Axion-like particles are an important part of the spectrum of anomalous gauge theories involving modified mechanisms of cancellation of the gauge anomalies. Among these are intersecting brane models, which are characterized by the presence of one physical axion. We overview a recent study of their supersymmetric construction and some LHC studies of the productions rates for a gauged axion.
We explore the possibility of searching for axionlike particle (ALP) by $ep$ collisions via the subprocess $e^{-}γ\rightarrow e^{-}a \rightarrow e^{-}γγ$. Sensitivities to the effective ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγγ}$ for its mass in the range of 10 GeV $< M_{a}< 3$ TeV are obtained for the LHeC and its high-energy upgrade, FCC-eh. Comparing to existing bounds on the ALP free parameters, we find that the bounds given by $ep$ colliders are competitive and complementary to other colliders.
We investigate the physics case for a dedicated trigger-level analysis for very low mass diphoton resonances at ATLAS and CMS and introduce a new photon isolation criterion. This greatly increases the acceptance for light particles at the expense of a somewhat larger Standard Model background. We show how such an analysis would likely yield new experimental coverage for axion-like particles for masses below 15 GeV, bridging the gap with the region covered by flavor factories.
We investigate the prospects for discovering axion-like particles (ALPs) via a light-by-light (LBL) scattering at two colliders, the future circular collider (FCC-ee) and circular electron-positron collider (CEPC). The promising sensitivities to the effective ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγγ}$ are obtained. Our numerical results show that the FCC-ee and CEPC might be more sensitive to the ALPs with mass 2 GeV $\sim$ 10 GeV than the LHC and CLIC.
Astrophysical sources of energetic gamma rays provide the right conditions for maximal mixing between (pseudo)scalar (axion-like) particles and photons if their coupling is as strong as suggested by the PVLAS claim. This is independent of whether or not the axion interaction is standard at all energies or becomes supressed in the extreme conditions of the stellar interior. The flux of such particles through the Earth could be observed using a metre long, Tesla strength superconducting solenoid thus testing the axion interpretation of the PVLAS anomaly. The rate of events in CAST caused by axio…
The existence of an axion-like particle (ALP) would induce anomalous scattering of light by light. This process can be probed at the Large Hadron Collider in central exclusive production of photon pairs in proton-proton collisions by tagging the surviving protons using forward proton detectors. Using a detailed simulation, we estimate the expected bounds on the ALP--photon coupling for a wide range of masses. We show that the proposed search is competitive and complementary to other collider bounds for masses above 600 GeV, especially for resonant ALP production between 600 GeV and 2 TeV. Our …
Strong mixing between photons and axion-like particles in the magnetic fields of clusters of galaxies induces a scatter in the observed luminosities of compact sources in the cluster. This is used to construct a new test for axion-like particles; applied to observations of active galactic nuclei it is strongly suggestive of the existence of a light axion-like particle.
We study the discovery potential for heavy axion-like particles (ALPs) and the perspectives for determining their coupling properties at a muon collider. Focusing on their couplings to the Standard Model (SM) gauge bosons $γ, Z, W^\pm$, we show that a high-energy muon collider can substantially extend the mass coverage, essentially reaching the kinematic limit of the collider energy. The unique kinematics allow for non-ambiguous determination of the individual coupling strengths. The associated production via $μ^+μ^-$ annihilation and the VBF processes with the tagged outgoing muons can be uti…
We consider a possibility to observe the axion emission from a nearby supernova (SN) in the future, which can be known in advance by the pre-SN alert system, by collider detectors like the LHC detectors (i.e., the ATLAS and the CMS) and the ILC detectors (i.e., the ILD and SiD). The axion from the SN can be converted to the photon by the strong magnetic field in the detector and the photon can be detected by electromagnetic calorimeter. We estimate the numbers of signal and background events due to a nearby SN and show that the number of signal may be sizable. The axion emission from a nearby …
One kind of particularly interesting pseudoscalar particles, called axion-like particles (ALPs), have rich physical phenomenology at high- and low-energy collider experiments. After discussing most of single production channels of ALP at electron-positron colliders, we investigate the possibility of detecting this kind of new particles through the W$^{+}$W$^{-}$ fusion process e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ $\rightarrow$ $\overlineν_{e}$$ν_{e}a$ $(\rightarrow γγ)$ at the CLIC. The 3$σ$ and 5$σ$ bounds on the ALP parameter space at the three energy stages of the CLIC are obtained. We find that the bounds given…
We report on a search for ultra-low-mass axion-like dark matter by analysing the ratio of the spin-precession frequencies of stored ultracold neutrons and $^{199}$Hg atoms for an axion-induced oscillating electric dipole moment of the neutron and an axion-wind spin-precession effect. No signal consistent with dark matter is observed for the axion mass range $10^{-24}~\textrm{eV} \le m_a \le 10^{-17}~\textrm{eV}$. Our null result sets the first laboratory constraints on the coupling of axion dark matter to gluons, which improve on astrophysical limits by up to 3 orders of magnitude, and also im…
We propose to search for axion dark matter via the oscillating electric dipole moments that axions induce in atoms and molecules. These moments are produced through the intrinsic oscillating electric dipole moments of nucleons and through the $P,T$-violating nucleon-nucleon interaction mediated by pion exchange, both of which arise due to the axion-gluon coupling, and also directly through the axion-electron interaction. Axion dark matter may also be sought for through the spin-precession effects that axions produce by directly coupling to fermion spins.
Using microwave cavities one can build a resonant ``light-shining-through-walls'' experiment to search for hidden sector photons and axion like particles, predicted in many extensions of the standard model. In this note we make a feasibility study of the sensitivities which can be reached using state of the art technology.
The axion dark matter echo technique, proposed in Ref. [1], aims to search for axion dark matter by detecting the electromagnetic echo coming from stimulated decay of ambient axion dark matter interacting with a radio-microwave outgoing beam. In this work we consider deviations from the standard halo model (SHM) in the form of fine grained streams that are present in the solar system and use them as a target for the axion echo method, which demonstrates to be very sensitive to particular local axion dark matter phase space distributions. We show that the extremely small dispersion of the strea…
We discuss the sensitivity of the present and near-future axion dark matter experiments to a halo of axions or axion-like particles gravitationally bound to the Earth or the Sun. The existence of such halos, assuming they are formed, renders a significant gain in the sensitivity of axion searches while satisfying all the present experimental bounds. The structure and coherence properties of these halos also imply novel signals, which can depend on the latitude or orientation of the detector. We demonstrate this by analysing the sensitivity of several distinct types of axion dark matter experim…
The current status of the QUAX R\&D program is presented. QUAX is a feasibility study for a detection of axion as dark matter based on the coupling to the electrons. The relevant signal is a magnetization change of a magnetic material placed inside a resonant microwave cavity and polarized with a static magnetic field.
In our previous work [Phys. Rev. D 101 (2020) 075046], we have proposed to install FAr Detectors at the Electron Positron Collider (FADEPC) to enhance the discovery potential of long-lived particles (LLPs). In this study, we consider eight designs of far detectors with different locations, volumes and geometries and investigate their potential for discovering long-lived axion-like particles (ALPs) via the process $e^-e^+ \rightarrow γ\,\, a,~ a \to γγ$ at future $e^{-}e^{+}$ colliders running at a center-of-mass energy of 91.2 GeV and integrated luminosities of 16, 150, and 750 ab$^{-1}$. We e…
We consider the possibility of constraining the lifetime of radiatively decaying dark matter particles in clusters of galaxies inspired from generic axions of the Kaluza-Klein type. Such axions have been invoked as a possible explanation for the coronal X-ray emission from the Sun. These axions, or similar particles, can be produced inside stars and some of them remain confined by the deep gravitational potential of clusters of galaxies. Specifically, we consider regions within merging galaxy clusters (Abell 520 and the "Bullet Cluster"), where gravitational lensing observations have identifie…
We investigate the production of fourth generation neutrino in the context of new $e ν_4 W$ magnetic dipole moment type interaction in $ep$ collisions at the future lepton-hadron colliders. We have obtained the mass limits of 700 GeV for THERA ($\sqrt S$=1 TeV) and 2.8 TeV for LC$\otimes$ LHC ($\sqrt S$=3.74 TeV).
We explore a novel detection possibility for solar axions, which relies only on their couplings to nucleons, via the axion-induced dissociation of deuterons into their constituent neutrons and protons. An opportune target for this process is the now-concluded Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) experiment, which relied upon large quantities of heavy water to resolve the solar neutrino problem. From the full SNO dataset we exclude in a model-independent fashion isovector axion-nucleon couplings $|g^3_{aN}|\equiv\frac{1}{2}|g_{an}-g_{ap}|>2\times10^{-5}$GeV${}^{-1}$ at 95 % C.L. for sub-MeV axion…
We present a model where the QCD axion is at the TeV scale and visible at a collider via its decays. Conformal dynamics and strong CP considerations account for the axion coupling strongly enough to the standard model to be produced as well as the coincidence between the weak scale and the axion mass. The model predicts additional pseudoscalar color octets whose properties are completely determined by the axion properties rendering the theory testable.
We discuss the production of new matter particles that are predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model, at future high--energy pp, eP and $e^+e^-$ linear colliders. We focus on the case of exotic, excited and di--fermions. Talk given at "Beyond the Standard Model IV", Lake Tahoe, Ca., December 1994.
We propose a search for long lived axion-like particles (ALPs) in exotic top decays. Flavour-violating ALPs appear as low energy effective theories for various new physics scenarios such as t-channel dark sectors or Froggatt-Nielsen models. In this case the top quark may decay to an ALP and an up- or charm-quark. For masses in the few GeV range, the ALP is long lived across most of the viable parameter space, suggesting a dedicated search. We propose to search for these long lived ALPs in $t\bar{t}$ events, using one top quark as a trigger. We focus on ALPs decaying in the hadronic calorimeter…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken global symmetries in high-energy extensions of the Standard Model (SM). This makes them a prime target for future experiments aiming to discover new physics which addresses some of the open questions of the SM. While future high-precision experiments can discover ALPs with masses well below the GeV scale, heavier ALPs can be searched for at future high-energy lepton and hadron colliders. We discuss the reach of the different proposed colliders, focusing on resonant ALP production, ALP production in the decay …
We show that ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions at the LHC can be used to search for axion-like particles with mass below 100 GeV. The $Z^4$ enhanced photon-photon luminosity from the ions provides a large exclusive production rate, with a signature of a resonant pair of back-to-back photons and no other activity in the detector. In addition, we present both new and updated limits from recasting multi-photon searches at LEP II and the LHC, which are more stringent than those currently in the literature for the mass range 100 MeV to 100 GeV.
X-ray telescopes are an exceptional tool for searching for new fundamental physics. In particular, X-ray observations have already placed world-leading bounds on the interaction between photons and axion-like particles (ALPs). ALPs are hypothetical new ultra-light particles motivated by string theory models. They can also act as dark matter and dark energy, and provide a solution to the strong CP problem. In a background magnetic field, ALPs and photons may interconvert. This leads to energy dependent modulations in both the flux and polarisation of the spectra of point sources shining through…
We examine the sensitivity of the process e+e- -> nu nubar + gamma to additional W-like bosons which arise in various models. The process is found to be sensitive to W' masses up to several TeV.
We establish strong gravitational lens systems as robust probes of axion-like particles (ALPs) -- a candidate for dark matter. A tiny interaction of photons with ALPs induces birefringence. Multiple images of gravitationally lensed polarised objects allow differential birefringence measurement, alleviating systematics and astrophysical dependencies. We apply this novel method to the lens system CLASS B1152+199 and constrain ALP-photon coupling $\le 9.2\times 10^{-11}\, {\rm GeV}^{-1} \textrm{ to } 7.7\times 10^{-8}\, {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ ($95\%$ C.L.) for ALP mass between $3.6\times 10^{-21} \,{\rm…
Axionlike particles (ALPs) emerge from spontaneously broken global symmetries in high energy extensions of the Standard Model (SM). This causes ALPs to be among the objectives of future experiments which intend to search for new physics beyond the SM. We discuss the reach of future pp collider FCC-hh in probing the ALP model parameters through top quark pair production associated with ALP ($t\bar{t}+\text{ALP}$) in a model-independent approach. The search is performed in the semileptonic decay mode of $t\bar{t}$ and the analysis is performed using a parametric simulation of the detector respon…
We present a proposal to search for QCD axions with mass in the 200 $μ$eV range, assuming that they make a dominant component of dark matter. Due to the axion-electron spin coupling, their effect is equivalent to the application of an oscillating rf field with frequency and amplitude fixed by the axion mass and coupling respectively. This equivalent magnetic field would produce spin flips in a magnetic sample placed inside a static magnetic field, which determines the resonant interaction at the Larmor frequency. Spin flips would subsequently emit radio frequency photons that can be detected b…
We present a study of a class of effective actions which show typical axion-like interactions, and of their possible effects at the Large Hadron Collider. One important feature of these models is the presence of one pseudoscalar which is a generalization of the Peccei-Quinn axion. This can be very light and very weakly coupled, with a mass which is unrelated to its couplings to the gauge fields, described by Wess Zumino interactions. We discuss two independent realizations of these models, one derived from the theory of intersecting branes and the second one obtained by decoupling one chiral f…
In this work we consider searches for dark matter made of axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) using resonant radio frequency cavities inserted into dipole magnets from particle accelerators, wiggler magnets developed for accelerator based advanced light sources, and toroidal magnets similar to those used in particle physics detectors. We investigate the expected sensitivity of such ALP dark matter detectors and discuss the engineering aspects of building and tuning them. Brief mention is also made of even stronger field magnets that are becoming available due to improvements in magnetic tech…
Lorentz violation has been a popular field in recent years in the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. We present a general method to build all Lorentz-violating terms in gauge field theories, including ones involving operators of arbitrary mass dimension. Applying these results to two types of experiments in high-energy colliders, light-by-light scattering and deep-inelastic scattering, we extract first bounds on certain coefficients for Lorentz violation.
Primordial decays of string theory moduli at z \sim 10^{12} naturally generate a dark radiation Cosmic Axion Background (CAB) with 0.1 - 1 keV energies. This CAB can be detected through axion-photon conversion in astrophysical magnetic fields to give quasi-thermal excesses in the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray bands. Substantial and observable luminosities may be generated even for axion-photon couplings \ll 10^{-11} GeV^{-1}. We propose that axion-photon conversion may explain the observed excess emission of soft X-rays from galaxy clusters, and may also contribute to the diffuse unresolv…

We construct a new framework to calculate the enhancement of axion masses and concomitant effects on axion-meson mixing arising from small size instantons (SSIs), which originate in models featuring an extended color gauge symmetry. The framework is based on an explicit evaluation of 't Hooft determinantal operators that partition into instanton amplitudes, affording a more precise determination of the axion-diphoton coupling than previous results. Using an explicit model first presented in Ref. arXiv:1805.06465, we demonstrate that axions solving the strong CP problem can have electroweak sca…
We review searches for closed string axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) in IIB string flux compactifications. For natural values of the background fluxes and TeV scale gravitino mass, the moduli stabilisation mechanism of the LARGE Volume Scenario predicts the existence of a QCD axion candidate with intermediate scale decay constant, f_a ~ 10^9 ... 10^12 GeV, associated with the small cycles wrapped by the branes hosting the visible sector, plus a nearly massless and nearly decoupled ALP associated with the LARGE cycle. In setups where the visible sector branes are wrapping more than the m…
If in addition to the standard model fields, a new pseudoscalar field that couples to hypercharge topological number density, the hypercharge axion, exists, it can be produced in colliders in association with photons or Z bosons, and detected by looking for its decay into photons or Z's. For a range of masses below a TeV and coupling above a fraction of 1/TeV, existing data from LEP II and the Tevatron can already put interesting constraints, and in future colliders accessible detection range is increased significantly. The hypercharge axion can help in explaining the matter-antimatter asymmet…
Axion-like particles are a broad class of dark matter candidates which are expected to behave as a coherent, classical field with a weak coupling to photons. Research into the detectability of these particles with laser interferometers has recently revealed a number of promising experimental designs. Inspired by these ideas, we propose the Axion Detection with Birefringent Cavities (ADBC) experiment, a new axion interferometry concept using a cavity that exhibits birefringence between its two, linearly polarized laser eigenmodes. This experimental concept overcomes several limitations of the d…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons associated with spontaneously broken global symmetries emerging in many extensions of the Standard Model. Assuming the most general effective Lagrangian up to dimension-5 operators for an ALP interacting with the SM fields, we investigate for the first time the sensitivity of the LHC13 to the ALP production in association with a di-jet. This study is focused on light ALPs which appear as invisible particles at the detector. Performing a realistic detector simulation and deploying a multivariate technique to best discriminate the sig…
We correct our treatment of decays of the lightest chargino to final states containing the lightest neutralino in the case where the chargino and neutralino masses differ by less than 1 GeV. A brief summary of the phenomenological implications is given.
We investigate the potential of a high-energy $γγ$ collider to detect an anomalous $\bar t q γ$ coupling from observation of the reaction $γγ\to t\bar q$, $\bar t q$, where $q=c$ or $u$. We find that with $b$-tagging and suitable kinematic cuts this process should be observable if the anomalous coupling $κ/Λ$ is no less than about 0.05/TeV, where $Λ$ is the scale of new physics associated with the anomalous interaction. This improves upon the bound possible from observation of top decays at the Tevatron.
A high energy muon collider can provide new and complementary discovery potential to the LHC or future hadron colliders. Leptoquarks are a motivated class of exotic new physics models, with distinct production channels at hadron and lepton machines. We study a vector leptoquark model at a muon collider with $\sqrt{s} = 3, 14$ TeV within a set of both UV and phenomenologically motivated flavor scenarios. We compute which production mechanism has the greatest reach for various values of the leptoquark mass and the coupling between leptoquark and Standard Model fermions. We find that we can probe…
Considering the theoretical constraints on the charged-current (CC) non-standard neutrino interaction (NSI) parameters in a simplified $W'$ model, we study the sensitivities of the Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) and Future Circular Collider-hadron electron (FCC-he) to the CC NSI parameters through the subprocess $e^{-}q \to W' \to v_{e}q'$. Our results show that the LHeC with $\mathcal{L} = 100\;{\rm fb}^{-1}$ is a little more sensitive to the CC NSI parameters than that of the high-luminosity (HL) LHC, and the absolute values of the lower limits on the CC NSI parameters at the FCC-he a…
I overview the status of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking problem, paying special attention to the possible signals of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider (and at a Linear Collider)
