In recent years, the nonlinear 3D magnetohydrodynamic codes JOREK, M3D-C$^1$ and NIMROD developed the capability of modelling realistic 3D vertical displacement events (VDEs) including resistive walls. In this paper, a comprehensive 3D VDE benchmark is presented between these state of the art codes. The simulated case is based on an experimental NSTX plasma but with a simplified rectangular wall. In spite of pronounced differences between physics models and numerical methods, the comparison shows very good agreement in the relevant quantities used to characterize disruptions such as the 3D wall forces and energy decay. This benchmark does not only bring confidence regarding the use of the mentioned codes for disruption studies, but also shows differences with respect to the used models (e.g. reduced versus full MHD models). The simulations show important 3D features for a NSTX plasma such as the self-consistent evolution of the halo current and the origin of the wall forces. In contrast to other reduced MHD models based on an ordering in the aspect ratio, the ansatz based JOREK reduced MHD model allows capturing the 3D dynamics even in the spherical tokamak limit considered here.
A benchmark exercise for the modeling of vertical displacement events (VDEs) is presented and applied to the 3D nonlinear magneto-hydrodynamic codes M3D-C$^1$, JOREK and NIMROD. The simulations are based on a vertically unstable NSTX equilibrium enclosed by an axisymmetric resistive wall with rectangular cross section. A linear dependence of the linear VDE growth rates on the resistivity of the wall is recovered for sufficiently large wall conductivity and small temperatures in the open field line region. The benchmark results show good agreement between the VDE growth rates obtained from line…
In preparation for extending the JOREK nonlinear MHD code to stellarators, a hierarchy of stellarator-capable reduced and full MHD models has been derived and tested. The derivation was presented at the EFTC 2019 conference. Continuing this line of work, we have implemented the reduced MHD model (arXiv:1907.12486) as well as an alternative model which was newly derived using a different set of projection operators for obtaining the scalar momentum equations from the full MHD vector momentum equation. With the new operators, the reduced model matches the standard JOREK reduced models for tokama…
A collisional-radiative non-equilibrium impurity treatment for JOREK 3D nonlinear magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations has been developed. The impurities are represented by super-particles flowing along the fluid velocity field lines, while ionizing and recombining independently according to ADAS data and local fluid density and temperature. The non-equilibrium impurity contributions are then projected back to the fluid field for self-consistent time evolution. A 2D test case is used to compare the new non-equilibrium impurity model against previous Coronal Equilibrium (CE) impurity treatmen…
The extended-MHD NIMROD code [C.R. Sovinec and J.R. King, J. Comput. Phys. 229, 5803 (2010)] is verified against the ideal-MHD ELITE code [H.R. Wilson et al. Phys. Plasmas 9, 1277 (2002)] on a diverted tokamak discharge. When the NIMROD model complexity is increased incrementally, resistive and first-order finite-Larmour radius effects are destabilizing and stabilizing, respectively. The full result is compared to local analytic calculations which are found to overpredict both the resistive destabilization and drift stabilization in comparison to the NIMROD computations.
3D free boundary equilibrium computations have recently been used to model external kinks and edge harmonic oscillations (EHOs), comparing with linear MHD stability codes, and nonlinear analytic theory [Kleiner et al, PPCF 61 084005 (2019)]. In this study, results of the VMEC equilibrium code are compared further with nonlinear reduced MHD simulations, using the JOREK code. The purpose of this investigation is to understand the extent to which the modelling approaches agree, and identify the important physical effects which can modify the dynamics. For the simulated external kink, which is dom…
Toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) are gap modes induced by the toroidicity of tokamak plasmas in absence of continuum damping. They can be excited by energetic particles (EPs) when the EP drive exceeds other dampings. A TAE benchmark case, which was proposed by the International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) group, is studied in this work. Numerical calculations of linear growth of TAEs driven by EPs in a circular-shaped, large aspect ratio tokamak have been performed using the Hybrid Kinetic-MHD (HK-MHD) model implemented in the NIMROD code. This HK-MHD model couples a delta f particle-in-c…
The extended-MHD NIMROD code [C.R. Sovinec and J.R. King, J. Comput. Phys. 229, 5803 (2010)] models broadband-MHD activity from a reconstruction of a quiescent H-mode shot on the DIII-D tokamak [J. L. Luxon, Nucl. Fusion 42, 614 (2002)]. Computations with the reconstructed toroidal and poloidal ion flows exhibit low-n perturbations (n=1-5) that grow and saturate into a turbulent-like MHD state. The workflow used to project the reconstructed state onto the NIMROD basis functions re-solves the Grad-Shafranov equation and extrapolates profiles to include scrape-off-layer currents. Evaluation of t…
Energetic particle (EP) driven instabilities will be of strongly increased relevance in future burning plasmas as the EP pressure will be very large compared to the thermal plasma. Understanding the interaction of EPs and bulk plasma is crucial for developing next-generation fusion devices. In this work, the JOREK MHD code is extended to allow for the simulation of EP instabilities at high EP pressures using realistic plasma and EP parameter in a full-f formulation with anisotropic pressure coupling to the bluid background. The code is first benchmarked linearly for the ITPA-TAE as well as the…
In order to contribute to the understanding of runaway electron generation mechanisms during tokamak disruptions, a test particle tracker is introduced in the JOREK 3D non-linear MHD code, able to compute both full and guiding center relativistic orbits. Tests of the module show good conservation of the invariants of motion and consistency between full orbit and guiding center solutions. A first application is presented where test electron confinement properties in a JET massive gas injection-triggered disruption simulation are investigated. It is found that electron populations initialised be…
The dynamics of large scale plasma instabilities can strongly be influenced by the mutual interaction with currents flowing in conducting vessel structures. Especially eddy currents caused by time-varying magnetic perturbations and halo currents flowing directly from the plasma into the walls are important. The relevance of a resistive wall model is directly evident for Resistive Wall Modes (RWMs) or Vertical Displacement Events (VDEs). However, also the linear and non-linear properties of most other large-scale instabilities may be influenced significantly by the interaction with currents in …
The JOREK extended magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) code is a widely used simulation code for studying the non-linear dynamics of large-scale instabilities in divertor tokamak plasmas. Due to the large scale-separation intrinsic to these phenomena both in space and time, the computational costs for simulations in realistic geometry and with realistic parameters can be very high, motivating the investment of considerable effort for optimization. In this article, a set of developments regarding the JOREK solver and preconditioner is described, which lead to overall significant benefits for large produ…
Linear simulations of toriodal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) driven by energetic particles (EPs) on EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak) are performed using the hybrid-kinetic MHD (HK-MHD) model implemented in NIMROD code. The EAST equilibrium is reconstructed using the EFIT code based on experimental measurement. The "slowing down" distribution is adopted for modeling the equilibrium distribution of the energetic ions from the deuterium neutral beam injection on EAST. The frequency, the dominant poloidal mode number, the radial location and the detailed 2D mode structure of the TAE…

For the simulation of disruptions in tokamak fusion plasmas, a fluid model describing the evolution of relativistic runaway electrons and their interaction with the background plasma is presented. The overall aim of the model is to self-consistently describe the nonlinear coupled evolution of runaway electrons (REs) and plasma instabilities during disruptions. In this model, the runaway electrons are considered as a separate fluid species in which the initial seed is generated through the Dreicer source, which eventually grows by the avalanche mechanism (further relevant source mechanisms can …
Implementation and verification of the avalanche source in a 3D full-f particle-in-cell model of relativistic electrons for studies of tokamak disruptions
JOREK is a massively parallel fully implicit non-linear extended MHD code for realistic tokamak X-point plasmas. It has become a widely used versatile code for studying large-scale plasma instabilities and their control developed in an international community. This article gives a comprehensive overview of the physics models implemented, numerical methods applied for solving the equations and physics studies performed with the code. A dedicated section highlights some of the verification work done for the code. A hierarchy of different physics models is available including a free boundary and …
We use the non-linear reduced-MHD code JOREK to study ELMs in the geometry of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. Toroidal mode numbers, poloidal filament sizes, and radial propagation speeds of filaments into the scrape-off layer are in good agreement with observations for type-I ELMs in ASDEX Upgrade. The observed instabilities exhibit a localization of perturbations which is compatible with the "solitary magnetic perturbations" recently discovered in ASDEX Upgrade [R.Wenninger et.al., Solitary Magnetic Perturbations at the ELM Onset, Nucl.Fusion, submitted]. This localization can only be described i…
Extended-MHD modeling of DIII-D tokamak [J. L. Luxon, Nucl. Fusion 42, 614 (2002)] quiescent H-mode (QH-mode) discharges with nonlinear NIMROD [C. R. Sovinec et al., J. Comput. Phys. 195, 355 (2004)] simulations saturates into a turbulent state but does not saturate when the steady-state flow inferred from measurements is not included. This is consistent with the experimental observations of the quiescent regime on DIII-D. The simulation with flow develops into a saturated turbulent state where the n=1 and 2 toroidal modes become dominant through an inverse cascade. Each mode in the range of n…
The development of small- and no-ELM regimes for ITER is a high priority topic due to the risks associated to type-I ELMs. By considering non-linear extended MHD simulations of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak with the JOREK code, we probe a regime that avoids type-I ELMs completely provided that the separatrix density is high enough. The dynamics of the pedestal in this regime are observed to be qualitatively similar to the so-called quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regime in several ways. Repetitive type-I ELMs are substituted by roughly constant levels of outwards transport caused by peeling-balloon…
Reduced magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations are used to study the nonlinear dynamics of external kinks in a quasi-axisymmetric (QA) stellarator with varying fractions of external rotational transform. The large bootstrap currents associated with high beta plasmas may make QA configurations susceptible to low n external modes, limiting their operational space. The violence of the nonlinear dynamics, and, in particular, when these modes lead to a disruption, is not yet understood. In this paper, the nonlinear phase of external kinks in an unstable QA configuration with an edge safety factor belo…
