In this paper, we show that the Italian domination number of every lexicographic product graph $G\circ H$ can be expressed in terms of five different domination parameters of $G$. These parameters can be defined under the following unified approach, which encompasses the definition of several well-known domination parameters and introduces new ones. Let $N(v)$ denote the open neighbourhood of $v\in V(G)$, and let $w=(w_0,w_1, \dots,w_l)$ be a vector of nonnegative integers such that $ w_0\ge 1$. We say that a function $f: V(G)\longrightarrow \{0,1,\dots ,l\}$ is a $w$-dominating function if $f(N(v))=\sum_{u\in N(v)}f(u)\ge w_i$ for every vertex $v$ with $f(v)=i$. The weight of $f$ is defined to be $ω(f)=\sum_{v\in V(G)} f(v)$. The $w$-domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_{w}(G)$, is the minimum weight among all $w$-dominating functions on $G$. If we impose restrictions on the minimum degree of $G$ when needed, under this approach we can define, for instance, the domination number, the total domination number, the $k$-domination number, the $k$-tuple domination number, the $k$-tuple total domination number, the Italian domination number, the total Italian domination number, and the $\{k\}$-domination number. Specifically, we show that $γ_{I}(G\circ H)=γ_{w}(G)$, where $w\in \{2\}\times\{0,1,2\}^{l}$ and $l\in \{2,3\}$. The decision on whether the equality holds for specific values of $w_0,\dots,w_l$ will depend on the value of the domination number of $H$. This paper also provides preliminary results on $γ_{w}(G)$ and raises the challenge of conducting a detailed study of the topic.
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$. The domination polynomial of $G$ is the polynomial $D(G,λ)=\sum_{i=0}^{n} d(G,i) λ^{i}$, where $d(G,i)$ is the number of dominating sets of $G$ of size $i$. We consider the lexicographic product of two specific graphs and study their domination polynomials.
In this paper we begin an exploration of several domination-related parameters (among which are the total, restrained, total restrained, paired, outer connected and total outer connected domination numbers) in the generalized lexicographic product (GLP for short) of graphs. We prove that for each GLP of graphs there exist several equality chains containing these parameters. Some known results on standard lexicographic product of two graphs are generalized or/and extended. We also obtain results on well $μ$-dominated GLP of graphs, where $μ$ stands for any of the above mentioned domination para…
An Italian dominating function (IDF) of a graph G is a function $ f: V(G) \rightarrow \{0,1,2\} $ satisfying the condition that for every $ v\in V $ with $ f(v) = 0$, $\sum_{ u\in N(v)} f(u) \geq 2. $ The weight of an IDF on $G$ is the sum $ f(V)= \sum_{v\in V}f(v) $ and the Italian domination number, $ γ_I(G) $, is the minimum weight of an IDF. An IDF is a perfect Italian dominating function (PID) on $G$, if for every vertex $ v \in V(G) $ with $ f(v) = 0 $ the total weight assigned by $f$ to the neighbours of $ v $ is exactly 2, i.e., all the neighbours of $u$ are assigned the weight 0 by $f…
In this article, we obtain closed formulae for the Italian domination number of rooted product graphs. As a particular case of the study, we derive the corresponding formulas for corona graphs, and we provide an alternative proof that the problem of computing the Italian domination number of a graph is NP-hard.
In a graph $G$, a vertex dominates itself and its neighbours. A subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is said to be a double dominating set of $G$ if $S$ dominates every vertex of $G$ at least twice. The minimum cardinality among all double dominating sets of $G$ is the double domination number. In this article, we obtain tight bounds and closed formulas for the double domination number of lexicographic product graphs $G\circ H$ in terms of invariants of the factor graphs $G$ and $H$.
The connected domination game was recently introduced by Borowiecki, Fiedorowicz and Sidorowicz as another variation of the domination game. The rules are essentially the same, except that the set of played vertices must be connected at all stages of the game. We answer a problem from their paper regarding the relation between the number of moves in a game where Dominator/Staller starts the game. In this paper we also study the relation to the diameter and present graphs with small connected game domination number. We determine the values on the lexicographic product graphs, and consider the e…
An Italian dominating function on a (di)graph $G$ with vertex set $V(G)$ is a function $f: V(G) \to \{0, 1, 2\}$ such that every vertex $v \in V(G)$ such that $f(v) = 0$ has an (in)neighbour assigned 2 or two (in)neighbours assigned 1. We complete the investigation of the Italian domination numbers of Cartesian products of directed cycles.
An Italian dominating function (IDF), of a graph G is a function $ f: V(G) \rightarrow \{0,1,2\} $ satisfying the condition that for every $ v\in V(G) $ with $ f(v) = 0, \sum_{ u\in N(v)} f(u) \geq 2. $ The weight of an IDF on $G$ is the sum $ f(V)= \sum_{v\in V(G)}f(v) $ and Italian domination number, $ γ_I(G) $ is the minimum weight of an IDF. In this paper, we study the impact of corona operator and addition of twins on Italian domination number.
In this paper, an upper bound for the perfect Italian domination number of the cartesian product of any two graphs is obtained and the exact value of this parameter for cartesian product of some special graphs are obtained. We have also proved that for any two positive integers $a$, $b$ there exists a graph $G$ and an induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ such that $γ_I^p(G) = a$ and $γ_I^p(H) = b$. Relationship of the perfect Italian domination number with the Roman domination number and the perfect domination number of a graph $G$ are obtained and the corresponding realization problems are also solved…
Let k be a positive integer and let f be a map from V(G) to the set of all subsets of {1,2,3,...,k}. The function f is called a k-rainbow dominating function of G provided that whenever u is a vertex of G such that f(u) is the empty set, then for each integer r in {1,2,3,...,k} there is a neighbor x of u such that f(x) contains r. The k-rainbow domination number of G is the minimum sum (over all the vertices of G) of the cardinalities of the subsets assigned by a k-rainbow dominating function of G. The k-rainbow domination number of G is the ordinary domination number of the Cartesian product …
The neighbourhood of a vertex $v$ of a graph $G$ is the set $N(v)$ of all vertices adjacent to $v$ in $G$. For $D\subseteq V(G)$ we define $\overline{D}=V(G)\setminus D$. A set $D\subseteq V(G)$ is called a super dominating set if for every vertex $u\in \overline{D}$, there exists $v\in D$ such that $N(v)\cap \overline{D}=\{u\}$. The super domination number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality among all super dominating sets in $G$. In this article we obtain closed formulas and tight bounds for the super dominating number of lexicographic product graphs in terms of invariants of the factor graphs…
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph. A subset $D$ of $V$ is a \textit{restrained dominating set} if every vertex in $V \setminus D$ is adjacent to a vertex in $D$ and to a vertex in $V \setminus D$. The \textit{restrained domination number}, denoted by $γ_r(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of a restrained dominating set of $G$. A function $f : V \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ is a \textit{restrained Italian dominating function} on $G$ if (i) for each vertex $v \in V$ for which $f(v)=0$, it holds that $\sum_{u \in N_G(v)} f(u) \geq 2$, (ii) the subgraph induced by $\{v \in V \mid f(v)=0 \}$ has no isolated vert…
Given a graph $G$ and a subset of vertices $D\subseteq V(G)$, the external neighbourhood of $D$ is defined as $N_e(D)=\{u\in V(G)\setminus D:\, N(u)\cap D\ne \varnothing\}$, where $N(u)$ denotes the open neighbourhood of $u$. Now, given a subset $D\subseteq V(G)$ and a vertex $v\in D$, the external private neighbourhood of $v$ with respect to $D$ is defined to be $epn(v,D)=\{u\in V(G)\setminus D: N(u)\cap D=\{v\}\}.$ The strong differential of a set $D\subseteq V(G)$ is defined as $\partial_s(D)=|N_e(D)|-|D_w|,$ where $D_w=\{v\in D: epn(v,D)\neq \varnothing\}$. In this paper we focus on the st…
In a graph $G=(V,E)$, each vertex $v\in V$ is labelled with $0$, $1$ or $2$ such that each vertex labelled with $0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex labelled $2$ or two vertices labelled $1$. Such kind of labelling is called an Italian dominating function (IDF) of $G$. The weight of an IDF $f$ is $w(f)=\sum_{v\in V}f(v)$. The Italian domination number of $G$ is $γ_{I}(G)=\min_{f} w(f)$. Gao et al. (2019) have determined the value of $γ_I(P(n,3))$. In this article, we focus on the study of the Italian domination number of generalized Petersen graphs $P(n, k)$, $k\neq3$. We determine the value…
An Italian dominating function on a digraph $D$ with vertex set $V(D)$ is defined as a function $f : V(D) \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ such that every vertex $v \in V(D)$ with $f(v) = 0$ has at least two in-neighbors assigned $1$ under $f$ or one in-neighbor $w$ with $f(w) = 2$. In this paper, we determine the exact values of the Italian domination numbers of some products of directed cycles.
For a graph $G=(V(G),E(G))$, an Italian dominating function (ID function) $f:V(G)\rightarrow\{0,1,2\}$ has the property that for every vertex $v\in V(G)$ with $f(v)=0$, either $v$ is adjacent to a vertex assigned $2$ under $f$ or $v$ is adjacent to least two vertices assigned $1$ under $f$. The weight of an ID function is $\sum_{v\in V(G)}f(v)$. The Italian domination number is the minimum weight taken over all ID functions of $G$. In this paper, we initiate the study of a variant of ID functions. A restrained Italian dominating function (RID function) $f$ of $G$ is an ID function of $G$ for w…
A vertex $v$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is said to be undefended with respect to a function $f: V \longrightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ if $f(v)=0$ and $f(u)=0$ for every vertex $u$ adjacent to $v$. We call the function $f$ a weak Roman dominating function if for every $v$ such that $f(v)=0$ there exists a vertex $u$ adjacent to $v$ such that $f(u)\in \{1,2\}$ and the function $f': V \longrightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ defined by $f'(v)=1$, $f'(u)=f(u)-1$ and $f'(z)=f(z)$ for every $z\in V \setminus\{u,v\}$, has no undefended vertices. The weight of $f$ is $w(f)=\sum_{v\in V(G) }f(v)$. The weak Roman domination number …
For a graph $G=(V(G),E(G))$, an Italian dominating function (ID function) of $G$ is a function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ such that for each vertex $v\in V(G)$ with $f(v)=0$, $f(N(v))\geq2$, that is, either there is a vertex $u \in N(v)$ with $f (u) = 2$ or there are two vertices $x,y\in N(v)$ with $f(x)=f(y)=1$. A function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ is a covering Italian dominating function (CID function) of $G$ if $f$ is an ID function and $\{v\in V(G)\mid f(v)\neq0\}$ is a vertex cover set. The covering Italian domination number (CID number) $γ_{cI}(G)$ is the minimum weight taken ove…
The orientable domination number, ${\rm DOM}(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the largest domination number over all orientations of $G$. In this paper, ${\rm DOM}$ is studied on different product graphs and related graph operations. The orientable domination number of arbitrary corona products is determined, while sharp lower and upper bounds are proved for Cartesian and lexicographic products. A result of Chartrand et al. from 1996 is extended by establishing the values of ${\rm DOM}(K_{n_1,n_2,n_3})$ for arbitrary positive integers $n_1,n_2$ and $n_3$. While considering the orientable domination numb…
A longest sequence $S$ of distinct vertices of a graph $G$ such that each vertex of $S$ dominates some vertex that is not dominated by its preceding vertices, is called a Grundy dominating sequence; the length of $S$ is the Grundy domination number of $G$. In this paper we study the Grundy domination number in the four standard graph products: the Cartesian, the lexicographic, the direct, and the strong product. For each of the products we present a lower bound for the Grundy domination number which turns out to be exact for the lexicographic product and is conjectured to be exact for the stro…
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, $f:V \rightarrow \{0,1,2 \}$ is the Italian dominating function of $G$ if $f$ satisfies $\sum_{u \in N(v)}f(u) \geq 2$ when $f(v)=0$. Denote $w(f)=\sum_{v \in V}f(v)$ as the weight of $f$. Let $V_i=\{v:f(v)=i\},i=0,1,2$, we call $f$ the independent Italian dominating function if $V_1 \cup V_2$ is an independent set. The independent Italian domination number of $G$ is the minimum weight of independent Italian dominating function $f$, denoted by $i_{I}(G)$. We equivalently transform the independent domination problem of the connected block graph $G$ to the induced indepe…
A perfect Italian dominating function of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a function $f : V \to \{0,1,2\}$ such that for every vertex $f(v) = 0$, it holds that $\sum_{u \in N(v)} f(u) = 2$, i.e., the weight of the labels assigned by $f$ to the neighbors of $v$ is exactly two. The weight of a perfect Italian function is the sum of the weights of the vertices. The perfect Italian domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ^p_I(G)$, is the minimum weight of any perfect Italian dominating function of $G$. While introducing the parameter, Haynes and Henning (Discrete Appl. Math. (2019), 164--177) also proposed the…
Let $w=(w_0,w_1, \dots,w_l)$ be a vector of nonnegative integers such that $ w_0\ge 1$. Let $G$ be a graph and $N(v)$ the open neighbourhood of $v\in V(G)$. Given a $w$-dominating function $f$ and any pair of adjacent vertices $v, u\in V(G)$ with $f(v)=0$ and $f(u)>0$, the function $f_{u\rightarrow v}$ is defined by $f_{u\rightarrow v}(v)=1$, $f_{u\rightarrow v}…
A digraph $D$ is an efficient closed domination digraph if there exists a subset $S$ of $V(D)$ for which the closed out-neighborhoods centered in vertices of $S$ form a partition of $V(D)$. In this work we deal with efficient closed domination digraphs among several product of digraphs. We completely describe the efficient closed domination digraphs among lexicographic and strong products of digraphs. We characterize those direct products of digraphs that are efficient closed domination digraphs, where factors are either two cycles or two paths. Among Cartesian product of digraphs, we describe…
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$. The domination polynomial of $G$ is the polynomial $D(G,λ)=\sum_{i=0}^{n} d(G,i) λ^{i}$, where $d(G,i)$ is the number of dominating sets of $G$ of size $i$. Every root of $D(G,λ)$ is called the domination root of $G$. We present families of graphs whose their domination polynomial have no nonzero real roots. We observe that these graphs have complex domination roots with positive real part. Then, we consider the lexicographic product of two graphs and obtain a formula for domination polynomial of this product. Using this product, we construct a family of…
The power domination number arises from the monitoring of electrical networks and its determination is an important problem. Upper bounds for power domination numbers can be obtained by constructions. Lower bounds for the power domination number of several families of graphs are known, but they usually arise from specific properties of each family and the methods do not generalize. In this paper we exploit the relationship between power domination and zero forcing to obtain the first general lower bound for the power domination number. We apply this bound to obtain results for both the power d…
We study the independence complex of the lexicographic product $G[H]$ of a forest $G$ and a graph $H$. We prove that for a forest $G$ which is not dominated by a single vertex, if the independence complex of $H$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of spheres, then so is the independence complex of $G[H]$. We offer two examples of explicit calculations. As the first example, we determine the homotopy type of the independence complex of $L_m [H]$, where $L_m$ is the tree on $m$ vertices with no branches, for any positive integer $m$ when the independence complex of $H$ is homotopy equivalent t…
The Z-domination game is a variant of the domination game in which each newly selected vertex $u$ in the game must have a not yet dominated neighbor, but after the move all vertices from the closed neighborhood of $u$ are declared to be dominated. The Z-domination game is the fastest among the five natural domination games. The corresponding game Z-domination number of a graph $G$ is denoted by $γ_{Zg}(G)$. It is proved that the game domination number and the game total domination number of a graph can be expressed as the game Z-domination number of appropriate lexicographic products. Graphs w…
A longest sequence $(v_1,\ldots,v_k)$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a Grundy total dominating sequence of $G$ if for all $i$, $N(v_i) \setminus \bigcup_{j=1}^{i-1}N(v_j)\not=\emptyset$. The length $k$ of the sequence is called the Grundy total domination number of $G$ and denoted $γ_{gr}^{t}(G)$. In this paper, the Grundy total domination number is studied on four standard graph products. For the direct product we show that $γ_{gr}^t(G\times H) \geq γ_{gr}^t(G)γ_{gr}^t(H)$, conjecture that the equality always holds, and prove the conjecture in several special cases. For the lexicographic produ…

A graph $G=(V,E)$ is $γ$-excellent if $V$ is a union of all $γ$-sets of $G$, where $γ$ stands for the domination number. Let $\mathcal{I}$ be a set of all mutually nonisomorphic graphs and $\emptyset \not= \mathcal{H} \subsetneq \mathcal{I}$. In this paper we initiate the study of the $\mathcal{H}$-$γ$-excellent graphs, which we define as follows. A graph $G$ is $\mathcal{H}$-$γ$-excellent if the following hold: (i) for every $H \in \mathcal{H}$ and for each $x \in V(G)$ there exists an induced subgraph $H_x$ of $G$ such that $H$ and $H_x$ are isomorphic, $x \in V(H_x)$ and $V(H_x)$ is a subse…
An \textit{Italian dominating function} on a digraph $D$ with vertex set $V(D)$ is defined as a function $f : V(D) \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ such that every vertex $v \in V(D)$ with $f(v) = 0$ has at least two in-neighbors assigned $1$ under $f$ or one in-neighbor $w$ with $f(w) = 2$. The \textit{weight} of an Italian dominating function $f$ is the value $ω(f) = f(V(D)) = \sum_{u \in V(D)} f(u)$. The \textit{Italian domination number} of a digraph $D$, denoted by $γ_I(D)$, is the minimum taken over the weights of all Italian dominating functions on $D$. The \textit{Italian bondage number} of a …
In this paper we study the Grundy domination number on the $X$-join product $G\hookleftarrow \mathcal R$ of a graph $G$ and a family of graphs $\mathcal R=\{G_v: v\in V(G)\}$. The results led us to extend the few known families of graphs where this parameter can be efficiently computed. We prove that if, for all $v\in V(G)$, the Grundy domination number of $G_v$ is given, and $G$ is a power of a cycle, a power of a path, or a split graph, computing the Grundy domination number of $G\hookleftarrow \mathcal R$ can be done in polynomial time. In particular, the results for power of cycles and pat…
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n(G)$ and vertex set $V(G)$. Given a set $S\subseteq V(G)$, we define the external neighbourhood of $S$ as the set $N_e(S)$ of all vertices in $V(G)\setminus S$ having at least one neighbour in $S$. The differential of $S$ is defined to be $\partial(S)=|N_e(S)|-|S|$. In this paper, we introduce the study of the $2$-packing differential of a graph, which we define as $\partial_{2p}(G)=\max\{\partial(S): S\subseteq V(G) \text{ is a }2\text{-packing}\}.$ We show that the $2$-packing differential is closely related to several graph parameters, including the packing num…
