Skyrmions in frustrated magnets have the helicity degree of freedom, where two different configurations of Bloch-type skyrmions are energetically favored by the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and characterized by opposite helicities. A skyrmion must become a quantum-mechanical object when its radius is of the order of nanometer. We construct a qubit based on the two-fold degeneracy of the Bloch-type nanoscale skyrmions in frustrated magnets. It is shown that the universal quantum computation is possible based on nanoscale skyrmions in a multilayered system. We explicitly show how to construct the $π/4$ phase-shift gate, the Hadamard gate, and the CNOT gate. The one-qubit quantum gates are materialized by temporally controlling the electric field and the spin current. The two-qubit gate is materialized with the use of the Ising-type exchange coupling by controlling the distance between the skyrmion centers in two adjacent layers. The merit of the present mechanism is that an external magnetic field is not necessary. Our results may open a possible way toward universal quantum computations based on nanoscale topological spin textures.
Magnetic skyrmionium can be used as a nanometer-scale non-volatile information carrier, which shows no skyrmion Hall effect due to its special structure carrying zero topological charge. Here, we report the static and dynamic properties of an isolated nanoscale skyrmionium in a frustrated magnetic monolayer, where the skyrmionium is stabilized by competing interactions. The frustrated skyrmionium has a size of about $10$ nm, which can be further reduced by tuning perpendicular magnetic anisotropy or magnetic field. It is found that the nanoscale skyrmionium driven by the damping-like spin-orbi…
Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like topological excitations recently discovered in chiral magnets. Their small size, topological protection and the ease with which they can be manipulated by electric currents generated much interest in using skyrmions for information storage and processing. Recently, it was suggested that skyrmions with additional degrees of freedom can exist in magnetically frustrated materials. Here, we show that dynamics of skyrmions and antiskyrmions in nanostripes of frustrated magnets is strongly affected by complex spin states formed at the stripe edges. These states c…
We derive the quantization of magnetic helicity in the solid-state and demonstrate tunable macroscopic quantum tunneling, coherence, and oscillation for a skyrmion spin texture stabilized in frustrated magnets. We also discuss the parameter space for the experimental realization of quantum effects. Typically, for a skyrmion of 5 nm radius, quantum tunneling between two macroscopic states with distinct helicities occurs with an inverse escape rate within seconds below 100 mK, and an energy splitting in the MHz regime. Feasibility of quantum tunneling of an ensemble of magnetic spins inspires ne…
Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like topological excitations that recently generated much interest as candidates for future spintronic devices based on skyrmion small size, enhanced topological stability, and/or mutual interaction. Here we examine the properties of isolated skyrmions in a frustrated chiral magnet with competing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and frustrated exchange interactions. We show that the skyrmion size drastically decreases even for small values of competing stabilization mechanisms. Skyrmion mutual interaction remains attracting as is inherent for frustrated skyrmions, but the …
Single magnetic skyrmion dynamics in chiral magnets with a spatially inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is considered. Based on the relation between DMI coupling and skyrmion helicity, it is argued that the latter must be included as an extra degree of freedom in the dynamics of skyrmions. An effective description of the skyrmion dynamics for an arbitrary inhomogeneous DMI coupling is obtained through the collective coordinates method. The resulting generalized Thiele's equation is a dynamical system for the center of mass position and helicity of the skyrmion. It is found t…
A skyrmion in frustrated magnetic system has the helicity degree of freedom. A skyrmion string is formed in a frustrated layered system, which is well described by the $XY$ model owing to the exchange coupling between adjacent layers. We consider a system where the interlayer exchange couplings are alternating, where the dimerized $XY$ model is materialized, whose linear limit is the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We argue that it is a nonlinear topological system. We study the quench dynamics of the helicity wave under the initial condition that the helicity of the skyrmion in the bottommost lay…
Multiply periodic states appear in a wide variety of physical contexts, such as the Rayleigh-Benard convection, Faraday waves, liquid crystals, domain patterns in ferromagnetic films and skyrmion crystals recently observed in chiral magnets. Here we study a simple model of an anisotropic frustrated magnet and show that its zero-temperature phase diagram contains numerous multi-q states including the skyrmion crystal. We clarify the mechanism for stabilization of these states, discuss their multiferroic properties and formulate rules for finding new skyrmion materials. In addition to skyrmion c…
We study the nucleation and collective dynamics of Shankar skyrmions [R. Shankar, Journal de Physique 38, 1405 (1977)] in the class of frustrated magnetic systems described by an SO(3) order parameter, including multi-lattice antiferromagnets and amorphous magnets. We infer the expression for the spin-transfer torque that injects skyrmion charge into the system and the Onsager-reciprocal pumping force that enables its detection by electrical means. The thermally-assisted flow of topological charge gives rise to an algebraically decaying drag signal in nonlocal transport measurements. We contra…
We report the current-driven dynamics of frustrated skyrmions in an antiferromagnetically exchange coupled bilayer system, where the bilayer skyrmion consists of two monolayer skyrmions with opposite skyrmion numbers $Q$. We show that the in-plane current-driven bilayer skyrmion moves in a straight path, while the out-of-plane current-driven bilayer skyrmion moves in a circular path. It is found that the in-plane current-driven mobility of a bilayer skyrmion is much better than the monolayer one at a large ratio of $β/α$, where $α$ and $β$ denote the damping parameter and non-adiabatic spin tr…
The skyrmions generated by frustration in centrosymmetric structures host extra internal degrees of freedom: vorticity and helicity, resulting in distinctive properties and potential functionality, which are not shared by the skyrmions stemming from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric structures. The present work indicates that the magnetism-driven electric polarization carried by skyrmions provides a direct handle for tuning helicity. Especially for the in-plane magnetized skyrmions, the helicity can be continuously rotated and exactly picked by applying an external el…
Helicity indicates the in-plane magnetic-moment swirling direction of a skyrmionic configuration. The ability to reverse the helicity of a skyrmionic bubble via purely electrical means has been predicted in frustrated magnetic systems, however its experimental observation has remained challenging. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the current-driven helicity reversal of the skyrmionic bubble in a nanostructured frustrated Fe3Sn2 magnet. The critical current density required to trigger the helicity reversal is 109 - 1010 A/m2, with a corresponding pulse-width varying from 1 μs to 100 ns. Comp…
The helicity-orbital coupling is an intriguing feature of magnetic skyrmions in frustrated magnets. Here, we explore the skyrmion dynamics in a frustrated magnet based on the $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$-$J_{3}$ classical Heisenberg model explicitly by including the dipole-dipole interaction. The skyrmion energy acquires a helicity dependence due to the dipole-dipole interaction, resulting in the current-induced translational motion with a fixed helicity. The lowest energy states are the degenerate Bloch-type states, which can be used for building the binary memory. By increasing the driving current, the h…
Frustrated topological spin textures have unique properties that may enable novel spintronic applications, such as helicity-based information storage and computing. Here, we report the statics and current-induced dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) pancake skyrmions in a stack of weakly coupled frustrated magnetic monolayers, which form a three-dimensional (3D) skyrmion string. The Bloch-type skyrmion string is energetically more stable than its Néel-type counterpart. It can be driven into translational motion by the dampinglike spin-orbit torque and shows the damping-dependent skyrmion Hall effe…
We clarify the conditions for the emergence of multiple-${\bf Q}$ structures out of lattice and easy-axis spin anisotropy in frustrated magnets. By considering magnets whose exchange interaction has multiple global minima in momentum space, we find that both types of anisotropy stabilize triple-${\bf Q}$ orderings. Moderate anisotropy leads to a magnetic field-induced skyrmion crystal, which evolves into a bubble crystal for increasing spatial or spin anisotropy. The bubble crystal exhibits a quasi-continuous (devil's staircase) temperature dependent ordering wave-vector, characteristic of the…
We develop a quantum theory of magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnet with frustrating next-nearest neighbor interactions. Using exact diagonalization we show numerically that a quantum skyrmion exists as a stable many-magnon bound state and investigate its quantum numbers. We then derive a phenomenological Schrödinger equation for the quantum skyrmion and its internal degrees of freedom. We find that quantum skyrmions have highly unusual properties. Their bandwidth is exponentially small and arises from tunneling processes between skyrmion and antiskyrmion. The b…
A continuum model of frustrated ferromagnets is analyzed in detail in the regime of low applied magnetic field, $H_0<1/4$, where the ground state is a spatially varying conical spiral. By changing variables to a corotating spin field, the model is reformulated as a gauged sigma model in a fixed background gauge, allowing the construction of stable isolated Skyrmions, and stable multi-Skyrmion clusters, which approach the conical ground state at spatial infinity. Owing to the spatial anisotropy induced by the ground state, these Skyrmions exhibit only discrete symmetries, and are of neither Née…
A magnetic Skyrmion is a stable two-dimensional nanoparticle describing a localized winding of the magnetization in certain magnetic materials. Skyrmions are the subject of intense experimental and theoretical investigation and have potential technological spintronic applications. Here we show that numerical computations of frustrated magnets predict that Skyrmions can be tied into knots to form new stable three-dimensional nanoparticles. These stable equilibria of twisted loops of Skyrmion strings have an integer-valued topological charge, known as the Hopf charge, that counts the number of p…
Frustrated magnets are known to support two-dimensional topological solitons, called skyrmions. A continuum model for frustrated magnets has recently been shown to support both two-dimensional skyrmions and three-dimensional knotted solitons (hopfions). In this note we derive lower bounds for the energies of these solitons expressed in terms of their topological invariants. The bounds are linear in the degree in the case of skyrmions and scale as the Hopf degree to the power 3/4 in the case of hopfions.

We investigate the existence and stability of skyrmions in a frustrated chiral ferromagnet by considering the competition between ferromagnetic (FM) nearest-neighbour (NN) interaction ($J_1$) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) next-nearest-neighbour (NNN) interaction ($J_2$). Contrary to the general wisdom that long-range ferromagnetic order is not energy preferable under frustration, the skyrmion lattice not only exists but is even stable for a large field range when $J_2 \leq J_1$ compared with frustration-free systems. We defend that the enlargement of stability window of skyrmions is a consequenc…
We study annihilation mechanisms of small first- and second-order skyrmions and antiskyrmions on the frustrated $J_1-J_2-J_3$ square lattice with broken inversion symmetry (DMI). We find that annihilation happens via the injection of the opposite topological charge in the form of meron or antimeron nucleation. Overall, the exchange frustration generates a complex energy landscape with not only many (meta)stable and unstable local energy solutions, but also many possible paths connecting them. Whenever possible, we compute the activation energy and attempt frequency for the annihilation of isol…
Magnetic skyrmions are whirls in the magnetization whose topological winding number promises stability against thermal fluctuations and defects. They can only decay via singular spin configurations. We analyze the corresponding energy barriers of skyrmions in a magnetic monolayer for two distinct stabilization mechanisms, i.e., Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and competing interactions. Based on our numerically calculated collapse paths on an atomic lattice, we derive analytic expressions for the saddle point textures and energy barriers of large skyrmions. The sign of the spin stiffne…
We determined the parameters of a classical spin Hamiltonian describing an Fe monolayer on Pd(111) surface with a Pt_{1-x}Ir_{x} alloy overlayer from ab initio calculations. While the ground state of the system is ferromagnetic for x=0.00, it becomes a spin spiral state as Ir is intermixed into the overlayer. Although the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction is present in the system, we will demonstrate that the frustrated isotropic exchange interactions play a prominent role in creating the spin spiral state, and these frustrated couplings lead to an attractive interaction between skyrmions at sh…
We introduce a new class of primitive building blocks for realizing quantum logic elements based on nanoscale magnetization textures called skyrmions. In a skyrmion qubit, information is stored in the quantum degree of helicity, and the logical states can be adjusted by electric and magnetic fields, offering a rich operation regime with high anharmonicity. By exploring a large parameter space, we propose two skyrmion qubit variants depending on their quantized state. We discuss appropriate microwave pulses required to generate single-qubit gates for quantum computing, and skyrmion multiqubit s…
A magnetic bimeron is a pair of two merons and can be understood as the in-plane magnetized version of a skyrmion. Here we theoretically predict the existence of single magnetic bimerons as well as bimeron crystals, and compare the emergent electrodynamics of bimerons with their skyrmion analogues. We show that bimeron crystals can be stabilized in frustrated magnets and analyze what crystal structure can stabilize bimerons or bimeron crystals via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We point out that bimeron crystals, in contrast to skyrmion crystals, allow for the detection of a pure topol…
Skyrmions are nanoscale spin configurations with topological properties that hold great promise for spintronic devices. Here, we establish their Néel texture, helicity, and size in Ir/Fe/Co/Pt multilayer films by constructing a multipole expansion to model their stray field signatures and applying it to magnetic force microscopy (MFM) images. Furthermore, the demonstrated sensitivity to inhomogeneity in skyrmion properties, coupled with a unique capability to estimate the pinning force governing dynamics, portends broad applicability in the burgeoning field of topological spin textures.
Skyrmions, topologically protected vortex-like nanometric spin textures in magnets, have been attracting increasing attention for emergent electromagnetic responses and possible technological applications for spintronics. In particular, metallic magnets with chiral and cubic/tetragonal crystal structure may have high potential to host skyrmions that can be driven by low electrical current excitation. However, experimental observations of skyrmions have so far been limited to below room temperature for the metallic chiral magnets, specifically for the MnSi-type B20 compounds. Toward technologic…

We show a topological spin texture called "bimeronium" in magnets with in-plane magnetization. It is a topological counterpart of skyrmionium in perpendicularly magnetized magnets and can be seen as a combination of two bimerons with opposite topological charges. We report the static structure and spin-orbit-torque-induced dynamics of an isolated bimeronium in a magnetic monolayer with frustrated exchange interactions. We study the anisotropy and magnetic field dependences of a static bimeronium. We also explore the bimeronium dynamics driven by the damping-like spin-orbit torque. We find that…
The discovery of magnetic skyrmion bubbles in centrosymmetric magnets has been receiving increasing interest from the research community, due to the fascinating physics of topological spin textures and its possible applications to spintronics. However, key challenges remain, such as how to manipulate the nucleation of skyrmion bubbles to exclude the trivial bubbles or metastable skyrmion bubbles that usually coexist with skyrmion bubbles in the centrosymmetric magnets. Here, we report having successfully performed this task by applying spatially geometric confinement to a centrosymmetric frust…
Magnetic frustrated systems have resurged in spintronics as optimal candidates for hosting three dimensional topological solitons, such as Shankar skyrmions and 4$π$-vortices, and other singular topological defects. These topological excitations are encoded in the order-parameter connected to the spin-spin correlation of the system. The key challenge for their experimental discovery is the lack of probes to observe them. We demonstrate here that spin-transfer torque and topological Hall effect measurements can serve as probes of magnetic disclinations and solitons in these systems, by means of…
Magnetic skyrmions have attracted considerable attention recently for their huge potential in spintronic applications. Generally skyrmions are big compared to the atomic lattice constant, which allows for the Ginzburg-Landau type description in the continuum limit. Such a description successfully captures the main experimental observations on skyrmions in B20 compound without inversion symmetry. Skyrmions can also exist in inversion-symmetric magnets with competing interactions. Here we derive a general Ginzburg-Landau theory for skyrmions in these magnets valid in the long wavelength limit. In this review, I outline some principal theoretical knowledge on the properties of frustrated systems and thin films. The two points I would like to emphasize: i) the physics in low dimensions where exact solutions can be obtained, ii) the physics at phase boundaries where spectacular phenomena can occur due to competing interactions of the two phases around the boundary. This competition causes a frustration. I will concentrate my attention to thin films and phenomena occurring near the boundary of two phases of different symmetries. The case of two-dimensional (2D) systems is in fact the li…
