Recent work has shown that certain deformations of the scalar potential in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity can be written as double-scaled matrix models. However, some of the deformations exhibit an apparent breakdown of unitarity in the form of a negative spectral density at disc order. We show here that the source of the problem is the presence of a multi-valued solution of the leading order matrix model string equation. While for a class of deformations we fix the problem by identifying a first order phase transition, for others we show that the theory is both perturbatively and non-perturbatively inconsistent. Aspects of the phase structure of the deformations are mapped out, using methods known to supply a non-perturbative definition of undeformed JT gravity. Some features are in qualitative agreement with a semi-classical analysis of the phase structure of two-dimensional black holes in these deformed theories.
We derive the part of the Lagrangian for the sigma model on the eta-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 space which is quadratic in fermions and has the full dependence on bosons. We then show that there exists a field redefinition which brings the corresponding Lagrangian to the standard form of type IIB Green-Schwarz superstring. Reading off the corresponding RR couplings, we observe that they fail to satisfy the supergravity equations of motion, despite the presence of kappa-symmetry. However, in a special scaling limit our solution reproduces the supergravity background found by Maldacena and Russo. Furt…
Within the framework of the q-deformed Heisenberg algebra a dynamical equation of q-deformed quantum mechanics is discussed. The perturbative aspects of the q-deformed Schrödinger equation are analyzed. General representations of the additional momentum-dependent interaction originating from the q-deformed effects are presented in two approaches. As examples, such additional interactions related to the harmonic-oscillator potential and the Morse potential are demonstrated.
Within the superfield formalism, we calculate the two-point functions and the effective potential for the mass-deformed ${\cal N}=3$ Chern-Simons-matter theory and discuss the related renormalization group issues.
In this paper we explicitly carry out the perturbative renormalization of the $T\bar{T}$-deformed free massive Dirac fermion in two dimensions up to second order in the coupling constant. This is done by computing the two-to-two $S$-matrix using the LSZ reduction formula and canceling out the divergences by introducing counterterms. We demonstrate that the renormalized Lagrangian is unambiguously determined by demanding that it gives the correct $S$-matrix of a $T\bar{T}$-deformed integrable field theory. Remarkably, the renormalized Lagrangian is qualitatively very different from its classica…
Corresponding to two ways of realizing the q-deformed Heisenberg algebra by the undeformed variables there are two q-perturbative Hamiltonians with the additional momentum-dependent interactions, one originates from the perturbative expansion of the potential, the other originates from that of the kinetic energy term. At the level of operators, these two q-perturbative Hamiltonians are different. In order to establish a reliable foundation of the perturbative calculations in q-deformed dynamics, except examples of the harmonic-oscillator and the Morse potential demonstrated before, the general…
We prove that the chiral propagator of the deformed N=4 SYM theory can be made finite to all orders in perturbation theory for any complex value of the deformation parameter. For any such value the set of finite deformed theories can be parametrized by a whole complex function of the coupling constant g. We reveal a new protection mechanism for chiral operators of dimension three. These are obtained by differentiating the Lagrangian with respect to the independent coupling constants. A particular combination of them is a CPO involving only chiral matter. Its all-order form is derived directly …
We study supergravity BPS equations which correspond to mass-deformation of some representative AdS/CFT examples. The field theory of interest are N=4, D=4 super Yang-Mills, the ABJM model in D=3, and the Brandhuber-Oz fixed point in D=5. For these gauge theories the free energy with mass terms for matter multiplets is calculable in large-N limit using supersymmetric localization technique. We suggest a perturbative method to solve the supergravity equations. For the dual of mass-deformed ABJM model we reproduce the known exact solutions. For the mass-deformed Brandhuber-Oz theory our method g…
We carry out a perturbative study of the Leigh-Strassler deformed N=4 SYM theory in order to verify that the trihedral Delta(27) symmetry holds in the quantum theory. We show that the Delta(27) symmetry is preserved to two loops (at finite N) by explicitly computing the superpotential. The perturbative superpotential is not holomorphic in the couplings due to finite contributions. However, there exist coupling constant redefinitions that restore holomorphy. Interestingly, the same redefinitions appear (in the work of Jack, Jones and North[hep-ph/9603386]) if one requires the three-loop anomalo…
Pöschl-Teller-driven solutions for quantum mechanical fluctuations are triggered off by single scalar field theories obtained through a systematic perturbative procedure for generating deformed defects. The analytical properties concerning the quantum fluctuations in one-dimension, zero-mode states, first- and second- excited states, and energy density profiles are all obtained from deformed topological and non-topological structures supported by real scalar fields. Results are firstly derived from an integrated $λϕ^4$ theory, with corresponding generalizations applied to starting $λχ^4$ and {…
For \cal{N}=1 SU(N) SYM theories obtained as marginal deformations of the \cal{N}=4 parent theory we study perturbatively some sectors of the chiral ring in the weak coupling regime and for finite N. By exploiting the relation between the definition of chiral ring and the effective superpotential we develop a procedure which allows us to easily determine protected chiral operators up to n loops once the superpotential has been computed up to (n-1) order. In particular, for the Lunin-Maldacena beta-deformed theory we determine the quantum structure of a large class of operators up to three loop…
We consider the $c=1$ matrix model deformed by the operator ${1\over 2} M\TrΦ^{-2}$, which was conjectured by Jevicki and Yoneya to describe a two-dimensional black hole of mass $M$. We calculate the exact non-perturbative $S$-matrix and show that all the amplitudes involving an odd number of particles vanish at least to all orders of perturbation theory. We conjecture that these amplitudes vanish non-perturbatively and prove this for the $2n \to 1$ scattering. For the 2-- and 4--particle amplitudes we give some leading terms of the perturbative expansion.
We count the number of bound states of BPS black holes on local Calabi-Yau three-folds involving a Riemann surface of genus g. We show that the corresponding gauge theory on the brane reduces to a q-deformed Yang-Mills theory on the Riemann surface. Following the recent connection between the black hole entropy and the topological string partition function, we find that for a large black hole charge N, up to corrections of $O(e^{-N})$, $Z_{BH}$ is given as a sum of a square of chiral blocks, each of which corresponds to a specific D-brane amplitude. The leading chiral block, the vacuum block, …
We look for chiral primaries in the general Leigh-Strassler deformed N=4 super Yang-Mills theory by systematically computing the planar one-loop anomalous dimension for single trace operators up to dimension six. The operators are organised into representations of the trihedral group, Δ(27), which is a symmetry of the Lagrangian. We find an interesting relationship between the U(1)_R-charge of chiral primaries and the representation of Δ(27) to which the operator belongs. Up to scaling dimension Δ_0=6 (and conjecturally to all dimensions) the following holds: The planar one-loop anomalous dime…
We apply a perturbative approach to evaluate the Casimir energy for a massless real scalar field in 3+1 dimensions, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on two surfaces. One of the surfaces is assumed to be flat, while the other corresponds to a small deformation, described by a single function $η$, of a flat mirror. The perturbative expansion is carried out up to the fourth order in the deformation $η$, and the results are applied to the calculation of the Casimir energy for corrugated mirrors in front of a plane. We also reconsider the proximity force approximation within the context of …
We study perturbative renormalization of the composite operators in the $T\bar T$-deformed two-dimensional free field theories. The pattern of renormalization for the stress-energy tensor is different in the massive and massless cases. While in the latter case the canonical stress tensor is not renormalized up to high order in the perturbative expansion, in the massive theory there are induced counterterms at linear order. For a massless theory our results match the general formula derived recently in [1].
We show that standard puzzles of hot Big Bang cosmology that motivated the introduction of cosmological inflation, such as the smoothness and horizon problem, the flatness problem and the relic problem are also solved by holographic models for very early universe based on perturbative three dimensional QFT. In the holographic setup, cosmic evolution is mapped to inverse renormalization group (RG) flow of the dual QFT, and the resolution of the puzzles relies on properties of the RG flow.
That the exact quantum S-matrix of $\text{T}\bar{\text{T}}$-deformed field theories is known has interesting consequences for their perturbative renormalisation. Recent investigations into the interplay between renormalisation and integrable deformations have focused on those cases where the (undeformed) seed theories are integrable. In this paper, we study the perturbative renormalisation of non-integrable $\text{T}\bar{\text{T}}$-deformed field theories, focusing on a theory of scalars with a quartic interaction. We show that in this theory, the 4-point 1-loop S-matrix exhibits features simi…
We propose that certain twists of the su(2|2) S-matrix elements describe the beta-deformation of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We compute the perturbative four-loop anomalous dimension of the Konishi operator of the deformed gauge theory from the Luscher formula based on these twisted S-matrix elements. The result agrees exactly with the perturbative gauge theory computations.
We investigate the stability of the non-supersymmetric solutions of type-IIB supergravity having an unwarped $AdS$ factor and $λ$-deformed subspaces found in arXiv:1911.12371. Among the plethora of solutions we study the perturbative stability of backgrounds with an $AdS_n$, with $n = 3,4,6$, factor. Our analysis is performed from a lower dimensional effective theory which we construct. We uncover the regions and isolated points in the parameter space of potential perturbative stability.
In this paper we begin the study of renormalizations in the heterotically deformed N=(0,2) CP(N-1) sigma models. In addition to the coupling constant g^2 of the undeformed N=(2,2) model, there is the second coupling constant γdescribing the strength of the heterotic deformation. We calculate both βfunctions, β_g and β_γat one loop, determining the flow of g^2 and γ. Under a certain choice of the initial conditions, the theory is asymptotically free. The βfunction for the ratio ρ=γ^2/g^2 exhibits an infrared fixed point at ρ={1}{2}. Formally this fixed point lies outside the validity of the one…
Centre-stabilised $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theories on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$ are QCD-like theories that can be engineered to remain weakly-coupled at all energy scales by taking the $S^1$ circle length $L$ to be sufficiently small. In this regime, these theories admit effective long-distance descriptions as Abelian $U(1)^{N-1}$ gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^3$, and semiclassics can be reliably employed to study non-perturbative phenomena such as colour confinement and the generation of mass gaps in an analytical setting. At the perturbative tree level, the long-distance effective theory contains…
We derive a scalar field theory of the deformed special relativity type, living on non-commutative kappa-Minkowski spacetime and with a kappa-deformed Poincare symmetry, from the SO(4,1) group field theory defining the transition amplitudes for topological BF-theory in 4 space-time dimensions. This is done at a non-perturbative level of the spin foam formalism working directly with the group field theory (GFT). We show that matter fields emerge from the fundamental model as perturbations around a specific phase of the GFT, corresponding to a solution of the fundamental equations of motion, and…
We compute instanton corrections to correlators in the genus-zero topological subsector of a (0,2) supersymmetric gauged linear sigma model with target space P1xP1, whose left-moving fermions couple to a deformation of the tangent bundle. We then deduce the theory's chiral ring from these correlators, which reduces in the limit of zero deformation to the (2,2) ring. Finally, we compare our results with the computations carried out by Adams et al.[ABS04] and Katz and Sharpe[KS06]. We find immediate agreement with the latter and an interesting puzzle in completely matching the chiral ring of the…
After orientifold projection, the conifold singularity in hypermultiplet moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications cannot be avoided by geometric deformations. We study the non-perturbative fate of this singularity in a local model involving O6-planes and D6-branes wrapping the deformed conifold in Type IIA string theory. We classify possible A-type orientifolds of the deformed conifold and find that they cannot all be continued to the small resolution. When passing through the singularity on the deformed side, the O-plane charge generally jumps by the class of the vanishing cycle. To decid…
We determine the bosonic part of the superstring sigma model Lagrangian on $η$-deformed AdS5 x S5, and use it to compute the perturbative world-sheet scattering matrix of bosonic particles of the model. We then compare it with the large string tension limit of the q-deformed S-matrix and find exact agreement.
We study the beta-deformed matrix models using the method of refined topological string theory. The refined holomorphic anomaly equation and boundary conditions near the singular divisors of the underlying geometry fix the refined amplitudes recursively. We provide exact test of the quantum integrality conjecture in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. We check the higher genus exact formulae with perturbative matrix model calculations.
A U(N) Chern-Simons theory on noncommutative $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ is constructed as a $\q$-deformed field theory. The model is characterized by two symmetries: the BRST-symmetry and the topological linear vector supersymmetry. It is shown that the theory is finite and $\q_{\m\n}$-independent at the one loop level and that the calculations respect the restriction of the topological supersymmetry. Thus the topological $\q$-deformed Chern-Simons theory is an example of a model which is non-singular in the limit $\q \to 0$.
Noncommutative Chern - Simons' system is non-perturbatively investigated at a full deformed level. A deformed "commutative" phase space is found by a non-canonical change between two sets of deformed variables of noncommutative space. It is explored that in the "commutative" phase space all calculations are similar to the case in commutative space. Spectra of the energy and angular momentum of the Chern - Simons' system are obtained at the full deformed level. The noncommutative-commutative correspondence is clearly showed. Formalism for the general dynamical system is briefly presented. Some …
In this thesis, I investigate how to construct a self-consistent model of deformed general relativity using canonical methods and metric variables. The specific deformation of general covariance is predicted by some studies into loop quantum cosmology. I firstly find the minimally-deformed model for a scalar-tensor theory, thereby establishing a classical reference point, and investigate the cosmological effects of a non-minimal coupled scalar field. By treating the deformation perturbatively, I derive the deformed gravitational action which includes the nearest order of curvature corrections.…
We study the \cal{N}=1 SU(N) SYM theory which is a marginal deformation of the \cal{N}=4 theory, with a complex deformation parameter β. We consider the large N limit and study perturbatively the conformal invariance condition. We find that finiteness requires reality of the deformation parameter β.
Sharpening the holographic correspondence of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity and its dual matrix model description at a finite radial cutoff $λ$ through the $T\overline{T}$ deformation is of interest. To proceed, we simplify the problem by considering the Airy model and deform Airy correlators in the same way as in $T\overline{T}$-deformed JT gravity. We use those correlators to compute the annealed and quenched free energies for both $λ> 0$ and $λ< 0$ from an integral representation of the replica trick. At the leading order in $λ$ and low temperatures, we confirm that the genus-zero quenched …
We study families of two dimensional quantum field theories, labeled by a dimensionful parameter $μ$, that contain a holomorphic conserved $U(1)$ current $J(z)$. We assume that these theories can be consistently defined on a torus, so their partition sum, with a chemical potential for the charge that couples to $J$, is modular covariant. We further require that in these theories, the energy of a state at finite $μ$ is a function only of $μ$, and of the energy, momentum and charge of the corresponding state at $μ=0$, where the theory becomes conformal. We show that under these conditions, the t…
Any two dimensional quantum field theory that can be consistently defined on a torus is invariant under modular transformations. In this paper we study families of quantum field theories labeled by a dimensionful parameter $t$, that have the additional property that the energy of a state at finite $t$ is a function only of $t$ and of the energy and momentum of the corresponding state at $t=0$, where the theory becomes conformal. We show that under this requirement, the partition sum of the theory at $t=0$ uniquely determines the partition sum (and thus the spectrum) of the perturbed theory, to…
We compute perturbative worldsheet S-matrix of beta-deformed AdS/CFT in the strong and weak `t Hooft coupling limit to compare with exact S-matrix. For the purpose we take near BMN limit of TsT-transformed AdS_5 x S^5 with the twisted boundary condition and compute the S-matrix on worldsheet using light-cone gauge fixed Lagrangian. For the weak coupling side, we compute the S-matrix in the SU(3) sector by applying coordinate Bethe ansatz method to the one-loop dilatation operator obtained from the deformed super Yang-Mills theory. These analysis support the conjectured exact S-matrix in the le…
We give a self-contained discussion of recent progress in computing the non-perturbative effects of small non-holomorphic soft supersymmetry breaking, including a simple new derivation of these results based on an anomaly-free gauged U(1)_R background. We apply these results to N = 1 theories with deformed moduli spaces and conformal fixed points. In an SU(2) theory with a deformed moduli space, we completely determine the vacuum expectation values and induced soft masses. We then consider the most general soft breaking of supersymmetry in N = 2 SU(2) super-Yang-Mills theory. An N = 2 superfie…
We investigate epsilon-deformed N=2 superconformal gauge theories in four dimensions, focusing on the N=2* and Nf=4 SU(2) cases. We show how the modular anomaly equation obeyed by the deformed prepotential can be efficiently used to derive its non-perturbative expression starting from the perturbative one. We also show that the modular anomaly equation implies that S-duality is implemented by means of an exact Fourier transform even for arbitrary values of the deformation parameters, and then we argue that it is possible, perturbatively in the deformation, to choose appropriate variables such …
We consider non-perturbative effects in the beta-deformed N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We concentrate on the correlators of the Yang-Mills operators which correspond to the lowest Kaluza-Klein modes propagating on the dual supergravity background found by Lunin and Maldacena in hep-th/0502086. In particular, we calculate all multi-instanton contributions to these correlators in the beta-deformed SYM and find a compelling agreement with the results expected in supergravity.
We consider the $T\bar T$ deformation of 2d large $N$ YM theory on a cylinder, sphere and disk. The collective field theory Hamiltonian for the deformed theory is derived and the particular solutions to the equations of motion of the collective theory are found for the sphere. The account of the non-perturbative branch of the solution amounts to the first-order phase transition at the $(A,τ)$ plane. We analyze the third-order phase transition in the deformed theory on the disk and derive the critical area as a function of the boundary holonomy. A kind of Hagedorn behavior in the spectral densi…
We introduce new $κ$-star product describing the multiplication of quantized $κ$-deformed free fields. The $κ$-deformation of local free quantum fields originates from two sources: noncommutativity of space-time and the $κ$-deformation of field oscillators algebra - we relate these two deformations. We demonstrate that for suitable choice of $κ$-deformed field oscillators algebra the $κ$-deformed version of microcausality condition is satisfied, and it leads to the deformation of the Pauli-Jordan commutation function defined by the $κ$-deformed mass shell. We show by constructing the $κ$-defor…
We investigate generic n-point correlation functions of conformal field theories (CFTs), with $T\bar{T}$ and $J\bar{T}$ deformations, in terms of the perturbative CFT approach. We systematically obtain the first order correction to the generic correlation functions of CFTs with $T\bar{T}$ or $J\bar{T}$ deformation. We compute the out-of-time ordered correlation function (OTOC) in the Ising model with $T\bar{T}$ or $J\bar{T}$ deformation, which confirms that these deformations do not change the integrable property up to the first order level.
We calculate gauge instanton corrections to a class of higher derivative string effective couplings introduced in [1]. We work in Type I string theory compactified on K3xT2 and realise gauge instantons in terms of D5-branes wrapping the internal space. In the field theory limit we reproduce the deformed ADHM action on a general Ω-background from which one can compute the non-perturbative gauge theory partition function using localisation. This is a non-perturbative extension of [1] and provides further evidence for our proposal of a string theory realisation of the Ω-background.
The quantum and classical aspects of a deformed $c=1$ matrix model proposed by Jevicki and Yoneya are studied. String equations are formulated in the framework of Toda lattice hierarchy. The Whittaker functions now play the role of generalized Airy functions in $c<1$ strings. This matrix model has two distinct parameters. Identification of the string coupling constant is thereby not unique, and leads to several different perturbative interpretations of this model as a string theory. Two such possible interpretations are examined. In both cases, the classical limit of the string equations, whic…
We investigate the structure of the quantum S-matrix for perturbative excitations of the Pohlmeyer reduced version of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring following arXiv:0912.2958. The reduced theory is a fermionic extension of a gauged WZW model with an integrable potential. We use as an input the result of the one-loop perturbative scattering amplitude computation and an analogy with simpler reduced AdS_n x S^n theories with n=2,3. The n=2 theory is equivalent to the N=2 2-d supersymmetric sine-Gordon model for which the exact quantum S-matrix is known. In the n=3 case the one-loop perturbative S-ma…
In this paper, we continue the study of $T\bar{T}$ deformation in $d=1$ quantum mechanical systems and propose possible analogues of $J\bar{T}$ deformation and deformation by a general linear combination of $T\bar{T}$ and $J\bar{T}$ in quantum mechanics. We construct flow equations for the partition functions of the deformed theory, the solutions to which yields the deformed partition functions as integral of the undeformed partition function weighted by some kernels. The kernel formula turns out to be very useful in studying the deformed two-point functions and analyzing the thermodynamics of…
We study the large-$N$ dynamics of $T\bar{T}$-deformed two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory at genus zero. The 1/$N$-expansion of the free energy is obtained by exploiting the associated flow equation and the complete phase diagram of the theory is derived for both signs of the rescaled deformation parameter $τ$. We observe a third-order phase transition driven by instanton condensation, which is the deformed version of the familiar Douglas-Kazakov transition separating the weakly-coupled from the strongly-coupled phase. By studying said phases, we compute the deformation of both the perturbative…
We describe, in an algebraic way, the $κ$-deformed extended Snyder models, that depend on three parameters $β, κ$ and $λ$, which in a suitable algebra basis are described by the de Sitter algebras ${o}(1,N)$. The commutation relations of the algebra contain a parameter $λ$, which is used for the calculations of perturbative expansions. For such $κ$-deformed extended Snyder models we consider the Heisenberg double with dual generalized momenta sector, and provide the respective generalized quantum phase space depending on three parameters mentioned above. Further, we study for these models an a…
We study $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $ deformations of chiral bosons using the formalism due to Sen. For arbitrary numbers of left- and right-chiral bosons, we find that the $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $-deformed Lagrangian can be computed in closed form, giving rise to a novel non-local action in Sen's formalism. We establish that at the limit of infinite $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $ coupling, the equations of motion of deformed theory exhibits chiral decoupling. We then turn to a discussion of $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $-deformed chiral fermions, and point out that the stress tens…
A recent proposal relates two dimensional holographic conformal field theories deformed by the integrable $T\bar{T}$ flow to AdS$_3$ with a finite radial cutoff. We investigate this proposal by studying perturbative correlation functions on the two sides. For low point correlators of the stress tensor, we successfully match the deformed CFT results at large central charge to bulk results obtained in classical pure gravity. The deformed CFT also provides definite predictions for loop corrections in the bulk. We then include matter fields in the bulk. To reproduce the classical bulk two-point fu…
We continue our study of $λ$-deformed $σ$-models by setting up a $1/k$ perturbative expansion around the free field point for cosets, in particular for the $λ$-deformed $SU(2)/U(1)$ coset CFT. We construct an interacting field theory in which all deformation effects are manifestly encoded in the interaction vertices. Using this we reproduce the known $β$-function and the anomalous dimension of the composite operator perturbing away from the conformal point. We introduce the $λ$-dressed parafermions which have an essential Wilson-like phase in their expressions. Subsequently, we compute their a…
