Motivated by recent discussions and the absence of exact global symmetries in UV completions of gravity we re-examine the axion quality problem (and naturalness issues more generally) using antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond (KR) fields rather than their pseudoscalar duals, as suggested by string and higher dimensional theories. Two types of axions can be identified: a model independent $S$-type axion dual to a two form $B_{μν}$ in 4D and a $T$-type axion coming directly as 4D scalar Kaluza-Klein (KK) components of higher-dimensional tensor fields. For $T$-type axions our conclusions largely agree with earlier workers for the axion quality problem, but we also reconcile why $T$-type axions can couple to matter localized on 3-branes with Planck suppressed strength even when the axion decay constants are of order the KK scale. For $S$-type axions, we review the duality between form fields and massive scalars and show how duality impacts naturalness arguments about the UV sensitivity of the scalar potential. In particular UV contributions on the KR side suppress contributions on the scalar side by powers of $m/M$ with $m$ the axion mass and $M$ the UV scale. We re-examine how the axion quality problem is formulated on the dual side and compare to recent treatments. We study how axion quality is affected by the ubiquity of $p$-form gauge potentials (for both $p=2$ and $p=3$) in string vacua and identify two criteria that can potentially lead to a problem. We also show why most fields do not satisfy these criteria, but when they do the existence of multiple fields also provides mechanisms for resolving it. We conclude that the quality problem is easily evaded.
We present a 5D axion-neutrino model that explains the Standard Model fermion mass hierarchy and flavor structure, while simultaneously generating a high-quality axion. The axion and right-handed neutrinos transform under a 5D Peccei-Quinn gauge symmetry, and have highly suppressed profiles on the UV brane where the symmetry is explicitly broken. This setup allows neutrinos to be either Dirac, or Majorana with hierarchically small sterile neutrino masses. The axion decay constant originates from the IR scale, which in the holographically dual 4D description corresponds to the confinement scale…
The idea that the gravity-induced breaking of global symmetries is encoded in Planck-suppressed operators is not scale-invariant: heavy particles which have nothing to do with the UV completion of gravity can mediate the breaking and produce low-energy operators (partly) suppressed by their own mass scales. Such contributions from heavy fields are typically subdominant with respect to the least Planck-suppressed operators, unless the latter are forbidden, as is usual in solutions to the axion quality problem based on four-dimensional gauge symmetries. Therefore, with a focus on axion physics, …
In this work, we discuss how the use of the symmetries well motivated in physics beyond the Standard model (BSM) can guarantee the high quality axions. We avoid to introduce symmetries only useful for addressing the axion quality problem. Rather, we rely on symmetries well motivated by other issues in BSM: supersymmetry, $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ and the discrete R-symmetry $Z_{NR}$. We show that the interplay among these guarantees the high quality of the axion even for the gravitino mass and axion decay constant as large as $m_{3/2}=\mathcal{O}(10){\rm TeV}$ and $F_{a}=\mathcal{O}(10^{15}){\rm GeV}$ …
We explore a new framework that furnishes a mechanism to simultaneously address the electroweak naturalness problem and the axion high quality problem. The framework is based on a doubly composite dynamics where the second confinement takes place after the CFT encounters the first confinement and the theory flows into another conformal fixed point. For a calculable example, we present a holographic dual description of the 4D model via a warped extra dimension model with three 3-branes. While the hierarchy problem is taken cared of by the localization of the Higgs fields on the TeV brane just a…
An accidental U(1) Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry automatically arises in a class of SO(10) unified theories upon gauging the SU(3)$_{f}$ flavour group. The PQ symmetry is protected by the $\mathbb{Z}_4 \times \mathbb{Z}_3$ center of $\text{SO(10)} \times \text{SU(3)}_f$ up to effective operators of canonical dimension six. However, high-scale contributions to the axion potential posing a PQ quality problem arise only at $d=9$. In the pre-inflationary PQ breaking scenario the axion mass window is predicted to be $m_a \in [7 \times 10^{-8}, 10^{-3}]$ eV, where the lower end is bounded by the seesaw…
Continuous global symmetries are expected to be broken by gravity, which can lead to important phenomenological consequences. A prime example is the threat that this poses to the viability of the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem. In this paper, we explore the impact of wormholes as a source of global symmetry breaking by gravity. We review the current status of wormholes and global symmetries and note that, surprisingly, the axion has a quality problem within non-perturbative Einstein gravity. Although these wormholes lead to a large breaking of global symmetries, we show that th…
We discuss a possibility that a superconformal dynamics induces the emergence of a global $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry to solve the strong CP problem through the axion. Fields spontaneously breaking the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry couple to new quarks charged under the ordinary color $SU(3)_C$ and a new $SU(N)$ gauge group. The theory flows into an IR fixed point where the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ breaking fields hold a large anomalous dimension leading to the suppression of $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$-violating higher dimensional operators. The spontaneous breaking of the $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ makes the new quarks massive. Th…
The axion solution to the strong CP problem is delicately sensitive to Peccei-Quinn breaking contributions that are misaligned with respect to QCD instantons. Heavy QCD axion models are appealing because they avoid this so-called "quality problem". We show that generic realizations of this framework can be probed by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA interferometers, through the stochastic gravitational wave (GW) signal sourced by the long-lived axionic string-domain wall network, and by upcoming measurements of the neutron and proton Electric Dipole Moments. Additionally, we provide predictions for searche…
Global symmetries are expected to be violated by gravity, which may cause a serious problem to models based on these symmetries. A famous example is the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem in QCD axion models; it requires a global U(1) symmetry to be respected with high quality, and even the Planck-scale suppressed operators that violate the U(1) symmetry would spoil this solution. Indeed, it is known that gravitational instantons do break the U(1) Peccei-Quinn symmetry and induce the U(1)-violating operators, bringing back the strong CP problem to the axion models. This conclusion …

We propose an ${\rm SU}(6)$ unified theory that solves the strong ${\it CP}$ problem with a high-quality axion. This is achieved by an automatic global Peccei-Quinn ${\rm U}(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry and the gauged discrete $\mathbb{Z}_{4{\cal R}}$ symmetry. With the axion mass predictions of $m_a \sim {\cal O}(10^{-3} ) - {\cal O}(0.1) \,{\rm eV}$, as well as a universal axion-photon coupling in the unification models, the QCD axion can be probed in the upcoming experiments of IAXO. An intermediate gauge symmetry breaking scale characterized by the axion decay constant is obtained by the Peccei-Q…
We propose two models where a U(1) Peccei-Quinn global symmetry arises accidentally and is respected up to high-dimensional operators, so that the axion solution to the strong CP problem is successful even in the presence of Planck-suppressed operators. One model is SU$(N)$ gauge interactions with fermions in the fundamental and a scalar in the symmetric. The axion arises from spontaneous symmetry breaking to SO$(N)$, that confines at a lower energy scale. Axion quality in the model needs $N \gtrsim 10$. SO bound states and possibly monopoles provide extra Dark Matter candidates beyond the axi…
The strong CP problem is a compelling motivation for physics beyond the Standard Model. The most popular solutions invoke a global Peccei-Quinn symmetry, but are challenged by quantum gravitational corrections which are thought to be incompatible with global symmetries, arguing that realistic theories contain additional structure. We explore a construction in which the Peccei-Quinn symmetry is protected to arbitrary order by virtue of a supersymmetric, confining $SU(N)_L \times SU(N) \times SU(N)_R \times U(1)_X$ product gauge group, achieving $\barθ< 10^{-11}$ for an $SU(5)$ model with $f_a \…
The extended Einstein-Maxwell-aether-axion model describes internal interactions inside the system, which contains gravitational, electromagnetic fields, the dynamic unit vector field describing the velocity of an aether, and the pseudoscalar field associated with the axionic dark matter. The specific feature of this model is that the axion field controls the dynamics of the aether through the guiding functions incorporated into the Jacobson's constitutive tensor. Depending on the state of the axion field these guiding functions can control and switch on or switch off the influence of accelera…
We study the dynamics of axion-like fields in F-theory and suggest that they can serve as inflatons in models of natural inflation. The axions arise from harmonic three-forms on the F-theory compactification space and parameterize a complex torus that varies over the geometric moduli space. In particular, this implies that the axion decay constants depend on the complex structure moduli that can be fixed by background fluxes. This might allow tuning them to be super-Planckian in a controlled way and allow for interesting single field inflationary models. We argue that this requires a localizat…
We continue the investigation of F-term axion monodromy inflation in string theory, while seriously taking the issue of moduli stabilization into account. For a number of closed and open string models, we show that they suffer from serious control issues once one is trying to realize trans-Planckian field excursions. More precisely, the flux tuning required to delay the logarithmic scaling of the field distance to a trans-Planckian value cannot be done without leaving the regime where the employed effective supergravity theory is under control. Our findings are consistent with the axionic exte…
The novel PQ mechanism replaces the strong CP problem with some challenges in a model building. In particular, the challenges arise regarding i) the origin of an anomalous global symmetry called a PQ symmetry, ii) the scale of the PQ symmetry breaking, and iii) the quality of the PQ symmetry. In this letter, we provide a natural and simple UV completed model that addresses these challenges. Extra quarks and anti-quarks are separated by two branes in the Randall-Sundrum ${\bf R}^4 \times S^1 / {\bf Z}_2$ spacetime while a hidden SU($N_H$) gauge field condensates in the bulk. The brane separatio…
Wrapped branes in string compactifications introduce a monodromy that extends the field range of individual closed-string axions to beyond the Planck scale. Furthermore, approximate shift symmetries of the system naturally control corrections to the axion potential. This suggests a general mechanism for chaotic inflation driven by monodromy-extended closed-string axions. We systematically analyze this possibility and show that the mechanism is compatible with moduli stabilization and can be realized in many types of compactifications, including warped Calabi-Yau manifolds and more general Ricc…
We investigate the possibility of enhancement of effective axion decay constant in well controlled constructions in string theory. To this end, we study the dynamics of axions arising in the compactifications of type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with background fluxes (with non-perturbative effects included to ensure stabilization of all moduli). In this setup, we attempt to obtain large effective axion decay constant in two different ways: by searching for a direction in field space in which the potential is sufficiently flat and by arriving at a very explicit stringy embeddin…
We study the observational constraints for the axion models in string theory which can successfully act as quintessence. The evolution of the universe in this model is sensitive to the initial value of the axion field. This initial value of the axion field controls deviation of the cosmic evolution from the ΛCDM behaviour. We use the recent Union2 Supernova Type Ia dataset as well as the data from BAO measurements, the WMAP measurement of the shift parameter and the $H(z)$ measurements. Using these data, the reconstructed equation of state of the axion field has extremely small deviation from …

String theory axions are interesting candidates for fields whose potential might be controllable over super-Planckian field ranges and therefore as possible candidates for inflatons in large field inflation. Axion monodromy scenarios are setups where the axion shift symmetry is broken by some effect such that the axion can traverse a large number of periods potentially leading to super-Planckian excursions. We study such scenarios in type IIA string theory where the axion shift symmetry is broken by background fluxes. In particular we calculate the backreaction of the energy density induced by…
