In this paper a strongly degenerate parabolic equation derived from a density dependent particle flow model is studied. Furthermore, a free boundary problem and its connection to the strongly degenerate parabolic equation is investigated. First, it is shown that the strongly degenerate parabolic equation has a unique global bounded weak solution that converges towards a steady state for large time horizons. Two scenarios might occur: When the average density $ρ_{\infty}$ is larger than a certain critical density $ρ_{cr}$, the steady state coincides with $ρ_{\infty}$ and the convergence rate is exponential in the $L^2$ norm; while in the opposite case $ρ_{\infty}<ρ_{cr}$, the steady state is unknown and the convergence is algebraic in a negative Sobolev seminorm. Further investigations show that for radially symmetric and decreasing initial data, the solution of the strongly degenerate parabolic equation can be constructed by using the solution of a corresponding free boundary problem. Moreover, the global existence of weak solutions to the latter problem is proved. Finally, numerical experiments in two space dimensions are presented, which show that segregation phenomena can appear when the initial average density is smaller than the critical density.
We discuss the domain variation solutions notion for some degenerate elliptic two-phase free boundary problems as well as the viscosity definition of the problem when the operator is degenerate.
In this paper, we mainly introduce a general method to study the existence and uniqueness of solution of free boundary problems with partially degenerate diffusion.
We study a Robin boundary problem for degenerate parabolic equation. We suggest a notion of entropy solution and propose a result of existence and uniqueness. Numerical simulations illustrate some aspects of solution behaviour. Monodimensional experiments are presented.
We develop an existence and regularity theory for a class of degenerate one-phase free boundary problems. In this way we unify the basic theories in free boundary problems like the classical one-phase problem, the obstacle problem, or more generally for minimizers of the Alt-Phillips functional.
We consider a degenerate wave equation with drift in presence of a leading operator which is not in divergence form. We provide some conditions for the boundary controllability of the associated Cauchy problem.
We show an existence of a weak solution of a degenerate and/or singular semilinear elliptic boundary value (nonhomogeneous) problem lying between a given weak subsolution and a given weak supersolution. It has been applied for an existence result of large solution to a similar problem.
We study existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations, in bounded domains. We show that there exists a unique solution which satisfies possibly inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. To this purpose some barrier functions are properly introduced and used.
The mixed problem for a degenerate high order equation with a fractional derivative in a rectangular domain is considered in the article. The existence of a solution and its uniqueness are shown by the spectral method.
We consider an one-phase free boundary problem for a degenerate fully non-linear elliptic operators with non-zero right hand side. We use the approach present in \cite{DeSilva} to prove that flat free boundaries and Lipschitz free boundaries are $C^{1, γ}$.
In the present paper, we study sharp C^{1;α} regularity results with boundary Neumann condition for viscosity solutions for a class of degenerate fully non-linear elliptic equations with Neumann boundary conditions.
We prove an estimate on the modulus of continuity at a boundary point of a cylindrical domain for local weak solutions to degenerate parabolic equations of $p$-laplacian type. The estimate is given in terms of a Wiener-type integral, defined by a proper elliptic $p$-capacity.
We consider a function U satisfying a degenerate elliptic equation on (0,+\infty)\times R^N with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. The Neumann condition is prescribed on a bounded domain Ω\subset R^N of class C^{1;1}, whereas the Dirichlet data is on the exterior of Ω. We prove Holder regularity estimates of U/d^s, where d is a distance function defined as d(z) := dist(z;R^N\setminusΩ), for z\in (0,+\infty)\times R^N. The degenerate elliptic equation arises from the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension of the Dirichlet problem for the fractional Laplacian. Our proof relies on compactness…
We study the generation property for a fourth order operator in divergence or in non divergence form with suitable Neumann boundary conditions. As a consequence we obtain the well posedness for the parabolic equations governed by these operators. The novelty of this paper is that the operators depend on a function $a: [0,1] \rightarrow \R_+$ that degenerates somewhere in the interval.
We study a Neumann type initial-boundary value problem for strongly degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations under the nonlinearity-diffusivity condition. We suggest a notion of entropy solution for this problem and prove its uniqueness. The existence of entropy solutions is also discussed.
In this paper we establish some regularity results concerning the behavior of weak solutions and very weak solutions of the degenerate wave equation near the boundary. For the nondegenerate case, the correponding results were originally obtained by Fabre and Puel (J. of Diff. Eq. 106, 1993). This kind of results is closely related to the exact boundary controllability for the wave equation as the limit of internal controllability.
We study the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem associated to a phase transition modeled upon the degenerate two-phase Stefan problem. We prove that weak solutions are continuous up to the parabolic boundary and quantify the continuity by deriving a modulus. As a byproduct, these a priori regularity results are used to prove the existence of a so-called physical solution.
We introduce the concept of k-strictly convexity to describe the accurate convexity of convex domains some directions of which boundary may be flat. Basing this accurate convexity, we construct sub-solutions the Dirichlet problem for some degenerate-singular Monge-Ampère type equations and prove the sharp boundary estimates for convex viscosity solutions of the problem. As a result, we obtain the optimal global Hölder regularity of the convex viscosity solutions.
In this paper the well-posedness of some degenerate parabolic equations with a dynamic boundary condition is considered. To characterize the target degenerate parabolic equation from the Cahn-Hilliard system, the nonlinear term coming from the convex part of the double-well potential is chosen using a suitable maximal monotone graph. The main topic of this paper is the existence problem under an assumption for this maximal monotone graph for treating a wider class. The existence of a weak solution is proved.
We consider degenerate Monge-Ampere equations of the type $$\det D^2 u= f \quad \{in $\Om$}, \quad \quad f \sim \, d_{\p \Om}^α\quad \{near $\p \Om$,}$$ where $d_{\p \Om}$ represents the distance to the boundary of the domain $\Om$ and $α>0$ is a positive power. We obtain $C^2$ estimates at the boundary under natural conditions on the boundary data and the right hand side. Similar estimates in two dimensions were obtained by J.X. Hong, G. Huang and W. Wang.
In this paper, we establish $C^{1, α}$ regularity upto the boundary for a class of degenerate fully nonlinear elliptic equations with Neumann boundary conditions. Our main result Theorem 2.1 constitutes the boundary analogue of the interior $C^{1, α}$ regularity result established in [21] for equations with similar structural assumptions. The proof of our main result is achieved via compactness arguments combined with new boundary Hölder estimates for equations which are uniformly elliptic when the gradient is either small or large.
The goal of this paper is to study some possibly degenerate elliptic equation in a bounded domain with a nonlinear boundary condition involving measure data. We investigate two types of problems: the first one deals with the laplacian in a bounded domain with measure supported on the domain and on the boundary. A second one deals with the same type of data but involves a degenerate weight in the equation. In both cases, the nonlinearity under consideration lies on the boundary. For the first problem, we prove an optimal regularity result, whereas for the second one the optimality is not guaran…
We consider an initial mixed-boundary value problem for anisotropic fractional type degenerate parabolic equations posed in bounded domains. Namely, we consider that the boundary of the domain splits into two parts. In one of them, we impose a Dirichlet boundary condition and in the another one a Neumann condition. Under this mixed-boundary condition, we show the existence of solutions for measurable and bounded non-negative initial data. The nonlocal anisotropic diffusion effect relies on an inverse of a s-fractional type elliptic operator, and the solvability is proved for any s in (0, 1).
We study a class of second-order boundary-degenerate elliptic equations in two dimensions with minimal regularity assumptions. We prove a maximum principle and a Harnack inequality at the degenerate boundary, and assuming local boundedness, we prove continuity. On globally defined non-negative solutions we provide strong constraints on behavior at infinity, and prove a Liouville-type theorem for entire solutions on the closed half-plane. The class of PDE in question includes many from mathematical finance, Keldysh- and Tricomi-type PDE, and the 2nd order reduction of the fully non-linear 4th o…
We investigate singular and degenerate behavior of solutions of the unstable free boundary problem $$Δu = -χ_{\{u>0\}} .$$ First, we construct a solution that is not of class $C^{1,1}$ and whose free boundary consists of four arcs meeting in a {\em cross}-shaped singularity. This solution is completely unstable/repulsive from above and below which would make it hard to get by the usual methods, and even numerics is non-trivial. We also show existence of a degenerate solution. This answers two of the open questions in a recent paper by R. Monneau-G.S. Weiss.
We prove existence, uniqueness and regularity results for mixed boundary value problems associated with fully nonlinear, possibly singular or degenerate elliptic equations. Our main result is a global Hölder estimate for solutions, obtained by means of the comparison principle and the construction of ad hoc barriers. The global Hölder estimate immediately yields a compactness result in the space of solutions, which could be applied in the study of principal eigenvalues and principal eigenfunctions of mixed boundary value problems.
We obtain optimal boundary and global regularity estimates for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations whose ellipticity degenerates at the critical points of a given solution. We show that any solution is $C^{1,α}$ on the boundary of the domain, for an optimal and explicit $α$ given only in terms of the regularity of the boundary datum and the elliptic degeneracy degree, no matter how possibly low is the interior regularity for that class of equations. We also obtain sharp global estimates. Our findings are new even for model equations, involving only a degenerate Laplacian;…
We study the boundary behavior of non-negative solutions to a class of degenerate/singular parabolic equations, whose prototype is the parabolic $p$-Laplacian. Assuming that such solutions continuously vanish on some distinguished part of the lateral part $S_T$ of a Lipschitz cylinder, we prove Carleson-type estimates, and deduce some consequences under additional assumptions on the equation or the domain. We then prove analogous estimates for non-negative solutions to a class of degenerate/singular parabolic equations, of porous medium type.
We consider a pseudo-differential equation driven by the fractional $p$-Laplacian with $p\ge 2$ (degenerate case), with a bounded reaction $f$ and Dirichlet type conditions in a smooth domain $Ω$. By means of barriers, a nonlocal superposition principle, and the comparison principle, we prove that any weak solution $u$ of such equation exhibits a weighted Hölder regularity up to the boundary, that is, $u/d^s\in C^α(\overlineΩ)$ for some $α\in(0,1)$, $d$ being the distance from the boundary.
We study the boundary regularity properties and derive a priori pointwise supremum estimates of weak solutions and their derivatives in terms of suitable weighted $L^2$-norms for a class of degenerate parabolic equations that satisfy homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on certain portions of the boundary. Such equations arise in population genetics in the study of models for the evolution of gene frequencies. Among the applications of our results is the description of the structure of the transition probabilities and of the hitting distributions of the underlying gene frequencies process…
In this work we deal with degenerate parabolic equations with three lines of degeneration. Using "a-b-c" method we prove the uniqueness theorems defining conditions to parameters. We show nontrivial solutions for considered problems, when uniqueness conditions to parameters, participating in the equations are not fulfilled.
The paper is concerned with the vanishing viscosity limit of the two-dimensional degenerate viscous lake equations when the Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the impermeable boundary of a simply connected bounded regular domain. When the initial vorticity is in the Lebesgue space $L^q$ with $2<q\le\infty$, we show the degenerate viscous lake equations possess a unique global solution and the solution converges to a corresponding weak solution of the inviscid lake equations. In the special case when the vorticity is in $L^\infty$, an explicit convergence rate is obtained.
We consider a mixed type boundary value problem for a class of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations. Namely, we consider a Cartesian product domain and split its boundary into two parts. In one of them we impose a Dirichlet boundary condition; in the other, we impose a Neumann condition. We apply a normal trace formula for $L^2$-divergence-measure fields to prove a new strong trace property in the part of the boundary where the Neumann condition is imposed. We prove existence and uniqueness of the entropy solution. This is a revised corrected version of the paper published in Arch.\ Ratio…
We characterise regular boundary points of the parabolic $p$-Laplacian in terms of a family of barriers, both when $p>2$ and $1<p<2$. Due to the fact that $p\not=2$, it turns out that one can multiply the $p$-Laplace operator by a positive constant, without affecting the regularity of a boundary point. By constructing suitable families of barriers, we give some simple geometric conditions that ensure the regularity of boundary points.
The equation arising from Prandtl boundary layer theory is considered. The existence of the entropy solution can be proved by BV estimate method. The interesting problem is that, since a may be degenerate on the boundary, the usual boundary value condition may be overdetermined. Accordingly, only dependent on a partial boundary value condition, the stability of solutions can be expected. This expectation is turned to reality by Kruzkov's bi-variables method, a reasonable partial boundary value condition matching up with the equation is found first time. Moreover, the stability can be proved ev…
An initial boundary value problem of the nonlinear diffusion equation with a dynamic boundary condition is treated. The existence problem of the initial-boundary value problem is discussed. The main idea of the proof is an abstract approach from the evolution equation governed by the subdifferential. To apply this, the setting of suitable function spaces, more precisely the mean-zero function spaces, is important. In the case of a dynamic boundary condition, the total mass, which is the sum of volumes in the bulk and on the boundary, is a point of emphasis. The existence of a weak solution is …
This paper is concerned with weak solutions of the degenerate viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation $$\partial_t u-Δ_p u=|\nabla u|^q,$$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, where $p>2$ and $q>p-1$. With the goal of studying the gradient blow-up phenomenon for this problem, we first establish local well-posedness with blow-up alternative in $W^{1, \infty}$ norm. We then obtain a precise gradient estimate involving the distance to the boundary. It shows in particular that the gradient blow-up can take place only on the boundary. A regularizing effect for $u_…
In this paper, we investigate the singularity near the degenerate points of the steady axisymmetric flow with general vorticity of an inviscid incompressible fluid acted on by gravity and with a free surface. We called the points on the free boundary at which the gradient of the stream function vanishes as the degenerate points. The main results in this paper give the different classifications of the singularity near the degenerate points on the free surface. More precisely, we obtained that at the stagnation points, the possible profiles must be a Stokes corner, or a horizontal cusp, or a hor…
This note is devoted to the study of the finite volume methods used in the discretization of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equation with zero-flux boundary condition. The notion of an entropy-process solution, successfully used for the Dirichlet problem, is insufficient to obtain a uniqueness and convergence result because of a lack of regularity of solutions on the boundary. We infer the uniqueness of an entropy-process solution using the tool of the nonlinear semigroup theory by passing to the new abstract notion of integral-process solution. Then, we prove that numerical solution converge…
Well-posedness of the initial boundary value problem for degenerate hyperbolic systems with a localized term and its application to the linearized system for the motion of an inextensible hanging string
We study the degenerate elliptic equation $-\mathop{\rm div}(|x|^α\nabla u) =f(u)+tϕ(x)+h(x)$ in a bounded open set $Ω$ with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition, where $α\in(0,2)$ and $f$ has a linear growth. The main result establishes the existence of real numbers $t_*$ and $t^*$ such that the problem has at least two solutions if $t\leq t_*$, there is at least one solution if $t_*<t\leq t^*$, and no solution exists for all $t>t^*$. The proof combines a priori estimates with topological degree arguments.
