Let $(X,G,Φ)$ be a dynamical system, where $X$ is compact Hausdorff space, and $G$ is a countable discrete group. We investigate shadowing property and mixing between subshifts and general dynamical systems. For the shadowing property, fix some finite subset $S\subset G$. We prove that if $X$ is totally disconnected, then $Φ$ has $S$-shadowing property if and only if $(X,G,Φ)$ is conjugate to an inverse limit of a sequence of shifts of finite type which satisfies Mittag-Leffler condition. Also, suppose that $X$ is metric space (may be not totally disconnected), we prove that if $Φ$ has $S$-shadowing property, then $(X,G,Φ)$ is a factor of an inverse limit of a sequence of shifts of finite type by a factor map which almost lifts pseudo-orbit for $S$.
On the other hand, let property $P$ be one of the following property: transitivity, minimal, totally transitivity, weakly mixing, mixing, and specification property. We prove that if $X$ is totally disconnected, then $Φ$ has property $P$ if and only if $(X,G,Φ)$ is conjugate to an inverse limit of an inverse system that consists of subshifts with property $P$ which satisfies Mittag-Leffler condition. Also, for the case of metric space (may be not totally disconnected), if property $P$ is not minimal or specification property, we prove that $Φ$ has property $P$ if and only if $(X,G,Φ)$ is a factor of an inverse limit of a sequence of subshifts with property $P$ which satisfies Mittag-Leffler condition.

We show that a non-wandering dynamical system with the shadowing property is either equicontinuous or has positive entropy and that in this context uniformly positive entropy is equivalent to weak mixing. We also show that weak mixing together with the shadowing property imply the specification property with a special kind of regularity in tracing (a weaker version of periodic specification property). This in turn implies that the set of ergodic measures supported on the closures of orbits of regularly recurrent points is dense in the space of all invariant measures (in particular, invariant m…

In this paper, we introduce and study notions of average chain transitivity, average chain mixing, total average chain transitivity and almost average shadowing property. We also discuss their interrelations.
Let $G$ be an amenable discrete countable infinite group, $A$ a finite set, and $(μ_g)_{g\in G}$ a family of probability measures on $A$ such that $\inf_{g\in G}\min_{a\in A}μ_g(a)>0$. It is shown (among other results) that if the Bernoulli shiftwise action of $G$ on the infinite product space $\bigotimes_{g\in G}(A,μ_g)$ is nonsingular and conservative then it is weakly mixing. This answers in positive a question by Z.~Kosloff who proved recently that the conservative Bernoulli $\Bbb Z^d$-actions are ergodic. As a byproduct, we prove a weak version of the pointwise ratio ergodic theorem for n…
In this note, we construct torsion-free countable, amenable, weakly mixing groups, which answer a question of V. Bergelson. Some results related to verbal subgroups and crystallographic groups are also presented.
We show that all non-trivial continuous endomorphisms of the circle group are topologically mixing. We also show that there exists a large infinite class of continuous endomorphisms of any n-dimensional torus group which are topologically mixing. Lastly, we prove that any continuous endomorphism on an abelian polish semigroup (with an identity) can be extended in a natural way to a topologically mixing endomorphism on the countable infinite product of said semigroup. This shows that every countable infinite product of an abelian polish semigroup has a topologically mixing endomorphism and, in …
We study weak mixing of all orders for weakly mixing measure preserving dynamical systems, where the dynamics is given by the action of an abelian second countable topological group which has an invariant measure under the group operation. One of the main technical tools we use is a van der Corput lemma for Hilbert space valued functions on a second countable topological group.
We obtain sufficient conditions under which the limit of a sequence of functions exhibits a particular dynamical behaviour at a point like expansivity, shadowing, mixing, sensitivity and transitivity. We provide examples to show that the set of all expansive, positively expansive and sensitive points are neither open nor closed in general. We also observe that the set of all transitive and mixing points are closed but not open in general. We give examples to show that properties like expansivity, sensitivity, shadowing, transitivity and mixing at a point need not be preserved under uniform con…
We provide a quantification of the uniqueness of Gibbs measure for topologically mixing countable Markov shifts with locally Hölder continuous potentials. Corollaries for speed of convergence for approximation by finite subsystems are also given.
We prove that any strongly mixing action of a countable abelian group on a probability space has higher order mixing properties. This is achieved via introducing and utilizing $\mathcal R$-limits, a notion of convergence which is based on the classical Ramsey Theorem. $\mathcal R$-limits are intrinsically connected with a new combinatorial notion of largeness which is similar to but has stronger properties than the classical notions of uniform density one and IP$^*$. While the main goal of this paper is to establish a $\textit{universal}$ property of strongly mixing actions of countable abelia…
In this paper we study chaotic behavior of actions of a countable discrete group acting on a compact metric space by self-homeomorphisms. For actions of a countable discrete group G, we introduce local weak mixing and Li-Yorke chaos; and prove that local weak mixing implies Li-Yorke chaos if G is infinite, and positive topological entropy implies local weak mixing if G is an infinite countable discrete amenable group. Moreover, when considering a shift of finite type for actions of an infinite countable amenable group G, if the action has positive topological entropy then its homoclinic equiva…
In the present paper our main objective is to extend the notion of $D$-sets in countable amenable groups and to discuss its connection with weak mixing for amenable group actions. Further we prove that *-notions are equivalent in the countable amenable group of polynomials generated by finite fields.
Let $G$ be a countable monoid and let $A$ be an Artinian group (resp. an Artinian module). Let $Σ\subset A^G$ be a closed subshift which is also a subgroup (resp. a submodule) of $A^G$. Suppose that $Γ$ is a finitely generated monoid consisting of pairwise commuting cellular automata $Σ\to Σ$ that are also homomorphisms of groups (resp. homomorphisms of modules) with monoid binary operation given by composition of maps. We show that the valuation action of $Γ$ on $Σ$ satisfies a natural intrinsic shadowing property. Generalizations are also established for families of endomorphisms of admissib…
We study the spectral measures of conservative mixing flows on the 2-torus having one degenerate singularity. We show that, for a sufficiently strong singularity, the spectrum of these flows is typically Lebesgue with infinite multiplicity. For this, we use two main ingredients: 1) a proof of absolute continuity of the maximal spectral type for this class of non-uniformly stretching flows that have an irregular decay of correlations, 2) a geometric criterion that yields infinite Lebesgue multiplicity of the spectrum and that is well adapted to rapidly mixing flows.
A measure preserving action of a countably infinite group Γis called totally ergodic if every infinite subgroup of Γacts ergodically. For example, all mixing and mildly mixing actions are totally ergodic. This note shows that if an action of Γis totally ergodic then there exists a finite normal subgroup N of Γsuch that the stabilizer of almost every point is equal to N. Surprisingly the proof relies on the group theoretic fact (proved by Hall and Kulatilaka as well as by Kargapolov) that every infinite locally finite group contains an infinite abelian subgroup, of which all known proofs rely o…
In this paper the metric on the set of mixing actions of a countable infinite group is introduced so that the corresponding space is complete and separable. Keywords and phrases. Monotilable group, measure preserving transformations, mixing group actions.
For arbitrary closed countable subsets $Z$ of the unit circle examples of topologically mixing operators on Hilbert spaces are given which have a densely spanning set of unimodular eigenvectors with eigenvalues restricted to $Z$. In particular, these operators cannot be ergodic in the Gaussian sense.
The notion of $Δ$-weakly mixing subsets is introduced for countable torsion-free discrete group actions. It is shown that for a finitely generated torsion-free discrete nilpotent group action, positive topological entropy implies the existence of $Δ$-weakly mixing subsets, and while there exists a finitely generated torsion-free discrete solvable group action which has positive topological entropy but without any $Δ$-weakly mixing subsets.
It is shown that for each $N>0$ and for a wide class of Abelian non-compact locally compact second countable groups $G$ including all infinite countable discrete ones and $\Bbb R^{d_1}\times\Bbb Z^{d_2}$ with $d_1,d_2\ge 0$, there exists a weakly mixing probability preserving $G$-action with a homogeneous spectrum of multiplicity $N$.
Let $G$ be a countable discrete sofic group. We define a concept of uniform mixing for measure-preserving $G$-actions and show that it implies completely positive sofic entropy. When $G$ contains an element of infinite order, we use this to produce an uncountable family of pairwise nonisomorphic $G$-actions with completely positive sofic entropy. None of our examples is a factor of a Bernoulli shift.
We begin by giving a new proof of the equivalence between the Liouville property and vanishing of the drift for symmetric random walks with finite first moments on finitely generated groups; a result which was first established by Kaimanovich-Vershik and Karlsson-Ledrappier. We then proceed to prove that the product of the Poisson boundary of any countable measured group $(G,μ)$ with any ergodic $(G,\checkμ)$-space is still ergodic, which in particular yields a new proof of weak mixing for the double Poisson boundary of $(G,μ)$ when $μ$ is symmetric. Finally, we characterize the failure of wea…
We show that a free, ergodic action of $\mathbb{R}$ with (finite) Ratner's property has countable discrete essential centralizer. Moreover we show that such flows are mildly mixing.
We give conditions for the exactness of Rokhlin endomorphisms, apply these to random walks on locally compact, second countable topological groups and obtain that the action on the Poisson boundary of an adapted random walk on such a group is weakly mixing.
For a continuous self-map $f$ on a compact interval $I$ and the induced map $\hat f$ on the space $\mathcal{M}(I)$ of probability measures, we obtain a sharp condition to guarantee that $(I,f)$ is transitive if and only if $(\mathcal{M}(I),\hat f)$ is transitive. We also show that the sensitivity of $(I,f)$ is equivalent to that of $(\mathcal{M}(I),\hat f)$. We prove that $(\mathcal{M}(I),\hat f)$ must have infinite topological entropy for any transitive system $(I,f)$, while there exists a transitive non-autonomous system $(I,f_{0,\infty})$ such that $(\mathcal{M}(I),\hat f_{0,\infty})$ has z…
Let G be a locally compact second countable Abelian group. Given a measure preserving action T of G on a standard probability space, let M(T) denote the set of essential values of the spectral multiplicity function of the Koopman unitary representation of G associated with T. In the case when G is either a discrete countable Abelian group or R^n, n>0, it is shown that the sets of the form {p,q,pq}, {p,q,r,pq,pr,qr,pqr} etc. or any multiplicative (and additive) subsemigroup of N are realizable as M(T) for a weakly mixing G-action T.
Given an infinite countable discrete amenable group $Γ$, we construct explicitly sharply weak mixing nonsingular Poisson $Γ$-actions of each Krieger's type: $III_λ$, for $λ\in[0,1]$, and $II_\infty$. The result is new even for $Γ=\Bbb Z$. As these Poisson suspension actions are over very special dissipative base, we obtain also new examples of sharply weak mixing nonsingular Bernoulli $Γ$-actions and IDPFT systems of each possible Krieger's type.
It is shown that each non-compact locally compact second countable non-(T) group $G$ possesses non-strongly ergodic weakly mixing IDPFT Poisson actions of arbitrary Krieger's type. These actions are amenable if and only if $G$ is amenable. If $G$ has the Haagerup property then (and only then) these actions can be chosen of 0-type. If $G$ is amenable and unimodular then $G$ has weakly mixing Bernoulli actions of any possible Krieger's type.
The group of automorphisms of a symbolic dynamical system is countable, but often very large. For example, for a mixing subshift of finite type, the automorphism group contains isomorphic copies of the free group on two generators and the direct sum of countably many copies of $\mathbb{Z}$. In contrast, the group of automorphisms of a symbolic system of zero entropy seems to be highly constrained. Our main result is that the automorphism group of any minimal subshift of stretched exponential growth with exponent $<1/2$, is amenable (as a countable discrete group). For shifts of polynomial grow…
Given a transformation $T$ of a standard measure space $(X,μ)$, let $\Cal M(T)$ denote the set of spectral multiplicities of the Koopman operator $U_T$ defined in $L^2(X,μ)\ominus\Bbb C$ by $U_Tf:=f\circ T$. It is discussed in this survey paper which subsets of $\Bbb N\cup\{\infty\}$ are realizable as $\Cal M(T)$ for various $T$: ergodic, weakly mixing, mixing, Gaussian, Poisson, ergodic infinite measure preserving, etc. The corresponding constructions are considered in detail. Generalizations to actions of Abelian locally compact second countable groups are also discussed.
The focus of this paper is the phenomenon of rigidity for measure-preserving actions of countable discrete abelian groups and its interactions with weak mixing and recurrence. We prove that results about $\mathbb{Z}$-actions extend to this setting: 1. If $(a_n)$ is a rigidity sequence for an ergodic measure-preserving system, then it is a rigidity sequence for some weakly mixing system. 2. There exists a sequence $(r_n)$ such that every translate is both a rigidity sequence and a set of recurrence. The first of these results was shown for $\mathbb{Z}$-actions by Adams, Fayad and Thouvenot, and…
Let $Σ_{A}(\mathbb{N})$ be a topologically mixing countable Markov shift with the BIP property over the alphabet $\mathbb{N}$ and $f: Σ_{A}(\mathbb{N}) \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ a potential satisfying the Walters condition with finite Gurevich pressure. Under suitable hypotheses, we prove the existence of a Large Deviation Principle for the family $(μ_β)_{β> 0}$ where each $μ_β$ is the Gibbs measure associated to the potential $βf$. Our main theorem generalizes from finite to countable alphabets and also to a larger class of potentials a previous result of A. Baraviera, A. O. Lopes and P. Thieul…
We provide a simple criterion for a non-singular and conservative Bernouilli action to have a weakly mixing Maharam extension. As an application, we show that every countable amenable group admits a stable type III_1 Bernoulli action, answering a recent question by Vaes and Wahl.
For Γa countable amenable group consider those actions of Γas measure-preserving transformations of a standard probability space, written as {T_γ}_{γ\in Γ} acting on (X,{\cal F}, μ). We say {T_γ}_{γ\inΓ} has completely positive entropy (or simply cpe for short) if for any finite and nontrivial partition P of X the entropy h(T,P) is not zero. Our goal is to demonstrate what is well known for actions of \Bbb Z and even \Bbb Z^d, that actions of completely positive entropy have very strong mixing properties. Let S_i be a list of finite subsets of Γ. We say the S_i spread if any particular γ\neq i…
We establish that there are non-mixing maps that are mixing on appropriate sequences including sequences $(s_i)$ which satisfy the Rajchman dissociated property. Our examples are based on the staircase rank one construction, $M$-towers constructions and the Gaussian transformations. As a consequence, we obtain there are non-mixing maps which are mixing along the squares. We further prove that a sequence $M=(m_n)$ is a mixing sequence for some weak mixing ${1}/{2}$-rigid transformation $T$ if and only if the complement of $M$ is a thick set. This result is generalized to ${r}/{(r+1)}$-rigid tra…
We prove the following version of the Furstenberg-Zimmer structure theorem for stationary actions: Any stationary action of a locally compact second-countable group is a weakly mixing extension of a measure-preserving distal system.
We introduce a new isomorphism-invariant notion of entropy for measure preserving actions of arbitrary countable groups on probability spaces, which we call orbital Rokhlin entropy. It employs Danilenko's orbital approach to entropy of a partition, and is motivated by Seward's recent generalization of Rokhlin entropy from amenable to general groups. A key ingredient in our approach is the use of an auxiliary probability-measure-preserving hyperfinite equivalence relation. Under the assumption of ergodicity of the auxiliary equivalence relation, our main result is a Shannon-McMillan-Breiman poi…
