A continuum model of frustrated ferromagnets is analyzed in detail in the regime of low applied magnetic field, $H_0<1/4$, where the ground state is a spatially varying conical spiral. By changing variables to a corotating spin field, the model is reformulated as a gauged sigma model in a fixed background gauge, allowing the construction of stable isolated Skyrmions, and stable multi-Skyrmion clusters, which approach the conical ground state at spatial infinity. Owing to the spatial anisotropy induced by the ground state, these Skyrmions exhibit only discrete symmetries, and are of neither Néel nor Bloch type. These Skyrmions are continuously connected to the more familar solutions in the high field regime ($H_0>1/4$), acquiring axial symmetry in the limit $H_0\rightarrow 1/4$. The propagation of small amplitude spin waves through the conical ground state is also analyzed and is found to depend strongly on both $H_0$ and propagation direction relative to the ground state. In contrast to spin waves in the high field regime ($H_0>1/4$) there is no spectral gap: waves may propagate with any angular frequency.
Magnetic skyrmionium can be used as a nanometer-scale non-volatile information carrier, which shows no skyrmion Hall effect due to its special structure carrying zero topological charge. Here, we report the static and dynamic properties of an isolated nanoscale skyrmionium in a frustrated magnetic monolayer, where the skyrmionium is stabilized by competing interactions. The frustrated skyrmionium has a size of about $10$ nm, which can be further reduced by tuning perpendicular magnetic anisotropy or magnetic field. It is found that the nanoscale skyrmionium driven by the damping-like spin-orbi…
Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like topological excitations recently discovered in chiral magnets. Their small size, topological protection and the ease with which they can be manipulated by electric currents generated much interest in using skyrmions for information storage and processing. Recently, it was suggested that skyrmions with additional degrees of freedom can exist in magnetically frustrated materials. Here, we show that dynamics of skyrmions and antiskyrmions in nanostripes of frustrated magnets is strongly affected by complex spin states formed at the stripe edges. These states c…
Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like topological excitations that recently generated much interest as candidates for future spintronic devices based on skyrmion small size, enhanced topological stability, and/or mutual interaction. Here we examine the properties of isolated skyrmions in a frustrated chiral magnet with competing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and frustrated exchange interactions. We show that the skyrmion size drastically decreases even for small values of competing stabilization mechanisms. Skyrmion mutual interaction remains attracting as is inherent for frustrated skyrmions, but the …
A skyrmion in frustrated magnetic system has the helicity degree of freedom. A skyrmion string is formed in a frustrated layered system, which is well described by the $XY$ model owing to the exchange coupling between adjacent layers. We consider a system where the interlayer exchange couplings are alternating, where the dimerized $XY$ model is materialized, whose linear limit is the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We argue that it is a nonlinear topological system. We study the quench dynamics of the helicity wave under the initial condition that the helicity of the skyrmion in the bottommost lay…
We study the nucleation and collective dynamics of Shankar skyrmions [R. Shankar, Journal de Physique 38, 1405 (1977)] in the class of frustrated magnetic systems described by an SO(3) order parameter, including multi-lattice antiferromagnets and amorphous magnets. We infer the expression for the spin-transfer torque that injects skyrmion charge into the system and the Onsager-reciprocal pumping force that enables its detection by electrical means. The thermally-assisted flow of topological charge gives rise to an algebraically decaying drag signal in nonlocal transport measurements. We contra…
Multiply periodic states appear in a wide variety of physical contexts, such as the Rayleigh-Benard convection, Faraday waves, liquid crystals, domain patterns in ferromagnetic films and skyrmion crystals recently observed in chiral magnets. Here we study a simple model of an anisotropic frustrated magnet and show that its zero-temperature phase diagram contains numerous multi-q states including the skyrmion crystal. We clarify the mechanism for stabilization of these states, discuss their multiferroic properties and formulate rules for finding new skyrmion materials. In addition to skyrmion c…
We report the current-driven dynamics of frustrated skyrmions in an antiferromagnetically exchange coupled bilayer system, where the bilayer skyrmion consists of two monolayer skyrmions with opposite skyrmion numbers $Q$. We show that the in-plane current-driven bilayer skyrmion moves in a straight path, while the out-of-plane current-driven bilayer skyrmion moves in a circular path. It is found that the in-plane current-driven mobility of a bilayer skyrmion is much better than the monolayer one at a large ratio of $β/α$, where $α$ and $β$ denote the damping parameter and non-adiabatic spin tr…
We clarify the conditions for the emergence of multiple-${\bf Q}$ structures out of lattice and easy-axis spin anisotropy in frustrated magnets. By considering magnets whose exchange interaction has multiple global minima in momentum space, we find that both types of anisotropy stabilize triple-${\bf Q}$ orderings. Moderate anisotropy leads to a magnetic field-induced skyrmion crystal, which evolves into a bubble crystal for increasing spatial or spin anisotropy. The bubble crystal exhibits a quasi-continuous (devil's staircase) temperature dependent ordering wave-vector, characteristic of the…
Helicity indicates the in-plane magnetic-moment swirling direction of a skyrmionic configuration. The ability to reverse the helicity of a skyrmionic bubble via purely electrical means has been predicted in frustrated magnetic systems, however its experimental observation has remained challenging. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the current-driven helicity reversal of the skyrmionic bubble in a nanostructured frustrated Fe3Sn2 magnet. The critical current density required to trigger the helicity reversal is 109 - 1010 A/m2, with a corresponding pulse-width varying from 1 μs to 100 ns. Comp…
Skyrmions in frustrated magnets have the helicity degree of freedom, where two different configurations of Bloch-type skyrmions are energetically favored by the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and characterized by opposite helicities. A skyrmion must become a quantum-mechanical object when its radius is of the order of nanometer. We construct a qubit based on the two-fold degeneracy of the Bloch-type nanoscale skyrmions in frustrated magnets. It is shown that the universal quantum computation is possible based on nanoscale skyrmions in a multilayered system. We explicitly show how to constr…
Exploring a classical solution of the non-linear sigma model for a quantum Hall ferromagnet, a skyrmion-magnon effective hamiltonian is obtained via the collective coordinates method. Using the Feynman-Vernon functional integral formalism for this model we find the temperature dependent transport coefficients which characterize a single skyrmion dynamics.
The purpose of the research is the construction of the analytical model for description of spin-polarized current-driven ferromagnetic domain wall motion with a skyrmion building block. The dependence of velocity of ferromagnetic domain wall motion with a skyrmion building block is found as a function of driving torques and an external magnetic field strength.
The helicity-orbital coupling is an intriguing feature of magnetic skyrmions in frustrated magnets. Here, we explore the skyrmion dynamics in a frustrated magnet based on the $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$-$J_{3}$ classical Heisenberg model explicitly by including the dipole-dipole interaction. The skyrmion energy acquires a helicity dependence due to the dipole-dipole interaction, resulting in the current-induced translational motion with a fixed helicity. The lowest energy states are the degenerate Bloch-type states, which can be used for building the binary memory. By increasing the driving current, the h…
Frustrated topological spin textures have unique properties that may enable novel spintronic applications, such as helicity-based information storage and computing. Here, we report the statics and current-induced dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) pancake skyrmions in a stack of weakly coupled frustrated magnetic monolayers, which form a three-dimensional (3D) skyrmion string. The Bloch-type skyrmion string is energetically more stable than its Néel-type counterpart. It can be driven into translational motion by the dampinglike spin-orbit torque and shows the damping-dependent skyrmion Hall effe…
We develop a quantum theory of magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnet with frustrating next-nearest neighbor interactions. Using exact diagonalization we show numerically that a quantum skyrmion exists as a stable many-magnon bound state and investigate its quantum numbers. We then derive a phenomenological Schrödinger equation for the quantum skyrmion and its internal degrees of freedom. We find that quantum skyrmions have highly unusual properties. Their bandwidth is exponentially small and arises from tunneling processes between skyrmion and antiskyrmion. The b…
The skyrmions generated by frustration in centrosymmetric structures host extra internal degrees of freedom: vorticity and helicity, resulting in distinctive properties and potential functionality, which are not shared by the skyrmions stemming from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric structures. The present work indicates that the magnetism-driven electric polarization carried by skyrmions provides a direct handle for tuning helicity. Especially for the in-plane magnetized skyrmions, the helicity can be continuously rotated and exactly picked by applying an external el…
We find numerically skyrmionic textures with skyrmion number Q=0 in ferromagnets with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and perpendicular anisotropy. These have the form of a skyrmion-antiskyrmion pair and may be called chiral droplets. They are stable in an infinite film as well as in disc-shaped magnetic elements. Droplets are found for values of the parameters close to the transition from the ferromagnetic to the spiral phase. We study their motion under spin-transfer torque. They move in the direction of the spin flow and, thus, their dynamics are drastically different than the Hall dy…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological magnetization textures that are characterized by the homotopy group of two dimensional spheres. Despite years of intensive research on skyrmions, the fundamental problem of the inertia of a skyrmion in driven motion remains unresolved. By properly taking into account a direct coupling between skyrmion motion and the correspondingly excited magnons, we identify a dynamical mass for the skyrmion in motion. The direct coupling between skyrmion motion and magnons can be employed to engineer skyrmion dynamics with magnons through ingenious material and geometry de…
The two-dimensional quantum ferromagnet filled with a liquid of skyrmions is studied theoretically in the context of the quantum Hall effect near electronic filling factor $ν= 1$. A cross-over between the classical ferromagnetic phase at $ν=1$ and a classical paramagnetic phase at $ν\neq 1$ is obtained, which is consistent with recent Knight-shift measurements. A new collective mode associated with the skyrmion liquid that is of the cyclotron type is also identified.
We theoretically reveal that pure eigenmodes of an isolated magnetic skyrmion embedded in a ferromagnetic environment can be selectively activated using microwave electric fields without exciting gigantic ferromagnetic resonances, in contrast to conventional methods using microwave magnetic fields. We also demonstrate that this selective activation of a skyrmion can efficiently drive its translational motion in a ferromagnetic nanotrack under application of an external magnetic field inclined from the normal direction. We find that a mode with combined breathing and rotational oscillations ind…
Frustrated magnets are known to support two-dimensional topological solitons, called skyrmions. A continuum model for frustrated magnets has recently been shown to support both two-dimensional skyrmions and three-dimensional knotted solitons (hopfions). In this note we derive lower bounds for the energies of these solitons expressed in terms of their topological invariants. The bounds are linear in the degree in the case of skyrmions and scale as the Hopf degree to the power 3/4 in the case of hopfions.
The dynamics of magnetic skyrmion driven by spin-polarized current is theoretically studied in the chiral ferromagnetic film with spatially modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Three cases including linear, sinusoidal, and periodic rectangular modulations have been considered, where the increase, decrease, and the periodic modification of the size and velocity of the skyrmion have been observed in the microscopic simulations. These phenomena are well explained by the Thiele equation, where an effective force on the skyrmion is induced by the inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interact…
We propose an improved composite-boson theory of quantum Hall ferromagnets, where the field operator describes solely the physical degrees of freedom representing the deviation from the ground state. In this scheme skyrmions appear merely as generic excitations confined in the lowest Landau level. We evaluate the excitation energy of one skyrmion. Our theoretical estimation accounts for the activation-energy data due to Schmeller et al. remarkably well.
We revisit a theory of skyrmion transport in ferromagnets. On a basis of an effective U(1) gauge theory for spin-chirality fluctuations in double-exchange ferromagnets, we derive an expression for the velocity of a skyrmion core driven by the dc electric field. We find that mutual feedback effects between conduction electrons and localized spins give rise to Chern-Simons terms, suggesting a dissipationless mechanism for the skyrmion Hall current. A conventional description of the current-induced skyrmion motion, appearing through the spin transfer torque and scattering events, is reproduced in…
Time dependence of the size and chirality of a ferromagnetic skyrmion in a Heisenberg model with the magnetic field on a square lattice has been studied analytically and numerically. The lattice and the magnetic field generate strong time dependence of the skyrmion chirality. Due to nonlinearity, the lattice alone also generates strong intrinsic damping that leads to the skyrmion collapse via the emission of spin waves. In the absence of the magnetic field the collapse is slow for a large skyrmion but it becomes exponentially fast in the presence of the Landau-Lifshitz damping when the field i…
A magnetic Skyrmion is a stable two-dimensional nanoparticle describing a localized winding of the magnetization in certain magnetic materials. Skyrmions are the subject of intense experimental and theoretical investigation and have potential technological spintronic applications. Here we show that numerical computations of frustrated magnets predict that Skyrmions can be tied into knots to form new stable three-dimensional nanoparticles. These stable equilibria of twisted loops of Skyrmion strings have an integer-valued topological charge, known as the Hopf charge, that counts the number of p…
Manipulation of three-dimensional (3D) topological objects is of both fundamental interest and practical importance in many branches of physics. Here, we show by spin dynamics simulations that the bifurcation of a 3D skyrmion string in a layered frustrated system could be induced by the dampinglike spin-orbit torque. The bifurcation of a skyrmion string happens when the skyrmion string carries a minimal topological charge of $Q=2$. We demonstrate that three types of bifurcations could be realized by applying different current injection geometries, which lead to the transformation from I-shaped…
We present a theoretical investigation of magnetostatic interaction effects in geometrically frustrated arrays of anisotropic multilayer ferromagnetic nanoparticles arranged in different spatially configured systems with triangular symmetry. We show that the interlayer magnetostatic interaction significantly expands the opportunities to create magnetically frustrated systems. The effects of the magnetostatic interaction in magnetization reversal processes and the possibility to control the ferromagnetic resonance spectrum in such systems are discussed.
We investigate the existence and stability of skyrmions in a frustrated chiral ferromagnet by considering the competition between ferromagnetic (FM) nearest-neighbour (NN) interaction ($J_1$) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) next-nearest-neighbour (NNN) interaction ($J_2$). Contrary to the general wisdom that long-range ferromagnetic order is not energy preferable under frustration, the skyrmion lattice not only exists but is even stable for a large field range when $J_2 \leq J_1$ compared with frustration-free systems. We defend that the enlargement of stability window of skyrmions is a consequenc…
We study annihilation mechanisms of small first- and second-order skyrmions and antiskyrmions on the frustrated $J_1-J_2-J_3$ square lattice with broken inversion symmetry (DMI). We find that annihilation happens via the injection of the opposite topological charge in the form of meron or antimeron nucleation. Overall, the exchange frustration generates a complex energy landscape with not only many (meta)stable and unstable local energy solutions, but also many possible paths connecting them. Whenever possible, we compute the activation energy and attempt frequency for the annihilation of isol…
The coupling between angular (twisting) and longitudinal modulations arising near the ordering temperature of noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets strongly influences the structure of skyrmion states and their evolution in an applied magnetic field. In the precursor states of cubic helimagnets, a continuous transformation of skyrmion lattices into the saturated state is replaced by the first-order processes accompanied by the formation of multidomain states. Recently the effects imposed by dominant longitudinal modulations have been reported in bulk MnSi and FeGe. Similar phenomena can be observed …
We introduce a new class of isolated magnetic skyrmions emerging within tilted ferromagnetic phases of polar magnets with easy-plane anisotropy. The asymmetric magnetic structure of these skyrmions is associated with an intricate pattern of the energy density, which exhibits positive and negative asymptotics with respect to the surrounding state with a ferromagnetic moment tilted away from the polar axis. Correspondingly, the skyrmion-skyrmion interaction has an anisotropic character and can be either attractive or repulsive depending on the relative orientation of the skyrmion pair. We invest…
Magnetic skyrmions are whirls in the magnetization whose topological winding number promises stability against thermal fluctuations and defects. They can only decay via singular spin configurations. We analyze the corresponding energy barriers of skyrmions in a magnetic monolayer for two distinct stabilization mechanisms, i.e., Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and competing interactions. Based on our numerically calculated collapse paths on an atomic lattice, we derive analytic expressions for the saddle point textures and energy barriers of large skyrmions. The sign of the spin stiffne…
We present a Hartree-Fock study that incorporates the effects of Landau level mixing and screening due to filled levels into the computation of energies and states of quasiparticles in quantum Hall ferromagnets. We use it to construct a phase diagram for skyrmion stability as a function of magnetic field and Zeeman coupling strengths. We find that Landau level mixing tends to favor spin-polarized quasiparticles, while finite thickness corrections favor skyrmions. Our studies show that skyrmion stability in high Landau levels is very sensitive to the way in which electron-electron interactions …
We report on a study of the classical field theory description of charged skyrmions in quantum Hall ferromagnets. The appropriate field theory is a non-linear $σ$ model generalized to include Coulomb and Zeeman interaction terms. We have tested the range of validity of the classical field theory by comparing with microscopic descriptions of the single skyrmion state based on the Hartree-Fock approximation, exact diagonalization calculations, and many-body trial wavefunctions. We find that the field theory description is accurate for skyrmions with moderate spin quantum numbers ($\gtrsim 10$) a…
A skyrmion can be stabilized in a nanodisc geometry in a ferromagnetic material with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We apply spin torque uniform in space and time and observe numerically that the skyrmion is set in steady rotational motion around a point off the nanodisc center. We give a theoretical description of the emerging auto-oscillation dynamics based on the coupling of the rotational motion to the breathing mode of the skyrmion and to the associated oscillations of the in-plane magnetization. The analysis shows that the achievement of auto-oscillations in this simple set-up i…
We present a Hartree-Fock study of the competition between disorder and interactions in quantum Hall ferromagnets near $ν=1$. We find that the ground state at $ν=1$ evolves with increasing interaction strength from a quasi-metallic paramagnet, to a partially spin-polarized ferromagnetic Anderson insulator, and to a fully spin-polarized ferromagnet with a charge gap. Away from $ν=1$, the ground state evolves from a conventional Anderson insulator, to a conventional quasiparticle glass, and finally to a ferromagnetic Skyrmion quasiparticle glass. These different regimes can be measured in low-te…
An improved composite-boson theory of quantum Hall ferromagnets is proposed. It is tightly related with the microscopic wave-function theory. The characteristic feature is that the field operator describes solely the physical degrees of freedom representing the deviation from the ground state. It presents a powerful tool to analyze excited states within the \LLLd. Excitations include a Goldstone mode and nonlocal topological solitons. Solitons are vortices and Skyrmions carrying the U(1) and SU(2) topological charges, respectively. Their classical configurations are derived from their microsco…
Frustration introduces a nontrivial dispersion relation of spinwave even in a ferromagnetic phase in a spin system. We study the reflection and refraction process of spinwaves in the ferromagnet/frustrated ferromagnet junction system by using the Holstein-Primakoff spinwave expansion and taking the large-S limit. We discuss the relation between the incident angle and refraction angle of spinwave, namely, the Snell's low of spinwave. As concrete examples of frustrated ferromagnets, we study the fully polarized ferromagnet phases in the J1-J2 chains and the J1-J2 model on the square lattice. The…
We study the dynamics of skyrmions in Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya materials with easy-axis anisotropy. An important link between topology and dynamics is established through the construction of unambiguous conservation laws obtained earlier in connection with magnetic bubbles and vortices. In particular, we study the motion of a topological skyrmion with skyrmion number $Q=1$ and a non-topological skyrmionium with $Q=0$ under the influence of an external field gradient. The $Q=1$ skyrmion undergoes Hall motion perpendicular to the direction of the field gradient with a drift velocity proportional to…
Graphene exhibits quantum Hall ferromagnetism in which an approximate SU(4) symmetry involving spin and valley degrees of freedom is spontaneously broken. We construct a set of integer and fractional quantum Hall states that break the SU(4) spin/valley symmetry, and study their neutral and charged excitations. Several properties of these ferromagnets can be evaluated analytically in the SU(4) symmetric limit, including the full collective mode spectrum at integer fillings. By constructing explicit wave functions we show that the lowest energy skyrmion states carry charge $\pm 1$ for {\em any} …
We study the dynamics of skyrmions under spin-transfer torque in Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya materials with easy-axis anisotropy. In particular, we study the motion of a topological skyrmion with skyrmion number $Q=1$ and a non-topological skyrmionium with $Q=0$ using their linear momentum, virial relations, and numerical simulations. The non-topological $Q=0$ skyrmionium is accelerated in the direction of the current flow and it either reaches a steady state with constant velocity, or it is elongated to infinity. The steady-state velocity is given by a balance between current and dissipation and ha…
We report on a study of the charged-skyrmion or spin-texture excitations which occur in quantum Hall ferromagnets near odd Landau level filling factors. Particle-hole symmetry is used to relate the spin-quantum numbers of charged particle and hole excitations and neutral particle-hole pair excitations. Hartree-Fock theory is used to provide quantitative estimates of the energies of these excitations and their dependence on Zeeman coupling strength, Landau level quantum numbers, and the thicknesses of the two-dimensional electron layers. For the case of $ν$ near three we suggest the possibility…
Recent experiments have established a qualitative difference between the magnetization temperature-dependences $M(T)$ of quantum Hall ferromagnets at integer and fractional filling factors. We explain this difference in terms of the relative energies of collective magnon and particle-hole excitations in the two cases. Analytic calculations for hard-core model systems are used to demonstrate that, in the fractional case, interactions suppress the magnetization at finite temperatures and that particle-hole excitations rather than long-wavelength magnons control $M(T)$ at low $T$.
Recent work [1,2] suggests that ferromagnetic reversal with spin transfer torque (STT) requires more current in a system in the presence of DMI than switching a typical ferromagnet of the same dimensions and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). However, DMI promotes stabilization of skyrmions and we report that when the perpendicular anisotropy is modulated (reduced) for both the skyrmion and ferromagnet, it takes much smaller current to reverse the fixed skyrmion than to reverse the ferromagnet in the same time, or the skyrmion reverses much faster than the ferromagnet at similar levels o…
We report the application of the nonlinear $σ$ model to study the multi-skyrmion problem in the quantum Hall ferromagnet system. We show that the ground state of the system can be described by a ferromagnet triangular Skyrme lattice near $ν=1$ where skyrmions are extremely dilute. We find a transition into antiferromagnet square lattice by increasing the skyrmion density and therefore $|ν-1|$. We investigate the possibility that the square Skyrme lattice deforms to a single skyrmion with the same topological charge when the Zeeman energy is extremely smaller than the Coulomb energy. We explici…
The low energy charged excitations in quantum Hall ferromagnets are topological defects in the spin orientation known as skyrmions. Recent experimental studies on nuclear magnetic resonance spectral line shapes in quantum well heterostructures show a transition from a motionally narrowed to a broader `frozen' line shape as the temperature is lowered at fixed filling factor. We present a skyrmion diffusion model that describes the experimental observations qualitatively and shows a time scale of $\sim 50 μ{\rm sec}$ for the transport relaxation time of the skyrmions. The transition is character…
Exotic spin textures viz. chiral domain wall, vortices, skyrmion, skyrmionium, etc. have recently emerged as active field of research because of their potential applications in high density data storage technology and logic gate computing. Magnetic skyrmionium is a skyrmion like soliton, which carries zero topological quantum number. Skyrmioniums are superior to conventional skyrmions in ferromagnets due to their negligible skyrmion hall effect and higher velocity. The physical properties of both skyrmion and skyrmionium have been investigated rigorously in ferromagnetic systems. Recent observ…
Magnetic skyrmions are quasiparticle configurations in a magnetic film that can act as information carrying bits for ultrasmall, all-electronic nonvolatile memory. The skyrmions can be nucleated and driven by spin-orbit torque from a current driven in a heavy metal underlayer. Along its gyrotropic path, a Magnus force can cause a skyrmion to be annihilated at the boundaries. By combining interfacial and bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs), for instance by using a B20 material on top of a heavy metal layer with high spin-orbit coupling, it is possible to engineer a hybrid skyrmion th…
Effective interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and skyrmion stabilization in ferromagnet/paramagnet and ferromagnet/superconductor hybrid systems
We show how a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can be generated in an ultrathin metal film from the induced internal electric field created by an ultrashort electromagnetic pulse. This interaction does not require structural inversion-symmetry breaking, and its amplitude can be tuned depending on the amplitude of the field. We perform first-principles calculations to estimate the strength of the field-induced magnetoelectric coupling for ferromagnetic Fe, Co, and Ni, and antiferromagnetic Mn, as well as FePt alloys. Last, using atomistic simulations, we demonstrate how an isolated antiferroma…
The understanding of the dynamical properties of skyrmion is a fundamental aspect for the realization of a competitive skyrmion based technology beyond CMOS. Most of the theoretical approaches are based on the approximation of a rigid skyrmion. However, thermal fluctuations can drive a continuous change of the skyrmion size via the excitation of thermal modes. Here, by taking advantage of the Hilbert-Huang transform, we demonstrate that at least two thermal modes can be excited which are non-stationary in time. In addition, one limit of the rigid skyrmion approximation is that this hypothesis …
We study the emergence and dynamics of in-plane skyrmions in collinear ferromagnetic heterostructures. We present a minimal energy model for this class of magnetic textures, determine the crystal symmetries compatible with it and propose material candidates, based on symmetries only, for the observation of these topological solitons. We calculate exact solutions of the energy model for in-plane skyrmions in the absence of dipolar interactions at critical coupling, the latter defined by the relations $H = K$ and $D = \sqrt{AK}$ for the strength of the external magnetic field and the Dzyaloshins…
We report the discovery of attractive magnetic skyrmions and their clusters in non-centrosymmetric ferromagnets. These three-dimensional solitons have been predicted to exist in the cone phase of chiral ferromagnets (J. Phys: Condens. Matter 28 (2016) 35LT01) and are fundamentally different from the more common repulsive axisymmetric skyrmions that occur in the magnetically saturated state. We present real-space images of these skyrmion clusters in thin (~70 nm) single-crystal samples of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ taken using transmission electron microscopy and develop a phenomenological theory describin…
