We study $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $ deformations of chiral bosons using the formalism due to Sen. For arbitrary numbers of left- and right-chiral bosons, we find that the $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $-deformed Lagrangian can be computed in closed form, giving rise to a novel non-local action in Sen's formalism. We establish that at the limit of infinite $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $ coupling, the equations of motion of deformed theory exhibits chiral decoupling. We then turn to a discussion of $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $-deformed chiral fermions, and point out that the stress tensor of the $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $-deformed free fermion coincides with the undeformed seed theory. We explain this behaviour of the stress tensor by noting that the deformation term in the action is purely topological in nature and closely resembles the fermionic Wess-Zumino term in the Green-Schwarz formalism. In turn, this observation also explains a puzzle in the literature, viz. why the $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $ deformation of multiple free fermions truncate at linear order. We conclude by discussing the possibility of an interplay between $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $ deformations and bosonisation.
Recently we proposed a universal solvable irrelevant deformation of $AdS_3/CFT_2$ duality, which leads in the ultraviolet to a theory with a Hagedorn entropy [1]. In this note we provide a worldsheet description of this theory as a coset CFT, and compare its spectrum to the field theory predictions of [2,3].
In this paper we use the recently suggested conjecture about the integral representation for the flat coordinates on Frobenius manifolds, connected with the isolated singularities, to compute the flat coordinates and Saito primitive form on the space of the deformations of Gepner chiral ring $\widehat{SU}(3)_4$. We verify this conjecture comparing the expressions for the flat coordinates obtained from the conjecture with the one found by direct computation. The considered case is of a particular interest since together with the relevant and marginal deformations it has one irrelevant deformati…
We analyse the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of 2d CFTs in a special double-scaling limit, of large central charge and small deformation parameter. In particular, we derive closed formulae for the deformation of the product of left and right moving CFT characters on the torus. It is shown that the $1/c$ contribution takes the same form as that of a CFT, but with rescalings of the modular parameter reflecting a state-dependent change of coordinates. We also extend the analysis for more general deformations that involve $T\bar{T}$, $J\bar{T}$ and $T\bar{J}$ simultaneously. We comment on the implication…
We show that at the level of the equations of motion (i.e. classically), in the limit in which the $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $ deformation parameter is sent to infinity, the left- and right-chiral sectors of $ \text{T}\overline{\text{T}} $-deformed free theories decouple.
We initiate the study of $T\bar T$-like irrelevant solvable deformations in quantum field theory with boundaries and defects. For this purpose, we employ a general formalism developed in the context of spin chains, which allows us to derive both, the deformed bulk and boundary/defect scattering matrices of integrable models. Using the deformed scattering matrices, we derive the flow equation for the deformed finite volume spectrum, as well as the cylinder partition function and the exact $g$-function.
I show that under certain conditions it is possible to define consistent irrelevant deformations of interacting conformal field theories. The deformations are finite or have a unique running scale ("quasi-finite"). They are made of an infinite number of lagrangian terms and a finite number of independent parameters that renormalize coherently. The coefficients of the irrelevant terms are determined imposing that the beta functions of the dimensionless combinations of couplings vanish ("quasi-finiteness equations"). The expansion in powers of the energy is meaningful for energies much smaller t…
Recently it has been shown by Almheiri and Lin [1] that the reconstruction of black-hole interior is sensitive to knowing the exact coupling of the boundary theory even if the coupling is irrelevant. This motivates us to enlarge the set of the one-time and two-time toy models inspired from the SYK by deforming the same with \textit{irrelevant} coupling. We find that both half-wormholes as well as the wormholes persist in presence of the deformation, leading to a similar mechanism for curing the factorization problem. While for the one time case, the deformed partition function and its moments …
We discuss the systematics of obtaining the Callan-Symanzik equation within the framework of the gauge/gravity dualities. We present a completely general formula which in particular takes into account the new holographic renormalization results of arXiv:1102.2239. Non-trivial beta functions are obtained from new logarithmic terms in the radial expansion of the fields. The appearance of multi-trace counterterms is also discussed in detail and we show that mixing between single- and multi-trace operators leads to very specific non-linearities in the Callan-Symanzik equation. Additionally, we com…
This is a pedagogical review on $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation of two dimensional quantum field theories. It is based on three lectures which the author gave at ITP-CAS in December 2018. This review consists of four parts. The first part is a general introduction to $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation. Special emphasises are put on the deformed classical Lagrangian and the exact solvability of the spectrum. The second part focuses on the torus partition sum of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$/$\mathrm{J}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformed conformal field theories and …
The $T \overline{T}$ operator provides a universal irrelevant deformation of two-dimensional quantum field theories with remarkable properties, including connections to both string theory and holography beyond $\mathrm{AdS}$ spacetimes. In particular, it appears that a $T \overline{T}$-deformed theory is a kind of new structure, which is neither a local quantum field theory nor a full-fledged string theory, but which is nonetheless under some analytic control. On the other hand, supersymmetry is a beautiful extension of Poincaré symmetry which relates bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. …
We generalize our recent analysis [2006.13249] of probe string dynamics to the case of general single-trace $T\bar T$, $J\bar T$ and $T\bar J$ deformations. We show that in regions in coupling space where the bulk geometry is smooth, the classical trajectories of such strings are smooth and approach the linear dilaton boundary at either the far past or the far future. These trajectories give rise to quantum scattering states with arbitrarily high energies. When the bulk geometry has closed timelike curves (CTC's), the trajectories are singular for energies above a critical value $E_c$. This si…
Double trace deformations, that is products of two local operators, define perturbations of conformal field theories that can be studied exactly in the large-N limit. Even when the double trace deformation is irrelevant in the infrared, it is believed to flow to an ultraviolet fixed point. In this note we define the Kallen-Lehmann representation of the two-point function of a local operator O in a theory perturbed by the square of such operator. We use such representation to discover potential pathologies at intermediate points in the flow that may prevent to reach the UV fixed point. We apply…
It has been recently discovered that the $\text{T}\bar{\text{T}}$ deformation is closely-related to Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. At classical level, the introduction of this perturbation induces an interaction between the stress-energy tensor and space-time and the deformed EoMs can be mapped, through a field-dependent change of coordinates, onto the corresponding undeformed ones. The effect of this perturbation on the quantum spectrum is non-perturbatively described by an inhomogeneous Burgers equation. In this paper, we point out that there exist infinite families of models where the geometry …
We classify possible supersymmetry-preserving relevant, marginal, and irrelevant deformations of unitary superconformal theories in $d \geq 3$ dimensions. Our method only relies on symmetries and unitarity. Hence, the results are model independent and do not require a Lagrangian description. Two unifying themes emerge: first, many theories admit deformations that reside in multiplets together with conserved currents. Such deformations can lead to modifications of the supersymmetry algebra by central and non-central charges. Second, many theories with a sufficient amount of supersymmetry do not…
It has been argued several times in the past that the structure of the entropy formula for general non-extremal asymptotically flat black holes in four dimensions can be understood in terms of an underlying conformal symmetry. A recent implementation of this idea, carried out by Cvetič and Larsen, involves the replacement of a conformal factor in the original geometry by an alternative conformal factor in such a way that the near-horizon behavior and thermodynamic properties of the black hole remain unchanged, while only the asymptotics or "environment" of the geometry are modified. The soluti…

We introduce a new type of deformation of the chiral symmetry based on the deformation of the Laurent expansion of the conformal energy momentum tensor. Two kinds of solutions of the deformed equations of continuity are worked out. Known results are recovered, others features are also discussed.
We investigate the non-perturbative stability of asymptotically anti-de Sitter gravity coupled to tachyonic scalar fields with mass near the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. Such scalars are characterized by power-law radial decay near the AdS boundary, and typical boundary conditions are "Dirichlet" (fix the slower fall-off mode) or "Neumann" (fix the faster fall-off mode). More generally though, these "designer gravity" theories admit a large class of boundary conditions defined by a functional relation between the two modes. While previous stability proofs have considered boundary conditions t…
We define a two-parameter family of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model on an arbitrary compact group. The Yang-Baxter sigma-model and the principal chiral model with a Wess-Zumino term both correspond to limits in which one of the two parameters vanishes.
In the presence of an $Ω$-deformation, local operators generate a chiral algebra in the topological-holomorphic twist of a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetric field theory. We show that for a unitary $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superconformal field theory, the chiral algebra thus defined is isomorphic to the one introduced by Beem et al. Our definition of the chiral algebra covers nonconformal theories with insertions of suitable surface defects.
We systematically study deformations of chiral forms with applications to string theory in mind. To first order in the coupling constant, this problem can be translated into the calculation of the local BRST cohomological group at ghost number zero. We completely solve this cohomology and present detailed proofs of results announced in a previous letter. In particular, we show that there is no room for non-abelian, local, deformations of a pure system of chiral p-forms.
We study the connection of Moyal deformations of self-dual gravity and self-dual Yang-Mills theory to chiral higher-spin theories, and also to deformations of operator algebras in celestial holography. The relation to Moyal deformations illuminates various aspects of the structure of chiral higher-spin theories. For instance, the appearance of the self-dual kinematic algebra in all the theories considered here leads via the double copy to vanishing tree-level scattering amplitudes. Regarding celestial holography, the Moyal deformation of self-dual gravity was recently shown to lead to the loop…
We consider the irrelevant flow of classical Liouville field theory driven by the $T\bar T$ operator. After discussing properties of its exact action and equation of motion we construct an infinite set of conserved currents. We also find its vacuum solutions.
A large class of integrable deformations of the Principal Chiral Model, known as the Yang-Baxter deformations, are governed by skew-symmetric R-matrices solving the (modified) classical Yang-Baxter equation. We carry out a systematic investigation of these deformations in the presence of the Wess-Zumino term for simple Lie groups, working in a framework that treats both inhomogeneous and homogeneous deformations on the same footing. After analysing the cohomological conditions under which such a deformation is admissible, we consider an action for the general Yang-Baxter deformation of the Pri…

We study thermodynamic and transport observables of quantum critical states that arise in the infra-red limit of holographic renormalisation group flows. Although these observables are expected to exhibit quantum critical scaling, there are a number of cases in which their frequency and temperature dependences are in apparent contradiction with scaling theories. We study two different classes of examples, and show in both cases that the apparent breakdown of scaling is a consequence of the dependence of observables on an irrelevant deformation of the quantum critical state. By assigning scalin…
Every six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ SCFT on $\mathbf{R}^6$ contains a set of protected operators whose correlation functions are controlled by a two-dimensional chiral algebra. We provide an alternative construction of this chiral algebra by performing an $Ω$-deformation~of a topological-holomorphic twist of the $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory on $\mathbf{R}^6$ and restricting to the cohomology of a specific supercharge. In addition, we show that the central charge of the chiral algebra can be obtained by performing equivariant integration of the anomaly polynomial of the six-dimensional theo…
A residue-theoretic representation is given for massless matter fields in (quotients) of (weighted) \CY\ complete intersection models and the corresponding chiral operators in \LGO{s}. The well known polynomial deformations are thus generalized and the universal but somewhat abstract Koszul computations acquire a concrete realization and a general but more heuristic reinterpretation. A direct correspondence with a BRST-type analysis of constrained systems also emerges naturally.
We study the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of the chiral bosons and show the equivalence between the chiral bosons of opposite chiralities and the scalar fields at the Hamiltonian level under the deformation. We also derive the deformed Lagrangian of more generic theories which contain an arbitrary number of chiral bosons to all orders. By using these results, we derive the $T\bar{T}$ deformed boundary action of the AdS$_3$ gravity theory in the Chern-Simons formulation. We compute the deformed one-loop torus partition function, which satisfies the $T\bar{T}$ flow equation up to the one-loop order. F…
We propose a simple method for the computation of the flat coordinates and Saito primitive forms on Frobenius manifolds of the deformations of Jacobi rings associated with isolated singularities. The method is based on using a conjecture about integral representations for the flat coordinates and on the Saito cohomology theory. This reduces the computation to a simple linear problem. We consider the case of the deformed Gepner chiral rings. The knowledge of the flat structures of Frobenius manifolds can be used for exact solution of the models of the topological conformal field theories corres…
We describe deformations of non-linear (birational) representations of discrete groups generated by involutions, having their origin in the theory of the symmetric five-state Potts model. One of the deformation parameters can be seen as the number $q$ of states of a chiral Potts models. This analogy becomes exact when $q$ is a Fermat number. We analyze the stability of the corresponding dynamics, with a particular attention to orbits of finite order.
Motivated by a system consisting of a number of parallel M5-branes, we study possible local deformations of a chiral two-form in six dimensions. Working to first order in the coupling constant, this reduces to the study of the local BRST cohomological group at ghost number zero. We obtain an exhaustive list of all possible deformations. None of them allows for a satisfactory formulation of the M5-branes system leading to the conclusion that no local field theory can describe such a system.
A multi-parameter integrable deformation of the principal chiral model is presented. The Yang-Baxter and bi-Yang-Baxter sigma-models, the principal chiral model plus a Wess-Zumino term and the TsT transformation of the principal chiral model are all recovered when the appropriate deformation parameters vanish. When the Lie group is SU(2), we show that this four-parameter integrable deformation of the SU(2) principal chiral model corresponds to the Lukyanov model.
We study general perturbations of two-dimensional conformal field theories by holomorphic fields. It is shown that the genus one partition function is controlled by a contact term (pre-Lie) algebra given in terms of the operator product expansion. These models have applications to vertex operator algebras, two-dimensional QCD, topological strings, holomorphic anomaly equations and modular properties of generalized characters of chiral algebras such as the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra, that is treated in detail.
Super twistor space admits a certain (super) complex structure deformation that preserves the Poincare subgroup of the symmetry group PSL(4|4) and depends on 10 parameters. In a previous paper [hep-th/0502076], it was proposed that in twistor string theory this deformation corresponds to augmenting N=4 super Yang-Mills theory by a mass term for the left-chirality spinors. In this paper we analyze this proposal in more detail. We calculate 4-particle scattering amplitudes of fermions, gluons and scalars and show that they are supported on holomorphic curves in the deformed twistor space.
We investigate deformations of four-dimensional N=(1,1) euclidean superspace induced by nonanticommuting fermionic coordinates. We essentially use the harmonic superspace approach and consider nilpotent bi-differential Poisson operators only. One variant of such deformations (termed chiral nilpotent) directly generalizes the recently studied chiral deformation of N=(1/2,1/2) superspace. It preserves chirality and harmonic analyticity but generically breaks N=(1,1) to N=(1,0) supersymmetry. Yet, for degenerate choices of the constant deformation matrix N=(1,1/2) supersymmetry can be retained, i…
We review shortly present status of quantum deformations of Poincaré and conformal supersymmetries. After recalling the $κ$-deformation of $\hbox{D=4}$ Poincaré supersymmetries we describe the corresponding star product multiplication for chiral superfields. In order to describe the deformation of chiral vertices in momentum space the integration formula over $κ$-deformed chiral superspace is proposed.
We study the SO(4)x SU(2) invariant Q-deformation of Euclidean N=(1,1) gauge theories in the harmonic superspace formulation. This deformation preserves chirality and Grassmann harmonic analyticity but breaks N=(1,1) to N=(1,0) supersymmetry. The action of the deformed gauge theory is an integral over the chiral superspace, and only the purely chiral part of the covariant superfield strength contributes to it. We give the component form of the N=(1,0) supersymmetric action for the gauge groups U(1) and U(n>1). In the U(1) and U(2) cases, we find the explicit nonlinear field redefinition (Seibe…
We consider a general (beyond $T\bar T$) deformation of the 2D $O(N+1)$ $σ$-model by the irrelevant dimension-four operators. The theory deformed in this most general way is not integrable, and the $S$-matrix loses its factorization properties. We perform the all-order summation of the leading infrared logs for the $2 \to 2$ scattering amplitude and provide the exact result for the $2 \to 2$ $S$-matrix in the leading logarithmic approximation. These results can provide us with new insights into the properties of the theories deformed by irrelevant operators more general than the $T\bar T$ defo…
After a short review of the algebraic setting of N=2 superconformal field theories, their chiral ring and their perturbations, I present some recent results on curious relations between the integrability of their perturbations and algebraic properties of their deformed chiral ring. (Lecture given at Hang-zhou, China, Sept 1993)
We consider the massless charge-$N$ Schwinger model and its deformation with two four-fermion operators. Without the deformations, this model exhibits chiral symmetry breaking without confinement. It is usually asserted that the massless Schwinger model is always deconfined and a string tension emerges only when a mass for the fermion field is turned on. We show that in the presence of these four-fermion operators, the massless theory can in fact confine. One of the four-fermion deformations is chirally neutral, and is a marginal deformation. The other operator can be relevant or irrelevant, a…
We construct a solvable deformation of two-dimensional theories with $(2,2)$ supersymmetry using an irrelevant operator which is a bilinear in the supercurrents. This supercurrent-squared operator is manifestly supersymmetric, and equivalent to $T\bar{T}$ after using conservation laws. As illustrative examples, we deform theories involving a single $(2,2)$ chiral superfield. We show that the deformed free theory is on-shell equivalent to the $(2,2)$ Nambu-Goto action. At the classical level, models with a superpotential exhibit more surprising behavior: the deformed theory exhibits poles in th…
A geometric formulation of the Moyal deformation for the Self-dual Yang-Mills theory and the Chiral Model approach to Self-dual gravity is given. We find in Fedosov's geometrical construction of deformation quantization the natural geometrical framework associated to the Moyal deformation of the six-dimensional version of the second heavenly equation and the Park-Husain heavenly equation. The Wess-Zumino-Witten-like Lagrangian of Self-dual gravity is re-examined within this context.
The overlap formulation is applied to calculate the chiral determinant on a two-dimensional torus with twisted boundary conditions. We evaluate first the continuum overlap, which is convergent and well-defined, and yields the correct string theory result for both the real and imaginary parts of the effective action. We then show that the lattice version of the overlap gives the continuum overlap results in the limit when the lattice spacing tends to zero, and that the subleading terms in that limit are irrelevant.
We consider non(anti)commutative superspace with coordinate dependent deformation parameters $C^{αβ}$. We show that a chiral ${\cal N}=1/2$ supersymmetry can be defined and that chiral and antichiral superfields are still closed under the Moyal-Weyl associative product implementing the deformation. A consistent ${\cal N}=1/2$ Super Yang-Mills deformed theory can be constructed provided $C^{αβ}$ satisfies a suitable condition which can be connected with the graviphoton background at the origin of the deformation. After adding matter we also discuss the Konishi anomaly and the gluino condensatio…
We consider critical gravity in three dimensions; that is, the New Massive Gravity theory formulated about Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space with the specific value of the graviton mass for which it results dual to a two-dimensional conformal field theory with vanishing central charge. As it happens with Kerr black holes in four-dimensional critical gravity, in three-dimensional critical gravity the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes have vanishing mass and vanishing angular momentum. However, provided suitable asymptotic conditions are chosen, the theory may also admit solutions carrying non-van…
We study a toy model of the Kerr/CFT correspondence using string theory on AdS$_3 \times S^3$. We propose a single trace irrelevant deformation of the dual CFT generated by a vertex operator with spacetime dimensions (2,1). This operator shares the same quantum numbers as the integrable $T\bar{J}$ deformation of two-dimensional CFTs where $\bar{J}$ is a chiral $U(1)$ current. We show that the deformation is marginal on the worldsheet and that the target spacetime is deformed to null warped AdS$_3$ upon dimensional reduction. We also calculate the spectrum of the deformed theory on the cylinder…
We apply an improved version of Batalin-Fradkin-Tyutin (BFT) Hamiltonian method to the a=1 chiral Schwinger Model, which is much more nontrivial than the a>1.$ one. Furthermore, through the path integral quantization, we newly resolve the problem of the non-trivial $δ$ function as well as that of the unwanted Fourier parameter $ξ$ in the measure. As a result, we explicitly obtain the fully gauge invariant partition function, which includes a new type of Wess-Zumino (WZ) term irrelevant to the gauge symmetry as well as usual WZ action.
Two issues regarding the interactions of the chiral two-forms are reviewed. First, the problem of constructing Lorentz-invariant self-couplings of a single chiral two-form is investigated in the light of the Dirac-Schwinger condition on the energy-momentum tensor commutation relations. We show how the Perry-Schwarz condition follows from the Dirac-Schwinger criterion and point out that consistency of the gravitational coupling is automatic. Secondly, we study the possible local deformations of chiral two-forms. This problem reduces to the study of the local BRST cohomological group at ghost nu…
We will demonstrate how calculations in toric geometry can be used to compute quantum corrections to the relations in the chiral ring for certain gauge theories. We focus on the gauge theory of the del Pezzo 2, and derive the chiral ring relations and quantum deformations to the vacuum moduli space using Affleck-Dine-Seiberg superpotential arguments. Then we calculate the versal deformation to the corresponding toric geometry using a method due to Altmann, and show that the result is equivalent to the deformation calculated using gauge theory. In an appendix we will apply this technique to a f…
