An intriguing feature of positive $C_0$-semigroups on function spaces (or more generally on Banach lattices) is that their long-time behaviour is much easier to describe than it is for general semigroups. In particular, the convergence of semigroup operators (strongly or in the operator norm) as time tends to infinity can be characterized by a set of simple spectral and compactness conditions.
In the present paper, we show that similar theorems remain true for the larger class of (uniformly) eventually positive semigroups - which recently arose in the study of various concrete differential equations.
A major step in one of our characterizations is to show a version of the famous Niiro-Sawashima theorem for eventually positive operators. Several proofs for positive operators and semigroups do not work in our setting any longer, necessitating different arguments and giving our approach a distinct flavour.
This paper considers strongly continuous semigroups of operators on Banach lattices which are locally eventually positive, a property that was first investigated in the context of concrete fourth-order evolution equations. We construct a simple example to show that the typical assumptions on the spectrum of the semigroup generator considered currently in the literature are far from necessary in the more general setting of local eventual positivity. Under minimal additional assumptions, we obtain results on the asymptotic behaviour of orbits, as well as necessary conditions on the peripheral po…
We develop a systematic theory of eventually positive semigroups of linear operators mainly on spaces of continuous functions. By eventually positive we mean that for every positive initial condition the solution to the corresponding Cauchy problem is positive for large enough time. Characterisations of such semigroups are given by means of resolvent properties of the generator and Perron--Frobenius type spectral conditions. We apply these characterisations to prove eventual positivity of several examples of semigroups including some generated by fourth order elliptic operators and a delay dif…
We present a new and very short proof of the fact that, for positive $C_0$-semigroups on spaces of continuous functions, the spectral and the growth bound coincide. Our argument, inspired by an idea of Vogt, makes the role of the underlying space completely transparent and also works if the space does not contain the constant functions - a situation in which all earlier proofs become technically quite involved. We also show how the argument can be adapted to yield the same result for semigroups that are only eventually positive rather than positive.
We consider eventually positive operator semigroups and study the question whether their eventual positivity is preserved by bounded perturbations of the generator or not. We demonstrate that eventual positivity is not stable with respect to large positive perturbation and that certain versions of eventual positivity react quite sensitively to small positive perturbations. In particular we show that if eventual positivity is preserved under arbitrary positive perturbations of the generator, then the semigroup is positive. We then provide sufficient conditions for a positive perturbation to pre…
We perform an in-depth study of some domination and smoothing properties of linear operators and of their role within the theory of eventually positive operator semigroups. On the one hand we prove that, on many important function spaces, they imply compactness properties. On the other hand, we show that these conditions can be omitted in a number of Perron--Frobenius type spectral theorems. We furthermore prove a Kre\uın--Rutman type theorem on the existence of positive eigenvectors and eigenfunctionals under certain eventual positivity conditions.
In this paper, we compare several Cesàro and Kreiss type boundedness conditions for a $C_0$-semigroup on a Banach space and we show that those conditions are all equivalent for a positive semigroup on a Banach lattice. Furthermore, we give an estimate of the growth rate of a Kreiss bounded and eventually positive $C_0$-semigroup $(T_t)_{t\ge 0}$ on certain Banach lattices $X$. We prove that if $X$ is an $L^p$-space, $1<p<+\infty$, then $\|T_t\| = \mathcal{O}\left(t/\log(t)^{\max(1/p,1/p')}\right)$ and if $X$ is an $(\text{AL})$ or $(\text{AM})$-space, then $\|T_t\|=\mathcal{O}(t^{1-ε})$ for so…
We develop a theory of eventually positive $C_0$-semigroups on Banach lattices, that is, of semigroups for which, for every positive initial value, the solution of the corresponding Cauchy problem becomes positive for large times. We give characterisations of such semigroups by means of spectral and resolvent properties of the corresponding generators, complementing existing results on spaces of continuous functions. This enables us to treat a range of new examples including the square of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions, the bi-Laplacian on $L^p$-spaces, the Dirichlet-to-Neuma…
We show that, for the $C_0$-semigroups of scalar type spectral operators, a well-known necessary condition for the generation of eventually norm-continuous $C_0$-semigroups, formulated exclusively in terms of the location of the spectrum of the semigroup's generator in the complex plane, is also sufficient and, in fact, characterizes the generators of immediately norm-continuous such semigroups. Combining characterizations of the immediate differentiability and the Gevrey ultradifferentiability of scalar type spectral $C_0$-semigroups with the generation theorem, found earlier by the author, w…
Suppose that T_t is a symmetric diffusion semigroup on L^2(X) and consider its tensor product extension to the Bochner space L^p(X,B), where B belongs to a certain broad class of UMD spaces. We prove a vector-valued version of the Hopf--Dunford--Schwartz ergodic theorem and show that this extends to a maximal theorem for analytic continuations of the semigroup's extension to L^p(X,B). As an application, we show that such continuations exhibit pointwise convergence.
We prove that a weakly ergodic, eventually strong Feller semigroup on the space of measures on a Polish space converges strongly to a projection onto its fixed space.
The present paper is devoted to semigroups of nonexpansive mappings on metric spaces of nonpositive curvature. We show that the Mosco convergence of a sequence of convex lsc functions implies convergence of the corresponding resolvents and convergence of the gradient flow semigroups. This extends the classical results of Attouch, Brezis and Pazy into spaces with no linear structure. The same method can be further used to show the convergence of semigroups on a sequence of spaces, which solves a problem of [Kuwae and Shioya, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 2008].
In this work we construct certain general bundles $<\mathfrak{M},ρ,X>$ and $<\mathfrak{B},η,X>$ of Hausdorff locally convex spaces associated with a given Banach bundle $<\mathfrak{E},π,X>$. Then we present conditions ensuring the existence of bounded sections $\mathcal{U}\in Γ^{x_{\infty}}(ρ)$ and $\mathcal{P}\in Γ^{x_{\infty}}(η)$ both continuous at a point $x_{\infty}\in X$, such that $\mathcal{U}(x)$ is a $C_{0}-$semigroup of contractions on $\mathfrak{E}_{x}$ and $\mathcal{P}(x)$ is a spectral projector of the infinitesimal generator of the semigroup $\mathcal{U}(x)$, for every $x\in X$.
For stochastic $C_0$-semigroups on $L^1$-spaces there is wealth of results that show strong convergence to an equilibrium as $t \to \infty$, given that the semigroup contains a partial integral operator. This has plenty of applications to transport equations and in mathematical biology. However, up to now partial integral operators do not play a prominent role in theorems which yield uniform convergence of the semigroup rather than only strong convergence. In this article we prove that, for irreducible stochastic semigroups, uniform convergence to an equilibrium is actually equivalent to being…
We stretch the spectral bound equal growth bound condition along with a generalized Lyapunov stability theorem, known to hold for $C_0$-semigroups of normal operators on complex Hilbert spaces, to $C_0$-semigroups of scalar type spectral operators on complex Banach spaces. For such semigroups, we obtain exponential estimates with the best stability constants. We also extend to a Banach space setting a celebrated characterization of uniform exponential stability for $C_0$-semigroups on complex Hilbert spaces and thereby acquire a characterization of uniform exponential stability for scalar type…
We study a classification of the kappa-times integrated semigroups (for kappa>0) by the (uniform) rate of convergence at the origin: $\|S(t)\|=O(t^α)$, $0\leqα\leqκ$. By an improved generation theorem we characterize this behaviour by Hille-Yosida type estimates. Then we consider integrated semigroups with holomorphic extension and characterize the convergence at the origin, as well as the existence of boundary values, by estimates of the associated holomorphic semigroup. Different examples illustrate these results. The particular case $α=κ$, which corresponds to the notions of Riesz means or …
We give a new and very short proof of a theorem of Greiner asserting that a positive and contractive $C_0$-semigroup on an $L^p$-space is strongly convergent in case that it has a strictly positive fixed point and contains an integral operator. Our proof is a streamlined version of a much more general approach to the asymptotic theory of positive semigroups developed recently by the authors. Under the assumptions of Greiner's theorem, this approach becomes particularly elegant and simple. We also give an outlook on several generalisations of this result.
We present new conditions for semigroups of positive operators to converge strongly as time tends to infinity. Our proofs are based on a novel approach combining the well-known splitting theorem by Jacobs, de Leeuw and Glicksberg with a purely algebraic result about positive group representations. Thus we obtain convergence theorems not only for one-parameter semigroups but for a much larger class of semigroup representations. Our results allow for a unified treatment of various theorems from the literature that, under technical assumptions, a bounded positive $C_0$-semigroup containing or dom…
Consider a $C_0$-semigroup $(e^{tA})_{t \ge 0}$ on a function space or, more generally, on a Banach lattice $E$. We prove a sufficient criterion for the operators $e^{tA}$ to be positive for all sufficiently large times $t$, while the semigroup itself might not be positive. This complements recently established criteria for the individual orbits of the semigroup to become eventually positive for all positive initial values. We apply our main result to study the qualitative behaviour of the solutions to various partial differential equations.
For an increasing sequence $(T_n)$ of one-parameter semigroups of sub Markovian kernel operators over a Polish space, we study the limit semigroup and prove sufficient conditions for it to be strongly Feller. In particular, we show that the strong Feller property carries over from the approximating semigroups to the limit semigroup if the resolvent of the latter maps the constant 1 function to a continuous function. This is instrumental in the study of elliptic operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with unbounded coefficients: our abstract result enables us to assign a semigroup to such an operator and …
We extend the Barles-Perthame procedure of semi-relaxed limits of viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations of the type f - lambda H f = h. The convergence result allows for equations on a `converging sequence of spaces' as well as Hamilton-equations written in terms of two equations in terms of operators H_\dagger and H_\dagger that serve as natural upper and lower bounds for the `true' operator H. In the process, we establish a strong relation between non-linear pseudo-resolvents and viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. As a consequence we derive a convergence result for …
Chernoff approximations to strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups give solutions to a wide class of differential equations. This paper studies the rate of convergence of the Chernoff approximations. We provide simple natural examples for which the convergence is arbitrary fast, is arbitrary slow, and holds in the strong operator topology but does not hold in the norm operator topology. We also prove a general theorem that gives an upper estimate for the speed of decay of the norm of the residual term of the Chernoff approximations. The result is applied to one-dimensional parabolic diffe…
A theorem of Siebert asserts that if a sequence of semigroups of probability measures on a Lie group G is weakly convergent to a semigroup of the same type, then the corresponding generating functionals are convergent in the weak operator topology in every unitary representation of the group. The aim of this note is to give a simple proof of the theorem and propose some improvements. In particular, we completely avoid employing unitary representations by showing simply that under the same hypothesis the generating functionals are convergent pointwise on C^2(G). As a corollary, the above thesis o…
For a sequence of uniformly bounded, degenerate semigroups on a Hilbert space, we compare various types of convergences to a limit semigroup. Among others, we show that convergence of the semigroups, or of the resolvents of the generators, in the weak operator topology, in the strong operator topology or in certain integral norms are equivalent under certain natural assumptions which are frequently met in applications.
We provide simple and constructive proofs of Harris-type theorems on the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium and the speed of equilibration of discrete-time and continuous-time stochastic semigroups. Our results apply both to cases where the relaxation speed is exponential (also called geometric) and to those with no spectral gap, with non-exponential speeds (also called subgeometric). We give constructive estimates in the subgeometric case and discrete-time statements which seem both to be new. The method of proof also differs from previous works, based on semigroup and interpolation a…
We give a simple and direct treatment of the strong convergence of quantum random walks to quantum stochastic operator cocycles, via the semigroup decomposition of such cocycles. Our approach also delivers convergence of the pointwise product of quantum random walks to the quantum stochastic Trotter product of the respective limit cocycles, thereby revealing the algebraic structure of the limiting procedure. The repeated quantum interactions model is shown to fit nicely into the convergence scheme described.
In a recent article, Arendt and ter Elst have shown that every sectorial form is in a natural way associated with the generator of an analytic strongly continuous semigroup, even if the form fails to be closable. As an intermediate step they have introduced so-called j-elliptic forms, which generalises the concept of elliptic forms in the sense of Lions. We push their analysis forward in that we discuss some perturbation and convergence results for semigroups associated with j-elliptic forms. In particular, we study convergence with respect to the trace norm or other Schatten norms. We apply o…
In this paper, using Kronecker's theorem, we discuss the set of common fixed points of an n-parameter continuous semigroup of mappings. We also discuss convergence theorems to a common fixed point of an n-parameter nonexpansive semigroup.
We revise the operator-norm convergence of the Trotter product formula for a pair {A,B} of generators of semigroups on a Banach space. Operator-norm convergence holds true if the dominating operator A generates a holomorphic contraction semigroup and B is a A-infinitesimally small generator of a contraction semigroup, in particular, if B is a bounded operator. Inspired by studies of evolution semigroups it is shown in the present paper that the operator-norm convergence generally fails even for bounded operators B if A is not a holomorphic generator. Moreover, it is shown that operator norm co…
If $(T_t)$ is a semigroup of Markov operators on an $L^1$-space that admits a non-trivial lower bound, then a well-known theorem of Lasota and Yorke asserts that the semigroup is strongly convergent as $t \to \infty$. In this article we generalise and improve this result in several respects. First, we give a new and very simple proof for the fact that the same conclusion also holds if the semigroup is merely assumed to be bounded instead of Markov. As a main result we then prove a version of this theorem for semigroups which only admit certain individual lower bounds. Moreover, we generalise a…
We systematize and generalize recent results of Gerlach and Glück on the strong convergence and spectral theory of bounded (positive) operator semigroups $(T_s)_{s\in S}$ on Banach spaces (lattices). (Here, $S$ can be an arbitrary commutative semigroup, and no topological assumptions neither on $S$ nor on its representation are required.) To this aim, we introduce the "semigroup at infinity" and give useful criteria ensuring that the well-known Jacobs--de Leeuw--Glicksberg splitting theory can be applied to it. Next, we confine these abstract results to positive semigroups on Banach lattices w…
Motivated by structured parasite populations in aquaculture we consider a class of size-structured population models, where individuals may be recruited into the population with distributed states at birth. The mathematical model which describes the evolution of such a population is a first-order nonlinear partial integro-differential equation of hyperbolic type. First, we use positive perturbation arguments and utilise results from the spectral theory of semigroups to establish conditions for the existence of a positive equilibrium solution of our model. Then, we formulate conditions that gua…
It is shown that for a certain class of the Kato functions the Trotter-Kato product formulae converge in Dixmier ideal C 1,$\infty$ in topology, which is defined by the $\times$ 1,$\infty$-norm. Moreover, the rate of convergence in this topology inherits the error-bound estimate for the corresponding operator-norm convergence. 1 since [24], [14]. Note that a subtle point of this program is the question about the rate of convergence in the corresponding topology. Since the limit of the Trotter-Kato product formula is a strongly continuous semigroup, for the von Neumann-Schatten ideals this topo…
The notion of equivalence classes of generators of one-parameter semigroups based on the convergence of the Dyson expansion can be traced back to the seminal work of Hille and Phillips, who in Chapter XIII of the 1957 edition of their Functional Analysis monograph, developed the theory in minute detail. Following their approach of regarding the Dyson expansion as a central object, in the first part of this paper we examine a general framework for perturbation of generators relative to the Schatten-von Neumann ideals on Hilbert spaces. This allows us to develop a graded family of equivalence re…
We study a nonlinear semigroup associated to a nonexpansive mapping on a Hadamard space and establish its weak convergence to a fixed point. A discrete-time counterpart of such a semigroup, the proximal point algorithm, turns out to have the same asymptotic behavior. This complements several results in the literature -- both classical and more recent ones. As an application, we obtain a new approach to heat flows in singular spaces for discrete, as well as continuous times.
We consider positive operator semigroups on ordered Banach spac\-es and study the relation of their long time behaviour to two different domination properties. First, we analyse under which conditions almost periodicity and mean ergodicity of a semigroup $\mathcal{T}$ are inherited by other semigroups which are asymptotically dominated by $\mathcal{T}$. Then, we consider semigroups whose orbits asymptotically dominate a positive vector and show that this assumption is often sufficient to conclude strong convergence of the semigroup as time tends to infinity. Our theorems are applicable to time…
In this paper we prove weighted $\ell^p$-inequalities for variation and oscillation operators defined by semigroups of operators associated with discrete Jacobi operators. Also, we establish that certain maximal operators involving sums of differences of discrete Jacobi semigroups are bounded on weighted $\ell^p$-spaces. $\ell^p$-boundedness properties for the considered operators provide information about the convergence of the semigroup of operators defining them.
The paper deals with the long-term behavior of positive operator semigroups on spaces of bounded functions and of signed measures, which have applications to parabolic equations with unbounded coefficients and to stochastic analysis. The main results are a Tauberian type theorem characterizing the convergence to equilibrium of strongly Feller semigroups and a generalization of a classical convergence theorem of Doob. None of these results requires any kind of time regularity of the semigroup.
Inspired by topological Wiener-Wintner theorems we study the mean ergodicity of amenable semigroups of Markov operators on $C(K)$ and show the connection to the convergence of strong and weak ergodic nets. The results are then used to characterize mean ergodicity of Koopman semigroups corresponding to skew product actions on compact group extensions.
We present a form convergence theorem for sequences of sectorial forms and their associated semigroups in a complex Hilbert space. Roughly speaking, the approximating forms $a_n$ are all `bounded below' by the limiting form $a$, but in contrast to the previous literature there is no monotonicity hypothesis on the sequence. Moreover, the forms are not supposed to be closed or densely defined. For a sectorial form one obtains an associated linear relation, whose negative generates a degenerate strongly continuous semigroup of linear operators. Our hypotheses on the sequence of forms imply strong…
The paper is devoted to a linear dynamics for non-autonomous perturbation of the Gibbs semigroup on a separable Hilbert space. It is shown that evolution family {U(t, s)} 0$\le$s$\le$t solving the non-autonomous Cauchy problem can be approximated in the trace-norm topology by product formulae. The rate of convergence of product formulae approximants {U n (t, s)} {0$\le$s$\le$t,n$\ge$1} to the solution operator {U(t, s)} {0$\le$s$\le$t} is also established.

Similar to the theory of finite Markov chains it is shown that in a Banach space $X$ ordered by a closed cone $K$ with nonempty interior int($K$) a power bounded positive operator $A$ with compact power such that its trajectories for positive vectors eventually flow into int($K$), defines a "limit distribution", i.e. its adjoint operator has a unique fixed point in the dual cone. Moreover, the sequence (A^n) converges with respect to the strong operator topology and for each functional $f\in X'$ the sequence $((A^*)^n(f))$ converges with respect to the weak*-topology (Theorem 5). If a positive…
In this paper, we establish $\mathcal B$-valued variational inequalities for differential operators, ergodic averages and symmetric diffusion semigroups under the condition that Banach space $\mathcal B$ has martingale cotype property. These results generalize, on the one hand Pisier and Xu's result on the variational inequalities for $\mathcal B$-valued martingales, on the other hand many classical variational inequalities in harmonic analysis and ergodic theory. Moreover, we show that Rademacher cotype $q$ is necessary for the $\mathcal B$-valued $q$-variational inequalities. As applications…
