Recently, there has been an increased interest in the application of machine learning (ML) techniques to a variety of problems in condensed matter physics. In this regard, of particular significance is the characterization of simple and complex phases of matter. Here, we use a ML approach to construct the full phase diagram of a well known spin model combining ferromagnetic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions where topological phases emerge. At low temperatures, the system is tuned from a spiral phase to a skyrmion crystal by a magnetic field. However, thermal fluctuations induce two types of intermediate phases, bimerons and skyrmion gas, which are not as easily determined as spirals or skyrmion crystals. We resort to large scale Monte Carlo simulations to obtain low temperature spin configurations, and train a convolutional neural network (CNN), taking only snapshots at specific values of the DM couplings, to classify between the different phases, focusing on the intermediate and intricate topological textures. We then apply the CNN to higher temperature configurations and to other DM values, to construct a detailed magnetic field-temperature phase diagram, achieving outstanding results. We discuss the importance of including the disordered paramagnetic phases in order to get the phase boundaries, and finally, we compare our approach with other ML algorithms.
We determined the magnetic B-T phase diagram of PdFe bilayer on Ir(111) surface by performing Monte Carlo and spin dynamics simulations based on an effective classical spin model. The parameters of the spin model were determined by ab initio methods. At low temperatures we found three types of ordered phases, while at higher temperatures, below the completely disordered paramagnetic phase, a large region of the phase diagram is associated with a fluctuation-disordered phase. Within the applied model, this state is characterized by the presence of skyrmions with finite lifetime. According to th…
Using SQUID magnetometry techniques, we have studied the change in magnetization versus applied ac electric field, i.e. the magnetoelectric (ME) susceptibility dM/dE, in the chiral-lattice ME insulator Cu2OSeO3. Measurements of the dM/dE response provide a sensitive and efficient probe of the magnetic phase diagram, and we observe clearly distinct responses for the different magnetic phases, including the skyrmion lattice phase. By combining our results with theoretical calculation, we estimate quantitatively the ME coupling strength as λ = 0.0146 meV/(V/nm) in the conical phase. Our study dem…
Simple mean-field approach for frustrated antiferromagnets on hexagonal lattices, aimed to describe the high-temperature part of the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, is proposed. It is shown, that an interplay between modulation vector symmetry, Zeeman energy and magneto-dipolar interaction leads to stabilization of the triple-$Q$ skyrmion lattice in a certain region of the phase diagram. Corresponding analytical expressions for phase boundaries are derived. It is argued that the developed theory can be applied for the description of the high-temperature part of the phase diagram obse…
Detailed dynamics of a moving magnetic skyrmion lattice in MnSi observed using a small-angle neutron scattering under an alternating electric current flow
The measured melting curve $T_{m}(ν)$ between the crystal and liquid phases is analyzed using thermodynamics to extract the change of magnetization $ΔM$ as a function of the Landau level filling factor \ $ν,$ near $ν=1$. \ An explanation of $ΔM$($ν)$ is proposed \ in terms of Skyrmions. \ Near $ν=3$, a Wigner crystal is the most probable solid phase, experiments excluding Skyrmions.
Skyrmion crystal formation and temperature -- magnetic field phase diagram of the frustrated tirangular-lattice Heisenberg magnet with easy-axis masugnetic anisotropy
Skyrmions are topological magnetic textures that can arise in non-centrosymmetric ferromagnetic materials. In most systems experimentally investigated to date, skyrmions emerge as classical objects. However, the discovery of skyrmions with nanometer length scales has sparked interest in their quantum properties. Here, we simulate the ground states of two-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg lattices with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and discover a broad region in the zero-temperature phase diagram which hosts quantum skyrmion lattices. We argue that the quantum skyrmion lattice phase can be…
A detailed investigation of the magnetization processes in epitaxial MnSi thin film reveals the existence of elliptically distorted skyrmion strings that lie in the plane of the film. We provide proof that the uniaxial anisotropy stabilizes this state over extended regions of the magnetic phase diagram. Theoretical analysis of an observed cascade of first-order phase transitions is based on rig- orous numerical calculations of competing chiral modulations, which shows the existence of helicoids, elliptic skyrmions, and cone phases.
The phase diagram of cubic helimagnets near the critical temperature is obtained from a Landau-Ginzburg model, including fluctuations to gaussian level. The free energy is evaluated via a saddle point expansion around the local minima of the Landau-Ginzburg functional. The local minima are computed by solving the Euler-Lagrange equations with appropriate boundary conditions, preserving manifestly the full nonlinearity that is characteristic of skyrmion states. It is shown that the fluctuations stabilize the skyrmion lattice in a region of the phase diagram close to the critical temperature, wh…
I consider skyrmionic states in non-centrosymmetric magnets near the ordering temperatures. I show that the interaction between the chiral skyrmions, being repulsive in a broad temperature range, changes into attraction at high temperatures. This leads to a remarkable confinement effect: near the ordering temperature skyrmions exist only as bound states. The confined skyrmions as discernible units may arrange in different mesophases. The confinement of multiple skyrmions is a consequence of the coupling between the magnitude and the angular part of the order parameter. Thus, near the ordering …
We performed a systematic study of the temperature- and field-dependence of magnetization and resistivity of Gd2PdSi3, which is a centrosymmetric skyrmion crystal. While the magnetization behavior is consistent with the reported phase diagram based on susceptibility, we show that a phase diagram can also be constructed based on the anomalous magnetoresistance with one-to-one correspondence among all the features. In addition, the crossover boundary into the field-induced ferromagnetic state is also identified. Our results suggest that the ferromagnetic spin fluctuations above the Néel temperat…
We study untwisted heterobilayers of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic van der Waals materials, with in particular a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the ferromagnetic layer. A continuum low energy field theory is utilized to study such systems. We develop a phase diagram as a function of the strength of inter-layer exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, combining perturbative and strong coupling analyses with numerical simulations using Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations. Various moiré-periodic commensurate phases are found, and the commensurate-incommensurate transition is dis…
The phase diagrams of the frustrated classical spin model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction on the Shastry-Sutherland (S-S) lattice are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulation. For ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighboring (J2) interactions, the introduced exchange frustration enhances the effect of the DM interaction, which enlarges the magnetic field-range with the skyrmion lattice phase and increases the skyrmion density. For antiferromagnetic J2 interactions, the so-called 2q phase (two-sublattice skyrmion crystal) and the spin-flop phase are observed in the simulated phase diagr…
We report a comprehensive small angle neutron scattering study (SANS) of the magnetic phase diagram of the doped semiconductor Fe_{1-x}Co_{x}Si for x=0.2 and 0.25. For magnetic field parallel to the neutron beam we observe a six-fold intensity pattern under field-cooling, which identifies the A-phase of Fe_{1-x}Co_{x}Si as a skyrmion lattice. The regime of the skyrmion lattice is highly hysteretic and extents over a wide temperature range, consistent with the site disorder of the Fe and Co atoms. Our study identifies Fe_{1-x}Co_{x}Si is a second material after MnSi in which a skyrmion lattice …
The recent discovery of tunable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in layered magnetic materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy makes them promising candidates for stabilization and manipulation of skyrmions at elevated temperatures. In this article, we use Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the robustness of skyrmions in these materials against thermal fluctuations and finite-size effects. We find that in confined geometries and at finite temperatures skyrmions are present in a large part of the phase diagram. Moreover, we find that the confined geometry favors the skyrmion over t…
We study phase transitions in the two-dimensional Heisenberg model with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the Ising anisotropy ($η$), and the dipolar interaction under zero and finite magnetic fields ($H$). For three typical strengths (zero, weak, and strong) of the dipolar interaction, we present the $H$-$η$ phase diagrams by estimating order parameters for skyrmion-lattice and helical phases and in-plane magnetization by using a Monte Carlo method with an $O(N)$ algorithm. We find in the phase diagrams three types of skyrmion-lattice phases, i.e., two square lattices and a triangular la…
Magnetic skyrmions have been the focus of intense research due to their unique qualities which result from their topological protections. Previous work on Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, the only known insulating multiferroic skyrmion material, has shown that chemical substitution alters the skyrmion phase. We chemically substitute Zn, Ag, and S into powdered Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ to study the effect on the magnetic phase diagram. In both the Ag and the S substitutions, we find that the skyrmion phase is stabilized over a larger temperature range, as determined via magnetometry and small-angle neutron scattering (SA…
We study the effects of an in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction under an external magnetic field in the highly frustrated kagome antiferromagnet. We focus on the low-temperature phase diagram, which we obtain through extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. We show that, given the geometric frustration of the lattice, highly non trivial phases emerge. At low fields, lowering the temperature from a cooperative paramagnet phase, the kagome elementary plaquettes form non-coplanar arrangements with non-zero chirality, retaining a partial degeneracy. As the field increases, there is a transition fr…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial spin whirls that may not be transformed continuously into topologically trivial states such as ferromagnetic spin alignment. In recent years lattice structures composed of skyrmions have been discovered in certain bulk chiral magnets with non-centrosymmetric crystal structures. The magnetic phase diagrams of these materials share remarkable similarities despite great variations of the characteristic temperature, field, and length scales and regardless whether the underlying electronic state is that of a metal, semiconductor, or insulator.
We report simultaneous measurements of the magnetization and the ac susceptibility across the magnetic phase diagram of single-crystal MnSi. In our study we explore the importance of the excitation frequency, excitation amplitude, sample shape, and crystallographic orientation. The susceptibility, dM/dH, calculated from the magnetization, is dominated by pronounced maxima at the transition from the helical to the conical and the conical to the skyrmion lattice phase. The maxima in dM/dH are not tracked by the ac susceptibility, which in addition varies sensitively with the excitation amplitude…
We study topological defects in anisotropic ferromagnets with competing interactions near the Lifshitz point. We show that skyrmions and bi-merons are stable in a large part of the phase diagram. We calculate skyrmion-skyrmion and meron-meron interactions and show that skyrmions attract each other and form ring-shaped bound states in a zero magnetic field. At the Lifshitz point merons carrying a fractional topological charge become deconfined. These results imply that unusual topological excitations may exist in weakly frustrated magnets with conventional crystal lattices.
In the lacunar spinel GaV4S8, the interplay of spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom produces a rich phase diagram that includes an unusual Neel-type skyrmion phase composed of molecular spins. To provide insight into the interactions underlying this complex phase diagram, we study the spin excitations in GaV4S8 through inelastic neutron scattering measurements on polycrystalline and single-crystal samples. Using linear spin-wave theory, we describe the spin-wave excitations using a model where V4 clusters decorate an FCC lattice. The effective cluster model includes a ferromagnetic int…
We study the evolution of the magnetic phase diagram of Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge alloys with concentration $x$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.3$) by small-angle neutron scattering. We unambiguously observe the absence of a skyrmion lattice (or A-phase) in bulk MnGe and its onset under a small Mn/Fe substitution. The A-phase is there endowed with an exceptional skyrmion density, and is stabilized within a very large temperature region and a field range which scales with the Fe concentration. Our findings highlight the possibility to fine-tune properties of skyrmion lattices by means of chemical doping.
Magnetic skyrmions, topological spin textures observed in chiral magnets, have attracted huge interest due to their applications in the field of spintronics. In this work we study the stability of circular isolated skyrmions in ferromagnetic chiral magnets under the influence of different perturbations and external fields. To this end we develop a general systematic procedure based in a harmonic expansion series of the skyrmion boundary which allows the identifycation of the breakdown of the skyrmion circular shape on each instability channel independently. We apply our approach to a few repre…
We show that continuous and spin-lattice models of chiral ferro- and antiferromagnets provide the existence of an infinite number of stable soliton solutions of any integer topological charge. A detailed description of the morphology of new skyrmions and the corresponding energy dependencies are provided. The considered model is general, and is expected to predict a plethora of particle-like states which may occur in various chiral magnets including atomic layers, e.g., PdFe/Ir(111), rhombohedral GaV$_4$S$_8$ semiconductor, B20-type alloys as Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge, Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si, Fe$_{1-x}$C…
We construct the general free energy governing long-wavelength magnetism in two-dimensional oxide heterostructures, which applies irrespective of the microscopic mechanism for magnetism. This leads, in the relevant regime of weak but non-negligible spin-orbit coupling, to a rich phase diagram containing in-plane ferromagnetic, spiral, cone, and skyrmion lattice phases, as well as a nematic state stabilized by thermal fluctuations. The general conclusions are vetted by a microscopic derivation for a simple model with Rashba spin-orbit coupling.
Chiral magnets, such as MnSi, display a rich finite temperature phase diagram in an applied magnetic field. The most unusual of the phases encountered is the so called A-phase characterized by a triangular lattice of skyrmion tubes. Its existence cannot be captured within a mean-field treatment of a Landau-Ginzburg functional but thermal fluctuations to Gaussian order are required to stabilize it. In this note we go beyond Gaussian order in a fully non-perturbative study of a three dimensional lattice spin model using classical Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that the A-phase is indeed…
Recent developments have led to an explosion of activity on skyrmions in three-dimensional (3D) chiral magnets. Experiments have directly probed these topological spin textures, revealed their nontrivial properties, and led to suggestions for novel applications. However, in 3D the skyrmion crystal phase is observed only in a narrow region of the temperature-field phase diagram. We show here, using a general analysis based on symmetry, that skyrmions are much more readily stabilized in two-dimensional (2D) systems with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. This enhanced stability arises from the competit…
We present the phase diagram of magnetic states for films of isotropic chiral magnets calculated as function of applied magnetic field and thickness of the film. We have found a novel magnetic state driven by the natural confinement of the crystal, localized at the surface and stacked on top of the conical bulk phase. This magnetic surface state has a three-dimensional (3D) chiral spin-texture described by the superposition of helical and cycloidal spin spirals. This surface state exists for a large range of applied magnetic fields and for any film thickness beyond a critical one. We also iden…
The Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya (DM) interaction that originates from relativistic spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric magnets is a source of topological spin textures. We theoretically investigate the possibility of a skyrmion crystal by focusing on the role of the out-of-plane DM interaction that is different from the polar- and chiral-type DM interaction. By performing the simulated annealing for a spin model on a triangular lattice belonging to the $D_{3h}$ point group, we construct low-temperature magnetic phase diagrams in an applied magnetic field. As a result, we find the instability to…
We report detailed thermodynamic studies on high-quality single crystals of the centrosymmetric skyrmion-hosting intermetallic Gd2PdSi3 by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry in fields up to 15 T which are complemented by specific heat and magnetization studies. Our dilatometric measurements show magnetoelastic effects associated with antiferromagnetic order at TN1 = 22.3 K and TN2 = 19.7 K, as well as strong field effects in an applied magnetic field of 15 Tup to 200 K (150 K) for B||c (B||a*, i.e. B perp c). The data allow us to complete the magneticphase diagram, including a ne…
The orientation of Néel-type skyrmions in the lacunar spinels GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GaV$_4$Se$_8$ is tied to the polar axes of their underlying crystal structure through the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In these crystals, the skyrmion lattice phase exists for externally applied magnetic fields parallel to these axes and withstands oblique magnetic fields up to some critical angle. Here, we map out the stability of the skyrmion lattice phase in both crystals as a function of field angle and magnitude using dynamic cantilever magnetometry. The measured phase diagrams reproduce the major feature…
We model quantum Hall skyrmions in graphene monolayer at quarter filling by a theory of CP3 fields and study the energy minimizing skyrmions in presence of valley pseudospin anisotropy and Zeeman coupling. We present a diagram of all types of skyrmions in a wide range of the anisotropy parameters. For each type of skyrmion, we visualize it on three Bloch spheres, and present the profiles of its texture on the graphene honeycomb lattice, thus providing references for the STM/STS imaging of spin-pseudospin textures in graphene monolayer in quantum Hall regime. Besides the spin and pseudospin sky…
We study the dynamics of skyrmions in chiral magnets in the presence of a spin polarized current. The motion of skyrmions in the ferromagnetic background excites spin waves and contributes to additional damping. At a large current, the spin wave spectrum becomes gapless and skyrmions are created dynamically from the ferromagnetic state. At an even higher current, these skyrmions are strongly deformed due to the damping and become unstable at a threshold current, leading to a chiral liquid. We show how skyrmions can be created by increasing the current in the magnetic spiral state. We then cons…
Broadband microwave spectroscopy has been performed on single-crystalline GaV$_4$S$_8$, which exhibits a complex magnetic phase diagram including cycloidal, Néel-type skyrmion lattice, as well as field-polarized ferromagnetic phases below 13 K. At zero and small magnetic fields two collective modes are found at 5 and 15 GHz, which are characteristic of the cycloidal state in this easy-axis magnet. In finite fields, entering the skyrmion lattice phase, the spectrum transforms into a multi-mode pattern with absorption peaks near 4, 8, and 15 GHz. The spin excitation spectra in GaV$_4$S$_8$ and t…
Insulating helimagnetic Cu2OSeO3 shows sizeable magnetoelectric effects in its skyrmion phase. Using magnetization measurements, magneto-current analysis and dielectric spectroscopy, we provide a thorough investigation of magnetoelectric coupling, polarization and dielectric constants of the ordered magnetic and polar phases of single-crystalline Cu2OSeO3 in external magnetic fields up to 150 mT and at temperatures below 60 K. From these measurements we construct a detailed phase diagram. Especially, the skyrmion phase and the metamagnetic transition of helical to conical spin order are charac…
We present magnetization and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements of Néel skyrmion-host GaV$_4$S$_8$ under the application of hydrostatic pressures up to $P=2.29$ GPa. Our results suggest that the magnetic phase diagram is altered with pressure via a reduction in the crossover temperature from the cycloidal (C) to ferromagnetic-like state with increasing $P$, such that, by 2.29 GPa, the C state appears to persist down to the lowest measured temperatures. With the aid of micromagnetic simulations, we propose that the driving mechanism behind this change is a reduction in the magnetic anisotropy …
The stability of the four known stationary points of the cubic helimagnet energy functional: the ferromagnetic state, the conical helix, the conical helicoid, and the skyrmion lattice, is studied by solving the corresponding spectral problem. The only stable points are the ferromagnetic state at high magnetic field and the conical helix at low field, and there is no metastable state. Thermal fluctuations around the stationary point, included to quadratic order in the saddle point expansion, destabilize the conical helix in a region where the ferromagnetic state is unstable. Thus, a new interme…
By introducing biquadratic together with usual bilinear ferromagnetic nearest neighbor exchange interaction in a square lattice, we find that the energy of the spin-wave mode is minimized at a finite wavevector for a vanishingly small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), supporting a ground state with spin-spiral structure whose pitch length is unusually short as found in some of the experiments. Apart from reproducing the magnetic structures that can be obtained in a canonical model with nearest neighbor exchange interaction only, a numerical simulation of this model with further introduc…
Magnetic skyrmions, a topologically stable spin swirling object, have attracted a great interest due to their potential applications in future spintronics and ultra high dense magnetic memory devices. Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ is only known insulating chiral helimagnet with multiple phases including skyrmion phase. Existence of skyrmion phase as well as first and second order phase transitions make Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ a promissing candidate for investigating complex magnetic phenomena. Here, we report that both first and second order magnetic phase transitions are responsible in determining the phase diagram …
We report on the slow magnetization dynamics observed upon the magnetic phase transitions of GaV4S8, a multiferroic compound featuring a long-ranged cycloidal magnetic order and a Néel-type skyrmion lattice in a relatively broad temperature range below its Curie temperature. The fundamental difference between GaV4S8 and the chiral helimagnets, wherein the skyrmion phase was first discovered, lies within the polar symmetry of GaV4S8, promoting a cycloidal instead of a helical magnetic order and rendering the magnetic phase diagram essentially different from that in the cubic helimagnets. Our ac…
A meron is a controversial topological excitation because it carries just one half of the topological charge unit. It is believed that it is tightly binded to another meron and cannot be observed by isolating it. We present a counter example, investigating the 2-dimensional nonlinear sigma model together with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, where topological excitations are merons, bimerons and skyrmions. They behave as if they were free particles since they are electrically neutral. A prominent feature is that the topological charge density is strictly confined within compact domains. …
The frustrated classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions on the triangular lattice is studied under a magnetic field by means of semiclassical calculations and large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We show that even a small DM interaction induces the formation of an Antiferromagnetic Skyrmion crystal (AF-SkX) state. Unlike what is observed in ferromagnetic materials, we show that the AF-SkX state consists of three interpenetrating Skyrmion crystals (one by sublattice), and most importantly, the AF-SkX state seems to survive in the limit of zero te…
Finite-${\mathbf Q}$ magnetic instabilities are rather common in frustrated magnets. When the magnetic susceptibility is maximized at multiple-${\mathbf Q}$ vectors related through lattice symmetry operations, exotic magnetic orderings such as vortex and skyrmion crystals may follow. Here we show that a periodic array of nonmagnetic impurities, which can be realized through charge density wave ordering, leads to a rich phase diagram featuring a plethora of chiral magnetic phases, especially when there is a simple relation between the reciprocal vectors of the impurity superlattice and the magn…
We report a long-wavelength helimagnetic superstructure in bulk samples of the ferrimagnetic insulator Cu2OSeO3. The magnetic phase diagram associated with the helimagnetic modulation inferred from small angle neutron scattering and magnetisation measurements includes a skyrmion lattice phase and is strongly reminiscent of MnSi, FeGe and Fe1-xCoxSi, i.e., binary isostructural siblings of Cu2OSeO3 that order helimagnetically. The temperature dependence of the specific heat of Cu2OSeO3 is characteristic of nearly critical spin fluctuations at the helimagnetic transition. This provides putative e…
We report high-precision measurements of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat, C(T,H), across the magnetic phase diagram of MnSi. Clear anomalies establish the skyrmion lattice unambiguously as a thermodynamic phase. The evolution of the specific heat anomalies, the field dependence of the entropy released at the phase transitions, and the temperature versus field dependence of crossover lines provide striking evidence of a tricritical point at an internal magnetic field of 340mT and temperature of 28.5K. The existence of this tricritical point represents strong s…
We present a detailed study of the phase diagram surrounding the skyrmion lattice (SkL) phase of Cu2OSe2O3 using high-precision magnetic ac susceptibility measurements. An extensive investigation of transition dynamics around the SkL phase using the imaginary component of the susceptibility revealed that at the conical-to-SkL transition a broad dissipation region exists with a complex frequency dependence. The analysis of the observed behavior within the SkL phase indicates a distribution of relaxation times intrinsically related to SkL. At the SkL-to-paramagnet transition a narrow first-order…
The lacunar spinel GaV4S8 exhibits orbital ordering at 44 K and shows a complex magnetic phase diagram below 12.7 K, which includes ferromagnetic and cycloidal spin order. At low but finite external magnetic fields, Néel-type skyrmions are formed in this material. Skyrmions are whirl-like spin vortices that have received great theoretical interest because of their non-trivial spin topology and that are also considered as basic entities for new data-storage technologies. Interestingly, we found that the orbitally ordered phase shows sizable ferroelectric polarization and that excess spin-driven…
Skyrmions are topologically protected quantum objects at the nanometre scale. They form perpendicular to an applied magnetic field at a certain temperature and arrange themselves in a typically hexagonal lattice. Using small angle neutron scattering we have determined the magnetic field versus temperature phase diagrams of the stability range of the different magnetic phases, the helical as well as the skyrmion phases in the multiferroic skyrmion material Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Therefore, a single crystal was mounted in different crystal orientations, i.e. unoriented and with the crystallographic $\l…
The tetragonal intermetallic compound EuAl$_{4}$ hosts an exciting variety of low temperature phases. In addition to a charge density wave below 140 K, four ordered magnetic phases are observed below 15.4 K. Recently, a skyrmion phase was proposed based on Hall effect measurements under a $c$-axis magnetic field. We present a detailed investigation of the phase transitions in EuAl$_{4}$ under $c$-axis magnetic field. Our dilatometry, heat capacity, DC magnetometry, AC magnetic susceptibility, and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements reveal three magnetic phase transitions not previous…
Multi-orbital optical lattices have been attracting rapidly growing research interests in the last several years, providing fascinating opportunities for orbital-based quantum simulations. Here, we consider bosonic atoms loaded in the degenerate $p$-orbital bands of a two-dimensional triangular optical lattice. This system is described by a multi-orbital Bose-Hubbard model. We find the confined atoms in this system develop spontaneous orbital polarization, which forms a chiral Skyrmion lattice pattern in a large regime of the phase diagram. This is in contrast to its spin analogue which largel…
Cu2OSeO3 is known as a unique example of insulating multiferroic compounds with skyrmion spin texture, which is characterized by the chiral cubic crystal structure at ambient pressure. Recently, it has been reported that this compound shows pressure-induced structural transition with large enhancement of magnetic ordering temperature Tc. In the present study, we have investigated the detailed crystal structure in the high pressure phase, by combining the synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment with the diamond anvil cell and the analysis based on the genetic algorithm. Our results suggest tha…
