We discuss a possibility that a superconformal dynamics induces the emergence of a global $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry to solve the strong CP problem through the axion. Fields spontaneously breaking the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry couple to new quarks charged under the ordinary color $SU(3)_C$ and a new $SU(N)$ gauge group. The theory flows into an IR fixed point where the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ breaking fields hold a large anomalous dimension leading to the suppression of $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$-violating higher dimensional operators. The spontaneous breaking of the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ makes the new quarks massive. The $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry is anomalous under the $SU(3)_C$ but not under the $SU(N)$ so that the axion couples to only the color $SU(3)_C$ and the usual axion potential is generated. We also comment on a model that the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ breaking fields are realized as meson superfields in a new supersymmetric QCD.
We present a 5D axion-neutrino model that explains the Standard Model fermion mass hierarchy and flavor structure, while simultaneously generating a high-quality axion. The axion and right-handed neutrinos transform under a 5D Peccei-Quinn gauge symmetry, and have highly suppressed profiles on the UV brane where the symmetry is explicitly broken. This setup allows neutrinos to be either Dirac, or Majorana with hierarchically small sterile neutrino masses. The axion decay constant originates from the IR scale, which in the holographically dual 4D description corresponds to the confinement scale…
Motivated by recent discussions and the absence of exact global symmetries in UV completions of gravity we re-examine the axion quality problem (and naturalness issues more generally) using antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond (KR) fields rather than their pseudoscalar duals, as suggested by string and higher dimensional theories. Two types of axions can be identified: a model independent $S$-type axion dual to a two form $B_{μν}$ in 4D and a $T$-type axion coming directly as 4D scalar Kaluza-Klein (KK) components of higher-dimensional tensor fields. For $T$-type axions our conclusions largely agree with…
The idea that the gravity-induced breaking of global symmetries is encoded in Planck-suppressed operators is not scale-invariant: heavy particles which have nothing to do with the UV completion of gravity can mediate the breaking and produce low-energy operators (partly) suppressed by their own mass scales. Such contributions from heavy fields are typically subdominant with respect to the least Planck-suppressed operators, unless the latter are forbidden, as is usual in solutions to the axion quality problem based on four-dimensional gauge symmetries. Therefore, with a focus on axion physics, …
In this work, we discuss how the use of the symmetries well motivated in physics beyond the Standard model (BSM) can guarantee the high quality axions. We avoid to introduce symmetries only useful for addressing the axion quality problem. Rather, we rely on symmetries well motivated by other issues in BSM: supersymmetry, $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ and the discrete R-symmetry $Z_{NR}$. We show that the interplay among these guarantees the high quality of the axion even for the gravitino mass and axion decay constant as large as $m_{3/2}=\mathcal{O}(10){\rm TeV}$ and $F_{a}=\mathcal{O}(10^{15}){\rm GeV}$ …
We explore a new framework that furnishes a mechanism to simultaneously address the electroweak naturalness problem and the axion high quality problem. The framework is based on a doubly composite dynamics where the second confinement takes place after the CFT encounters the first confinement and the theory flows into another conformal fixed point. For a calculable example, we present a holographic dual description of the 4D model via a warped extra dimension model with three 3-branes. While the hierarchy problem is taken cared of by the localization of the Higgs fields on the TeV brane just a…
An accidental U(1) Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry automatically arises in a class of SO(10) unified theories upon gauging the SU(3)$_{f}$ flavour group. The PQ symmetry is protected by the $\mathbb{Z}_4 \times \mathbb{Z}_3$ center of $\text{SO(10)} \times \text{SU(3)}_f$ up to effective operators of canonical dimension six. However, high-scale contributions to the axion potential posing a PQ quality problem arise only at $d=9$. In the pre-inflationary PQ breaking scenario the axion mass window is predicted to be $m_a \in [7 \times 10^{-8}, 10^{-3}]$ eV, where the lower end is bounded by the seesaw…
Continuous global symmetries are expected to be broken by gravity, which can lead to important phenomenological consequences. A prime example is the threat that this poses to the viability of the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem. In this paper, we explore the impact of wormholes as a source of global symmetry breaking by gravity. We review the current status of wormholes and global symmetries and note that, surprisingly, the axion has a quality problem within non-perturbative Einstein gravity. Although these wormholes lead to a large breaking of global symmetries, we show that th…
The axion solution to the strong CP problem is delicately sensitive to Peccei-Quinn breaking contributions that are misaligned with respect to QCD instantons. Heavy QCD axion models are appealing because they avoid this so-called "quality problem". We show that generic realizations of this framework can be probed by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA interferometers, through the stochastic gravitational wave (GW) signal sourced by the long-lived axionic string-domain wall network, and by upcoming measurements of the neutron and proton Electric Dipole Moments. Additionally, we provide predictions for searche…
Global symmetries are expected to be violated by gravity, which may cause a serious problem to models based on these symmetries. A famous example is the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem in QCD axion models; it requires a global U(1) symmetry to be respected with high quality, and even the Planck-scale suppressed operators that violate the U(1) symmetry would spoil this solution. Indeed, it is known that gravitational instantons do break the U(1) Peccei-Quinn symmetry and induce the U(1)-violating operators, bringing back the strong CP problem to the axion models. This conclusion …

We propose an ${\rm SU}(6)$ unified theory that solves the strong ${\it CP}$ problem with a high-quality axion. This is achieved by an automatic global Peccei-Quinn ${\rm U}(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry and the gauged discrete $\mathbb{Z}_{4{\cal R}}$ symmetry. With the axion mass predictions of $m_a \sim {\cal O}(10^{-3} ) - {\cal O}(0.1) \,{\rm eV}$, as well as a universal axion-photon coupling in the unification models, the QCD axion can be probed in the upcoming experiments of IAXO. An intermediate gauge symmetry breaking scale characterized by the axion decay constant is obtained by the Peccei-Q…
We show that the required high quality of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry can be naturally explained in the aligned QCD axion models where the QCD axion arises from multiple axions with decay constants much smaller than the axion window, e.g., around the weak scale. Even in the presence of general Planck-suppressed Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking operators, the effective strong CP phase remains sufficiently small in contrast to the standard axion models without the alignment. The QCD axion potential has small or large modulations due to the symmetry breaking operators, which can significantly affect …
We investigate what it takes for the axion to address the strong CP problem in the presence of explicit Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking effects besides the strong interaction. In cases where the PQ-Higgsing scalar field directly couples to the Standard Model sector, it is pointed out that existing fifth force experiments can set better constraints on the axion quality over neutron electric dipole moment.
The strong CP problem is a compelling motivation for physics beyond the Standard Model. The most popular solutions invoke a global Peccei-Quinn symmetry, but are challenged by quantum gravitational corrections which are thought to be incompatible with global symmetries, arguing that realistic theories contain additional structure. We explore a construction in which the Peccei-Quinn symmetry is protected to arbitrary order by virtue of a supersymmetric, confining $SU(N)_L \times SU(N) \times SU(N)_R \times U(1)_X$ product gauge group, achieving $\barθ< 10^{-11}$ for an $SU(5)$ model with $f_a \…
We propose two models where a U(1) Peccei-Quinn global symmetry arises accidentally and is respected up to high-dimensional operators, so that the axion solution to the strong CP problem is successful even in the presence of Planck-suppressed operators. One model is SU$(N)$ gauge interactions with fermions in the fundamental and a scalar in the symmetric. The axion arises from spontaneous symmetry breaking to SO$(N)$, that confines at a lower energy scale. Axion quality in the model needs $N \gtrsim 10$. SO bound states and possibly monopoles provide extra Dark Matter candidates beyond the axi…
Composite axion scenarios offer a robust field theoretic justification for the existence of a Peccei-Quinn symmetry of high quality. We present a new class of realizations that are naturally embedded in Grand-Unified Theories, retain asymptotic freedom for all gauge groups, and protect the axion symmetry up to operators of dimension 12. Our setup leads to a number of distinctive signatures at low energies. First, additional composite scalars are predicted; some of these are viable dark matter candidates for values of the axion decay constant that are too low for the QCD axion abundance to be r…
The axion provides a compelling solution to the strong CP problem as well as a candidate for the dark matter of the universe. However, the axion solution relies on the spontaneous breaking of a global $U(1)_{PQ}$ symmetry, which is also explicitly violated by quantum gravity. To preserve the axion solution, gravitational violations of the $U(1)_{PQ}$ symmetry must be suppressed to sufficiently high order. We present a simple, geometric solution of the axion quality problem by modelling the axion with a bulk complex scalar field in a slice of AdS$_5$, where the $U(1)_{PQ}$ symmetry is spontaneo…
Any would-be Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is vulnerable to various types of explicit breaking. It has long been recognized that these can disrupt the axion solution to the strong CP problem. There have also been suggestions that, under certain circumstances, these can lead to a surprisingly large mass for the axion. Two types of corrections to this computation have been widely considered: higher dimension symmetry breaking operators, in theories where there is a complex field responsible for the spontaneous breaking of the PQ symmetry, and small instantons. Motivated by situations where small in…

The QCD axion provides an elegant solution to the Strong CP Problem. While the minimal realization is vulnerable to the so-called "Axion Quality Problem", we will consider a more robust realization in the presence of a mirror sector related to the Standard Model by a (softly broken) $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We point out that the resulting "heavy" axion, while satisfying all theoretical and observational constraints, has a large and uncharted parameter space which allows it to be probed at the LHC as a Long-Lived Particle (LLP). The small defining axionic coupling to gluons results in a challen…
Solutions to the $μ$ problem in supersymmetry based on the Kim-Nilles mechanism naturally feature a Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky (DFSZ) axion with decay constant of order the geometric mean of the Planck and TeV scales, consistent with astrophysical limits. We investigate minimal models of this type with two gauge-singlet fields that break a Peccei-Quinn symmetry, and extensions with extra vectorlike quark and lepton supermultiplets consistent with gauge coupling unification. We show that there are many anomaly-free discrete symmetries, depending on the vectorlike matter content, that pr…

Heavy QCD axions are well-motivated extensions of the QCD axion that address the quality problem while still solving the strong CP problem. Owing to the gluon coupling, critical for solving the strong CP problem, these axions can be produced in significant numbers in beam dump and collider environments for axion decay constants as large as PeV, relevant for addressing the axion quality problem. In addition, if these axions have leptonic couplings, they can give rise to long-lived decay into lepton pairs, in particular, dominantly into muons above the dimuon threshold and below the GeV scale in…
