A formulation of nucleon-nucleon scattering is developed in which the S-matrix, rather than an effective-field theory (EFT) action, is the fundamental object. Spacetime plays no role in this description: the S-matrix is a trajectory that moves between RG fixed points in a compact theory space defined by unitarity. This theory space has a natural operator definition, and a geometric embedding of the unitarity constraints in four-dimensional Euclidean space yields a flat torus, which serves as the stage on which the S-matrix propagates. Trajectories with vanishing entanglement are special geodesics between RG fixed points on the flat torus, while entanglement is driven by an external potential. The system of equations describing S-matrix trajectories is in general complicated, however the very-low-energy S-matrix -- that appears at leading-order in the EFT description -- possesses a UV/IR conformal invariance which renders the system of equations integrable, and completely determines the potential. In this geometric viewpoint, inelasticity is in correspondence with the radius of a three-dimensional hyperbolic space whose two-dimensional boundary is the flat torus. This space has a singularity at vanishing radius, corresponding to maximal violation of unitarity. The trajectory on the flat torus boundary can be explicitly constructed from a bulk trajectory with a quantifiable error, providing a simple example of a holographic quantum error correcting code.
We study the properties of entanglement entropy among scattering particles as observed from different inertial moving frames, based on an exemplary QED process $e^+e^-\rightarrowμ^+μ^-$. By the explicit calculation of the Wigner rotation, the entanglement entropy of scattering particles is found to be Lorentz invariant. We also study the behavior of the entanglement between spin degrees of freedom for scattering particles in moving frames. This quantity, being found to change with different inertial reference frames, does not exhibit as a Lorentz invariant.
We derive a formula for the entanglement entropy of two regions in momentum space that is generated by the scattering of weakly interacting scalar particles. We discuss an example where weak interactions entangle momentum scales above and below an infrared cutoff.
In this paper we discuss the scattering effect on entanglement propagation in RCFTs. In our setup, we consider the time evolution of excited states created by the insertion of many local operators. Our results show that because of the finiteness of quantum dimension, entanglement is not changed after the scattering in RCFTs. In this mean, entanglement is conserved after the scattering event in RCFTs, which reflects the integrability of the system. Our results are also consistent with the free quasiparticle picture after the global quenches.
It is found that the differential cross section of photon-photon scattering is a function of the degree of polarization entanglement of the two-photon state. A reduced, general expression for the differential cross section of photon-photon scattering is derived by applying simple symmetry arguments. An explicit expression is obtained for the example of photon-photon scattering due to virtual electron-positron pairs in Quantum Electrodynamics. It is shown how the effect in this explicit example can be explained as an effect of quantum interference and that it fits with the idea of distance-depe…
In the context of the surface-state correspondence we propose the geodesic curvature of a convex curve as a local measure of factorization of the dual CFT state. Its integral will be interpreted as computing the bipartite entanglement among degrees of freedom with support on the chosen domain. We will derive results through application of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and show quantitative agreement with computations using the MERA tensor network and the formalism of entanglement density.
In this paper, we study the entanglement property of a 4-particle system. In this system, two initially entangled electrons A and C are scattered by two uncorrelated positrons B and D, respectively. We calculate the entanglements among the particles both before and after the double QED scattering ($AB\rightarrow AB, CD\rightarrow CD$). We find that the change of entanglement entropy between subsystems A and B during the scattering processs is proportional to the total cross section, $σ_{tot}=σ_{AB}\timesσ_{CD}$. Even though there is no direct interaction between subsystems A and C (or B and D)…
In AdS/CFT, there can exist local 2-to-2 bulk scattering processes even when local scattering is not possible on the boundary; these have previously been studied in connection with boundary correlation functions. We show that boundary regions associated with these scattering configurations must have $O(1/G_N)$ mutual information, and hence a connected entanglement wedge. One of us previously argued for this statement from the boundary theory using operational tools in quantum information theory. We improve that argument to make it robust to small errors and provide a proof in the bulk using fo…
We study the causal structure of the minimal surface of the four-gluon scattering, and find a world-sheet wormhole parametrized by Mandelstam variables, thereby demonstrate the EPR = ER relation for gluon scattering. We also propose that scattering amplitude is the change of the entanglement entropy by generalizing the holographic entanglement entropy of Ryu-Takayanagi to the case where two regions are divided in space-time.
We study the behavior of entanglement between different degrees of freedom of scattering fermions, based on an exemplary QED scattering process $e^+e^-\longrightarrowμ^+μ^-$. The variation of entanglement entropy between two fermions from an initial state to the final state was computed, with respect to different entanglement between the ingoing particles. This variation of entanglement entropy is found to be proportional to an area quantity, the total cross section. We also study the spin-momentum and helicity-momentum entanglements within one particle in the aforementioned scattering process…
We revisit the applications of integral geometry in AdS$_3$ and argue that the metric of the kinematic space can be realized as the entanglement contour, which is defined as the additive entanglement density. From the renormalization of the entanglement contour, we can holographically understand the operations of disentangler and isometry in multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz. Furthermore, a renormalization group equation of the long-distance entanglement contour is then derived. We then generalize this integral geometric construction to higher dimensions and in particular demonst…
In a scattering process, the final state is determined by an initial state and an S-matrix. We focus on two-particle scattering processes and consider the entanglement between these particles. For two types initial states; i.e., an unentangled state and an entangled one, we calculate perturbatively the change of entanglement entropy from the initial state to the final one. Then we show a few examples in a field theory and in quantum mechanics.
It is conjectured that the spatial structure of quantum field states is influenced by a new kind of directional indeterminacy of quantum geometry set by the Planck length, $l_P$, that does not occur in a classical background geometry. Entanglement of fields with geometry modifies the transverse phase of field states at wavelength $λ$ and propagation distance $cτ$ by about $ Δϕ\approx \sqrt{l_Pτ}/λ$. The new effect is not detectable in measurements of propagating states that depend only on longitudinal coordinates. The reduced information content of fields in large systems is consistent with ho…
This is a brief, popular-level introduction to holographic entanglement. It was published in the newsletter of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Bangalore.
The entanglement entropy in a quantum field theory between two regions of space has been shown in simple cases to be proportional to the volume of the hypersurface separating the regions. We prove that this is true for a free scalar field in an arbitrary geometry with purely spatial curvature and obtain a complete asymptotic expansion for the entropy.
Motivated by the close relations of the renormalization group with both the holography duality and the deep learning, we propose that the holographic geometry can emerge from deep learning the entanglement feature of a quantum many-body state. We develop a concrete algorithm, call the entanglement feature learning (EFL), based on the random tensor network (RTN) model for the tensor network holography. We show that each RTN can be mapped to a Boltzmann machine, trained by the entanglement entropies over all subregions of a given quantum many-body state. The goal is to construct the optimal RTN …
We provide an explicit connection between the differential generation of entanglement entropy in a tensor network representation of the ground states of two field theories, and a geometric description of these states based on the Fisher information metric. We show how the geometrical description remains invariant despite there is an irreducible gauge freedom in the definition of the tensor network. The results might help to understand how spacetimes may emerge from distributions of quantum states, or more concretely, from the structure of the quantum entanglement concomitant to those distribut…
We present a study of the evolution of entanglement entropy of matter and geometry in quantum cosmology. For a variety of Gaussian initial states and their linear combinations, and with evolution defined with respect to a relational time, we show numerically that (i) entanglement entropy increases rapidly at very early times, and subsequently saturates to a constant non-zero value, and (ii) that the saturation value of this entropy is a linear function of the energy associated to the quantum state: $S_{\text{ent}}^ψ= γ\langle \hat{H} \rangle_ψ$. These results suggest a remnant of quantum entan…
The differential cross section for gravitational photon-photon scattering calculated in Perturbative Quantum Gravity is shown to depend on the degree of polarization entanglement of the two photons. The interaction between photons in the symmetric Bell state is stronger than between not entangled photons. In contrast, the interaction between photons in the anti-symmetric Bell state is weaker than between not entangled photons. The results are interpreted in terms of quantum interference, and it is shown how they fit into the idea of distance-dependent forces.
We use the conformal invariance and the holographic correspondence to fully specify the dependence of entanglement entropy on the extrinsic geometry of the 2d surface $Σ$ that separates two subsystems of quantum strongly coupled ${\mathcal{N}}=4$ SU(N) superconformal gauge theory. We extend this result and calculate entanglement entropy of a generic 4d conformal field theory. As a byproduct, we obtain a closed-form expression for the entanglement entropy in flat space-time when $Σ$ is sphere $S_2$ and when $Σ$ is two-dimensional cylinder. The contribution of the type A conformal anomaly to ent…
We reconstruct entanglement thermodynamics by means of Hessian geometry, since this method exactly generalizes thermodynamics into much wider exponential family cases including quantum entanglement. Starting with the correct first law of entanglement thermodynamics, we derive that a proper choice of the Hessian potential leads to both of the entanglement entropy scaling for quantum critical systems and hyperbolic metric (or AdS space with imaginary time). We also derive geometric representation of the entanglement entropy in which the entropy is described as integration of local conserved curr…
Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) samples a part of the wave function of a hadron in the vicinity of the light cone. Lipatov constructed a spin chain which describes the amplitude of DIS in leading logarithmic approximation. Kharzeev and Levin proposed the entanglement entropy as an observable in DIS [Phys. Rev. D 95, 114008 (2017)], and suggested a relation between the entanglement entropy and parton distributions. Here we represent the DIS process as a local quench in the Lipatov's spin chain, and study the time evolution of the produced entanglement entropy. We show that the resulting entangl…
We show that, in discrete models of quantum gravity, emergent geometric space can be viewed as the entanglement pattern in a mixed quantum state of the "universe", characterized by a universal topological network entanglement. As a concrete example we analyze the recently proposed model in which geometry emerges due to the condensation of 4-cycles in random regular bipartite graphs, driven by the combinatorial Ollivier-Ricci curvature. Using this model we show that the emergence of geometric order decreases the entanglement entropy of random configurations. The lowest geometric entanglement en…
For a given entanglement entropy of QFT, we investigate how to reconstruct its dual geometry by applying the Ryu-Takayanagi formula and the deep learning method. In the holographic setup, the radial direction of the dual geometry is identified with the energy scale of the dual QFT. Therefore, the holographic dual geometry can describe how the QFT changes along the RG flow. Intriguingly, we show that the reconstructed geometry only from the entanglement entropy data can give us more information about other physical properties like thermodynamic quantities in the IR region.
In the setting of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase Matrix theory, dual to light-cone M-theory in a PP-wave background, we compute the Von Neumann entanglement entropy between a probe giant graviton and a source. We demonstrate that this entanglement entropy is directly and generally related to the local tidal acceleration experienced by the probe. This establishes a new map between local spacetime geometry and quantum entanglement, suggesting a mechanism through which geometry emerges from Matrix quantum mechanics. We extend this setting to light-cone M-theory in flat space, or the Banks-Fisch…
We examine how to construct a spatial manifold and its geometry from the entanglement structure of an abstract quantum state in Hilbert space. Given a decomposition of Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ into a tensor product of factors, we consider a class of "redundancy-constrained states" in $\mathcal{H}$ that generalize the area-law behavior for entanglement entropy usually found in condensed-matter systems with gapped local Hamiltonians. Using mutual information to define a distance measure on the graph, we employ classical multidimensional scaling to extract the best-fit spatial dimensionality o…
Relying on the mathematical analogy of the pure states of a two-qubit system with four-component Dirac spinors, we provide an alternative consideration of quantum entanglement using the mathematical formulation of Cartan's pure spinors. A result of our analysis is that the Cartan equation of two qubits state is entanglement sensitive in a way that the Dirac equation for fermions is mass sensitive. The Cartan equation for unentangled qubits is reduced to a pair of Cartan equations for single qubits as the Dirac equation for massless fermions separates into two Weyl equations. Finally, we establ…
We compute the entanglement entropy of minimally coupled scalar fields on subtracted geometry black hole backgrounds, focusing on the logarithmic corrections. We notice that matching between the entanglement entropy of original black holes and their subtracted counterparts is only at the order of the area term. The logarithmic correction term is not only different but also, in general, changes sign in the subtracted case. We apply Harrison transformations to the original black holes and find out the choice of the Harrison parameters for which the logarithmic corrections vanish.
We study the entanglement entropy between the two outgoing particles in an elastic scattering process. It is formulated within an S-matrix formalism using the partial wave expansion of two-body states, which plays a significant role in our computation. As a result, we obtain a novel formula that expresses the entanglement entropy in a high energy scattering by the use of physical observables, namely the elastic and total cross sections and a physical bound on the impact parameter range, related to the elastic differential cross-section.
We demonstrate that for general conformal field theories (CFTs), the entanglement for small perturbations of the vacuum is organized in a novel holographic way. For spherical entangling regions in a constant time slice, perturbations in the entanglement entropy are solutions of a Klein-Gordon equation in an auxiliary de Sitter (dS) spacetime. The role of the emergent time-like direction in dS is played by the size of the entangling sphere. For CFTs with extra conserved charges, e.g., higher spin charges, we show that each charge gives rise to a separate dynamical scalar field in dS.
Using Matrix theory, we propose a technique on how to compute the entangle- ment entropy between a supergravity probe and modes on a spherical membrane. We demonstrate that a membrane stretched between the probe and the sphere entangles these modes and can lead to an the entanglement entropy that encodes information about local gravitational geometry seen by the probe.
Constructing the corresponding geometries from given entanglement entropies of a boundary QFT is a big challenge and leads to the grand project \emph{ it from Qubit}. Based on the observation that the AdS metric in the Riemann Normal Coordinates (RNC) can be summed into a closed form, we find that the AdS$_3$ metric in RNC can be straightforwardly read off from the entanglement entropy of CFT$_2$. We use the finite length or finite temperature CFT$_2$ as examples to demonstrate the identification.
We study the target space entanglement entropy in a complex matrix model that describes the chiral primary sector in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, which is associated with the bubbling AdS geometry. The target space for the matrix model is a two-dimensional plane where the eigenvalues of the complex matrix distribute. The eigenvalues are viewed as the position coordinates of fermions, and the eigenvalue distribution corresponds to a droplet formed by the fermions. The droplet is identified with one that specifies a boundary condition in the bubbling geometry. We consider states in t…
We analyze the relationship between entanglement (or geometric) entropy with statistical mechanical entropy of horizon degrees of freedom when described in the framework of isolated horizons in loop quantum gravity. We show that, once the relevant degrees of freedom are identified, the two notions coincide. The key ingredient linking the two notions is the structure of quantum geometry at Planck scale implied by loop quantum gravity, where correlations between the inside and outside of the black hole are mediated by eigenstates of the horizon area operator.
In this talk I discuss some features of the entanglement entropy for fuzzy geometry, focusing on its dependence on the background fields and the spin connection of the emergent continuous manifold in a large $N$ limit. Using the Landau-Hall paradigm for fuzzy geometry, this is argued to be given by a generalized Chern-Simons form, making a point of connection with the thermodynamic view of gravity. Matter-gravity couplings are also considered in the same framework; they naturally lead to certain specific nonminimal couplings involving powers of the curvature.
We calculate the entanglement entropy of a slab of finite width in the pure Maxwell theory. We find that a large part of entropy is contributed by the entanglement of a mode, nonlocal in terms of the transverse magnetic field degrees of freedom. Even though the entangled mode is nonlocal, its contribution to the entropy is local in the sense that the entropy of a slab of a finite thickness is equal to the entropy of the boundary plus a correction exponential in thickness of the slab.
In the context of Matrix/light-cone gauge M-theory, we develop a new approach for computing quantum entanglement between a probe gravitating in the vicinity of a source mass and the source mass. We demonstrate that this entanglement is related to the gravitational potential energy between the two objects. We then show that the Von Neumann entropy is a function of two derivatives of the gravitational potential. We conjecture a relation between the entropy and the local Riemann tensor sampled by the probe, establishing a general scheme to relate entropy to local geometric data. This relation con…
In this note we present preliminary study on the relation between the quantum entanglement of boundary states and the quantum geometry in the bulk in the framework of spin networks. We conjecture that the emergence of space with non-zero volume reflects the non-perfectness of the $SU(2)$-invariant tensors. Specifically, we consider four-valent vertex with identical spins in spin networks. It turns out that when $j = 1/2$ and $j = 1$, the maximally entangled $SU(2)$-invariant tensors on the boundary correspond to the eigenstates of the volume square operator in the bulk, which indicates that th…
We consider defining a fuzzy space by a specific state in a fermionic field theory in terms of which all the observables for the space can be evaluated. This allows for a definition of entanglement for a fuzzy space by direct integration of the fields over a certain region. Even though the resulting formula for the entanglement entropy (EE) is similar to what has been used in the quantum Hall effect, our derivation provides a novel perspective. We also review and strengthen the arguments for the EE to be described by a generalized Chern-Simons form.
In analogy to the first law of thermodynamics, the increase in entanglement entropy $δS$ of a conformal field theory (CFT) is proportional to the increase in energy, $δE$, of the subsystem divided by an effective entanglement temperature, $T_E$. Extending this analogy, we study entanglement entropy when the subsystem is perturbed by applying an external field, expressed as a coupling to a local marginal operator in the CFT. We show that the resulting entropy change is associated with a change in the entanglement temperature itself, leading to an equation analogous to the Clausius relation. Usi…
Using non-linear evolution equations of QCD, we compute the von Neumann entropy of the system of partons resolved by deep inelastic scattering at a given Bjorken $x$ and momentum transfer $q^2 = - Q^2$. We interpret the result as the entropy of entanglement between the spatial region probed by deep inelastic scattering and the rest of the proton. At small $x$ the relation between the entanglement entropy $S(x)$ and the parton distribution $xG(x)$ becomes very simple: $S(x) = \ln[ xG(x) ]$. In this small $x$, large rapidity $Y$ regime, all partonic micro-states have equal probabilities -- the p…
It has been argued that the entropy which one is computing in the isolated horizon framework of loop quantum gravity is closely related to the entanglement entropy of the gravitational field and that the calculation performed is not restricted to horizons. We recall existing work on this issue and explain how recent work on generalising these computations to arbitrary spacetime dimensions D+1>2 supports this point of view and makes the duality between entanglement entropy and the entropy computed from counting boundary states manifest. In a certain semiclassical regime in 3+1 dimensions, this …
