Reduced magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations are used to study the nonlinear dynamics of external kinks in a quasi-axisymmetric (QA) stellarator with varying fractions of external rotational transform. The large bootstrap currents associated with high beta plasmas may make QA configurations susceptible to low n external modes, limiting their operational space. The violence of the nonlinear dynamics, and, in particular, when these modes lead to a disruption, is not yet understood. In this paper, the nonlinear phase of external kinks in an unstable QA configuration with an edge safety factor below two is simulated. An axisymmetric approximation of this stellarator is constructed in the nonlinear MHD code, JOREK, capturing the influence of the external rotational transform. The use of this approximation for the considered stellarator is validated by comparing the linear dynamics against the linear viscoresistive MHD code, CASTOR3D. The nonlinear dynamics of this stellarator approximation are compared with an equivalent tokamak to understand the influence of a relatively small external rotational transform. While the external rotational transform does have a stabilising influence on the MHD activity, it remains violent. To explore the first order influence of a larger external rotational transform, this equilibrium parameter is artificially increased for the considered stellarator, reducing the effective plasma current. The violence of the kink instability is quantified, and shown to reduce with the increasing external rotational transform. At the same time, the external kink triggers internal modes that exacerbate the loss in confinement during the nonlinear phase, such that it remains large over much of the parameter space. It is only with a significant fraction of external rotational transform that these subsequent modes are stabilised.
It is demonstrated that finite-pressure, approximately quasi-axisymmetric stellarator equilibria can be directly constructed (without numerical optimization) via perturbations of given axisymmetric equilibria. The size of such perturbations is measured in two ways, via the fractional external rotation and, alternatively, via the relative magnetic field strength, i.e. the average size of the perturbed magnetic field, divided by the unperturbed field strength. It is found that significant fractional external rotational transform can be generated by quasi-axisymmetric perturbations, with a simila…

The capability to model the nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) evolution of stellarator plasmas is developed by extending the M3D-$C^1$ code to allow non-axisymmetric domain geometry. We introduce a set of logical coordinates, in which the computational domain is axisymmetric, to utilize the existing finite-element framework of M3D-$C^1$. A $C^1$ coordinate mapping connects the logical domain to the non-axisymmetric physical domain, where we use the M3D-$C^1$ extended MHD models essentially without modifications. We present several numerical verifications on the implementation of this approac…
The nonlinear gyrokinetic code GS2 has been extended to treat non-axisymmetric stellarator geometry. Electromagnetic perturbations and multiple trapped particle regions are allowed. Here, linear, collisionless, electrostatic simulations of the quasi-axisymmetric, three-field period National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX) design QAS3-C82 have been successfully benchmarked against the eigenvalue code FULL. Quantitatively, the linear stability calculations of GS2 and FULL agree to within ~10%.
The usage of permanent magnets to shape the confining magnetic field of a stellarator has the potential to reduce or eliminate the need for non-planar coils. As a proof-of-concept for this idea, we have developed a procedure for designing an array of cubic permanent magnets that works in tandem with a set of toroidal-field coils to confine a stellarator plasma. All of the magnets in the design are constrained to have identical geometry and one of three polarization types in order to simplify fabrication while still producing sufficient field accuracy. We present some of the key steps leading t…

The global gyrokinetic toroidal code (GTC) has been recently upgraded to do simulations in non-axisymmetric equilibrium configuration, such as stellarators. Linear simulation of ion temperature gradient (ITG) driven instabilities has been done in Wendelstein7-X (W7-X) and Large Helical Device (LHD) stellarators using GTC. Several results are discussed to study characteristics of ITG in stellarators, including toroidal grids convergence, nmodes number convergence, poloidal and parallel spectrums, and electrostatic potential mode structure on flux surface.
Here we present first results simulating plasma filaments in non-axisymmetric geometries, using a fluid turbulence extension of the \boutxx~framework. This is made possible by the implementation of the Flux Coordinate Independent scheme for parallel derivatives, an extension of the metric tensor components which allows them to vary in three dimensions, and development of grid generation. Tests have been performed to confirm that the extension to three dimensional metric tensors does not compromise the accuracy and stability of the associated numerical operators. Recent changes to the FCI grid …
This paper deals with the design of the stellarator field with the simple coil set. In order to realize the stellarator field by the simple coil set, the tilted toroidal field coil uses for creating the rotational transform. Sixteen tilted TF coils create the small radial field and large vertical field. With reducing the vertical field of the tilted toroidal field coil by the axisymmetric poloidal field coil, the stellarator field can be made. The formation of clear and nested flux surfaces is confirmed, and the rotational transform is proportional to the tilting angle of the toroidal field co…
In this work, the role which three-dimensional shaping plays in the generation of rotational transform in toroidal magnetically confinement devices is explored. The susceptance matrix as defined by Strand & Houlberg (2001) is presented and compared to simulations of three dimensional MHD equilibria. The dependence of the edge rotational transform on axisymmetric shaping is briefly explored. It is then shown how simple three dimensional shaping can drive rotational transform in a simply shaped stellarator. It is found that modes with high poloidal mode number drive edge transform with little ef…

Flux tube simulations of plasma turbulence in stellarators and tokamaks typically employ coordinates which are aligned with the magnetic field lines. Anisotropic turbulent fluctuations can be represented in such field-aligned coordinates very efficiently, but the resulting non-trivial boundary conditions involve all three spatial directions, and must be handled with care. The standard "twist-and-shift" formulation of the boundary conditions [Beer, Cowley, Hammett \textit{Phys. Plasmas} \textbf{2}, 2687 (1995)] was derived assuming axisymmetry and is widely used because it is efficient, as long…
Sawtooth-like core electron temperature crashes have been observed in W7-X experiments with electron cyclotron current drive. We present nonlinear single-fluid magnetohydrodynamic simulations of this phenomenon using the newly developed stellarator modeling capability of the M3D-$C^1$ code. The near-axis current drive gives rise to two $ι=1$ resonances in the equilibrium rotational transform profile so that two consecutive $(1,1)$ internal kink modes are seen in the simulations. A small-amplitude crash at the inner resonance occurs first, which may correspond to the sawtooth precursors observe…
The stability of the ion-temperature gradient mode in quasisymmetric stellarators is assessed. This is performed using a set of analytical estimates together with linear gyrokinetic simulations. The peak growth rates, their corresponding real frequencies and wave-vectors are identified. A comparison is made between a first-order near-axis expansion model and eleven realistic designs obtained using numerical optimization methods. It is found that while the near-axis expansion is able to replicate the growth rates, real frequencies and perpendicular wave-vector at the inner core (both using simp…
Impurities cause radiation losses and plasma dilution, and in stellarator plasmas the neoclassical ambipolar radial electric field is often unfavorable for avoiding strong impurity peaking. In this work we use a new continuum drift-kinetic solver, the SFINCS code (the Stellarator Fokker-Planck Iterative Neoclassical Conservative Solver) [M. Landreman et al., Phys. Plasmas 21 (2014) 042503] which employs the full linearized Fokker-Planck-Landau operator, to calculate neoclassical impurity transport coefficients for a Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) magnetic configuration. We compare SFINCS calculations …
Results of a three-dimensional, flux-driven, electrostatic, global, two-fluid turbulence simulation for a 5-field period stellarator with an island divertor are presented. The numerical simulation is carried out with the GBS code, recently extended to simulate plasma turbulence in non-axisymmetric magnetic equilibria. The vacuum magnetic field used in the simulation is generated with the theory of Dommaschk potentials, and describes a configuration with a central region of nested flux surfaces, surrounded by a chain of magnetic islands, similarly to the diverted configurations of W7-X. The hea…
A method is demonstrated to rapidly calculate the shapes and properties of quasi-axisymmetric and quasi-helically symmetric stellarators. In this approach, optimization is applied to the equations of magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and quasisymmetry, expanded in the small distance from the magnetic axis, as formulated by Garren and Boozer [Phys. Fluids B, 3, 2805 (1991)]. Due to the reduction of the equations by the expansion, the computational cost is significantly reduced, to times on the order of 1 cpu-second, enabling wide and high-resolution scans over parameter space. In contrast to trad…
To identify under what conditions guiding-centre or full-orbit tracing should be used, an estimation of the spatial variation of the magnetic field is proposed, not only taking into account gradient and curvature terms but also parallel currents and the local shearing of field-lines. The criterion is derived for general three-dimensional magnetic equilibria including stellarator plasmas. Details are provided on how to implement it in cylindrical coordinates, and in flux coordinates that rely on the geometric toroidal angle. A means of switching between guiding-centre and full-orbit equations a…
Magnetoacoustic waves in solar magnetic flux tubes may be affected by the presence of background rotational flows. Here, we investigate the behaviour of $m=0$ and $m=\pm 1$ modes of a magnetic flux tube in the presence of linear background rotational flows embedded in a photospheric environment. We show that the inclusion of a background rotational flow is found to have little effect on the obtained eigensolutions for the axisymmetric $m=0$ sausage mode. However, solutions for the kink mode are dependent on the location of the flow resonance modified by the slow frequency. A background rotatio…
