We consider a string inspired non-supersymmetric extension of the standard model with gauged anomalous U(1) flavor symmetries. Consistency requires the Green-Schwarz mechanism to cancel mixed anomalies. The additional required scalars provide Stuckelberg masses for the $Z'$ particles associated to the gauged flavor symmetry, so they decouple at low energies. Our models also include a complex scalar field $ϕ$ to generate Froggatt-Nielsen mass terms for light particles giving a partial solution to the fermion mass problem. A residual approximate (anomalous) global symmetry survives at low energies. The associated pseudo-Goldstone mode is the phase of the $ϕ$ scalar field, and it becomes the dominant contribution to the physical axion. An effective field theory analysis that includes neutrino masses gives a prediction for the axion decay constant. We find a simple modeI where the axion decay constant is in the center of the allowed window.
An accidental U(1) Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry automatically arises in a class of SO(10) unified theories upon gauging the SU(3)$_{f}$ flavour group. The PQ symmetry is protected by the $\mathbb{Z}_4 \times \mathbb{Z}_3$ center of $\text{SO(10)} \times \text{SU(3)}_f$ up to effective operators of canonical dimension six. However, high-scale contributions to the axion potential posing a PQ quality problem arise only at $d=9$. In the pre-inflationary PQ breaking scenario the axion mass window is predicted to be $m_a \in [7 \times 10^{-8}, 10^{-3}]$ eV, where the lower end is bounded by the seesaw…
We illustrate the structure and the main phenomenological features of a supersymmetric model (the USSM-A) built following a bottom-up approach and containing an anomalous abelian gauge symmetry. This model supports a gauged axion in its spectrum and provides a generalization of the global (supersymmetric) Peccei-Quinn construction. Complete simulations of the neutralino relic density are performed. Bounds from CAST and WMAP, combined with dark matter simulations, provide significant constraints on the scale of the interactions between the axion and the gauge fields.
We compute the dark matter relic densities of neutralinos and axions in a supersymmetric model with a gauged anomalous U(1) symmetry, kinetically mixed with $U(1)_Y$ of hypercharge. The model is a variant of the USSM (the U(1) extended NMSSM), containing an extra U(1) symmetry and an extra singlet in the superpotential respect to the MSSM, where gauge invariance is restored by Peccei-Quinn interactions using a Stuckelberg multiplet. This approach introduces an axion (Im b) and a saxion (Re b) in the spectrum and generates an axino component for the neutralino. The Stuckelberg axion (Im b) deve…
We analyze the most salient cosmological features of axions in extensions of the Standard Model with a gauged anomalous extra U(1) symmetry. The model is built by imposing the constraint of gauge invariance in the anomalous effective action, which is extended with Wess-Zumino counterterms. These generate axion-like interactions of the axions to the gauge fields and a gauged shift symmetry. The scalar sector is assumed to acquire a non-perturbative potential after inflation, at the electroweak phase transition, which induces a mixing of the Stuckelberg field of the model with the scalars of the…
We examine the possibility that the strong CP problem is solved by string-theoretic axions in strong-coupling limit of the E_8 x E_8 heterotic string theory (M-theory). We first discuss some generic features of gauge kinetic functions in compactified M-theory, and examine in detail the axion potential induced by the explicit breakings other than the QCD anomaly of the non-linear U(1)_{PQ} symmetries of string-theoretic axions. It is argued based on supersymmetry and discrete gauge symmetries that if the compactification radius is large enough, there can be a U(1)_{PQ}-symmetry whose breaking o…
We present a novel framework for obtaining large hierarchies in axion decay constants as well as trans-Planckian field excursions, with no need for tuning or a large number of fields. We consider a model with two or more CFTs with a common cutoff, that are linked by a gauged diagonal symmetry. This construction is dual to the geometry of a warped space with two or more throats glued at a common brane, allowing for calculability. Many applications of our setup are possible, such as ultra-light axions, natural inflation, and relaxion models.
We construct a string-inspired model, motivated by the flavored Peccei-Quinn (PQ) axions, as a useful bridge between flavor physics and string theory. The key feature is two anomalous gauged $U(1)$ symmetries, responsible for both the fermion mass hierarchy problem of the standard model and the strong CP problem, that combine string theory with flavor physics and severely constrain the form of the F- and D-term contributions to the potential. In the context of supersymmetric moduli stabilization we stabilize the size moduli with positive masses while leaving two axions massless and one axion m…
We discuss a possibility of restricting parameters in $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity based on axion observations. We derive conditions that prepotential and gauge couplings should satisfy. Such conditions not only allow us to constrain the theory but also provide the lower bound of $\mathcal{N}=2\rightarrow\mathcal{N}=1$ breaking scale.
We report on the gauged supergravity interpretation of certain compactifications of superstring theories with p-form fluxes turned on. We discuss in particular the interplay of duality symmetries in type IIB orientifolds and gauged isometries in the corresponding supergravity models. Turning on fluxes is generally described by the gauging of some nilpotent Lie group whose generators correspond to axion symmetries of R-R and N-S scalars.
We study the possibility of obtaining metastable supersymmetry breaking vacua in a perturbative gauge theory without singlet fields, thus allowing for scenarios where a grand unified symmetry and supersymmetry are broken by the same sector. We show some explicit SU(5) examples. The minimal renormalizable example requires the use of two adjoints, but it is shown to inevitably lead to unwanted light states. We suggest various alternatives, and show that the viable possibilities consist of allowing for non-renormalizable operators, of employing four adjoints or of adding at least one field in a d…
We present supersymmetric solutions for the theory of gauged supergravity in five dimensions obtained by gauging the shift symmetry of the axion of the universal hypermultiplet. This gauged theory can also be obtained by dimensionally reducing M-theory on a Calabi-Yau threefold with background flux. The solution found preserves half of the N=2 supersymmetry, carries electric fields and has nontrivial scalar field representing the CY-volume. We comment on the possible solutions of more general hypermultiplet gauging.
We show that the half-maximal SU(2) gauged supergravity with topological mass term admits coupling of an arbitrary number of n vector multiplets. The chiral circle reduction of the ungauged theory in the dual 2-form formulation gives N=(1,0) supergravity in 6D coupled to 3p scalars that parametrize the coset SO(p,3)/SO(p)x SO(3), a dilaton and (p+3) axions with p < n+1. Demanding that R-symmetry gauging survives in 6D is shown to put severe restrictions on the 7D model, in particular requiring noncompact gaugings. We find that the SO(2,2) and SO(3,1) gauged 7D supergravities give a U(1)_R, and…
We compute the form of the Lagrangian of N=1 supersymmetric theories with gauged axion symmetries. It turns out that there appear generalized Chern-Simons terms that were not considered in previous superspace formulations of general N=1 theories. Such gaugings appear in supergravities arising from flux compactifications of superstrings, as well as from Scherk-Schwarz generalized dimensional reduction in M-theory. We also present the dual superspace formulation where axion chiral multiplets are dualized into linear multiplets.
Nonlinearly realized Abelian global symmetries can be reformulated as local shift symmetries gauged by three-form gauge fields. The anomalous symmetries of the Standard Model (such as Peccei-Quinn or $B+L$) can be dualized to local symmetries gauged by the Chern-Simons three-forms of the Standard Model gauge group. In this description the strong CP problem can be reformulated as the problem of a massless three-form field in QCD, which creates an arbitrary CP-violating constant four-form electric field in the vacuum. Both the axion as well as the massless quark solutions amount to simply Higgsi…
We propose a natural inflation model driven by an imaginary or axionic component of a Kähler modulus in string-inspired supergravity. The shift symmetry of the axion is gauged under an anomalous $U(1)_X$ symmetry, which leads to a modulus-dependent Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term. The matter fields are stabilized by F-terms, and the real component of the modulus is stabilized by the $U(1)_X$ D-term, while its axion remains light. Therefore, the masses of real and imaginary components of the modulus are separated at different scales. The scalar potential for natural inflation is realized by the supe…
We construct exact cosmological scaling solutions in N=8 gauged supergravity. We restrict to solutions for which the scalar fields trace out geodesic curves on the scalar manifold. Under these restrictions it is shown that the axionic scalars are necessarily constant. The potential is then a sum of exponentials and has a very specific form that allows for scaling solutions. The scaling solutions describe eternal accelerating and decelerating power-law universes, which are all unstable. An uplift of the solutions to 11-dimensional supergravity is carried out and the resulting timedependent geom…
We present a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (USSM-A) with an anomalous U(1) and Stueckelberg axions for anomaly cancellation, generalizing similar non-supersymmetric constructions. The model, built by a bottom-up approach, is expected to capture the low-energy supersymmetric description of axionic symmetries in theories with gauged anomalous abelian interactions, previously explored in the non-supersymmetric case for scenarios with intersecting branes. The choice of a USSM-like superpotential, with one extra singlet superfield and an extra abelian symmetry, allows a physical ax…
We present a scale invariant extension of the Standard model allowing for the Kim-Shifman-Vainstein-Zakharov (KSVZ) axion solution of the strong CP problem in QCD. We add the minimal number of new particles and show that the Peccei-Quinn scalar might be identified with the complex dilaton field. Scale invariance, together with the Peccei-Quinn symmetry, is broken spontaneously near the Planck scale before inflation, which is driven by the Standard Model Higgs field. We present a set of general conditions which makes this scenario viable and an explicit example of an effective theory possessing…
We provide a compact review on recent developments on axion $F(R)$ gravity. The axion field is a string theory originating theoretical particle that is a perfect candidate for low-mass particle dark matter. In this review we present how a viable inflationary phenomenology and a viable late-time evolution can be described by an axion $F(R)$ gravity theory, in which the $F(R)$ gravity part can drive in a geometric way the inflationary and the late-time era, and the axion field behaves as dark matter, with its energy density $ρ_a$ behaving as a function of the scale factor as $ρ_a\sim a^{-3}$. We…

Axion-like fields are naturally generated by a mechanism of anomaly cancellation of one or more anomalous gauge abelian symmetries at the Planck scale, emerging as duals of a two-form from the massless bosonic sector of string theory. This suggests an analogy of the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation, at field theory level, which results in one or more Stueckelberg pseudoscalars. In the case of a single Stueckelberg pseudoscalar $b$, vacuum misalignments at phase transitions in the early Universe at the GUT scale provide a small mass - due to instanton suppression of the periodic …
ALP-photon couplings are modeled in large ensembles of string vacua and random matrix theories. In all cases, the effective coupling increases polynomially in the number of ALPs, of which hundreds or thousands are expected in the string ensembles, many of which are ultralight. The expected value of the couplings $g_{aγγ}\simeq 10^{-12}\text{GeV}^{-1} - 10^{-10}\text{GeV}^{-1}$ provide viable targets for future x-ray telescopes and axion helioscopes, and in some cases are already in tension with existing data.

It is quite well known for some time that string inspired axionic terms of the form $ν(ϕ)\tilde{R}R$, known also as Chern-Simons terms, do not affect the scalar perturbations and the background evolution for a flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker Universe. In this paper we study and quantify the implications of the presence of the above term in the context of vacuum $f(R)$. Particularly, we assume that axionic dark matter is present during inflation, and we examine in a quantitative way the effects of axionic Chern-Simons terms on the tensor perturbations. The axion field is quantified in terms of a…
In an ungauged supergravity theory, the presence of a \emph{scalar potential} is allowed only for the minimal $\N=1$ case. In extended supergravities, a non-trivial scalar potential can be introduced without explicitly breaking supersymmetry only through the so-called \emph{gauging procedure}. The latter consists in promoting a suitable global symmetry group to local symmetry to be gauged by the vector fields of the theory. Gauged supergravities provide a valuable approach to the study of superstring flux-compactifications and the construction of phenomenologically viable, string-inspired mode…
Following a phenomenological analysis done by the late Martin Perl for the detection of the dark energy, we show that an axion of energy $1.5\times 10^{-3}~eV/c^2$ can be a viable candidate for the dark energy particle. In particular, we obtain the characteristic length and frequency of the axion as a quantum particle. Then, employing a relation that connects the energy density with the frequency of a particle, i.e., $ρ\sim f^{4}$, we show that the energy density of axions, with the aforesaid value of mass, as obtained from our theoretical analysis is proportional to the dark energy density co…
