This paper is on the spectral efficiency (SE) of a dense multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). The channels are spatially correlated and the multi-slope path loss model is considered. In our framework, the channel state information is obtained by using pilot sequences and the BSs are deployed randomly. First, we study the channel estimation accuracy and its impact on the SE as the BS density increases and the network becomes densified. Second, we consider the special case of uncorrelated channels for which the stochastic geometry framework helps us to simplify the SE expressions and obtain the minimum value of antenna-UE ratio over which the pilot contamination is dominant rather than the inter- and intra-cell interference. Finally, we provide some insights into the obtained SE for the spatially correlated channels, from a multi-cell processing scheme as well as the single-cell ones in terms of the BS density. Our results show that while all the detectors result in non-increasing SE in terms of the BS density, their area SE increases exponentially as the network becomes densified. Moreover, we conclude that in order to achieve a given SE, the required value of antenna-UE ratio decreases as the level of channel correlation increases.
In this work, we investigate the sum-rate performance of multicell and cell-free massive MIMO systems using linear precoding and multiuser scheduling algorithms. We consider the use of a network-centric clustering approach to reduce the computational complexity of the techniques applied to the cell-free system. We then develop a greedy algorithm that considers multiple candidates for the subset of users to be scheduled and that approaches the performance of the optimal exhaustive search. We assess the proposed and existing scheduling algorithms in both multicell and cell-free networks with the…
This paper proposes a linear interference alignment (IA) scheme which can be used for uplink channels in a general multicell multiuser MIMO cellular network. The proposed scheme aims to align interference caused by signals from a set of transmitters into a subspace which is established by the signals from only a subset of those transmitters, thereby effectively reducing the number of interfering transmitters. The total degrees of freedom (DoF) achievable by the proposed scheme is given in closed-form expression, and a numerical analysis shows that the proposed scheme can achieve the optimal Do…
This paper addresses cooperation in a multicell environment where base stations (BSs) wish to jointly serve multiple users, under a constrained-capacity backhaul. We point out that for finite backhaul capacity a trade-off between sharing user data, which allows for full MIMO cooperation, and not doing so, which reduces the setup to an interference channel but also requires less overhead, emerges. We optimize this trade-off by formulating a rate splitting approach in which non-shared data (private to each transmitter) and shared data are superposed. We derive the corresponding achievable rate r…
We study the performance region of a general multicell downlink scenario with multiantenna transmitters, hardware impairments, and low-complexity receivers that treat interference as noise. The Pareto boundary of this region describes all efficient resource allocations, but is generally hard to compute. We propose a novel explicit characterization that gives Pareto optimal transmit strategies using a set of positive parameters---fewer than in prior work. We also propose an implicit characterization that requires even fewer parameters and guarantees to find the Pareto boundary for every choice …
This work considers the downlink of a multicell massive MIMO system in which $L$ base stations (BSs) of $N$ antennas each communicate with $K$ single-antenna user equipments randomly positioned in the coverage area. Within this setting, we are interested in evaluating the sum rate of the system when MRT and RZF are employed under the assumption that each intracell link forms a MIMO Rician fading channel. The analysis is conducted assuming that $N$ and $K$ grow large with a non-trivial ratio $N/K$ under the assumption that the data transmission in each cell is affected by channel estimation err…
This paper compares two important downlink multicell interference mitigation techniques, namely, large-scale (LS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and network MIMO. We consider a cooperative wireless cellular system operating in time-division duplex (TDD) mode, wherein each cooperating cluster includes $B$ base-stations (BSs), each equipped with multiple antennas and scheduling $K$ single-antenna users. In an LS-MIMO system, each BS employs $BM$ antennas not only to serve its scheduled users, but also to null out interference caused to the other users within the cooperating cluster using …
This paper analyzes the performance of multicell massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems with variable-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). In such an architecture, each ADC uses arbitrary quantization resolution to save power and hardware cost. Along this direction, we first introduce a quantization-aware channel estimator based on additive quantization noise model (AQNM) and linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) estimate theory. Afterwards, by leveraging on the estimated channel state information (CSI), we derive the asymptotic expressions of achievable uplin…
Many practical wireless communications systems select their transmit rate from a finite set of modulation and coding schemes, which correspond to a set of discrete rates. In this paper, we therefore formulate a joint coordinated precoding and discrete rate selection problem for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multicell networks. Compared to the common assumption of using the continuous Shannon rates as the user utilities, explicitly accounting for the discrete rates more accurately models practical wireless communication systems. The optimization problem that we formulate is combinatoria…
We study the maximum sum rate optimization problem in the multiple-input multiple-output interfering broadcast channel. The multiple-antenna transmitters and receivers are assumed to have perfect channel state information. In this setting, finding the optimal linear transceiver design is an NP-hard problem. We show that a reformulation of the problem renders the application of generalized Benders decomposition suitable. The decomposition provides us with an optimization structure which we exploit to apply two different optimization approaches. While one approach is guaranteed to converge to a …
This paper considers distributed linear beamforming in downlink multicell multiuser orthogonal frequency-division multiple access networks. A fast convergent solution maximizing the weighted sum- rate with per base station (BS) transmiting power constraint is formulated. We approximate the non- convex weighted sum-rate maximization (WSRM) problem with a semidefinite relaxed solvable convex form by means of a series of approximation based on interference alignment (IA) analysis. The WSRM optimization is a two-stage optimization process. In the first stage, the IA conditions are satisfied. In th…
We study the converse and achievability for the degrees of freedom of the multicellular multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC) with constant channel coefficients. We assume L>1 homogeneous cells with K>0 users per cell where the users have M antennas and the base stations are equipped with N antennas. The degrees of freedom outer bound for this L-cell and K-user MIMO MAC is formulated. The characterized outer bound uses insight from a limit on the total degrees of freedom for the L-cell heterogeneous MIMO network. We also show through an example that a scheme selec…
We consider a homogeneous multiple cellular scenario with multiple users per cell, i.e., $K\geq 1$ where $K$ denotes the number of users in a cell. In this scenario, a degrees of freedom outer bound as well as an achievable scheme that attains the degrees of freedom outer bound of the multicell multiple access channel (MAC) with constant channel coefficients are investigated. The users have $M$ antennas, and the base stations are equipped with $N$ antennas. The found outer bound is general in that it characterizes a degrees of freedom upper bound for $K\geq 1$ and $L>1$ where $L$ denotes the n…
We consider the uplink of a multicell multiuser multiple-input multiple-output system where the channel experiences both small and large-scale fading. The data detection is done by using the linear zero-forcing technique, assuming the base station (BS) has perfect channel state information. We derive new, exact closed-form expressions for the uplink rate, symbol error rate, and outage probability per user, as well as a lower bound on the achievable rate. This bound is very tight and becomes exact in the large-number-of-antennas limit. We further study the asymptotic system performance in the r…
An important challenge of wireless networks is to boost the cell edge performance and enable multi-stream transmissions to cell edge users. Interference mitigation techniques relying on multiple antennas and coordination among cells are nowadays heavily studied in the literature. Typical strategies in OFDMA networks include coordinated scheduling, beamforming and power control. In this paper, we propose a novel and practical type of coordination for OFDMA downlink networks relying on multiple antennas at the transmitter and the receiver. The transmission ranks, i.e.\ the number of transmitted …
In this work, we consider the joint precoding across K transmitters (TXs), sharing the knowledge of the user's data symbols to be transmitted towards K single-antenna receivers (RXs). We consider a distributed channel state information (DCSI) configuration where each TX has its own local estimate of the overall multiuser MIMO channel. The focus of this work is on the optimization of the allocation of the CSI feedback subject to a constraint on the total sharing through the backhaul network. Building upon the Wyner model, we derive a new approach to allocate the CSI feedback while making effici…
This paper investigates the sum-rate gains brought by power allocation strategies in multicell massive multipleinput multiple-output systems, assuming time-division duplex transmission. For both uplink and downlink, we derive tractable expressions for the achievable rate with zero-forcing receivers and precoders respectively. To avoid high complexity joint optimization across the network, we propose a scheduling mechanism for power allocation, where in a single time slot, only cells that do not interfere with each other adjust their transmit powers. Based on this, corresponding transmit power …
In this work, we present a solution for coordinated beamforming and power allocation when base stations employ a massive number of antennas equipped with low-resolution analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters. We address total power minimization problems of the coarsely quantized uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) communication systems with target signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints. By combining the UL problem with minimum mean square error combiners and deriving the Lagrangian dual of the DL problem, we prove UL-DL duality and show there is no duality gap even wi…
The throughput of users with poor channel conditions, such as those at a cell edge, is a bottleneck in wireless systems. A major part of the power budget must be allocated to serve these users in guaranteeing their quality-of-service (QoS) requirement, hampering QoS for other users and thus compromising the system reliability. In nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA), the message intended for a user with a poor channel condition is decoded by itself and by another user with a better channel condition. The message intended for the latter is then successively decoded by itself after canceling the…
In this paper, we investigate a coordinated multipoint (CoMP) beamforming and power control problem for base stations (BSs) with a massive number of antenna arrays under coarse quantization at low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converter (DACs). Unlike high-resolution ADC and DAC systems, non-negligible quantization noise that needs to be considered in CoMP design makes the problem more challenging. We first formulate total power minimization problems of both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) systems subject to signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) con…
This paper concerns the feasibility of full-duplex large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) cellular systems. We first propose a pilot transmission scheme and assess its performance, specifically the ergodic sum-rate. The proposed scheme -- the simultaneous pilot transmission (SPT) -- enables to reduce pilot overhead, where the pilot overhead depends on the number of antennas at the base station (BS), since the self-interference channel has to be estimated. We consider two multicell scenarios-- cooperative and non-cooperative multicell systems--, and derive the analytic model of the e…
Interference is emerging as a fundamental bottleneck in many important wireless communication scenarios, including dense cellular networks and cognitive networks with spectrum sharing by multiple service providers. Although multipleantenna (MIMO) signal processing is known to offer useful degrees of freedom to cancel interference, extreme-value theoretic analysis recently showed that, even in the absence of MIMO processing, the scaling law of the capacity in the number of users for a multi-cell network with and without inter-cell interference was asymptotically identical provided a simple sign…
In this paper, we study upper bounds on the sum capacity of the downlink multicell processing model with finite backhaul capacity for the simple case of 2 base stations and 2 mobile users. It is modelled as a two-user multiple access diamond channel. It consists of a first hop from the central processor to the base stations via orthogonal links of finite capacity, and the second hop from the base stations to the mobile users via a Gaussian interference channel. The converse is derived using the converse tools of the multiple access diamond channel and that of the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channe…
Since the seminal paper by Marzetta from 2010, Massive MIMO has changed from being a theoretical concept with an infinite number of antennas to a practical technology. The key concepts are adopted in 5G and base stations (BSs) with $M=64$ full-digital transceivers have been commercially deployed in sub-6\,GHz bands. The fast progress was enabled by many solid research contributions of which the vast majority assume spatially uncorrelated channels and signal processing schemes developed for single-cell operation. These assumptions make the performance analysis and optimization of Massive MIMO t…
In this paper, the downlink of a typical massive MIMO system is studied when each base station is composed of three antenna arrays with directional antenna elements serving 120 degrees of the two-dimensional space. A lower bound for the achievable rate is provided. Furthermore, a power optimization problem is formulated and as a result, centralized and decentralized power allocation schemes are proposed. The simulation results reveal that using directional antennas at base stations along with sectoring can lead to a notable increase in the achievable rates by increasing the received signal pow…
In multicell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks, base stations (BSs) with multiple antennas deliver their radio frequency energy in the downlink, and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices use their harvested energy to support uplink data transmission. This paper investigates the energy efficiency (EE) problem for multicell massive MIMO NOMA networks with wireless power transfer (WPT). To maximize the EE of the network, we propose a novel joint power, time, antenna selection, and subcarrier resource allocation scheme, which can properly alloc…
Optimizing the sum-log-utility for the downlink of multi-frequency band, multiuser, multiantenna networks requires joint solutions to the associated beamforming and user scheduling problems through the use of cloud radio access network (CRAN) architecture; optimizing such a network is, however, non-convex and NP-hard. In this paper, we present a novel iterative beamforming and scheduling strategy based on fractional programming and the Hungarian algorithm. The beamforming strategy allows us to iteratively maximize the chosen objective function in a fashion similar to block coordinate ascent. F…
We consider the problem of linear transceiver design to achieve max-min fairness in a downlink MIMO multicell network. This problem can be formulated as maximizing the minimum rate among all the users in an interfering broadcast channel (IBC). In this paper we show that when the number of antennas is at least two at each of the transmitters and the receivers, the min rate maximization problem is NP-hard in the number of users. Moreover, we develop a low-complexity algorithm for this problem by iteratively solving a sequence of convex subproblems, and establish its global convergence to a stati…
We study support for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications through a cell-free massive MIMO architecture. Under the general assumption that the propagation channel between the mobile stations, either UAVs or ground users, and the access points follows a Ricean distribution, we derive closed form spectral efficiency lower bounds for uplink and downlink with linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) channel estimation. We also propose power allocation and user scheduling strategies for such a system. Our numerical results reveal that a cell-free massive MIMO architecture may provide better…
MIMO communication may provide high spectral efficiency through the deployment of a very large number of antenna elements at the base stations. The gains from massive MIMO communication come from the use of multi-user MIMO on the uplink and downlink, but with a large excess of antennas at the base station compared to the number of served users. Initial work on massive MIMO did not fully address several practical issues associated with its deployment. This paper considers the impact of channel aging on the performance of massive MIMO systems. The effects of channel variation are characterized a…
Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) provides great improvements in spectral efficiency over legacy cellular networks, by coherent combining of the signals over a large antenna array and by spatial multiplexing of many users. Since its inception, the coherent interference caused by pilot contamination has been believed to be an impairment that does not vanish, even with an unlimited number of antennas. In this work, we show that this belief is incorrect and an artifact from using simplistic channel models and suboptimal signal processing schemes. We focus on the uplink and prove that …
We consider the uplink of a Massive MIMO network with $L$ cells, each comprising a BS with $M$ antennas and $K$ single-antenna user equipments. Recently, [1] studied the asymptotic spectral efficiency of such networks with optimal multicell minimum mean-squared error (M-MMSE) processing when $M\to \infty$ and $K$ is kept fixed. Remarkably, [1] proved that, for practical channels with spatial correlation, the spectral efficiency grows unboundedly, even with pilot contamination. In this paper, we extend the analysis from [1] to the alternative regime in which $M,K\to \infty$ with a given ratio. …
This correspondence proposes a new rotated codebook for three-dimensional (3D) multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system under spatially correlated channel. To avoid the problem of high dimensionality led by large antenna array, the rotation matrix in the rotated codebook is proposed to be decomposed by Tucker decomposition into three lowdimensional units, i.e., statistical channel direction information in horizontal and vertical directions respectively, and statistical channel power in the joint horizontal and vertical direction. A closed-form suboptimal solution is provided to reduce the comput…
This study investigates the mean capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems for spatially semi-correlated flat fading channels. In reality, the capacity degrades dramatic due to the channel covariance (CC) when correlations exist at the transmitter or receiver or on both sides. Most existing works have so far considered the traditional channel covariance matrices that have not been entirely constructed. Thus, we propose an iterative channel covariance (ICC) matrix using a matrix splitting (MS) technique with a guaranteed zero correlations coefficient in the case of the downlink …
We consider the uplink of massive multipleinput multiple-output systems in a multicell environment. Since the base station (BS) estimates the channel state information (CSI) using the pilot signals transmitted from the users, each BS will have imperfect CSI in practice. Assuming zero-forcing method to eliminate the multi-user interference, we derive the exact analytical expressions for the probability density function (PDF) of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), the corresponding achievable rate, the outage probability, and the symbol error rate (SER) when the BS has imperfect …
This letter investigates the secure communication in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system exploiting artificial noise (AN). We first derive a closed-form expression of the ergodic secrecy rate under spatially correlated MIMO channels. By using this derived result, we further optimize the power fraction of AN in closed form and the RIS phase shifts by developing a gradient-based algorithm, which requires only statistical channel state information (CSI). Our analysis shows that spatial correlation at the RIS provides an a…
The capacity of cellular networks can be improved by the unprecedented array gain and spatial multiplexing offered by Massive MIMO. Since its inception, the coherent interference caused by pilot contamination has been believed to create a finite capacity limit, as the number of antennas goes to infinity. In this paper, we prove that this is incorrect and an artifact from using simplistic channel models and suboptimal precoding/combining schemes. We show that with multicell MMSE precoding/combining and a tiny amount of spatial channel correlation or large-scale fading variations over the array,…
Today, MIMO has become an indispensable scheme for providing significant spectral efficiency in wireless communication and for future wireless system, recently, it goes to two extremes: massive MIMO and single-RF MIMO. This paper, which is put in the latter, utilizes load-modulated arrays with only reactance loads for single-RF transmission of spatially multiplexed QAM signals. To alleviate the need for iterative processes while considering mutual coupling in the compact antenna, we present a novel design methodology for the loading network, which enables the exact computation of the three rea…
We consider the uplink of massive multicell multiple-input multiple-output systems, where the base stations (BSs), equipped with massive arrays, serve simultaneously several terminals in the same frequency band. We assume that the BS estimates the channel from uplink training, and then uses the maximum ratio combining technique to detect the signals transmitted from all terminals in its own cell. We propose an optimal resource allocation scheme which jointly selects the training duration, training signal power, and data signal power in order to maximize the sum spectral efficiency, for a given…
In this paper, the performance of a secure massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system adopting low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs) is analyzed over spatially correlated wireless channels. A tight lower bound for the achievable secrecy rate is derived with artificial noise (AN) transmitted in the null space of the user channels. Using the analytical results, the impact of spatial correlation on the secrecy rate is explicitly evaluated in the presence of low-resolution DACs. The analytical observations reveal that using low-resolution DACs can be beneficial to the secrec…
Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) precoding is an efficient scheme that may significantly enhance the communication link. However, this enhancement comes with a cost. Many precoding schemes require channel knowledge at the transmitter that is obtained through feedback from the receiver. Focusing on the natural common fusion of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and MIMO, we exploit the channel correlation in the frequency and spatial domain to reduce the required feedback rate in a frequency division duplex (FDD) system. The proposed feedback method is based on Huffman codin…
Downlink channel estimation with low pilot overhead is an important and challenging problem in large-scale MIMO systems due to the substantially increased MIMO channel dimension. In this letter, we propose a block iterative support detection (block-ISD) based algorithm for downlink channel estimation to reduce the pilot overhead, which is achieved by fully exploiting the block sparsity inherent in the block-sparse equivalent channel derived from the spatial correlations of MIMO channels. Furthermore, unlike conventional compressive sensing (CS) algorithms that rely on prior knowledge of the sp…
This paper considers the uplink (UL) of a multi-cell Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system with spatially correlated Rician fading channels. The channel model is composed of a deterministic line-of-sight (LoS) path and a stochastic non-line-of-sight (NLoS) component describing a spatially correlated multipath environment. We derive the statistical properties of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) and least-square (LS) channel estimates for this model. Using these estimates for maximum ratio (MR) combining, rigorous closed-form UL spectral efficiency (SE) expressions are derive…
This paper proposes a codebook for jointly quantizing channel direction information (CDI) of spatially correlated three-dimensional (3D) multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) channels. To reduce the dimension for quantizing the CDI of large antenna arrays, we introduce a special structure to the codewords by using Tucker decomposition to exploit the unique features of 3D MIMO channels. Specifically, the codeword consists of four parts each with low dimension individually targeting at a different type of information: statistical CDIs in horizontal direction and in vertical direction, statistical powe…
Holographic MIMO is a spatially-constrained MIMO system with a massive number of antennas, possibly thought of, in its ultimate form, as a spatially-continuous electromagnetic aperture. Accurate and tractable channel modeling is critical to understanding the full potential of this technology. This paper considers arbitrary spatially-stationary scattering and provides a 4D plane-wave representation in Cartesian coordinates, which captures the essence of electromagnetic propagation and allows to evaluate the capacity of Holographic MIMO systems with rectangular volumetric arrays. The developed f…
This paper considers multi-cell Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems where the channels are spatially correlated Rician fading. The channel model is composed of a deterministic line-of-sight (LoS) path and a stochastic non-line-of-sight (NLoS) component describing a practical spatially correlated multipath environment. We derive the statistical properties of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE), element-wise MMSE (EW-MMSE), and least-square (LS) channel estimates for this model. Using these estimates for maximum ratio (MR) combining and precoding, rigorous closed-form uplink …
Low-resolution digital-to-analog converter (DAC) has shown great potential in facilitating cost- and power-efficient implementation of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We investigate the performance of a massive MIMO downlink network with low-resolution DACs using regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. It serves multiple receivers equipped with finite-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). By taking the quantization errors at both the transmitter and receivers into account under spatially correlated channels, the regularization parameter for RZF is optimized w…
In terahertz (THz) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the combination of huge bandwidth and massive antennas results in severe beam split, thus making the conventional phase-shifter based hybrid precoding architecture ineffective. With the incorporation of true-time-delay (TTD) lines in the hardware implementation of the analog precoders, delay-phase precoding (DPP) emerges as a promising architecture to effectively overcome beam split. However, existing DPP approaches suffer from poor performance, high complexity, and weak robustness in practical THz channels. In this pape…
The outage performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique has received intense attention in order to ensure the reliability requirement for mission-critical machine-type communication (cMTC) applications. In this paper, the outage probability is asymptotically studied for MIMO channels to thoroughly investigate the transmission reliability. To fully capture the spatial correlation effects, the MIMO fading channel matrix is modelled according to three types of Kronecker correlation structure, i.e., independent, semi-correlated and full-correlated Rayleigh MIMO channels. The outa…
Pilot contamination is a limiting factor in multicell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems because it can severely impair channel estimation. Prior works have suggested coordinating pilot design across cells in order to reduce the channel estimation error caused by pilot contamination. In this paper, we propose a method for coordinated pilot design using fractional programming to minimize the weighted mean squared-error (MSE) in channel estimation. In particular, we apply the recently proposed quadratic transform to the MSE expression which allows the effect of pilot contamina…
We consider a multicell MIMO uplink channel where each base station (BS) is equipped with a large number of antennas N. The BSs are assumed to estimate their channels based on pilot sequences sent by the user terminals (UTs). Recent work has shown that, as N grows infinitely large, (i) the simplest form of user detection, i.e., the matched filter (MF), becomes optimal, (ii) the transmit power per UT can be made arbitrarily small, (iii) the system performance is limited by pilot contamination. The aim of this paper is to assess to which extent the above conclusions hold true for large, but fini…
We propose pilot reuse (PR) in single cell for massive multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission to reduce the pilot overhead. For spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels, we establish a relationship between channel spatial correlations and channel power angle spectrum when the base station antenna number tends to infinity. With this channel model, we show that sum mean square error (MSE) of channel estimation can be minimized provided that channel angle of arrival intervals of the user terminals reusing the pilots are non-overlapping, which shows feasibility of PR ove…
In this work, salient characteristics of a wireless communication system deploying a great number of antennas in the base station (BS), namely Massive MIMO system, are investigated. In particular, we found a simple and meaningful relationship that corroborates a fundamental assumption in recent related works: according the number of BS antennas $N$ grows, the product of the small-scale fading channel matrix with its conjugate transpose tends to a scaled identity, with a variability measure inversely proportional to $N$. Furthermore, analysis of the Massive MIMO system downlink is carried out f…
Channel measurements show that significant spatially non-wide-sense-stationary characteristics rise in massive MIMO channels. Notable parameter variations are experienced along the base station array, such as the average received energy at each antenna, and the directions of arrival of signals impinging on different parts of the array. In this paper, a new channel model is proposed to describe this spatial non-stationarity in massive MIMO channels by incorporating the concepts of partially visible clusters and wholly visible clusters. Furthermore, a closed-form expression of an upper bound on …
