This paper is concerned with the existence and stability of phase transition steady states to a quasi-linear hyperbolic-parabolic system of chemotactic aggregation, which was proposed in \cite{ambrosi2005review, gamba2003percolation} to describe the coherent vascular network formation observed {\it in vitro} experiment. Considering the system in the half line $ \mathbb{R}_{+}=(0,\infty)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions, we first prove the existence \textcolor{black}{and uniqueness of non-constant phase transition steady states} under some structure conditions on the pressure function. Then we prove that this unique phase transition steady state is nonlinearly asymptotically stable against a small perturbation. We prove our results by the method of energy estimates, the technique of {\it a priori} assumption and a weighted Hardy-type inequality.
Some systems of parabolic equations with nonlocal initial conditions are studied. The systems arise when considering steady-state solutions to diffusive age-structured cooperative or competing species. Local and global bifurcation techniques are employed to derive a detailed description of the structure of positive coexistence solutions.
We consider reaction-diffusion systems and other related dissipative systems on unbounded domains which would have a Liapunov function (and gradient structure) when posed on a finite domain. In this situation, the system may reach local equilibrium on a rather fast time scale but the infinite amount of mass or energy leads to persistent mass or energy flow for all times. In suitably rescaled variables the system converges to a steady state that corresponds to asymptotically self-similar behavior in the original system.

In this paper, we are concerned with the instability and stability of a quasi-linear hyperbolic-parabolic system modeling vascular networks. Under the assumption that the pressure satisfies $\frac{νP'(\barρ)}{γ\barρ} < β$, we first show that the steady-state is linear unstable (i.e., the linear solution grows in time in $L^2$) by constructing an unstable solution. Then based on the lower grow estimates on the solution to the linear system, we prove that the steady-state is nonlinear unstable in the sense of Hadamard. On the contrary, if the pressure satisfies $\frac{νP'(\barρ)}{γ\barρ} > β$, w…
An Euler-type hyperbolic-parabolic system of chemotactic aggregation describing the vascular network formation is investigated in the critical regularity setting. For small initial data around a constant equilibrium state, the well-posedness of the global classical solution to the Cauchy problem with general pressure laws is established in homogeneous hybrid Besov spaces. Then, the optimal time-decay rates of the global solution are analyzed under an additional regularity assumption on the initial data. Furthermore, the relaxation limit (large friction limit) of the hyperbolic-parabolic system…
This paper is concerned with a parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system where both diffusive and chemotactic coefficients (motility functions) depend on the chemical signal density. This system was originally proposed by Keller and Segel in \cite{KS-1971-JTB2} to describe the aggregation phase of {\it Dictyostelium discoideum} cells in response to the secreted chemical signal cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), but the available analytical results are very limited by far. Considering system in a bounded smooth domain with Neumann boundary conditions, we establish the global boundedness of sol…
We study the long-time behaviour of solutions to quasilinear doubly degenerate parabolic problems of fourth order. The equations model for instance the dynamic behaviour of a non-Newtonian thin-film flow on a flat impermeable bottom and with zero contact angle. We consider a shear-rate dependent fluid the rheology of which is described by a constitutive power-law or Ellis-law for the fluid viscosity. In all three cases, positive constants (i.e. positive flat films) are the only positive steady-state solutions. Moreover, we can give a detailed picture of the long-time behaviour of solutions wit…
Fourth-order semilinear parabolic equations of the Cahn--Hilliard-type (01) u_t + \D^2 u = \g u \pm \D (|u|^{p-1}u) in Ω\times \re_+, are considered in a smooth bounded domain $Ø\subset \ren$ with Navier-type boundary conditions on $\p Ø$, or $Ø= \ren$, where $p>1$ and $\g$ are given real parameters. The sign $``+"$ in the "diffusion term" on the right-hand side means the stable case, while $``-"$ reflects the unstable (blow-up) one, with the simplest, so called limit, canonical model for $\g=0$, (02) u_t + \D^2 u= \pm \D(|u|^{p-1}u) \inA. The following three main problems are studied: (i) for…

We consider a system of reaction-diffusion equations in a bounded interval of the real line, with emphasis on the metastable dynamics, whereby the time-dependent solution approaches its steady state in an asymptotically exponentially long time interval as the viscosity coefficient $\varepsilon>0$ goes to zero. To rigorous describe such behavior, we analyze the dynamics of solutions in a neighborhood of a one-parameter family of approximate steady states, and we derive an ODE for the position of the internal interfaces.
This paper studies a type of degenerate parabolic problem with nonlocal term \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=u^p(u_{xx}+u-\bar{u}) & 0<t<T_{\max},\ 0<x<a, u_x(0,t)=u_x(a,t)=0 & 0<t<T_{\max}, u(x,0)=u_0(x) & 0<x<a, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $p>1$, $a>0$. In this paper, the classification of the finite-time blowup/global existence phenomena based on the associated energy functional and explicit expression of all nonnegative steady states are demonstrated. Moreover, we combine the applications of Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality and energy estimates to derive that any bounded solution wit…
In this paper, we study initial boundary value problem of semilinear parabolic equations and prove that any positive solution of its steady-state problem is an initial datum threshold for the existence and nonexistence of global solution to the above mentioned parabolic problem
The paper is concerned with a system consisting of two coupled nonlinear parabolic equations with a cross-diffusion term, where the solutions at positive times define the initial states. The equations arise as steady state equations of an age-structured predator-prey system with spatial dispersion. Based on unilateral global bifurcation methods for Fredholm operators and on maximal regularity for parabolic equations, global bifurcation of positive solutions is derived.
In this article we derive rigorously a nonlinear, steady, bifurcation through spectral bifurcation (i.e., eigenvalues of the linearized equation crossing the imaginary axis) for a class of hyperbolic-parabolic model in a strip. This is related to "cellular instabilities" occuring in detonation and MHD. Our results extend to multiple dimensions the results of Franz Achleitner and Peter Szmolyan (Saddle-node bifurcation of viscous profiles) on 1D steady bifurcation of viscous shock profiles; en passant, changing to an appropriate moving coordinate frame, we recover and somewhat sharpen results o…
A thin film on a horizontal solid substrate and coated with a soluble surfactant is considered. The governing degenerate parabolic equations for the film height and the surfactant concentrations on the surface and in the bulk are derived using a lubrication approximation when gravity is taken into account. It is shown that the steady states are asymptotically stable.
The aim article is to contribute to the definition of a versatile language for metastability in the context of partial differential equations of evolutive type. A general framework suited for parabolic equations in one dimensional bounded domains is proposed, based on choosing a family of approximate steady states, and on the spectral properties of the linearized operators at such states. The slow motion for solutions belonging to a cylindrical neighborhood of the family of approximate steady states is analyzed by means of a system of an ODE for the parameter $ξ$ that describes the family, cou…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions for quasilinear parabolic equations in bounded intervals. In particular, we are concerned with a special class of solutions, called interface solutions, which exhibit e metastable behavior, meaning that their convergence towards the asymptotic configuration of the system is exponentially slow. The key of our analysis is a linearization around an approximation of the steady state of the problem, and the reduction of the dynamics to a one-dimensional motion, describing the slow convergence of the interfaces towards the equilibrium.
The Cauchy problem for the parabolic--elliptic Keller--Segel system in the whole $n$-dimensional space is studied. For this model, every constant $A \in \mathbb{R}$ is a stationary solution. The main goal of this work is to show that $A < 1$ is a stable steady state while $A > 1$ is unstable. Uniformly local Lebesgue spaces are used in order to deal with solutions that do not decay at spatial variable on the unbounded domain.

This paper is devoted to the study of a coupled system consisting in a wave and heat equations coupled through transmission condition along a steady interface. This system is a linearized model for fluid-structure interaction introduced by Rauch, Zhang and Zuazua for a simple transmission condition and by Zhang and Zuazua for a natural transmission condition. Using an abstract Theorem of Burq and a new Carleman estimate shown near the interface, we complete the results obtained by Zhang and Zuazua and by Duyckaerts. We show, without any geometric restriction, a logarithmic decay result.
We consider time-independent solutions of hyperbolic equations such as $\d_{tt}u -Δu= f(x,u)$ where $f$ is convex in $u$. We prove that linear instability with a positive eigenfunction implies nonlinear instability. In some cases the instability occurs as a blow up in finite time. We prove the same result for parabolic equations such as $\d_t u -Δu= f(x,u)$. Then we treat several examples under very sharp conditions, including equations with potential terms and equations with supercritical nonlinearities.
We revisit the Near Equidiffusional Flames (NEF) model introduced by Matkowsky and Sivashinsky in 1979 and consider a simplified, quasi-steady version of it. This simplification allows, near the planar front, an explicit derivation of the front equation. The latter is a pseudodifferential fully nonlinear parabolic equation of the fourth-order. First, we study the (orbital) stability of the null solution. Second, introducing a parameter $ε$, we rescale both the dependent and independent variables and prove rigourously the convergence to the solution of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation as $ε\to…

We consider semilinear evolution equations of the form $a(t)\partial_{tt}u + b(t) \partial_t u + Lu = f(x,u)$ and $b(t) \partial_t u + Lu = f(x,u),$ with possibly unbounded $a(t)$ and possibly sign-changing damping coefficient $b(t)$, and determine precise conditions for which linear instability of the steady state solutions implies nonlinear instability. More specifically, we prove that linear instability with an eigenfunction of fixed sign gives rise to nonlinear instability by either exponential growth or finite-time blow-up. We then discuss a few examples to which our main theorem is immed…
In this article we investigate a parabolic-parabolic-elliptic two-species chemotaxis system with weak competition and show global asymptotic stability of the coexistence steady state under a smallness condition on the chemotactic strengths, which seems more natural than the condition previously known. For the proof we rely on the method of eventual comparison, which thereby is shown to be a useful tool even in the presence of chemotactic terms.
We derive the long time asymptotic of solutions to an evolutive Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation in a bounded smooth domain, in connection with ergodic problems recently studied in \cite{bcr}. Our main assumption is an appropriate degeneracy condition on the operator at the boundary. This condition is related to the characteristic boundary points for linear operators as well as to the irrelevant points for the generalized Dirichlet problem, and implies in particular that no boundary datum has to be imposed. We prove that there exists a constant $c$ such that the solutions of the evolutive prob…
It is known that the Swift-Hohenberg equation $\partial u/\partial t = -(\partial_x^2 + 1)^2u + \varepsilon (u-u^3)$ can be reduced to the Ginzburg-Landau equation (amplitude equation) $\partial A/\partial t = 4\partial_x^2 A + \varepsilon (A-3A|A|^2)$ by means of the singular perturbation method. This means that if $\varepsilon >0$ is sufficiently small, a solution of the latter equation provides an approximate solution of the former one. In this paper, a reduction of a certain class of a system of nonlinear parabolic equations $\partial u/\partial t = \mathcal{P}u + \varepsilon f(u)$ is prop…
We continue our study of bounded solutions of the semilinear parabolic equation $u_t=u_{xx}+f(u)$ on the real line, where $f$ is a locally Lipschitz function on $\mathbb{R}.$ Assuming that the initial value $u_0=u(\cdot,0)$ of the solution has finite limits $θ^\pm$ as $x\to\pm\infty$, our goal is to describe the asymptotic behavior of $u(x,t)$ as $t\to\infty$. In a prior work, we showed that if the two limits are distinct, then the solution is quasiconvergent, that is, all its locally uniform limit profiles as $t\to\infty$ are steady states. It is known that this result is not valid in general…
The paper focuses on positive solutions to a coupled system of parabolic equations with nonlocal initial conditions. Such equations arise as steady-state equations in an age-structured predator-prey model with diffusion. By using global bifurcation techniques, we describe the structure of the set of positive solutions with respect to two parameters measuring the intensities of the fertility of the species. In particular, we establish co-existence steady-states, i.e. solutions which are nonnegative and nontrivial in both components.
We model multi-dimensional two-phase flows of incompressible fluids in porous media using generalized Forchheimer equations and the capillary pressure. Firstly, we find a family of steady state solutions whose saturation and pressure are radially symmetric and velocities are rotation-invariant. Their properties are investigated based on relations between the capillary pressure, each phase's relative permeability and Forchheimer polynomial. Secondly, we analyze the linear stability of those steady states. The linearized system is derived and reduced to a parabolic equation for the saturation. T…
We are concerned with viscous profiles (travelling waves and steady solutions) for mixed hyperbolic-parabolic systems in one space variable. For a class of systems including the compressible Navier Stokes equation, these profiles satisfy a singular ordinary differential equation in the form \label{e:ab} dU / dt = F(U)/ z (U) . Here U takes values in $R^d$ and $F: R^d \to R^d$ is a regular function. The real valued function $z (U)$ is as well regular, but the equation is singular because $z (U)$ can attain the value 0. We focus on a small enough neighbourhood of a point $\bar U$ satisfying $F(\…
Motivated by recent physics papers describing rules for natural network formation, we study an elliptic-parabolic system of partial differential equations proposed by Hu and Cai. The model describes the pressure field thanks to Darcy's type equation and the dynamics of the conductance network under pressure force effects with a diffusion rate $D$ representing randomness in the material structure. We prove the existence of global weak solutions and of local mild solutions and study their long term behaviour. It turns out that, by energy dissipation, steady states play a central role to understa…
We consider a population structured by a spacevariable and a phenotypical trait, submitted to dispersion, mutations, growth and nonlocal competition. This population is facing an {\it environmental gradient}: to survive at location $x$, an individual must have a trait close to some optimal trait $y_{opt}(x)$. Our main focus is to understand the effect of a {\it nonlinear} environmental gradient. We thus consider a nonlocal parabolic equation for the distribution of the population, with $y_{opt}(x) = \varepsilonθ(x)$, $0<\vert \varepsilon \vert \ll 1$. We construct steady states solutions and, w…
We consider a parabolic sine-Gordon model with periodic boundary conditions. We prove a fundamental maximum principle which gives a priori uniform control of the solution. In the one-dimensional case we classify all bounded steady states and exhibit some explicit solutions. For the numerical discretization we employ first order IMEX, and second order BDF2 discretization without any additional stabilization term. We rigorously prove the energy stability of the numerical schemes under nearly sharp and quite mild time step constraints. We demonstrate the striking similarity of the parabolic sine-…
A parabolic-parabolic (Patlak-) Keller-Segel model in up to three space dimensions with nonlinear cell diffusion and an additional nonlinear cross-diffusion term is analyzed. The main feature of this model is that there exists a new entropy functional, yielding gradient estimates for the cell density and chemical concentration. For arbitrarily small cross-diffusion coefficients and for suitable exponents of the nonlinear diffusion terms, the global-in-time existence of weak solutions is proved, thus preventing finite-time blow up of the cell density. The global existence result also holds for …
We establish a comparison between Rakib--Sivashinsky and Michelson-Sivashinsky quasilinear parabolic differential equations governing the weak thermal limit of upward flame front propagating in a channel. For the former equation, we give a complete description of all steady solutions and present their local and global stability analysis. For the latter, multi-coalescent unstable steady solutions are introduced and shown to be exponentially more numerous than the previous known coalescente solutions. This fact is argued to be responsible for the disagreement of the observed dynamics in numerica…
We study the Muskat problem describing the spatially periodic motion of two fluids with equal viscosities under the effect of gravity in a vertical unbounded two-dimensional geometry. We first prove that the classical formulation of the problem is equivalent to a nonlocal and nonlinear evolution equation expressed in terms of singular integrals and having only the interface between the fluids as unknown. Secondly, we show that this evolution equation has a quasilinear structure, which is at a formal level not obvious, and we also disclose the parabolic character of the equation. Exploiting the…
This is a continuation, and conclusion, of our study of bounded solutions $u$ of the semilinear parabolic equation $u_t=u_{xx}+f(u)$ on the real line whose initial data $u_0=u(\cdot,0)$ have finite limits $θ^\pm$ as $x\to\pm\infty$. We assume that $f$ is a locally Lipschitz function on $\mathbb{R}$ satisfying minor nondegeneracy conditions. Our goal is to describe the asymptotic behavior of $u(x,t)$ as $t\to\infty$. In the first two parts of this series we mainly considered the cases where either $θ^-\neq θ^+$; or $θ^\pm=θ_0$ and $f(θ_0)\ne0$; or else $θ^\pm=θ_0$, $f(θ_0)=0$, and $θ_0$ is a st…
Mesenchymal motion describes the movement of cells in biological tissues formed by fiber networks. An important example is the migration of tumor cells through collagen networks during the process of metastasis formation. We investigate the mesenchymal motion model proposed by T. Hillen (J. Math. Biol. 53:585-616, 2006) in higher dimensions. We formulate the problem as an evolution equation in a Banach space of measure-valued functions and use methods from semigroup theory to show the global existence of classical solutions. We investigate steady states of the model and show that patterns of n…
In the current work we study a nonlocal parabolic problem with Robin boundary conditions. The problem arises from the study of an idealized electrically actuated MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) device. Initially we study the steady-state problem in one dimension and we present some numerical results regarding its bifurcation diagram. Next the $N-$dimensional nonlocal problem steady-state problem is investigated and a Pohozaev-type identity is first obtained which then facilitates derivation of an estimate of the pull-in voltage for radially symmetric domains. Later the time-dependent pr…
We analyze existence and qualitative behavior of non-negative weak solutions for fourth order degenerate parabolic equations on graph domains with Kirchhoff's boundary conditions at the inner nodes and Neumann boundary conditions at the boundary nodes. The problem is originated from industrial constructions of spray coated meshes which are used in water collection and in oil-water separation processes. For a certain range of parameter values we prove convergence toward a constant steady state that corresponds to the uniform distribution of coating on a fiber net.
Typically, aggregation-diffusion is modeled by parabolic equations that combine linear or nonlinear diffusion with a Fokker-Planck convection term. Under very general suitable assumptions, we prove that radial solutions of the evolution process converge asymptotically in time towards a stationary state representing the balance between the two effects. Our parabolic system is the gradient flow of an energy functional, and in fact we show that the stationary states are minimizers of a relaxed energy. Here, we study radial solutions of an aggregation-diffusion model that combines nonlinear fast d…
