We study the discovery potential for heavy axion-like particles (ALPs) and the perspectives for determining their coupling properties at a muon collider. Focusing on their couplings to the Standard Model (SM) gauge bosons $γ, Z, W^\pm$, we show that a high-energy muon collider can substantially extend the mass coverage, essentially reaching the kinematic limit of the collider energy. The unique kinematics allow for non-ambiguous determination of the individual coupling strengths. The associated production via $μ^+μ^-$ annihilation and the VBF processes with the tagged outgoing muons can be utilized to verify the CP property of the ALPs. We illustrate our results for a muon collider running at 3 TeV and 10 TeV.
In this white paper for the Snowmass process, we discuss the prospects of probing new physics explanations of the persistent rare $B$ decay anomalies with a muon collider. If the anomalies are indirect signs of heavy new physics, non-standard rates for $μ^+ μ^- \to b s$ production should be observed with high significance at a muon collider with center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 10$ TeV. The forward-backward asymmetry of the $b$-jet provides diagnostics of the chirality structure of the new physics couplings. In the absence of a signal, $μ^+ μ^- \to b s$ can indirectly probe new physics sca…
We sketch recent progress and promising future directions for research connected with the strong CP problem. Topics surveyed include axion dark matter substructure and its gravitational detection; axion model building and the quality problem; experimental tests of ultraviolet solutions; and connections to lattice QCD.
In a previous publication, we showed that a high energy muon collider can make decisive statements about the electroweak (WIMP) Dark Matter (DM), reaching a DM mass which could give the observed thermal relic abundance. In this document, we report new studies of the spin-$0$ minimal WIMP DM at high energy muon colliders, and update our results on the fermionic spin-$1/2$ case. We find that, by combining multiple inclusive missing mass search channels, it is possible to fully cover the thermal targets of fermionic and scalar doublets, and Dirac triplet, with a 10 TeV muon collider. Higher energ…
We present a flexible framework for interpretation of SUSY sensitivity studies for future colliders in terms of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM). We perform a grand scan of the pMSSM 19-dimensional parameter space that covers the accessible ranges of many collider scenarios, including electron, muon, and hadron colliders at a variety of center of mass energies. This enables comparisons of sensitivity and complementarity across different future experiments, including both colliders and precision measurements in the Cosmological and Rare Frontiers. The details o…
In this white paper for the Snowmass process, we summarize the role flavor model building plays in the quest for new physics. We review approaches to address the non-generic flavor structure of the Standard Model and discuss how new physics models can be made compatible with the stringent constraints from flavor changing processes that indirectly probe very high scales. We also give an overview of the persistent anomalies in B decays and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and some of their most popular new physics explanations.

There is a strong possibility that the particles making up the dark matter in the Universe have a mass below 1 eV and in many important situations exhibit a wave-like behavior. Amongst the candidates the axion stands out as particularly well motivated but other possibilities such as axion-like particles, light scalars and light vectors, should be seriously investigated with both experiments and theory. Discovery of any of these dark matter particles would be revolutionary. The wave-like nature opens special opportunities to gain precise information on the particle properties a well as astrophy…
The discrepancy between the muon $g-2$ measurement and the Standard Model prediction points to new physics around or below the weak scale. It is tantalizing to consider the loop effects of a heavy axion (in the general sense, also known as an axion-like particle) coupling to leptons and photons as an explanation for this discrepancy. We provide an updated analysis of the necessary couplings, including two-loop contributions, and find that the new physics operators point to an axion decay constant on the order of 10s of GeV. This poses major problems for such an explanation, as the axion coupli…
We propose a new scenario of using the dark axion portal at one-loop level to explain the recently observed muon anomalous magnetic moment by the Fermilab Muon g-2 experiment. Both axion/axion-like particle (ALP) and dark photon are involved in the same vertex with photon. Although ALP or dark photon alone cannot explain muon $g-2$, since the former provides only negative contribution while the latter has very much constrained parameter space, dark axion portal can save the situation and significantly extend the allowed parameter space. The observed muon anomalous magnetic moment provides a ro…
Dark matter can be part of a dark sector with non-minimal couplings to the Standard Model. Compared to many (minimal) benchmark models, such scenarios can result in significant modifications in experimental signatures and strongly impact experimental search sensitivity. In this white paper, we review several non-minimal dark sector models, including phenomenological consequences: models explaining $(g-2)_μ$, inelastic dark matter, strongly interacting massive particles as dark matter candidates, and axions with flavorful couplings. The present exclusions and projected experimental sensitivitie…
The search for CP violation in interactions of the Higgs boson with either fermions or bosons provides attractive reference measurements in the Particle Physics Community Planning Exercise (a.k.a. "Snowmass"). Benchmark measurements of CP violation provide a limited and well-defined set of parameters that could be tested at the proton, electron-positron, photon, and muon colliders, and compared to those achieved through study of virtual effects in electric dipole moment measurements. We review the current status of these CP-sensitive studies and provide projections to future measurements.
Data from the Muon g-2 experiment and measurements of the fine structure constant suggest that the anomalous magnetic moments of the muon and electron are at odds with standard model expectations. We survey the ability of axion-like-particles, two-Higgs-doublet models and leptoquarks to explain the discrepancies. We find that accounting for other constraints, all scenarios except the Type-I, Type-II and Type-Y two-Higgs-doublet models fit the data well.
Plots summarizing the constraints on Dark Matter models can help visualize synergies between different searches for the same kind of experiment, as well as between different experiments. In this whitepaper, we present an update to the European Strategy Briefing Book plots, from the perspective of collider searches within the Dark Matter at the Energy Frontier (EF10) Snowmass Topical Group, starting from inputs from future collider facilities. We take as a starting point the plots currently made for LHC searches using benchmark models recommended by the Dark Matter Working Group, also used for …
New light particles produced in supernovae can lead to additional energy loss and a consequent deficit in neutrino production in conflict with the neutrinos observed from Supernova 1987A (SN1987A). Contrary to the majority of previous SN1987A studies, we examine the impact of $Z'$ bosons, axions, and axion-like particles (ALPs) interacting with the muons produced in SN1987A. For the first time, we find constraints on generic $Z'$ bosons coupled to muons, and apply our results to particle models including gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ number, $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$, and gauged $B-L$ number, $U(1)_{B-L}$. We const…
We have examined the sensitivity to the axion-like particle (ALP) couplings to electroweak gauge bosons in the diphoton production at a future muon collider. The collisions at the $μ^+ μ^-$ energies of 3 TeV, 14 TeV, and 100 TeV are addressed. The differential cross sections versus the invariant mass of the final photons and total cross section versus minimal diphoton invariant mass are presented. We have derived the exclusion regions for the ALP-gauge boson coupling. The obtained bounds are much stronger than the current experimental bounds in the ALP mass region 10 GeV -- 10 TeV. The partial…
We consider a muonphilic axion-like-particle (ALP), denoted as $a$, lighter than twice the muon mass. ALPs of this mass range dominantly decay into a pair of photons, induced by a triangular muon loop. Such light muonphilic ALPs are naturally long-lived. At the atmosphere, the ALPs are copiously produced from charged-meson decays in air showers, such as $π^\pm \to μ^\pm νa$, via the ALP-muon coupling $g_{aμμ}$. After propagating tens of kilometers, the ALPs decay with $a\to γγ$ inside large-volume Cherenkov detectors near the Earth's surface, such as Super-Kamiokande (SK). We find the present …
We discuss new physics phenomenology of hidden scalar ($S$), pseudoscalar ($P$), vector ($V$) and axial-vector ($A$) particles coupled to nucleons and leptons, which could give contributions to proton charge radius, $(g-2)_μ$, $^8$Be-$^4$He anomaly and electric dipole moment (EDM) of Standard Model (SM) particles. In particular, we estimate sensitivity of NA64$μ$ experiment to observe muon missing energy events involving hidden scalar and vector particles. That analysis is based on {\tt GEANT4} Monte Carlo simulation of the signal process of muon scattering off target nuclei $μN \to μN S(V)$ f…

Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are among of the most popular candidates for dark matter. Axions are also considered as new physics contributions to the muon g-2. Following the existed interest to ALPs we consider interaction between neutrinos and hypothetical axion-like particles and derive for the first time the probability of neutrino oscillations accounting for their interactions mediated by ALPs. The corresponding effective mixing angle is derived.
The Tera-Z phase of future $e^+ e^-$ colliders, FCC-ee and CepC, is a goldmine for exploring $Z$ portal physics. We focus on axion-like particles (ALPs) that can be produced via $Z$ decays with a monochromatic photon. As a template model, we consider composite Higgs models with a light pseudo-scalar that couples through the Wess-Zumino-Witten term to the electroweak gauge bosons. For both photophilic and photophobic cases, we show that the Tera-Z can probe composite scales up to $100$s of TeV, well beyond the capability of the LHC and current precision physics. Our results also apply to generi…
The $μ^+ \to e^+ X$ decay, where $X$ is a dark sector boson, provides one of the strongest available bounds on the scale of dark sector interactions. The $X$ boson can be an axion or a dark photon. We show that the concurrent determination of the anti-muon and positron polarizations makes possible to distinguish with a confidence level of 99% between the two dark sector portals with as few as 6 observed events in the case of the massless dark photon. Instead, the massive spin-1, dimension 4 dark portal cannot be distinguished from the axion-like case. We also discuss the possibility that the $…
We discuss how LHC di-muon data collected to study $B_q \to μμ$ can be used to constrain light particles with flavour-violating couplings to $b$-quarks. Focussing on the case of a flavoured QCD axion, $a$, we compute the decay rates for $B_q \to μμa$ and the SM background process $B_q \to μμγ$ near the kinematic endpoint. These rates depend on non-perturbative $B_q \to γ^{(*)}$ form factors with on- or off-shell photons. The off-shell form factors -- relevant for generic searches for beyond-the-SM particles -- are discussed in full generality and computed with QCD sum rules for the first time.…
The link between ordinary Standard model (SM) photon and both dark photon and axion like particle (ALP) can be introduced through the dark axion portal coupling. Given the dark axion portal setup, in the present paper we refer the dark photon as the mediator between SM and dark matter (DM) particles, implying that it decays predominantly into pair of DM fermions. Furthermore, we discuss in detail the implication of the dark axion portal scenario for the lepton (electron and muon) fixed target experiments. In particular, for the specific fixed target facility we study the missing energy signatu…
