We discuss distinctive features of spiral states in bulk chiral magnets such as MnSi and Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ that stem from the effect of the cubic magneto-crystalline anisotropy. First of all, at both the helical-to-conical and the conical-to-ferromagnetic transitions, taking place at H$_{c1}$ and H$_{c2}$, respectively, the cubic anisotropy leads to reversible or irreversible jump-like reorientations of the spiral wavevectors. The subtle interplay between the easy and hard anisotropy axes gives rise to a phase transition between elliptically distorted conical states almost without any detectable change in the period. We show that the competition between on-site cubic and exchange anisotropy terms can also lead to oblique spiral states. Our work gives clear directions for further experimental studies to reveal theoretically predicted spiral states in cubic helimagnets beyond the aforementioned well-established states thus, can help to understand the magnetic phase diagram of these archetypal skyrmion hosts. In addition, we show that properties of isolated skyrmions such as inter-skyrmion attraction, orientation and/or nucleation are also rooted in the properties of host spirals states, in which skyrmions are stabilized.
We investigate the field-induced crossover between two types of isolated skyrmions that exist within the conical phase of cubic helimagnets and orient themselves either along or perpendicular to the field. Such a crossover takes place for the same value of the field, at which the closely packed skyrmion lattice was predicted to stabilize in the A-phase region. The clusters and a skyrmion lattice comprised by the skyrmions perpendicular to the field, however, are unfavorable and lose their stability as compared with the skyrmions parallel to the field. We also followed transformation of perpend…
The influence of in-plane and canted magnetic fields on spin spirals and skyrmions in atomic bilayer islands of palladium and iron on an Ir(111) substrate is investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy at low temperatures. It is shown that the spin spiral propagation direction is determined by the island's border which can be explained by equilibrium state calculations on a triangular lattice. By application of in-plane fields, the spin spiral reorientates its propagation direction and becomes distorted, thereby allowing a proof for its cycloidal nature. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that…
Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like topological excitations that recently generated much interest as candidates for future spintronic devices based on skyrmion small size, enhanced topological stability, and/or mutual interaction. Here we examine the properties of isolated skyrmions in a frustrated chiral magnet with competing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and frustrated exchange interactions. We show that the skyrmion size drastically decreases even for small values of competing stabilization mechanisms. Skyrmion mutual interaction remains attracting as is inherent for frustrated skyrmions, but the …
We report the discovery of attractive magnetic skyrmions and their clusters in non-centrosymmetric ferromagnets. These three-dimensional solitons have been predicted to exist in the cone phase of chiral ferromagnets (J. Phys: Condens. Matter 28 (2016) 35LT01) and are fundamentally different from the more common repulsive axisymmetric skyrmions that occur in the magnetically saturated state. We present real-space images of these skyrmion clusters in thin (~70 nm) single-crystal samples of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ taken using transmission electron microscopy and develop a phenomenological theory describin…
Emergent phenomena and functions arising from topological electron-spin textures in real space or momentum space are attracting growing interest for new concept of states of matter as well as for possible applications to spintronics. One such example is a magnetic skyrmion, a topologically stable nanoscale spin vortex structure characterized by a topological index. Real-space regular arrays of skyrmions are described by combination of multi-directional spin helixes. Nanoscale configurations and characteristics of the two-dimensional skyrmion hexagonal-lattice have been revealed extensively by …
Spin waves in antiferromagnetic materials have great potential for next-generation magnonic technologies. However, their properties and their dependence on the type of ground-state antiferromagnetic structure are still open questions. Here, we investigate theoretically spin waves in one- and two-dimensional model systems with a focus on noncollinear antiferromagnetic textures such as spin spirals and skyrmions of opposite topological charges. We address in particular the nonreciprocal spin excitations recently measured in bulk antiferromagnet $α$--$\text{Cu}_2\text{V}_2\text{O}_7$ utilizing in…
Formation of isolated chiral skyrmions by homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation has been studied in thin layers of cubic helimagnets via elongation of torons and chiral bobbers, correspondingly. Both torons and bobbers are localized in three dimensions, contain singularities, and according to the theoretical analysis within the standard phenomenological models can exist as metastable states in saturated and modulated phases of noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets. Their elongation into the defect-free skyrmion filament is facilitated by small anisotropic contributions making skyrmion cores negat…
This paper reports on magnetometry and magnetoresistance measurements of MnSi epilayers performed in out-of-plane magnetic fields. We present a theoretical analysis of the chiral modulations that arise in confined cubic helimagnets where the uniaxial anisotropy axis and magnetic field are both out-of-plane. In contrast to in-plane field measurements (Wilson et al., Phys. Rev. B 86, 144420 (2012)), the hard-axis uniaxial anisotropy in MnSi/Si(111) increases the energy of (111)-oriented skyrmions and in-plane helicoids relative to the cone phase, and makes the cone phase the only stable magnetic…
We investigate the existence of spiral ordering in the planar spin orientation of skyrmions localised on a face centered rectangular lattice (FCRL). We use the non-linear sigma model (NLSM) to numerically calculate the minimum energy configurations of this lattice around the $ν=1$ quantum Hall ground state. Our variational ansatz contains an angle $θ$, characterising the FCRL and an angle $q$, characterising the orientational order. As $ν$ is increased towards one, there is a smooth transition from the triangular lattice (TL) characterised by $(θ,q) = (120^o,120^o)$ to FCRLs with spiral orient…
Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) investigations of modulated states in a FeGe wedge and detailed calculations demonstrate that chiral twists arising near the surfaces of noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets (Meynell et al. Phys. Rev. B, 90, 014406 (2014)) provide a stabilization mechanism for skyrmion lattices and helicoids in cubic helimagnet nanolayers. The calculated magnetic phase diagram for free standing cubic helimagnet nanolayers shows that magnetization processes in these compounds fundamentally differ from those in bulk cubic helimagnets and are characterized by the first-o…
We study theoretically the dynamics of the spin textures, i.e., Skyrmion crystal (SkX) and spiral structure (SS), in two-dimensional helical magnets under external current. By numerically solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, it is found that (i) the critical current density of the motion is much lower for SkX compared with SS in agreement with the recent experiment, (ii) there is no intrinsic pinning effect for SkX and the deformation of the internal structure of Skyrmion reduces the pinning effect dramatically, (iii) the Bragg intensity of SkX shows strong time-dependence as can be o…
Skyrmions dynamics in the approximation of point-particle skyrmions is considered in the multiferroic insulators, where the spiral magnetic structure is accompanied by finite electric dipole moment. The skyrmion motion is studied in the gradients of perpendicular magnetic and electric fields. The nonuniform magnetic field with a fixed gradient magnitude leads to the spiral motion, where skyrmion circulates in the plane perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field. The frequency of circulation is fixed by the derivative of the external magnetic field and the magnitude of the dipole moment. …
Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy has been applied to study non-collinear spin textures of a Mn monolayer on a four-fold symmetric W(001) substrate revealing a zero-field spin spiral ground state and two different types of rotational domain walls. With an applied magnetic field of 9 T, we observe a coexistence of the spin spiral and the skyrmion phase, even though a previous theoretical study reported that the phase transition occurs at 18 T. The skyrmions show a roughly hexagonal arrangement despite the square lattice symmetry of the W(001) substrate. Based on a reduced set of ener…
We study realizations of spirals and skyrmions in two-dimensional antiferromagnets with a triangular lattice on an inversion-symmetry-breaking substrate. As a possible material realization, we investigate the adsorption of transition-metal atoms (Cr, Mn, Fe, or Co) on a monolayer of MoS$_2$, WS$_2$, or WSe$_2$ and obtain the exchange, anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction parameters using first-principles calculations. Using energy minimization and parallel-tempering Monte-Carlo simulations, we determine the magnetic phase diagrams for a wide range of interaction parameters. We fin…
In cubic noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets uniaxial distortions suppress the helical states and stabilize Skyrmion lattices in a broad range of thermodynamical parameters. Using a phenomenological theory for modulated and localized states in chiral magnets, the equilibrium parameters of the Skyrmion and helical states are derived as functions of the applied magnetic field and induced uniaxial anisotropy. These results show that due to a combined effect of induced uniaxial anisotropy and an applied magnetic field Skyrmion lattices can be formed as thermodynamically stable states in large interval…
The coupling between angular (twisting) and longitudinal modulations arising near the ordering temperature of noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets strongly influences the structure of skyrmion states and their evolution in an applied magnetic field. In the precursor states of cubic helimagnets, a continuous transformation of skyrmion lattices into the saturated state is replaced by the first-order processes accompanied by the formation of multidomain states. Recently the effects imposed by dominant longitudinal modulations have been reported in bulk MnSi and FeGe. Similar phenomena can be observed …
We report the direct evidence of field-dependent character of the interaction between individual magnetic skyrmions as well as between skyrmions and edges in B20-type FeGe nanostripes observed by means of high resolution Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that above certain critical values of external magnetic field the character of such long-range skyrmion interactions change from attraction to repulsion. Experimentally measured equilibrium inter-skyrmion and skrymion-edge distances as function of applied magnetic field shows quantitative agreement with the results of micro…
Topologically stable field configurations appear in many fields of physics, from elementary particles to condensed matter and cosmology. During the last decade, chiral liquid crystals and chiral magnets took on the role of model objects for experimental investigation of topological solitons and understanding of their nonsingular field configurations. Here we introduce a paradigm of facile skyrmionic networks with mutually-orthogonal orientations of constituent isolated skyrmions. Such networks are envisioned as a novel concept of spintronic devices and are presumably responsible for precursor …
In the cubic chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si a metastable state comprising of topologically nontrivial spin whirls, so-called skyrmions, may be preserved down to low temperatures by means of field cooling the sample. This metastable skyrmion state is energetically separated from the topologically trivial ground state by a considerable potential barrier, a phenomenon also referred to as topological protection. Using magnetic force microscopy on the surface of a bulk crystal, we show that certain positions are preferentially and reproducibly decorated with metastable skyrmions, indicating tha…
The revisited theoretical phase diagrams for thin films of cubic helimagnets with the easy-plane anisotropy are shown to have different topology as previously reported [Phys. Rev. B 85, 094429 (2012)]. For both in-plane and out-of-plane directions of an applied magnetic field, the phase diagrams exhibit extensive areas of stable skyrmions, which overlap for a wide range of anisotropy parameters. Although the existence of the out-of-plane skyrmions was contradicted within the previous theoretical models, we prove that additional surface twists lead to their stability, while the moderate easy-pl…
We find numerically skyrmionic textures with skyrmion number Q=0 in ferromagnets with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and perpendicular anisotropy. These have the form of a skyrmion-antiskyrmion pair and may be called chiral droplets. They are stable in an infinite film as well as in disc-shaped magnetic elements. Droplets are found for values of the parameters close to the transition from the ferromagnetic to the spiral phase. We study their motion under spin-transfer torque. They move in the direction of the spin flow and, thus, their dynamics are drastically different than the Hall dy…
We have utilised a high spatial resolution imaging method, Differential Phase Contrast (DPC) performed in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), for precise measurement of the magnetic induction distribution in skyrmion states in noncentrosymmetric magnetically ordered materials. Applied to investigate the internal structure of hexagonal skyrmion lattice cells, stabilised by an out-plane applied magnetic field in an FeGe nanowedge specimen, mapping of the in-plane component of magnetic induction has yielded "average" skyrmion profiles and observation of internal six-fold symmetry.…
The ground states of square lattice two-dimensional antiferromagnets with anisotropy in an external magnetic field are determined using Monte Carlo simulations and compared to theoretical analysis. We find a new phase in between the spin-flop and spiral phase that shows strong similarity to skyrmions in ferromagnetic thin films. We show that this phase arises as a result of the competition between Zeeman and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction energies of the magnetic system. Moreover, we find that isolated (anti-)skyrmions are stabilized in finite-sized systems, even at higher temperatures. The…
Chiral skyrmion states exist in non - centrosymmetric magnetic crystals as a consequence of the asymmetric exchange Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that destroy the homogeneous magnetic state and generally lead to twisted incommensurate magnetic spin-structures. Recently, skyrmion lattices and free skyrmions in magnetic layers of the chiral helimagnets with the noncentrosymmetric cubic B20 crystal structure have been observed. The stabilization of these states and their transformation properties impressively illustrate the theoretically predicted solitonic nature of these chiral two-dimensi…
Skyrmions are important in topological quantum field theory for being soliton solutions of a nonlinear sigma model and in information technology for their attractive applications. Skyrmions are believed to be circular and stripy spin textures appeared in the vicinity of skyrmion crystals are termed spiral, helical, and cycloid spin orders, but not skyrmions. Here we present convincing evidences showing that those stripy spin textures are skyrmions, "siblings" of circular skyrmions in skyrmion crystals and "cousins" of isolated circular skyrmions. Specifically, isolated skyrmions are excitation…
We determined the parameters of a classical spin Hamiltonian describing an Fe monolayer on Pd(111) surface with a Pt_{1-x}Ir_{x} alloy overlayer from ab initio calculations. While the ground state of the system is ferromagnetic for x=0.00, it becomes a spin spiral state as Ir is intermixed into the overlayer. Although the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction is present in the system, we will demonstrate that the frustrated isotropic exchange interactions play a prominent role in creating the spin spiral state, and these frustrated couplings lead to an attractive interaction between skyrmions at sh…
We demonstrate a fast numerical method of theoretical studies of skyrmion lattice or spiral order in magnetic materials with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. The method is based on the Fourier expansion of the magnetization combined with a minimization of the free energy functional of the magnetic material in Fourier space, yielding the optimal configuration of the system for any given set of parameters. We employ a Lagrange multiplier technique in order to satisfy micromagnetic constraints. We apply this method to a system that exhibits, depending on the parameter choice, ferromagnetic, skyr…
Spin waves are the low-energy excitations of magnetically ordered materials. They are key elements in the stability analysis of the ordered phase and have a wealth of technological applications. Recently, we showed that spin waves of a magnetic nanowire may carry a definite amount of orbital angular momentum components along the propagation direction. This helical, in addition to the chiral, character of the spin waves is related to the spatial modulations of the spin wave phase across the wire. It, however, remains a challenge to generate and control such modes with conventional magnetic fiel…
Skyrmions, topologically protected vortex-like nanometric spin textures in magnets, have been attracting increasing attention for emergent electromagnetic responses and possible technological applications for spintronics. In particular, metallic magnets with chiral and cubic/tetragonal crystal structure may have high potential to host skyrmions that can be driven by low electrical current excitation. However, experimental observations of skyrmions have so far been limited to below room temperature for the metallic chiral magnets, specifically for the MnSi-type B20 compounds. Toward technologic…
A continuum model of frustrated ferromagnets is analyzed in detail in the regime of low applied magnetic field, $H_0<1/4$, where the ground state is a spatially varying conical spiral. By changing variables to a corotating spin field, the model is reformulated as a gauged sigma model in a fixed background gauge, allowing the construction of stable isolated Skyrmions, and stable multi-Skyrmion clusters, which approach the conical ground state at spatial infinity. Owing to the spatial anisotropy induced by the ground state, these Skyrmions exhibit only discrete symmetries, and are of neither Née…
We investigate the stability of Néel skyrmions against tilted magnetic fields, in polar magnets with uniaxial anisotropy ranging from easy-plane to easy-axis type. We construct the corresponding phase diagrams and investigate the internal structure of skewed skyrmions with displaced cores. We find that moderate easy-plane anisotropy increases the stability range of Néel skyrmions for fields along the symmetry axis, while moderate easy-axis anisotropy enhances their robustness against tilted magnetic fields. We stress that the direction, along which the skyrmion cores are shifted, depends on th…
Axisymmetric magnetic lines of nanometer sizes (chiral vortices or skyrmions) have been predicted to exist in a large group of noncentrosymmetric crystals more than two decades ago. Recently these magnetic textures have been directly observed in nanolayers of cubic helimagnets and monolayers of magnetic metals. We develop a micromagnetic theory of chiral skyrmions in thin magnetic layers for magnetic materials with intrinsic and induced chirality. Such particle-like and stable micromagnetic objects can exist in broad ranges of applied magnetic fields including zero field. Chiral skyrmions can …
Quantization of topological charges determines the various topological spin textures that are expected to play a key role in future spintronic devices. While the magnetic skyrmion with a unit topological charge Q has been extensively studied, spin textures with other integer valued have not been verified well so far. Here, we report the real-space image, creation, and manipulation of a type of multi Q three-dimensional skyrmionic texture, where a circular spin spiral ties a bunch of skyrmion tubes. We define these objects as skyrmion bundles, and show they have arbitrarily integer values Q fro…
A persistent spin helix (PSH) is a robust helical spin-density pattern arising in disordered 2D electron gases with Rashba $α$ and Dresselhaus $β$ spin-orbit (SO) tuned couplings, i.e., $α=\pmβ$. Here we investigate the emergence of a Persistent Skyrmion Lattice (PSL) resulting from the coherent superposition of PSHs along orthogonal directions -- crossed PSHs -- in wells with two occupied subbands $ν=1,2$. For realistic GaAs wells we show that the Rashba $α_ν$ and Dresselhaus $β_ν$ couplings can be simultaneously tuned to equal strengths but opposite signs, e.g., $α_1= β_1$ and $α_2=-β_2$. In…
We investigate the impact of the local spin texture on the differential conductance by scanning tunneling microscopy. In the focus is the previously found non-collinear magnetoresistance, which originates from spin mixing effects upon electron hopping between adjacent sites with canted magnetic moments. In the present work it is studied with lateral resolution both for the zero magnetic field spin spiral state as well as for individual magnetic skyrmions at different magnetic field values. We analyze in detail the response of the differential conductance and find different dependencies of peak…
We study in this paper effects of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) magnetoelectric coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic layers in a superlattice formed by alternate magnetic and ferroelectric films.Magnetic films are films of simple cubic lattice with Heisenberg spins interacting with each other via an exchange $J$ and a DM interaction with the ferroelectric interface. Electrical polarizations of $\pm{1}$ are assigned at simple cubic lattice sites in the ferroelectric films. We determine the ground-state (GS) spin configuration in the magnetic film. In zero field, the GS is periodically non co…
Recent studies show superconductivity provides new perspectives on spintronics. We study a heterostructure composed of an s-wave superconductor and a cubic chiral-magnet that can stabilize a topological spin texture, a skyrmion. We propose a supercurrent-induced spin torque that originates from the spin-orbit coupling, and we show that the spin torque can drive a skyrmion in an efficient way that reduces Joule heating. We also study the band structure of Bogoliubov quasiparticles and show the existence of Weyl points, whose positions can be controlled by the direction of the magnetization. Thi…
Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy is used to identify the magnetic state of different thin films on a Re(0001) substrate, which becomes superconducting below 1.7 K. All magnetic films contain an Fe/Ir interface, which is known to facilitate the emergence of non-collinear magnetic order. For Fe monolayers on ultra-thin Ir films of different thickness we find several different atomic-scale magnetic states. For Pd/Fe bilayers we find nano-scale spin spirals as magnetic ground states for Ir thicknesses of three and four atomic layers. In applied magnetic fields skyrmions emerge, and in …
B20 compounds are the playground for various non-trivial magnetic textures such as skyrmions, which are topologically protected states. Recent measurements on B20-MnGe indicate no clear consensus on its magnetic behavior, which is characterized by the presence of either spin-spirals or 3-dimensional objects interpreted to be a cubic lattice of hedgehogs and anti-hedgehogs. Utilizing a massively parallel linear scaling all-electron density functional algorithm, we find from full first-principles simulations on cells containing thousands of atoms that upon increase of the compound volume, the st…

The length scale of the magnetization gradients in chiral magnets is determined by the relativistic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Thus, even conventional spin-transfer torques are controlled by the relativistic spin-orbit coupling in these systems, and additional relativistic corrections to the current-induced torques and magnetization damping become important for a complete understanding of the current-driven magnetization dynamics. We theoretically study the effects of reactive and dissipative homogeneous spin-orbit torques and anisotropic damping on the current-driven skyrmion dynamics…
FeGe in the B20 phase is an experimentally well-studied prototypical chiral magnet exhibiting helical spirals, skyrmion lattices and individual skyrmions with a robust length of 70~nm. While the helical spiral ground state can be verified by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, this feature size could not be reproduced even approximately. To develop a coherent picture of the discrepancy between experiment and theory, we investigate in this work the magnetic properties of FeGe from first-principles using different electronic-structure methods. We study atomistic as …
By introducing biquadratic together with usual bilinear ferromagnetic nearest neighbor exchange interaction in a square lattice, we find that the energy of the spin-wave mode is minimized at a finite wavevector for a vanishingly small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), supporting a ground state with spin-spiral structure whose pitch length is unusually short as found in some of the experiments. Apart from reproducing the magnetic structures that can be obtained in a canonical model with nearest neighbor exchange interaction only, a numerical simulation of this model with further introduc…
Topologically protected magnetic structures provide a robust platform for low power consumption devices for computation and data storage. Examples of these structures are skyrmions, chiral domain walls, and spin spirals. Here we use scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis to unveil the presence of chiral counterclockwise Néel spin spirals at the surface of a bulk van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT), at zero magnetic field. These Néel spin spirals survive up to FGT's Curie temperature $T_\mathrm{C}= 220 \mathrm{~K}$, with little change in the periodicity $p=300 \mathr…
Ferromagnets crystallizing in structures described by chiral cubic space groups, including compounds with the B20 or $β$-Mn structures, are known to host long-period chiral spin textures such as skyrmion lattices. These spin textures are stabilized by a competition between ferromagnetic exchange and antisymmetric Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange, which is enhanced by the spin-orbit coupling associated with high-atomic-number elements. For real-world application, it is desirable to find materials that can host compact skyrmion lattices at readily accessible temperatures. Here, we report on t…
Topologically protected nanoscale spin textures, known as magnetic skyrmions, possess particle-like properties and feature emergent magnetism effects. In bulk cubic heli-magnets, distinct skyrmion resonant modes are already identified using a technique like ferromagnetic resonance in spintronics. However, direct light-matter coupling between microwave photons and skyrmion resonance modes has not been demonstrated yet. Utilising two distinct cavity systems, we realise to observe a direct interaction between the cavity resonant mode and two resonant skyrmion modes, the counter-clockwise gyration…
