The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as base stations (BSs) is envisaged as a key enabler for the fifth generation (5G) and beyond-5G networks. Specifically, aerial base stations (UAV-BS) are expected to provide ubiquitous connectivity and high spectral efficiency. To this end, we present in this correspondence an in-depth look into the integration of rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) with UAV-BSs and downlink transmissions. A non-convex problem of joint UAV placement, RSMA precoding, and rate splitting, aiming to maximize the weighted sum data rate of users is formulated. Due to its complexity, two sub-problems are investigated, namely the UAV placement and RSMA parameters optimization. The resulting solutions are then combined to propose a novel alternating optimization method. Simulation results illustrate the latter's efficiency compared to baseline approaches.
Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) is an emerging flexible and powerful multiple access for downlink multiantenna networks. The relations between the sum rate and blocklength of RSMA are investigated for a wide range of network loads and user deployments. Numerical results demonstrate that RSMA can achieve the same transmission rate as Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) and Space Division Multip…
In this paper, we consider the precoder design for downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) systems. The proposed scheme with simultaneous diagonalization (SD) decomposes the MIMO channel matrices of the users into scalar channels via higher-order generalized singular value decomposition for the common message (CM) and block diagonalization (BD) for the private messages, thereby enabling low-complexity element-by-element successive interference cancellation (SIC) and decoding at the receivers. Furthermore, the proposed SD MIMO-RSMA overcomes a critic…
In this paper, the problem of sum-rate maximization for an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted downlink rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) transmission system is studied. In the considered model, the active RIS is deployed to overcome severe power attenuation, which is caused by the cumulative product of RIS incidence path loss and the reflection path loss. Since the active RIS can adjust both the phase and the amplitude of the incident signal simultaneously, the RIS control scheme requires delicate design to improve RSMA communication performance. To address this issue…
This work studies the optimization of rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) transmission technique for a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) downlink system. Main idea of RSMA is to split the message for each user equipment (UE) to private and common messages and perform superposition coding at transmitters so as to enable flexible decoding at receivers. It is challenging to implement ideal RSMA scheme particularly when there are many UEs, since the number of common signals exponentially increases with the number of UEs. An efficient RSMA scheme is hence proposed that uses a linearly increasing…
Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is a general multiple access scheme for downlink multi-antenna systems embracing both classical spatial division multiple access and more recent non-orthogonal multiple access. Finding a linear precoding strategy that maximizes the sum spectral efficiency of RSMA is a challenging yet significant problem. In this paper, we put forth a novel precoder design framework that jointly finds the linear precoders for the common and private messages for RSMA. Our approach is first to approximate the non-smooth minimum function part in the sum spectral efficiency of …

Space-Division Multiple Access (SDMA) utilizes linear precoding to separate users in the spatial domain and relies on fully treating any residual multi-user interference as noise. Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) uses linearly precoded superposition coding with successive interference cancellation (SIC) and relies on user grouping and ordering to enforce some users to fully decode and cancel interference created by other users. In this paper, we argue that to efficiently cope with the high throughput, heterogeneity of Quality-of-Service (QoS), and massive connectivity requirements of futu…
The Cooperative Rate-Splitting (CRS) scheme, proposed evolves from conventional Rate Splitting (RS) and relies on forwarding a portion of the RS message by the relaying users. In terms of secrecy enhancement, it has been shown that CRS outperforms its non-cooperative counterpart for a two-user Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC). Given the massive connectivity requirement of 6G, we have generalized the existing secure two-user CRS framework to the multi-user framework, where the highest-security users must be selected as the relay nodes. This paper addresses the problem …

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) for multi-user downlink operates by splitting the message for each user equipment (UE) into a private message and a set of common messages, which are simultaneously transmitted by means of superposition coding. The RSMA scheme can enhance throughput and connectivity as compared to conventional multiple access techniques by optimizing the rate-splitting ratios along with the corresponding downlink beamforming vectors. Further elaboration of the systematic performance metrics is undertaken by developing analytical expressions for area spectral efficiency and sum-rate in the RSMA-enhanced multi-cell dense networ…
A novel rate splitting space division multiple access (SDMA) scheme based on grouped code index modulation (GrCIM) is proposed for the sixth generation (6G) downlink transmission. The proposed RSMA-GrCIM scheme transmits information to multiple user equipments (UEs) through the space division multiple access (SDMA) technique, and exploits code index modulation for rate splitting. Since the CIM scheme conveys information bits via the index of the selected Walsh code and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signal, our RSMA scheme transmits the private messages of each user through the indices, and …

Aerial-ground interference mitigation has been deemed as the main challenge in realizing cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. Due to the line-of-sight (LoS)-dominant air-ground channels, the UAV generates/suffers much stronger interference to/from cellular base stations (BSs) over a much larger region in its uplink/downlink communication, as compared to the terrestrial users. As a result, conventional inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) techniques catered for terrestrial networks become ineffective in mitigating the more severe UAV-induced interference. To d…
