-saw mechanism which generates the neutrino masses is intertwined with the Stueckelberg mechanism, which leaves the CP-odd phase of a very heavy Higgs in the low energy spectrum as an axion-like particle. Such pseudoscalar is predicted to be ultralight, in the $10^{-20}$ eV mass range. In this scenario, the remnant anomalous $X$ symmetry of the particles of the Standard Model is interpreted as due to the incomplete decouplin…
We illustrate the structure and the main phenomenological features of a supersymmetric model (the USSM-A) built following a bottom-up approach and containing an anomalous abelian gauge symmetry. This model supports a gauged axion in its spectrum and provides a generalization of the global (supersymmetric) Peccei-Quinn construction. Complete simulations of the neutralino relic density are performed. Bounds from CAST and WMAP, combined with dark matter simulations, provide significant constraints on the scale of the interactions between the axion and the gauge fields.
