We develop a quantum theory of magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnet with frustrating next-nearest neighbor interactions. Using exact diagonalization we show numerically that a quantum skyrmion exists as a stable many-magnon bound state and investigate its quantum numbers. We then derive a phenomenological Schrödinger equation for the quantum skyrmion and its internal degrees of freedom. We find that quantum skyrmions have highly unusual properties. Their bandwidth is exponentially small and arises from tunneling processes between skyrmion and antiskyrmion. The bandstructure changes both qualitatively and quantitatively when a single spin is added or removed from the quantum skyrmion, reflecting a locking of angular momentum and spin quantum numbers characteristic for skyrmions. Additionally, while for weak forces the quantum skyrmion is accelerated parallel to the force, it moves in a perpendicular direction for stronger fields.
Multiply periodic states appear in a wide variety of physical contexts, such as the Rayleigh-Benard convection, Faraday waves, liquid crystals, domain patterns in ferromagnetic films and skyrmion crystals recently observed in chiral magnets. Here we study a simple model of an anisotropic frustrated magnet and show that its zero-temperature phase diagram contains numerous multi-q states including the skyrmion crystal. We clarify the mechanism for stabilization of these states, discuss their multiferroic properties and formulate rules for finding new skyrmion materials. In addition to skyrmion c…
We clarify the conditions for the emergence of multiple-${\bf Q}$ structures out of lattice and easy-axis spin anisotropy in frustrated magnets. By considering magnets whose exchange interaction has multiple global minima in momentum space, we find that both types of anisotropy stabilize triple-${\bf Q}$ orderings. Moderate anisotropy leads to a magnetic field-induced skyrmion crystal, which evolves into a bubble crystal for increasing spatial or spin anisotropy. The bubble crystal exhibits a quasi-continuous (devil's staircase) temperature dependent ordering wave-vector, characteristic of the…
The helicity-orbital coupling is an intriguing feature of magnetic skyrmions in frustrated magnets. Here, we explore the skyrmion dynamics in a frustrated magnet based on the $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$-$J_{3}$ classical Heisenberg model explicitly by including the dipole-dipole interaction. The skyrmion energy acquires a helicity dependence due to the dipole-dipole interaction, resulting in the current-induced translational motion with a fixed helicity. The lowest energy states are the degenerate Bloch-type states, which can be used for building the binary memory. By increasing the driving current, the h…
Magnetic skyrmions are whirls in the magnetization whose topological winding number promises stability against thermal fluctuations and defects. They can only decay via singular spin configurations. We analyze the corresponding energy barriers of skyrmions in a magnetic monolayer for two distinct stabilization mechanisms, i.e., Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and competing interactions. Based on our numerically calculated collapse paths on an atomic lattice, we derive analytic expressions for the saddle point textures and energy barriers of large skyrmions. The sign of the spin stiffne…
The skyrmions generated by frustration in centrosymmetric structures host extra internal degrees of freedom: vorticity and helicity, resulting in distinctive properties and potential functionality, which are not shared by the skyrmions stemming from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric structures. The present work indicates that the magnetism-driven electric polarization carried by skyrmions provides a direct handle for tuning helicity. Especially for the in-plane magnetized skyrmions, the helicity can be continuously rotated and exactly picked by applying an external el…
Magnetic skyrmions have been receiving growing attention as potential information storage and magnetic logic devices since an increasing number of materials have been identified that support skyrmion phases. Explorations of artificial frustrated systems have led to new insights into controlling and engineering new emergent frustration phenomena in frustrated and disordered systems. Here, we propose a skyrmion spin ice, giving a unifying framework for the study of geometric frustration of skyrmion crystals in a non-frustrated artificial geometrical lattice as a consequence of the structural con…
Geometrically frustrated magnets provide abundant opportunities for discovering complex spin textures, which sometimes yield unconventional electromagnetic responses in correlated electron systems. It is theoretically predicted that magnetic frustration may also promote a topologically nontrivial spin state, i.e., magnetic skyrmions, which are nanometric spin vortices. Empirically, however, skyrmions are essentially concomitant with noncentrosymmetric lattice structures or interfacial-symmetry-breaking heterostructures. Here, we report the emergence of a Bloch-type skyrmion state in the frustr…
Simple mean-field approach for frustrated antiferromagnets on hexagonal lattices, aimed to describe the high-temperature part of the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, is proposed. It is shown, that an interplay between modulation vector symmetry, Zeeman energy and magneto-dipolar interaction leads to stabilization of the triple-$Q$ skyrmion lattice in a certain region of the phase diagram. Corresponding analytical expressions for phase boundaries are derived. It is argued that the developed theory can be applied for the description of the high-temperature part of the phase diagram obse…
A model of an inversion-symmetric frustrated spin system is introduced which hosts three-dimensional extensions of magnetic Skyrmions. In the continuum approximation this model reduces to a non-linear sigma model on a squashed sphere which has a natural interpolating parameter. At one limit of the parameter the model reduces to a frustrated magnetic system earlier considered by Sutcliffe as a host to Hopfions, and in the other limit it becomes very similar to the 3D Skyrme model. To better understand the relation between Hopfions and 3D Skyrmions a model interpolating between the Faddeev-Niemi…
The non-monotonic behavior of the NMR signal linewidth in the 2D quantum Hall system is explained in terms of the interplay between skyrmions localization, due to the influence of disorder, and the non-trivial temperature dependent skyrmion dynamics.
We analyze bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnets, whose underlying symmetry group is SU(4). Spin-pseudospin coherence develops spontaneously when the total electron density is low enough. Quasiparticles are CP^3 skyrmions. One skyrmion induces charge modulations on both of the two layers. At the filling factor$ν=2/m$ one elementary excitation consists of a pair of skyrmions and its charge is $2e/m$. Recent experimental data due to Sawada et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 4534 (1998)] support this conclusion.
Finite-${\mathbf Q}$ magnetic instabilities are rather common in frustrated magnets. When the magnetic susceptibility is maximized at multiple-${\mathbf Q}$ vectors related through lattice symmetry operations, exotic magnetic orderings such as vortex and skyrmion crystals may follow. Here we show that a periodic array of nonmagnetic impurities, which can be realized through charge density wave ordering, leads to a rich phase diagram featuring a plethora of chiral magnetic phases, especially when there is a simple relation between the reciprocal vectors of the impurity superlattice and the magn…
We study formation of a periodical structure of quasiparticle-like magnetic configurations with non-trivial topological charge, known as a magnetic skyrmion phase, on a frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The existence of such a phase, formed on the three interpenetrating sublattices, has been demonstrated for a sufficiently large strength of DMI. The goal of the present investigation is to establish the minimum values of both the DM interaction strength as well as the magnetic field …
The phase diagrams of the frustrated classical spin model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction on the Shastry-Sutherland (S-S) lattice are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulation. For ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighboring (J2) interactions, the introduced exchange frustration enhances the effect of the DM interaction, which enlarges the magnetic field-range with the skyrmion lattice phase and increases the skyrmion density. For antiferromagnetic J2 interactions, the so-called 2q phase (two-sublattice skyrmion crystal) and the spin-flop phase are observed in the simulated phase diagr…
We demonstrate a mechanism of significant reduction, including complete elimination, of the external magnetic field required for the stabilization of a skyrmion lattice (SkX) phase in a frustrated triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet (AFM) with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. It is achieved by coupling of such a AFM plane to a reference ferromagnetic (FM) layer, which generates an effective field cooperating with the external magnetic field. If the FM layer shows some axial single-ion anisotropy then the effective field can also be generated in zero external field due to a spontaneous …
Reentrant spin glasses are frustrated disordered ferromagnets developing vortex-like textures under an applied magnetic field. Our study of a Ni$_{0.81}$Mn$_{0.19}$ single crystal by small angle neutron scattering clarifies their internal structure and shows that these textures are randomly distributed. Spin components transverse to the magnetic field rotate over length scales of 3-15 nm in the explored field range, decreasing as field increases according to a scaling law. Monte-Carlo simulations reveal that the internal structure of the vortices is strongly distorted and differs from that ass…
Motivated by recent experimental results on GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ [Khanh, N.D., Nakajima, T., Yu, X. et al., \emph{Nat. Nanotechnol.} \textbf{15}, 444-449 (2020)], where nanometric square skyrmion lattice was observed, we propose simple analytical mean-field description of the high-temperature part of the phase diagram of centrosymmetric tetragonal frustrated antiferromagnets with dipolar interaction in the external magnetic field. In the reciprocal space dipolar forces provide momentum dependent biaxial anisotropy. It is shown that in tetragonal lattice in the large part of the Brillouin zone for mu…

Skyrmion crystal formation and temperature -- magnetic field phase diagram of the frustrated tirangular-lattice Heisenberg magnet with easy-axis masugnetic anisotropy
We study the quantum mechanics of magnetic skyrmions in the vicinity of the skyrmion-crystal to ferromagnet phase boundary in two-dimensional magnets. We show that the skyrmion excitation has an energy dispersion that splits into multiple bands due to the combination of magnus force and the underlying lattice. Condensation of the skyrmions can give rise to an intermediate phase between the skyrmion crystal and ferromagnet: a quantum liquid, in which skyrmions are not spatially localized. We show that the critical behavior depends on the spin size $S$ and the topological number of the skyrmion.…

The advent of Moiré materials has galvanized interest in the nature of charge carriers in topological bands. In contrast to conventional materials where charge carriers are electron-like quasiparticles, topological bands allow for more exotic possibilities where charge is carried by nontrivial topological textures, such as skyrmions. However, the real space description of skyrmions is ill-suited to address the limit of small or `baby' skyrmions which consist of an electron and a few spin flips. Here, we study the formation of the smallest skyrmions -- spin polarons, formed as bound states of a…
We study the formation and growth of a skyrmion crystal (SkX) phase in a frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in the presence of an external magnetic field. We build phase diagrams in the temperature-field parameter plane, featuring first-order phase transitions and tricritical points, and study their evolution with the increasing DMI strength. It is found that already relatively small DMI intensity can lead to the appearance of the SkX phase at low temperatures in the vicinity of the meeting point of the remaining h…
We present a microscopic theory of skyrmions in the monolayer quantum Hall ferromagnet. It is a peculiar feature of the system that the number density and the spin density are entangled intrinsically as dictated by the W$%_{\infty}$ algebra. The skyrmion and antiskyrmion states are constructed as W$_{\infty }$-rotated states of the hole-excited and electron-excited states, respectively. They are spin textures accompanied with density modulation that decreases the Coulomb energy. We calculate their excitation energy as a function of the Zeeman gap and compared the result with experimental data.
Magnetic skyrmions are promising spin textures for building next-generation magnetic memories and spintronic devices. Nevertheless, one of the major challenges in realizing skyrmion-based devices is the stabilization of ordered arrays of these spin textures in different geometries. Here we numerically study the skyrmion-skyrmion interaction potential that arises due to the dynamics of itinerant electrons coupled to the magnetic texture in a ferromagnetic background with racetrack geometry. We consider different topological textures (ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM)), namely: skyr…
Strongly interacting fermionic systems host a variety of interesting quantum many-body states with exotic excitations. For instance, the interplay of strong interactions and the Pauli exclusion principle can lead to Stoner ferromagnetism, but the fate of this state remains unclear when kinetic terms are added. While in many lattice models the fermions' dispersion results in delocalization and destabilization of the ferromagnet, flat bands can restore strong interaction effects and ferromagnetic correlations. To reveal this interplay, here we propose to study the Hofstadter-Fermi-Hubbard model …
Skyrmions are topological magnetic textures that can arise in non-centrosymmetric ferromagnetic materials. In most systems experimentally investigated to date, skyrmions emerge as classical objects. However, the discovery of skyrmions with nanometer length scales has sparked interest in their quantum properties. Here, we simulate the ground states of two-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg lattices with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and discover a broad region in the zero-temperature phase diagram which hosts quantum skyrmion lattices. We argue that the quantum skyrmion lattice phase can be…
Magnetic skyrmions, topological spin textures observed in chiral magnets, have attracted huge interest due to their applications in the field of spintronics. In this work we study the stability of circular isolated skyrmions in ferromagnetic chiral magnets under the influence of different perturbations and external fields. To this end we develop a general systematic procedure based in a harmonic expansion series of the skyrmion boundary which allows the identifycation of the breakdown of the skyrmion circular shape on each instability channel independently. We apply our approach to a few repre…
Effects of the three-dimensional interplanar coupling on the centrosymmetric skyrmion crystal formation in the frustrated stacked-triangular Heisenberg model
Magnetic skyrmions are vortex-like topological spin textures often observed to form a triangular-lattice skyrmion crystal in structurally chiral magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Recently $β$-Mn structure-type Co-Zn-Mn alloys were identified as a new class of chiral magnet to host such skyrmion crystal phases, while $β$-Mn itself is known as hosting an elemental geometrically frustrated spin liquid. Here we report the intermediate composition system Co$_7$Zn$_7$Mn$_6$ to be a unique host of two disconnected, thermal-equilibrium topological skyrmion phases; one is a conventional s…
Motivated by a recent magnetization reversal experiment on a TbFeCo thin film, we study a topological excitation in the anisotropic nonlinear sigma model together with the Zeeman and magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. Dipole-dipole interactions turn a ferromagnet into a frustrated spin system, which allows a nontrivial spin texture such as a giant skyrmion. We derive an analytic formula for the skyrmion radius. The radius is controllable by the external magnetic field. It is intriguing that a skyrmion may have already been observed as a magnetic domain. A salient feature is that a single sky…
We use the circularly polarized resonant Rayleigh scattering (RRS) to study the quantum Hall ferromagnet at $ν$ = 1. At this filling factor we observe a right handed copolarized RRS which probes the Skyrmion spin texture of the electrons in the photoexcited grounds state. The resonant scattering is not present in the left handed copolarization, and this can be related to the correlation between Skymionic effects, screening and spin wave excitations. These results evidence that RRS is a valid method for the study of the spin texture of the quantum Hall states.

The analysis of the spin wave excitations in two-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet is performed with a single skyrmion in the ground state. We employ the ideas of semiclassical quantization method, duly modified for the use of the lattice model and Maleyev-Dyson boson representation of spin operators. The resulting Schrödinger equation for magnons describes the dispersion and wave functions of spin-wave excitations with strictly non-negative spectrum. In contrast to usual ferromagnet, we demonstrate the existence of three zero modes, corresponding to conformal symmetries spontaneous…
We study the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1 chains, where the ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling competes with the antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling. We use the density matrix renormalization group to obtain the ground states. Through the analysis of spin-spin correlations we identify the double Haldane phase as well as the ferromagnetic phase. It is shown that the ferromagnetic coupling leads to incommensurate correlations in the double Haldane phase. Such short-range correlations transform continuously into the ferromagnetic instability at the transition to the ferromagn…
We study field induced quantum phase in weakly-coupled ferromagnetic frustrated chain LiCuVO$_4$ by neutron diffraction technique. A new incommensurate magnetic peak is observed at $H \ge 8.5$ T. The field dependent propagation vector is identified with the spin density wave correlation in the theoretically predicted magnetic quadrupole order. Quantum fluctuation, geometrical frustration, and interchain interaction induce the exotic spin density wave long-range order in the insulating magnet.
Quantum corrections of the biquadratic interaction in the 1D spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic Heisenberg model are studied. The biquadratic interaction for spin-1/2 chains is eliminated and transformed to the quadratic interaction. Doing a numerical experiment, new insight as to how the classical phases get modified on the inclusion of quantum fluctuations is provided. Observed results suggest the existence of an intermediate region in the ground state phase diagram of the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains with combination of dimer and chiral orders. In addition, from the quantum entan…
Low-temperature thermodynamics of the classical frustrated ferromagnetic spin chain is studied. Using transfer-matrix method we found the behavior of the correlation function and zero-field susceptibility at the ferromagnetic-helical transition point. It is shown that the critical exponent for the susceptibility is changed from 2 to 4/3 at the transition point.
We investigate a hybrid heterostructure with magnetic skyrmions (Sk) inside a chiral ferromagnet interfaced by a thin superconducting film via an insulating barrier. The barrier prevents the electronic transport between the superconductor and the chiral magnet, such that the coupling can only occur through the magnetic fields generated by these materials. We find that Pearl vortices (PV) are generated spontaneously in the superconductor within the skyrmion radius, while anti-Pearl vortices (\(\overline{\mathrm{PV}}\)) compensating the magnetic moment of the Pearl vortices are generated outside…
The formation of a skyrmion crystal and its phase transition are studied taking into account the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction at the interface between a ferroelectric layer and a magnetic layer in a superlattice. The frustration is introduced in both magnetic and ferroelectric films. The films have the simple cubic lattice structure. Spins inside magnetic layers are Heisenberg spins interacting with each other via nearest-neighbor (NN) exchange $J^m$ and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) exchange $J^{2m}$. Polarizations in the ferroelectric layers are assumed to be of Ising type with NN an…
Recent experiments have reported on controlled nucleation of individual skyrmions in chiral magnets. Here we show that in magnetic ultra-thin films with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, single skyrmions of different radii can be nucleated by creating a local distortion in the magnetic field. In our study, we have considered zero temperature quantum nucleation of a single skyrmion from a ferromagnetic phase. The physical scenario we model is one where a uniform field stabilizes the ferromagnet, and an opposing local magnetic field over a circular spot, generated by the tip of a lo…
A giant Skyrmion collapses to a singular point by emitting spin waves in a thin ferromagnetic film, when external magnetic field is increased beyond the critical one. The remnant is a single-spin flipped (SSF) point. The SSF point has a quantum diffusion dynamics governed by the Heisenberg model. We determine its time evolution and show the diffusion process is a continuous-time quantum walk. We also analyze an interference of two SSF points after two Skyrmion bursts. Quantum walks for $S=1/2$ and 1 are exact solvable. The system presents a new type of quantum walk for $S>1/2$, where a SSF poi…
Magnetic field effects on the one-dimensional frustrated ferromagnetic chain are studied by means of effective field theory approaches in combination with numerical calculations utilizing Lanczos diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method. The nature of the ground state is shown to change from a spin-density-wave region to a nematic-like one upon approaching the saturation magnetization. The excitation spectrum is analyzed and the behavior of the single spin-flip excitation gap is studied in detail, including the emergent finite-size corrections.
Starting from microscopic and symmetry considerations, we derive the Hamiltonian describing the exchange interaction between the localized Mn spins and the valence band holes in $Ga_{1-x}Mn_x As$. We find that due to the strong spin-orbit coupling in the valence band, this exchange interaction has a rather complex structure and generates a highly anisotropic effective interaction between the Mn spins. The corresponding ground state has a finite ferromagnetic magnetization but is intrinsically spin-disordered even at zero temperature.
The one-dimensional quantum spin-1/2 model with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction is considered. The Hamiltonian is first bosonized by using the linear spin wave approximation, and then is treated by using the Green's function approach. An integral expression of the quantum correction to the classical ground state energy is derived. The critical behavior of the ground state energy in the vicinity of the transition point from the ferromagnetic to the singlet ground state is analyzed by numerical calculation, and the result is $-8γ^2$.
A spin texture called skyrmion has been recently observed in certain chiral magnets without inversion symmetry. The observed skyrmions are extended objects with typical linear sizes of 10 nm to 100 nm that contain $10^3$ to $10^5$ spins and can be deformed in response to external perturbations. Weak deformations are characterized by the internal modes which are localized around the skyrmion center. Knowledge of internal modes is crucial to assess the stability and rigidity of these topological textures. Here we compute the internal modes of a skyrmion in the ferromagnetic background state by n…

Low temperature properties of the spin-1/2 frustrated ladder with ferromagnetic rungs and legs, and two different antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor interaction are investigated using the modified spin wave approximation in the region with ferromagnetic ground state. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and magnetic structure factors is calculated. The results are consistent with the numerical exact diagonalization results in the intermediate temperature range. Below this temperature range, the finite size effect is significant in the numerical diagonalization results…
