We consider the notion of zilch current that was recently discussed in the literature as an alternative helicity measure for photons. Developing this idea, we suggest the generalization of the zilch for the systems of fermions. We start with the definition of the photonic zilch current in chiral kinetic theory framework and work out field-theoretical definition of the fermionic zilch using the Wigner function formalism. This object has similar properties to the photonic zilch and is conserved in the non-interacting theory. We also show that, in full analogy with a case of photons, the fermionic zilch acquires a non-trivial contribution due to the medium rotation - zilch vortical effect (ZVE) for fermions. Combined with a previously studied ZVE for photons, these results form a wider set of chiral effects parameterized by the spin of the particles and the spin of the current. We briefly discuss the origin of the ZVE, its possible relation to the anomalies in the underlying microscopic theory and possible application for studying the spin polarization in chiral media.
Rotating photon gas exhibits a chirality separation along the angular velocity which is manifested through a generation of helicity and zilch currents. In this paper we study this system using the corresponding Wigner function and construct elements of the covariant chiral kinetic theory for photons from first principles. The Wigner function is solved order-by-order in $\hbar$ and the unconstrained terms are fixed by matching with quantum field theory results. We further consider the zilch and helicity currents and show that both manifestations of the chirality transport originate in the Berry…
We compute thermal one point functions in Maxwell's theory sourced by vorticity for the Zilch and its higher spin extensions via the Kubo formalism. This leads to a generalization of the recent results of \citep{Chernodub:2018era} to any spin and their value suggests a relation with possible anomalies for the higher spin tower of currents.
We study the question if a helicity transporting current is generated in a rotating photon gas at finite temperature. One problem is that there is no gauge invariant local notion of helicity or helicity current. We circumvent this by studying not only the optical helicity current but also the gauge-invariant "zilch" current. In order to avoid problems of causality, we quantize the system on a cylinder of a finite radius and then discuss the limit of infinite radius. We find that net helicity- and zilch currents are only generated in the case of the finite radius and are due to duality violatin…
We derive the Wigner functions of polarized photons in the Coulomb gauge with the $\hbar$ expansion applied to quantum field theory, and identify side-jump effects for massless photons. We also discuss the photonic chiral vortical effect for the Chern-Simons current and zilch vortical effect for the zilch current in local thermal equilibrium as a consistency check for our formalism. The results are found to be in agreement with those obtained from different approaches. Moreover, using the real-time formalism, we construct the quantum kinetic theory (QKT) for polarized photons. By further adopt…
Based on quantum field theory, we formulate the Wigner function and quantum kinetic theory for polarized photons in curved spacetimes which admit a covariantly constant timelike vector. From this framework, the photonic chiral/zilch vortical effects are reproduced in a rigidly rotating coordinate. In a spatially inhomogeneous coordinate, we derive the spin Hall effect for the photon helicity current and energy current in equilibrium. Our derivation reveals that such photonic Hall effect are related to the photonic vortical effect via the Lorentz invariance and their transport coefficients matc…
We consider chiral fluids, with (nearly) massless fermionic constituents, in the confining phase. Chiral vortical effect (CVE) is the flow of axial current along the axis of rotation of the fluid while the spin alignment is a non-vanishing correlation of polarizations of baryons with the axis of rotation. As the theoretical framework we use the model of pionic superfluidity induced by a non-vanishing isotopic chemical potential. We note that the average value of spin of virtual baryons reproduces the CVE. The role of defects, or vortices is crucial. The model does not apply directly to the qua…
We argue that the enhancement in the spin polarization of anti-hyperons compared to the polarization of the hyperons in noncentral relativistic heavy-ion collisions arises as a result of an interplay between the chiral and helical vortical effects. The chiral vortical effect generates the axial current of quarks along the vorticity axis while the recently found helical vortical effect generates the helicity flow -- the projection of the quark's polarization vector onto its momentum -- along the same axis. For massless fermions, the helical charge corresponds to a difference in the contribution…
The coupling between the spin of a massive Dirac fermion and the angular momentum of the medium, i.e. the gravitomagnetic moment, is shown here to be renormalized by QED interactions at finite temperature. This means that the anomalous gravitomagnetic moment (AGM) does not vanish, and implies that thermal effects can break the Einstein equivalence principle in quantum field theory, as argued previously. We also show that the AGM causes radiative corrections to the axial current of massive fermions induced by vorticity in quantum relativistic fluids, similarly to the previous findings for massl…
The thermal contribution to the chiral vortical effect is believed to be related to the axial anomaly in external gravitational fields. We use the universality of the spin-gravity interaction to extend this idea to a wider set of phenomena. We consider the Kubo formula at weak coupling for the spin current of a vector field and derive a novel anomalous effect caused by the medium rotation: the chiral vortical effect for bosons. The effect consists in a spin current of vector bosons along the angular velocity of the medium. We argue that it has the same anomalous nature as in the fermionic case…
Here, we study a quantum fermion field in rigid rotation at finite temperature on anti-de Sitter space. We assume that the rotation rate $Ω$ is smaller than the inverse radius of curvature $\ell ^{-1}$, so that there is no speed of light surface and the static (maximally-symmetric) and rotating vacua coincide. This assumption enables us to follow a geometric approach employing a closed-form expression for the vacuum two-point function, which can then be used to compute thermal expectation values (t.e.v.s). In the high temperature regime, we find a perfect analogy with known results on Minkowsk…
Helicity of free massless Dirac fermions is a conserved, Lorentz-invariant quantity at the level of the classical equations of motion. For a generic ensemble consisting of particles and antiparticles, the helical and chiral charges are different conserved quantities. The flow of helicity can be modelled by the helicity current, which is again conserved in the absence of interactions. Similar to the axial vortical effect which generates an axial (chiral) current, the helicity current is induced by vorticity in a finite temperature medium with vector (electrical) charge imbalance via the helical…
We perform an explicit calculation of the axial current at finite rotation and temperature in curved space. We find that finite curvature and mass corrections to the chiral vortical effect satisfy a relation of the chiral gap effect, that is, a fermion mass-shift by a scalar curvature. We also point out that a product term of the angular velocity and the scalar curvature shares the same coefficient as the mixed gravitational chiral anomaly. We discuss possible applications of the curvature induced chiral vortical effect to rotating astrophysical compact objects described by the Kerr metric. In…
The spin Hall effect of light attracted enormous attention in the literature due to the ongoing progress in developing of new optically active materials and metamaterials with non-trivial spin-orbit interaction. Recently, it was shown that rotating fermionic systems with relativistic massless spectrum may exhibit a 3d analogue of the spin Hall current -- the chiral vortical effect (CVE). Here we show that CVE is a general feature of massless particles with an arbitrary spin. We derive the semi-classical equations of motion in rotating frame from the first principles and show how by coordinate …
We investigate the axial vortical effect in a uniformly rotating sphere subject to finite size. We use MIT boundary condition to limit the boundary of the sphere. For massless fermions inside the sphere, we obtain the exact axial vector current far from the boundary that matches the expression obtained in cylindrical coordinates in the literature. On the spherical boundary, we find both the longitudinal and transverse(with respect to the rotation axis) components with magnitude depending on the colatitude angle. For massive fermions, we derive an expansion of the axial conductivity far from th…
The present thesis aimed to examine the effects of vorticity on the thermodynamics of relativistic quantum systems. We extend the Zubarev's non-equilibrium statistical operator method to address quantum effects induced by vorticity in the presence of chiral matter and external electromagnetic field and keeping full covariant and quantum properties of the system. To investigate the effects of vorticity, this work has been focused on systems consisting of massless chiral fermions. We recovered the significant quantum phenomena known in the literature, namely the chiral magnetic effect, the chira…
We formulate the chiral vortical effect (CVE) and its generalization called generalized vortical effect using the semiclassical theory of wave packet dynamics. We take the spin-vorticity coupling into account and calculate the transport charge current by subtracting the magnetization one from the Noether local one. We find that the transport charge current in the CVE always vanishes in relativistic chiral fermions. This result implies that it cannot be observed in transport experiments in condensed matter systems such as Dirac/Weyl semimetals with the pseudo-Lorentz symmetry. We also demonstra…
We show that a hot rotating fluid of relativistic chiral fermions possesses a new gapless collective mode associated with coherent propagation of energy density and chiral density waves along the axis of rotation. This mode, which we call the Chiral Heat Wave, emerges due to a mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly. At finite density the Chiral Heat Wave couples to the Chiral Vortical Wave while in the presence of an external magnetic field it mixes with the Chiral Magnetic Wave. The coupling of the Chiral Magnetic and Chiral Vortical Waves is also demonstrated. We find that the coupled waves - whi…
We discuss the connection between the integer moments of the Fermi distribution function that occur in the Sommerfeld expansion and the coefficients that occur in anomalous conservation laws for chiral fermions. As an illustration we extract the chiral magneto-thermal energy current from the mixed gauge-gravity anomaly in the 3+1 dimensional energy-momentum conservation law. We then use a similar method to confirm the conjecture that the $T^2/12$ thermal contribution to the chiral vortical effect (CVE) current arises from the gravitational Pontryagin term in the 3+1-dimensional chiral anomaly
The interplay of quantum anomalies with magnetic field and vorticity results in a variety of novel non-dissipative transport phenomena in systems with chiral fermions, including the quark-gluon plasma. Among them is the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) -- the generation of electric current along an external magnetic field induced by chirality imbalance. Because the chirality imbalance is related to the global topology of gauge fields, the CME current is topologically protected and hence non-dissipative even in the presence of strong interactions. As a result, the CME and related quantum phenomena …
The conservation of an axial current modified by the gravitational chiral anomaly implies the universal transport phenomenon (Kinematical Vortical Effect) dependent solely on medium vorticity and acceleration but not dependent explicitly on its temperature and density. This general analysis is verified for the case of massless fermions with spin 1/2.
The chiral vortical effect (CVE) was derived first for non-interacting massless fermions. Recently, an alternative derivation of the CVE was suggested which relates it to the radiation from the horizon of a rotating black hole. We attempt to generalize the latter derivation to the case of photons and encounter a crucial factor of two difference between the two ways of visualizing the CVE. Reservations and possible explanations are briefly discussed.
We study a photonic analog of the chiral magnetic (vortical) effect. We discuss that the vector component of magnetoelectric tensors plays a role of "vector potential," and its rotation is understood as "magnetic field" of a light. Using the geometrical optics approximation, we show that "magnetic fields" cause an anomalous shift of a wave packet of a light through an interplay with the Berry curvature of photons. The mechanism is the same as that of the chiral magnetic (vortical) effect of a chiral fermion, so that we term the anomalous shift "chiral magnetic effect of a light." We further st…

Many-body systems with chiral fermions exhibit anomalous transport phenomena originated from quantum anomalies. Based on quantum field theory, we derive the kinetic theory for chiral fermions interacting with an external electromagnetic field and a background curved geometry. The resultant framework respects the covariance under the U(1) gauge, local Lorentz, and diffeomorphic transformations. It is particularly useful to study the gravitational or non-inertial effects for chiral systems. As the first application, we study the chiral dynamics in a rotating coordinate and clarify the roles of t…
Motivated by an apparent paradox in [X L. Qi, E.Witten, S-C. Zhang, Phys. Rev. B 87 134519 (2013)] we use the method of gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten functionals to construct an effective action for a Weyl fermion whose Majorana mass arises from coupling to a charged condensate. We obtain expressions for the current induced by an external gauge field and observe that the topological part of the current is only one-third of that that might have been expected from the gauge anomaly. The anomaly is not changed by the induced mass gap however. The topological current is supplemented by a conventional …
The hydrodynamic coefficients in the axial current are calculated on the basis of the equilibrium quantum statistical density operator in the third order of perturbation theory in thermal vorticity tensor both for the case of massive and massless fermions. The coefficients obtained describe third-order corrections to the Chiral Vortical Effect and include the contribution from local acceleration. We show that the methods of the Wigner function and the statistical density operator lead to the same result for an axial current in describing effects associated only with vorticity when the local ac…
Relativistic gravitational anomalies lead to anomalous transport coefficients that can be activated at finite temperature in condensed matter systems with gapless fermions. The chiral vortical effect (CVE) is an anomalous chiral current along a rotation axis, expressed in terms of a gravimagnetic field and a gravitational anomaly. Another one, the chiral torsional effect (CTE), arises from hydrodynamically independent frame fields and connection. We discuss the relation of CVE, CTE and gravitational anomalies for relativistic fermions from the perspective of torsion and the Nieh-Yan anomaly. T…
