Interaction of two skyrmions stabilized by the ferromagnetic exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and external magnetic field has been studied numerically on a 2D lattice of size large compared to the separation, $d$, between the skyrmions. We show that two skyrmions of the same chirality (determined by the symmetry of the crystal) repel. In accordance with earlier analytical results, their long-range pair interaction falls out with the separation as $\exp(-d/δ_H)$, where $δ_H$ is the magnetic screening length, independent of the DMI. The prefactor in this expression depends on the DMI that drives the repulsion. The latter results in the spiral motion of the two skyrmions around each other, with the separation between them growing logarithmically with time. When two skyrmions of the total topological charge $Q = 2$ are pushed close to each other, the discreteness of the atomic lattice makes them collapse into one skyrmion of charge $Q = 1$ below a critical separation. Experiment is proposed that would allow one to measure the interaction between two skyrmions by holding them in positions with two magnetic tips. Our findings should be of value for designing topologically protected magnetic memory based upon skyrmions.
We study skyrmions in magnetic thin films with structural inversion asymmetry perpendicular to the film plane. We determine the magnetization texture of a single skyrmion and its dependence on the strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction relative to the magnetostatic energy. Furthermore, we construct a phenomenological model that describes the interaction between the motion of skyrmions and electric currents to lowest order in spin-orbit coupling. We estimate the experimental verifiable velocities for current-driven motion of skyrmion textures based on available results obtained from …
We study the collective dynamics of the Skyrmion crystal (SkX) in thin films of ferromagnetic metals resulting from the nontrivial Skyrmion topology. We show that the current-driven motion of the crystal reduces the topological Hall effect and the Skyrmion trajectories bend away from the direction of the electric current (the Skyrmion Hall effect). We find a new dissipation mechanism in non-collinear spin textures that can lead to a much faster spin relaxation than Gilbert damping, calculate the dispersion of phonons in the SkX, and discuss effects of impurity pinning of Skyrmions.
The fabrication of a skyrmion circuit which stabilizes skyrmions is important to realize micro- to nano-sized skyrmion devices. One example of promising skyrmion-based device is Brownian computers, which have been theoretically proposed, but not realized. It would require a skyrmion circuit in which the skyrmion is stabilized and easily movable. However, the usual skyrmion circuits fabricated by etching of the ferromagnetic film decrease the demagnetization field stabilizing the skyrmions, and thus prevent their formation. In this study, a skyrmion Brownian circuit implemented in a continuous …
Breaking the dilemma between small size and room temperature stability is a necessary prerequisite for skyrmion-based information technology. Here we demonstrate by means of rate theory and an atomistic spin Hamiltonian that the stability of isolated skyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnetic films can be enhanced by the concerted variation of magnetic interactions while keeping the skyrmion size unchanged. We predict film systems where the lifetime of sub-10 nm skyrmions can reach years at ambient conditions. The long lifetime of such small skyrmions is due to exceptionally large Arrhenius pre-expo…
The dynamics of magnetic skyrmion driven by spin-polarized current is theoretically studied in the chiral ferromagnetic film with spatially modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Three cases including linear, sinusoidal, and periodic rectangular modulations have been considered, where the increase, decrease, and the periodic modification of the size and velocity of the skyrmion have been observed in the microscopic simulations. These phenomena are well explained by the Thiele equation, where an effective force on the skyrmion is induced by the inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interact…
Current-driven skyrmion motion in random granular films is investigated with interesting findings. For a given current, there exists a critical disorder strength below which its transverse motion could either be boosted below a critical damping or be hindered above the critical damping, resulting in current and disorder dependences of skyrmion Hall angle. The boosting comes mainly from the random force that is opposite to the driving force (current). The critical damping depends on the current density and disorder strength. However, the longitudinal motion of a skyrmion is always hindered by t…
We consider current-driven motion of magnetic skyrmions in granular magnetic films. The study uses micromagnetic modeling and phenomenological analysis based on the Thiele formalism. Remarkably, disorder enhances the effective skyrmion Hall effect that depends on the magnitude of the driving force (current density and non-adiabaticity parameter). The origin is sliding motion of the skyrmion along the grain boundaries, followed by pinning and depinning at the grain junctions. A side-jump can occur during this depinning process. In addition, the critical current that triggers the skyrmion motion…
We show that high concentration of skyrmions can be achieved in magnetic films with quenched disorder. A 2D system of Heisenberg spins with feromagnetic exchange, $J$, and random magnetic anisotropy of strength $D_R \ll J$ has been studied. Analytical theory for the dependence of the average skyrmion size on the magnetic field $H$, and for the stability of pinned skyrmions, is complemented by numerical studies of 2D lattices containing up to 40 million spins. At low fields the average size of the skyrmion, $λ$, is determined by the average size of Imry-Ma domains. On increasing the field the s…
We demonstrate numerically on large spin lattices that one can write skyrmions in a thin magnetic film with a magnetic dipole of a few tens of nanometer in size. Nucleation of non-chiral skyrmions as well as chiral skyrmions formed by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction has been investigated. Analytical model is developed that agrees with numerical results. It is shown that skyrmions can be written though a number of scenarios that depend on the experimental technique and parameters of the system. In one scenario, that branches into subscenarios of different topology, the magnetic dipole on …
We investigate the formation and stability of the skyrmion crystal phase in antiferromagnetic thin films subjected to fieldlike torques such as, e.g., those induced by an electric current in CuMnAs and Mn$_{2}$Au via the inverse spin-galvanic effect. We show that the skyrmion lattice represents the ground state of the antiferromagnet in a substantial area of the phase diagram, parametrized by the staggered field and the (effective) uniaxial anisotropy constant. Skyrmion motion can be driven in the crystal phase by the spin transfer effect. In the metallic scenario, itinerant electrons experien…
We study the modification of micromagnetic configurations in nanostructures, due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that appear at the interface of an ultrathin film. We show that this interaction leads to new micromagnetic boundary conditions that bend the magnetization at the edges. We explore several cases of ultrathin film nanostructures that allow analytical calculations (1D systems, domain walls, cycloids and skyrmions), compare with fully numerical calculations, and show that a good physical understanding of this new type of micromagnetics can be reached. We particularly foc…
We report the observation of room-temperature magnetic skyrmions in Pt/Co/Os/Pt thin-film heterostructures and their response to electric currents. The magnetic properties are extremely sensitive to inserting thin Os layers between the Co-Pt interface resulting in reduced saturation magnetization, magnetic anisotropy and Curie temperature. The observed skyrmions exist in a narrow temperature, applied-field and layer-thickness range near the spin-reorientation transition from perpendicular to in-plane magnetic anisotropy. The skyrmions have an average diameter of 2.3μm and transport measurement…
We show that thermal stability of magnetic skyrmions can be strongly affected by entropic effects. The lifetimes of isolated skyrmions in atomic Pd/Fe bilayers on Ir(111) and on Rh(111) are calculated in the framework of harmonic transition state theory based on an atomistic spin model parametrized from density functional theory. Depending on the system the attempt frequency for skyrmion collapse can change by up to nine orders of magnitude with the strength of the applied magnetic field. We demonstrate that this effect is due to a drastic change of entropy with skyrmion radius which opens a n…
Skyrmions are nanoscale magnetic structures with features promising for future low-power memory or logic devices. In this work, we demonstrate novel scanning techniques based on nitrogen vacancy center magnetometry that simultaneously probe both the magnetic dynamics and structure of room temperature skyrmion bubbles in a thin film system Ta/CoFeB/MgO. We confirm the handedness of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in this material and extract the helicity angle of the skyrmion bubbles. Our measurements also show that the skyrmion bubbles in this material change size in discrete steps, depe…
The static and dynamic states of Néel skyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) have been micromagnetically simulated as functions of the interfacial DMI strength and applied static magnetic field. Findings reveal that while the breathing, counterclockwise (CCW) and clockwise (CW) rotational eigenmodes exist in the skyrmion lattice (SkL) phase, only the first two modes are present in the isolated skyrmion (ISk) phase. Additionally, the eigenfrequency of the CCW mode is insensitive to the magnetic-field driven SkL-ISk phase transition, a…
A generic theory about skyrmion crystal (SkX) formation in chiral magnetic thin films and its fascinating thermodynamic behaviours is presented. A chiral magnetic film can have many metastable states with an arbitrary skyrmion density up to a maximal value when a parameter $κ$, which measures the relative Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) strength, is large enough. The lowest energy state of an infinite film is a long zig-zagged ramified stripe skyrmion occupied the whole film in the absence of a magnetic field. Under an intermediate field perpendicular to the film, the lowest energy sta…
Néel-type magnetic skyrmions in multilayer films have attracted significant amount of attention recently for their stability at room temperature and capability of motion driven by a low-density electrical current, which can be potentially applied to spintronic devices. However, the thermal effect on the formation of the skyrmions and their behavior has rarely been studied. Here, we report a study on the creation of skyrmions in [Pt/Co/Ta]10 multilayer samples at different temperatures using an in-situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. By imaging the magnetization reversal process from …
Skyrmions have attracted significant interest due to their topological spin structures and fascinating physical features. The skyrmion phase arises in materials with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction at interfaces or in volume of non-centrosymmetric materials. However, although skyrmions were generated experimentally, one critical intrinsic relationship between fabrication, microstructures, magnetization and the existence of skyrmions remains to be established. Here, two series of CoFeB ultrathin films with controlled atomic scale structures are employed to reveal this relationship. By in…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin configurations in materials with chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), that are potentially useful for storing or processing information. To date, DMI has been found in few bulk materials, but can also be induced in atomically thin magnetic films in contact with surfaces with large spin-orbit interactions. Recent experiments have reported that isolated magnetic skyrmions can be stabilized even near room temperature in few-atom thick magnetic layers sandwiched between materials that provide asymmetric spin-orbit coupling. Here we present the min…
Due to their exceptional topological and dynamical properties magnetic skyrmions - localized stable spin structures on the nanometre scale - show great promise for future spintronic applications. To become technologically competitive, isolated skyrmions with diameters below 10 nm that are stable at zero magnetic field and room temperature are desired. Despite finding skyrmions in a wide spectrum of materials, the quest for a material with these envisioned properties is still ongoing. Here we report zero field isolated skyrmions with diameters smaller than 5 nm coexisting with 1 nm thin domain …
Magnetic skyrmions present interesting physics due to their topological nature and hold significant promise for future information technologies. A key barrier to realizing skyrmion devices has been stabilizing these spin structures under ambient conditions. In this manuscript, we exploit the tunable magnetic properties of amorphous Fe/Gd mulitlayers to realize skyrmion lattices which are stable over a large temperature and magnetic field parameter space, including room temperature and zero magnetic field. These hybrid skyrmions have both Bloch-type and Néel-type character and are stabilized by…
The revisited theoretical phase diagrams for thin films of cubic helimagnets with the easy-plane anisotropy are shown to have different topology as previously reported [Phys. Rev. B 85, 094429 (2012)]. For both in-plane and out-of-plane directions of an applied magnetic field, the phase diagrams exhibit extensive areas of stable skyrmions, which overlap for a wide range of anisotropy parameters. Although the existence of the out-of-plane skyrmions was contradicted within the previous theoretical models, we prove that additional surface twists lead to their stability, while the moderate easy-pl…
Axisymmetric solitonic states (chiral skyrmions) have been predicted theoretically more than two decades ago. However, until recently they have been observed in a form of skyrmionic condensates (hexagonal lattices and other mesophases). In this paper we report experimental and theoretical investigations of isolated chiral skyrmions discovered in PdFe/Ir(111) bilayers two years ago (Science 341 , 636 (2013)). The results of spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy analyzed within the continuum and discrete models provide a consistent description of isolated skyrmions in thin layers. The exi…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as information carriers in logic or storage devices thanks to their robustness, guaranteed by the topological protection, and their nanometric size. Currently, little is known about the influence of parameters such as disorder, defects or external stimuli, on the long-range spatial distribution and temporal evolution of the skyrmion lattice. Here, using a large (7.3x7.3μm$^{2}$) single crystal nano-slice of Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$, we image up to 70,000 skyrmions, by means of cryo-Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscopy as a function of the applied magne…
We present a study of the stability of room-temperature skyrmions in [Ir/Fe/Co/Pt] thin film multilayers, using the First Order Reversal Curve (FORC) technique and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). FORC diagrams reveal irreversible changes in magnetization upon field reversals, which can be correlated with the evolution of local magnetic textures probed by MFM. Using this approach, we have identified two different mechanisms - (1) skyrmion merger and (2) skyrmion nucleation followed by stripe propagation - which facilitate magnetization reversal in a changing magnetic field. Analysing the signa…
Neél skyrmions originate from interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction (DMI). Recent studies have explored using thin-film ferromagnets and ferrimagnets to host Neél skyrmions for spintronic applications. However, it is unclear if ultrasmall (10 nm or less) skyrmions can ever be stabilized at room temperature for practical use in high density parallel racetrack memories. While thicker films can improve stability, DMI decays rapidly away from the interface. As such, spins far away from the interface would experience near-zero DMI, raising question on whether or not unrealistically large DM…

We study the equilibrium and dynamical properties of skyrmions in thin films of chiral magnets with oblique magnetic field. The shape of an individual skyrmion is non-circular and the skyrmion density decreases with the tilt angle from the normal of films. As a result, the interaction between two skyrmions depends on the relative angle between them in addition to their separation. The triangular lattice of skyrmions under a perpendicular magnetic field is distorted into a centered rectangular lattice for a tilted magnetic field. For a low skyrmion density, skyrmions form a chain like structure…
We fabricate devices in which a magnetic nanopillar spin valve makes contact to a Co/Pt bilayer thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, in order to achieve local control of domains in the Co/Pt bilayer underneath the nanopillar. The goal is to develop the ability to nucleate, detect, and annihilate magnetic skyrmions in the Co/Pt using spin-polarized currents from the nanopillar. We demonstrate the ability to distinguish the local behavior of the Co/Pt film beneath the nanopillar from the extended film and show that the two can switch independently of each other. This allows us to is…
This paper reports on magnetometry and magnetoresistance measurements of MnSi epilayers performed in out-of-plane magnetic fields. We present a theoretical analysis of the chiral modulations that arise in confined cubic helimagnets where the uniaxial anisotropy axis and magnetic field are both out-of-plane. In contrast to in-plane field measurements (Wilson et al., Phys. Rev. B 86, 144420 (2012)), the hard-axis uniaxial anisotropy in MnSi/Si(111) increases the energy of (111)-oriented skyrmions and in-plane helicoids relative to the cone phase, and makes the cone phase the only stable magnetic…
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin textures with a nontrivial topology that offer a potential for future magnetic memory and storage devices. The controlled formation and adjustment of size and density of magnetic skyrmions in Ta/CoFeB/MgO trilayers is demonstrated. It is the ideal candidate for the use as a bottom electrode integration into CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB magnetic tunnel junctions. Varying the CoFeB thickness close to the out-of-plane to in-plane magnetic phase transition, we find that subtle energy contributions enable the skyrmion formation in a narrow thickness window, corresponding to on…
We explored strong coupling of dynamic breathing modes in one-dimensional (1D) skyrmion lattices periodically arranged in thin-film nanostrips. The coupled breathing modes exhibit characteristic concave-down dispersions that represent the in-phase high-energy mode at zero wavenumber (k=0) and the anti-phase low-energy mode at the Brillouin zone boundary (k=kBZ). The band width of the allowed modes increases with decreasing inter-distance between nearest-neighboring skyrmions. Furthermore, the collective breathing modes propagate very well through the thin-film nanostrips, as fast as 200 ~ 700 …
We point out that a peculiar annihilation of a vortex-antovortex pair observed numerically by Hertel and Schneider [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 177202 (2006)] represents the formation and subsequent decay of a skyrmion.
The magnetic structure of the in-plane skyrmions in epitaxial MnSi/Si(111) thin films is probed in three dimensions by the combination of polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS). We demonstrate that skyrmions exist in a region of the phase diagram above at temperature of 10 K. PNR shows the skyrmions are confined to the middle of the film due to the potential well formed by the surface twists. However, SANS shows that there is considerable disorder within the plane indicating that the magnetic structure is a 2D skyrmion glass.
Magnetic phase transitions are a test bed for exploring the physics of non-equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter, which become even more complex when topological constraints are involved. In particular, the investigation of skyrmions and skyrmion lattices offers insight into fundamental processes of topological-charge creation and annihilation upon changing the magnetic state. Nonetheless, the exact physical mechanisms behind these phase transitions remain unresolved. Here, we have systematically compared ultra-thin films with isotropic and anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (D…
Quantum collapse of a small skyrmion in a thin magnetic film with Dzyalishinskii-Moriya (DMI) interaction has been studied. The energy of the skyrmion and the stability threshold determined by the DMI, the external magnetic field, and the underlying atomic lattice are investigated analytically and numerically. The Lagrangian describing the coupled dynamics of the skyrmion size and the chirality angle is derived. Equations of motion possess an instanton solution that corresponds to the skyrmion underbarrier contraction via quantum tunneling with subsequent collapse and decay of the topological …
A detailed investigation of the magnetization processes in epitaxial MnSi thin film reveals the existence of elliptically distorted skyrmion strings that lie in the plane of the film. We provide proof that the uniaxial anisotropy stabilizes this state over extended regions of the magnetic phase diagram. Theoretical analysis of an observed cascade of first-order phase transitions is based on rig- orous numerical calculations of competing chiral modulations, which shows the existence of helicoids, elliptic skyrmions, and cone phases.
Recent experiments have shown that magnetic skyrmion bubbles can be generated and injected at room temperature in thin films [W. Jiang et al, Science vol. 349, 283 (2015)]. Here, we demonstrate, using micromagnetic modeling, that such skyrmions can be generated by an inhomogeneous spin Hall torque in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs). In the experimental Ta/Co$_{20}$Fe$_{60}$B$_{20}$ thin films, the DMI is rather small; nevertheless, the skyrmion bubbles are stable, or at least metastable on observational time scales.
We study the recently introduced 'critically coupled' model of magnetic Skyrmions, generalising it to thin films with curved geometry. The model feels keenly the extrinsic geometry of the film in three-dimensional space. We find exact Skyrmion solutions on spherical, conical and cylindrical thin films. Axially symmetric solutions on cylindrical films are described by kinks tunnelling between 'vacua'. For the model defined on general compact thin films, we prove the existence of energy minimising multi-Skyrmion solutions and construct the (resolved) moduli space of these solutions.
The dynamics of a vortex in a thin-film ferromagnet resembles the motion of a charged massless particle in a uniform magnetic field. Similar dynamics is expected for other magnetic textures with a nonzero skyrmion number. However, recent numerical simulations revealed that skyrmion magnetic bubbles show significant deviations from this model. We show that a skyrmion bubble possesses inertia and derive its mass from the standard theory of a thin-film ferromagnet. Besides center-of-mass motion, other low energy modes are waves on the edge of the bubble traveling with different speeds in opposite…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as information carriers in a new generation of memories. How to generate and stabilize skyrmions is essential for their successful application to technology. Here we theoretically demonstrate that arrays of skyrmions can be imprinted in ultrathin ferromagnetic films in large numbers by bringing a magnetic nanostructured template close to the film. Two kind of templates, allowed by present-day nanotechnologies, are studied: arrays of ferromagnetic nanorods and superconducting vortices. Skyrmions are generated when exposing magnetic films to the templa…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically-distinct swirls of magnetic moments which display particle-like behaviour, including the ability to undergo thermally-driven diffusion. In this paper we study the thermally activated motion of arrays of skyrmions using temperature dependent micromagnetic simulations where the skyrmions form spontaneously. In particular, we study the interaction of skyrmions with grain boundaries, which are a typical feature of sputtered ultrathin films used in experimental devices. We find the interactions lead to two distinct regimes. For longer lag times the grains lead t…
An enhancement of the spin-orbit effects arising on an interface between a ferromagnet (FM) and a heavy metal (HM) is possible through the strong breaking of the structural inversion symmetry in the layered films. Here we show that the introduction of an ultrathin W interlayer between Co and Ru in Ru/Co/Ru films enables to preserve perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and simultaneously induce a large interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI). We find that the Ru/Co/W/Ru films have PMA up to 0.35 nm of the nominal thickness of W (tW). The study of the spin-wave propagation in the…
A theoretical study of the current-driven dynamics of magnetic skyrmions in disordered perpendicularly-magnetized ultrathin films is presented. The disorder is simulated as a granular structure in which the local anisotropy varies randomly from grain to grain. The skyrmion velocity is computed for different disorder parameters and ensembles. Similar behavior is seen for spin-torques due to in-plane currents and the spin Hall effect, where a pinning regime can be identified at low currents with a transition towards the disorder-free case at higher currents, similar to domain wall motion in diso…
Inertial mass of a skyrmion arising from spin-phonon interaction is computed exactly within a toy model of the magnetoelastic coupling in a ferromagnetic film. The mass scales as the square of the strength of the magnetoelastic coupling, as the square of the film thickness, and as the first power of the lateral size of the skyrmion. For nanometer skyrmions it is in the ballpark of a few electron masses but may be significantly greater in materials with large magnetostriction. These findings are expected to stand for any complex structure of spin-phonon interaction in real materials. They must …
We consider the interplay between magnetic skyrmions in an insulating thin film and the Dirac surface states of a 3D topological insulator (TI), coupled by proximity effect. The magnetic texture of skyrmions can lead to confinement of Dirac states at the skyrmion radius, where out of plane magnetization vanishes. This confinement can result in charging of the skyrmion texture. The presence of bound states is robust in an external magnetic field, which is needed to stabilize skyrmions. It is expected that for relevant experimental parameters skyrmions will have a few bound states that can be tu…
Magnetic skyrmions form in chiral multilayers from the shrinking or fission of elongated stripe textures. Here we report an experimental and theoretical study of the temperature dependence of this stripe-to-skyrmion transition in Co/Pt-based multilayers. Field-reversal magnetometry and Lorentz microscopy experiments over 100 - 350 K establish the increased efficacy of stripe-to-skyrmion fission at higher temperatures - driven primarily by the thermal evolution of key magnetic interactions - thereby enhancing skyrmion density. Atomistic calculations elucidate that the energy barrier to fission …
Competing interactions produce finite-size textures in myriad condensed matter systems, typically forming elongated stripe or round bubble domains. Transitions between stripe and bubble phases, driven by field or temperature, are expected to be reversible in nature. Here we report on the distinct character of the analogous transition for nanoscale spin textures in chiral Co/Pt-based multilayer films, known to host Néel skyrmions, using microscopy, magnetometry, and micromagnetic simulations. Upon increasing field, individual stripes fission into multiple skyrmions, and this transition exhibits…
We report the critical role of La doping in the topological Hall effect observed in LaxEu1-xO thin films (~ 50 nm) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. When the La doping exceeds 0.036, topological Hall effect emerges, which we attribute to the formation of magnetic skyrmions. Besides, the La doping is found to play a critical role in determining the phases, densities, and sizes of the skyrmions in the LaxEu1-xO thin films. The maximum region of the skyrmion phase diagram is observed on the La0.1Eu0.9O thin film. As the La doping increases, the skyrmion density increases while the skyrmion size de…
Thin films of ferrimagnetic Mn$_4$N are candidate materials to host magnetic skyrmions that have demonstrated thermal stability up to 450$^\circ$C. However, there are no experimental reports observing skyrmions in this system. Here, we discuss the results of sputter grown 15-17~nm Mn$_4$N thin films on MgO substrate capped with Pt$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$ layers. Vibrating sample magnetometry measurement of out-of-plane hysteresis loops confirmed that magnetic properties are insensitive to the cap layer composition. Imaging based on magnetic force microscopy measurements observed 300 to 50~nm sized sky…
Thin magnetic films with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions are known to host skyrmion crystals, which typically have a hexagonal lattice structure. We investigate skyrmion-lattice configurations in synthetic antiferromagnets, i.e., a bilayer of thin magnetic films that is coupled antiferromagnetically. By means of Monte-Carlo simulations, we find that by tuning the interlayer coupling the skyrmion lattice structure can be tuned from square to hexagonal. We give a simple interpretation for the existence of this transition based on the fact that for synthetic antiferromagnetic coupling the skyr…
Skyrmions are topologically protected field configurations with particle-like properties that play important roles in various fields of science. Recently, skyrmions have been directly observed in chiral magnets. Here, we investigate the effects of nonmagnetic impurities (structural point-like defects) on the different initial states (random or helical states) and on the formation of the skyrmion crystal in a discrete lattice. By using first-principle calculations and Monte Carlo techniques, we have shown that even a small percentage of spin vacancies present in the chiral magnetic thin film af…
Magneto-transport properties have been investigated for epitaxial thin films of B20-type MnSi grown on Si(111) substrates. Both Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and topological Hall effect (THE) clearly point to the robust formation of skyrmions over a wide temperature-magnetic field region. New features distinct from those of bulk MnSi are observed for epitaxial MnSi films: a shorter (nearly half) period of the spin helix and skyrmions, and an opposite sign of THE. These observations suggest versatile features of skyrmion-induced THE beyond the current understanding.
