Let $D$ be a division ring and $K$ a subfield of $D$ which is not necessarily contained in the center $F$ of $D$. In this paper, we study the structure of $D$ under the condition of left algebraicity of certain subsets of $D$ over $K$. Among results, it is proved that if $D^*$ contains a noncentral normal subgroup which is left algebraic over $K$ of bounded degree $d$, then $[D:F]\le d^2$. In case $K=F$, the obtained results show that if either all additive commutators or all multiplicative commutators with respect to a noncentral subnormal subgroup of $D^*$ are algebraic of bounded degree $d$ over $F$, then $[D:F]\le d^2$.
Let $D$ be a division ring with center $F$ and $N$ a subnormal subgroup of the multiplicative group $D^*$ of $D$. Assume that $N$ contains a non-abelian solvable subgroup. In this paper, we study the problem on the existence of non-abelian free subgroups in $N$. In particular, we show that if either $N$ is algebraic over $F$ or $F$ is uncountable, then $N$ contains a non-abelian free subgroup.
Let $D$ be a division ring with infinite center, $K$ a proper division subring of $D$ and $N$ an almost subnormal subgroup of the multiplicative group $D^*$ of $D$. The aim of this paper is to show that if $K$ is $N$-invariant and $N$ is non-central, then $K$ is central. Some examples of almost subnormal subgroups in division rings that are not subnormal are also given.
Let $D$ be a division ring with center $F$, and $G$ a subnormal or quasinormal subgroup of $D^*$. We show that if $G$ is locally solvable, then $G$ is contained in $F$.
In this paper we study non-central almost subnormal subgroups of the multiplicative group of a division ring satisfying a non-zero generalized rational identity. The main result generalizes Chiba's theorem on subnormal subgroups. As an application, we get a theorem on almost subnormal subgroups satisfying a generalized algebraic rational identity. The last theorem has several corollaries which generalize completely or partially some previous results.
In this note, we introduce a new concept of a {\it generalized algebraic rational identity} to investigate the structure of division rings. The main theorem asserts that if a non-central subnormal subgroup $N$ of the multiplicative group $D^*$ of a division ring $D$ with center $F$ satisfies a non-trivial generalized algebraic rational identity of bounded degree, then $D$ is a finite dimensional vector space over $F$. This generalizes some previous results.
Let $D$ be a division ring, $n$ a positive integer, and GL$_n(D)$ the general linear group of degree $n$ over $D$. In this paper, we study the induced subgraph of the intersection graph of GL$_n(D)$ generated by all non-trivial proper almost subnormal subgroups of GL$_n(D)$. We show that this subgraph is complete if it is non-null. This property will be used to study subgroup structure of a division ring. In particular, we prove that every non-central almost subnormal subgroup of the multiplicative group $D^*$ of a division ring $D$ contains a non-central subnormal subgroup of $D^*$.
In this paper, we study almost subnormal subgroups of the general linear group $\GL_n(D)$ of degree $n\ge 1$ over a division ring $D$ that satisfy a generalized power central group identity.
Let $D$ be a non-commutative division ring, $G$ a subnormal subgroup of ${\mathrm GL}_n(D)$. In this note we show that if $G$ contains a non-abelian solvable maximal subgroup, then $n=1$ and $D$ is a cyclic algebra of prime degree over $F$.
Let $D$ be a weakly locally finite division ring and $n$ a positive integer. In this paper, we investigate the problem on the existence of non-cyclic free subgroups in non-central almost subnormal subgroups of the general linear group ${\rm GL}_n(D)$. Further, some applications of this fact are also investigated. In particular, all infinite finitely generated almost subnormal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_n(D)$ are described.
Let $D$ be a division ring with infinite center, $n$ be a positive integer and $w(x_1,x_2,\cdots, x_m)=1$ be a generalized group identity over the general linear group $\GL_n(D)$. The aim of this paper is to prove that every subnormal subgroup of $GL_n(D)$ which satisfies the generalized group identity $w(x_1,x_2,\cdots, x_m)=1$ is central.
In this paper we prove that every non-central subnormal subgroup of the multiplicative group of a weakly locally finite division ring contains free non-cyclic subgroups.
We give an example of a division ring $D$ whose multiplicative commutator subgroup does not generate $D$ as a vector space over its centre, thus disproving the conjecture posed in the paper "Vector space generated by the multiplicative commutators of a division ring, J. Algebra Appl. 12 (2013), no. 8".
Let D be a division ring with centre F. Let T(D) be the vector space over F generated by all multiplicative commutators in D. In [1], authors have conjectured that every division ring is generated as a vector space over its centre by all of its multiplicative commutators. In this note it is shown that if D is centrally finite, then the conjecture holds.
Let $D$ be a division ring. In this paper, we investigate properties of subgroups of an arbitrary subnormal subgroup of the multiplicative group $D^*$ of $D$. The new obtained results generalize some previous results on subgroups of $D^*$.
In Hai-Thin (2009), there is a theorem, stating that every locally nilpotent subnormal subgroup in a division ring $D$ is central (see Hai-Thin (2009, Th. 2.2)). Unfortunately, there is some mistake in the proof of this theorem. In this note we give the another proof of this theorem.
Let $D$ be a division ring with center $F$, and $G$ a subnormal subgroup of $D^*$. We show that if $G$ is a locally solvable group such that $G^{(i)}$ is algebraic over $F$, then $G$ must be central. Also, if $M$ is non-abelian locally solvable maximal subgroup of $G$ with $M^{(i)}$ algebraic over $F$, then $D$ is a cyclic algebra of prime degree over $F$.
In his seminal paper, half a century ago, Hyman Bass established a commutator formula in the setting of (stable) general linear group which was the key step in defining the K_1 group. Namely, he proved that for an associative ring A with identity, E(A)=[E(A),E(A)]=[GL(A),GL(A)] where GL(A) is the stable general linear group and E(A) is its elementary subgroup. Since then, various commutator formulas have been studied in stable and non-stable settings, and for a range of classical and algebraic like-groups, mostly in relation to subnormal subgroups of these groups. The major classical theorems …
Let $R$ be an associative ring with ${\bf 1}$ which is not commutative. Assume that any non-zero commutator $v\in R$ satisfies: $v^2$ is in the center of $R$ and $v$ is not a zero-divisor. (Note that our assumptions do not include finite dimensionality.) We prove that $R$ has no zero divisors, and that if ${\rm char(R)}\ne 2,$ then the localization of $R$ at its center is a quaternion division algebra.
The study of the existence of free groups in skew linear groups have been begun since the last decades of the 20-th century. The starting point is the theorem of Tits (1972), now often is referred as Tits' Alternative, stating that every finitely generated subgroup of the general linear group $\GL_n(F)$ over a field $F$ either contains a non-cyclic free subgroup or it is solvable-by-finite. In this paper, we study the existence of non-cyclic free subgroups in maximal subgroups of an almost subnormal subgroup of the general skew linear group over a locally finite division ring.
Let D be a division ring finite dimensional over its center F. The goal of this paper is to prove that for any positive integer n there exists a in D^(n); the n-th multiplicative derived subgroup, such that F(a) is a maximal subfield of D. We also show that a single depth-n iterated additive commutator would generate a maximal subfield of D.
We give an explicit description for a basis of a subgroup of finite index in the group of central units of the integral group ring $\Z G$ of a finite abelian-by-supersolvable group such that every cyclic subgroup of order not a divisor of 4 or 6 is subnormal in $G$. The basis elements turn out to be a natural product of conjugates of Bass units. This extends and generalizes a result of Jespers, Parmenter and Sehgal showing that the Bass units generate a subgroup of finite index in the center $\mathcal{Z} (\U (\Z G))$ of the unit group $\U (\Z G)$ in case $G$ is a finite nilpotent group. Next, …
