In analogy to the first law of thermodynamics, the increase in entanglement entropy $δS$ of a conformal field theory (CFT) is proportional to the increase in energy, $δE$, of the subsystem divided by an effective entanglement temperature, $T_E$. Extending this analogy, we study entanglement entropy when the subsystem is perturbed by applying an external field, expressed as a coupling to a local marginal operator in the CFT. We show that the resulting entropy change is associated with a change in the entanglement temperature itself, leading to an equation analogous to the Clausius relation. Using AdS/CFT duality we develop a relationship between a perturbation in the local entanglement temperature, $δT_E(x)$ of the CFT and the perturbation of the bulk AdS metric. Using the AdS$_3$ minimal surface as a probe, we can construct bulk metric perturbations from an exact numerical computation of the entanglement temperature in a two dimensional $c=1$ boundary theory deformed by a marginal perturbation.
We study the null-polygonal minimal surfaces in AdS_4, which correspond to the gluon scattering amplitudes/Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling. The area of the minimal surfaces with n cusps is characterized by the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) integral equations or the Y-system of the homogeneous sine-Gordon model, which is regarded as the SU(n-4)_4/U(1)^{n-5} generalized parafermion theory perturbed by the weight-zero adjoint operators. Based on the relation to the TBA systems of the perturbed W minimal models, we solve the TBA equations by using the conformal pe…
The entanglement wedge cross section in holographic picture provides a geometrical description of the entanglement for mixed states. In this paper we study the inequalities for the entanglement wedge cross section in AdS/BCFT duality. In the presence of the boundary in conformal field theory (CFT), the dual entanglement wedge cross section exhibits abundant phase structures since the extremal surface may end on the brane. We present a universal treatment which is applicable for all the possible phases such that the inequalities for the entanglement wedge cross section can be proved in an algeb…
We calculate the expectation value of the Wilson line in the pure AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity theory and also the entanglement entropy in the boundary theory. Our one-loop calculation of entanglement entropy shows a shift of the central charge 26. Finally, we show that the Wilson line provides the equivalent description to the boundary entanglement entropy. This equivalence leads to a concrete example of the building of "minimum surface=entanglement entropy".
AdS plane waves describe simple backgrounds which are dual to anisotropically excited systems with energy fluxes. Upon dimensional reduction, they reduce to hyperscaling violating spacetimes: in particular, the $AdS_5$ plane wave is known to exhibit logarithmic behavior of the entanglement entropy. In this paper, we carry out an extensive study of the holographic entanglement entropy for strip-shaped subsystems in AdS plane wave backgrounds. We find that the results depend crucially on whether the strip is parallel or orthogonal to the energy current. In the latter case, we show that there is …
We compute the bulk entanglement entropy of a massive scalar field in a Poincare AdS with the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary condition when we trace out a half space. Moreover, by taking into account the quantum back reaction to the minimal surface area, we calculate how much the entanglement entropy changes under a double-trace deformation of a holographic CFT. In the AdS3/CFT2 setup, our result agrees with the known result in 2d CFTs. In higher dimensions, our results offer holographic predictions.
We establish our recently proposed holographic entanglement negativity conjecture for mixed states of adjacent subsystems in conformal field theories with concrete higher dimensional examples. In this context we compute the holographic entanglement negativity for mixed states of adjacent subsystems in $d$-dimensional conformal field theories dual to bulk $AdS_{d+1}$ vacuum and $AdS_{d+1}$-Schwarzschild black holes. These representative examples provide strong indication for the universality of our conjecture which affirms significant implications for diverse applications.
In this work, we investigate the thermodynamical behavior of charged AdS black holes from $f(R)$ gravity corrections with a constant Ricci scalar curvature in the grand-canonical ensemble. Using the holographic entanglement entropy, we show that the physical observables behave as in the case of the thermal entropy. By performing numerical computations associated with the thermodynamical quantities versus the entanglement entropy, we confirm that the same phase portrait persists in the holographic framework. In the grand-canonical ensemble, the present result supports the former finding which r…
In this paper, we consider AdS$_3$ with Comp$\grave{\mathrm{e}}$re-Song-Strominger (CSS) boundary conditions, under which the dual field theory is warped conformal field theory (WCFT), featuring a Virasoro-Kac-Moody algebra. We provide a holographic dual picture of the single interval entanglement entropy in WCFT in the bulk AdS$_3$. We explicitly show that the bulk object captures the entanglement entropy in WCFT is a massive spinning particle's worldline that anchored on the boundary of the interval. Given the mass and spin of the particle as functions of quantum numbers of the twist operato…
We continue our study of string theory in a background that interpolates between $AdS_3$ in the infrared and a linear dilaton spacetime $R^{1,1}\times R_ϕ$ in the UV. This background corresponds via holography to a $CFT_2$ deformed by an operator of dimension $(2,2)$. We discuss the structure of spatial entanglement in this model, and compare it to the closely related $T\bar T$ deformed $CFT_2$.
We consider backreacted $AdS_5 \times S^5$ coupled with $N_f$ massive flavors introduced by D7-branes. The backreacted geometry is in the Veneziano limit with fixed $N_f/N_c$. By dividing one of the directions into a line segment with length $l$, we get two subspaces. Then we calculate the entanglement entropy between them. With the method provided by Klebanov, Kutasov and Murugan, we are able to find the cut-off independent part of the entanglement entropy and finally find that this geometry shows no phase transition as the case in pure $AdS_5 \times S^5$.
We investigate the holographic entanglement entropy of deformed conformal field theories which are dual to a cutoff AdS space. The holographic entanglement entropy evaluated on a three-dimensional Poincare AdS space with a finite cutoff can be reinterpreted as that of the dual field theory deformed by either a boost or $T \bar{T}$ deformation. For the boost case, we show that, although it trivially acts on the underlying theory, it nontrivially affects the entanglement entropy due to the length contraction. For a three-dimensional AdS, we show that the effect of the boost transformation can be…
The effect of dark energy on the low and high temperature of strip region of the boundary field theory dual to AdS black holes was studied. In this framework, we investigate this behavior for different types of equation state and different regimes of normalization factor (a). We will see that the change of entanglement entropy is growing up with increasing a and |ω|.
We investigate the effect of non-locality on entanglement entropy in anti-de Sitter space-time. We compute entanglement entropy of a nonlocal field theory in anti-de Sitter space-time and find several interesting features. We find that area law is followed, but sub-leading terms are affected by non-locality. We also find that the UV finite term is universal. For the massless theory in 3 dimensional AdS we compute it exactly and find the novel feature that it shows oscillatory behavior.
We study the effect of charged excitations in the AdS spacetime on the first law of entanglement thermodynamics. It is found that `boosted' AdS black holes give rise to a more general form of first law which includes chemical potential and charge density. To obtain this result we have to resort to a second order perturbative calculation of entanglement entropy for small size subsystems. At first order the form of entanglement law remains unchanged even in the presence of charged excitations. But the thermodynamic quantities have to be appropriately `renormalized' at the second order due to the…
We propose a holographic entanglement negativity conjecture involving the bulk geometry, for mixed states of adjacent intervals in $(1+1)$-dimensional dual conformal field theories through the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence. The holographic entanglement negativity is obtained from a specific algebraic sum of the geodesics anchored on respective intervals on the boundary which reduces to the holographic mutual information between them. Utilizing our conjecture we obtain the entanglement negativity of adjacent intervals in zero and finite temperature ($1+1$)-dimensional holographic conformal field the…
The AdS-bubble solutions interestingly mimic Schrödinger-like geometries when expressed in light-cone coordinates. These D$p$ bubble vacuas exhibit asymmetric scaling property with a negative dynamical exponent of time $a<0$, but are smooth geometries. Through a time-like T-duality we map these vacua to E$p$-brane bubbles with $a>0$ in type II* super-strings. We obtain an expression for the entanglement entropy for `bubble E3-branes'. It is argued that the entropy from E3-bubbles has to be the lowest.
A deSitter brane-world bounding regions of anti-deSitter space has a macroscopic entropy given by one-quarter the area of the observer horizon. A proposed variant of the AdS/CFT correspondence gives a dual description of this cosmology as conformal field theory coupled to gravity in deSitter space. In the case of two-dimensional deSitter space this provides a microscopic derivation of the entropy, including the one-quarter, as quantum entanglement of the conformal field theory across the horizon.
We advance a holographic construction for the entanglement negativity of bipartite mixed state configurations of two disjoint intervals in $(1+1)$ dimensional conformal field theories ($CFT_{1+1}$) through the $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence. Our construction constitutes the large central charge analysis of the entanglement negativity for mixed states under consideration and involves a specific algebraic sum of bulk space like geodesics anchored on appropriate intervals in the dual $CFT_{1+1}$. The construction is utilized to compute the holographic entanglement negativity for such mixed states i…
We propose a covariant holographic entanglement negativity constructionfor time-dependent mixed states of adjacent intervals in $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal field theories dual to non-static bulk $\mathrm{AdS_3}$ configurations. Our construction applied to $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal field theories with a conserved charge dual to non-extremal and extremal rotating BTZ black holes exactly reproduces the corresponding replica technique results, in the large central charge limit. We also utilize our conjecture to obtain the time-dependent holographic entanglement negativity for the mixed state…
We consider backreacted $AdS_5 \times S^5$ coupled with $N_f$ massless flavors introduced by D7-branes at non-zero temperature. The backreacted geometry is in the Veneziano limit. The temperature of this system is related to the event horizon at $r_h$. Dividing one of the spatial directions into a line segment with length $l$, we will calculate the entanglement entropy between the two subspaces. We study the behavior near the event horizon, and finally find that there exists phase transition phenomenon near the event horizon since the difference between the entanglement entropy of the connecte…
Small variations of the entanglement entropy δS and the expectation value of the modular Hamiltonian δE are computed holographically for circular entangling curves in the boundary of AdS(4), using gravitational perturbations with general boundary conditions in spherical coordinates. Agreement with the first law of thermodynamics, δS = δE, requires that the line element of the entangling curve remains constant. In this context, we also find a manifestation of electric-magnetic duality for the entanglement entropy and the corresponding modular Hamiltonian, following from the holographic energy-m…
We advance a construction for the covariant holographic entanglement negativity for time dependent mixed states of disjoint intervals in $(1+1)$ dimensional conformal field theories ($CFT_{1+1}$) dual to bulk non static $AdS_3$ geometries. Application of our proposal to such mixed states in a $CFT_{1+1}$ dual to bulk non extremal and extremal rotating BTZ black holes exactly reproduces the replica technique results in the large central charge limit. We also investigate the time dependent holographic entanglement negativity for such mixed states in a $CFT_{1+1}$ dual to a bulk Vaidya-$AdS_3$ ge…
The purpose of this report is to provide a framework for defining phase transition processes in two dimensional holographic superconductors, and to illustrate how they are useful to be described by holographic entanglement entropy. We study holographic entanglement entropy in a two dimensional fully backrected model for holographic superconductors. We prove that phase transition could be observe using a discontinuty in the first order of entropy.
We propose a holographic entanglement entropy prescription for general states and regions in two models of holography beyond AdS/CFT known as flat$_3$/BMSFT and (W)AdS$_3$/WCFT. Flat$_3$/BMSFT is a candidate of holography for asymptotically flat three-dimensional spacetimes, while (W)AdS$_3$/WCFT is relevant in the study of black holes in the real world. In particular, the boundary theories are examples of quantum field theories that feature an infinite dimensional symmetry group but break Lorentz invariance. Our holographic entanglement entropy proposal is given by the area of a swing surface…
$AdS$ plane wave backgrounds are dual to CFT excited states with energy momentum density $T_{++}=Q$. Building on previous work on entanglement entropy in these and nonconformal brane plane wave backgrounds, we first describe a phenomenological scaling picture for entanglement in terms of "entangling partons". We then study aspects of holographic mutual information in these backgrounds for two strip shaped subsystems, aligned parallel or orthogonal to the flux. We focus on the wide ($Ql^d\gg 1$) and narrow ($Ql^d\ll 1$) strip regimes. In the wide strip regime, mutual information exhibits growth…
In arXiv:1601.02634 it was observed that asymptotic boundary conditions play an important role in the study of holographic entanglement beyond AdS/CFT. In particular, the Ryu-Takayanagi proposal must be modified for warped AdS$_3$ (WAdS$_3$) with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this paper, we consider AdS$_3$ and WAdS$_3$ with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. The conjectured holographic duals are warped conformal field theories (WCFTs), featuring a Virasoro-Kac-Moody algebra. We provide a holographic calculation of the entanglement entropy and Rényi entropy using AdS$_3$/WCFT and WAdS$…

The Ryu-Takayanagi conjecture predicts a holographic dual of the entanglement entropy of a CFT. It proposes that the entanglement entropy is given by the area of the minimal surface in the dual spacetime. In the semi-classical limit, this conjecture is supported by the saddle point approximation. If there are multiple classical solutions, it is assumed that only the minimal action contributes to the entanglement entropy. However, we will point out that these saddles equally contribute to the entanglement entropy in some cases. Therefore, the derivation of the conjecture is incomplete if there …
We describe some remarkable properties of the so-called Information Metric on instanton moduli space. This Metric is manifestly gauge and conformally invariant and coincides with the Euclidean AdS_5 metric on the one-instanton SU(2) moduli space for the standard metric on R^4. We propose that for an arbitrary boundary metric the AdS/CFT bulk space-time is the instanton moduli space equipped with the Information Metric. To test this proposal, we examine the variation of the instanton moduli and the Information Metric for first-order perturbations of the boundary metric and obtain three non-triv…

We extend standard results for vacuum asymptotically locally AdS (AlAdS) spacetimes, showing that such spacetimes can be constructed as foliations where the induced metric on each hypersurface satisfies Einstein's equation with stress-energy. By an appropriate choice of stress-energy on the hypersurfaces, the resulting AlAdS spacetime satisfies Einstein's equation with a negative cosmological constant and physical stress tensor. We use this construction to obtain AlAdS solutions whose boundaries are FRW cosmologies sourced by a massless scalar field or by a perfect fluid obeying the strong ene…
Since euclidean global AdS_2 space represented as a strip has two boundaries, the state / operator correspondence in the dual CFT_1 reduces to the standard map from the operators acting on a single copy of the Hilbert space to states in the tensor product of two copies of the Hilbert space. Using this picture we argue that the corresponding states in the dual string theory living on AdS_2 x K are described by twisted version of the Hartle-Hawking states, the twists being generated by a large unitary group of symmetries that this string theory must possess. This formalism makes natural the dual…
We investigate the behaviors of holographic entanglement entropy for AdS soliton geometries in the presence of higher derivative corrections. We calculate the leading higher derivative corrections for the AdS5 setup in type IIB string and for the AdS4,7 ones in M-theory. We also study the holographic entanglement entropy in Gauss-Bonnet gravity and study how the confinement/deconfinement phase transition observed in AdS solitons is affected by the higher derivative corrections.
We use direct Kaluza-Klein reduction to calculate the spectrum of spin-2 modes around a warped product of AdS_4 and a certain squashed and stretched 7-sphere. The modes turn out to be polynomials in the four complex variables parameterizing the sphere, and their complex conjugates. The background, which possesses U(1)_R x SU(3) symmetry, has been conjectured to be dual to a U(N) x U(N) N=2 superconformal Chern-Simons theory with a sextic superpotential. We find that the U(1)_R x SU(3) quantum numbers of spin-2 modes are in agreement with those determined in arXiv:0809.3773 through a group theo…
We compute entanglement entropy and differential entropy in inhomogeneous holographic quenches in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$. The quenches are arbitrarily inhomogeneous and modeled by an infalling shell of massless non-rotating matter where the final state is not dual to a static black hole but rather to a black hole with time-dependent stress-energy tensor modes. We study the entanglement entropy of an interval and differential entropy of a family of intervals analytically when the inhomogeneities have a perturbative amplitude and numerically for non-perturbative inhomogeneities. While we are in princip…
A superpotential deformation that is cubic in one of the chiral superfields of ABJM makes the latter theory flow into a new, ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal phase. This is holographically dual to a warped $\textrm{AdS}_4 \times_w S^7$ solution of M-theory equipped with a squashed and stretched metric on $S^7$. We determine the spectrum of spin-2 operators of the cubic deformation at low energies by computing the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons over the dual AdS$_4$ solution. We calculate, numerically, the complete graviton spectrum and, analytically, the spectrum of gravitons that belong t…
Recent work has shown that entanglement and the structure of spacetime are intimately related. One way to investigate this is to begin with an entanglement entropy in a conformal field theory (CFT) and use the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the bulk metric. We perform this calculation for ABJM, a particular 3-dimensional supersymmetric CFT (SCFT), in its ground state. In particular we are able to reconstruct the pure AdS4 metric from the holographic entanglement entropy of the boundary ABJM theory in its ground state. Moreover, we are able to predict the correct AdS radius purely from ent…
We show that the anti-de Sitter(AdS) space naturally emerges from the conformal field theory(CFT). The behavior of the leading divergent term in the entanglement entropy implies the underlying AdS geometry. The coefficient of the leading divergent term is related to the radius of the AdS space. All these are confirmed fully for the two dimensional CFTs. We also give comments for the higher dimensional CFTs.
Using a holographic proposal for the entanglement entropy we study its behavior in various supergravity backgrounds. We are particularly interested in the possibility of using the entanglement entropy as way to detect transitions induced by the presence horizons. We consider several geometries with horizons: the black hole in $AdS_3$, nonextremal Dp-branes, dyonic black holes asymptotically to $AdS_4$ and also Schwarzschild black holes in global $AdS_p$ coordinates. Generically, we find that the entanglement entropy does not exhibit a transition, that is, one of the two possible configurations…
We compute the holographic entanglement entropy and subregion complexity of spherical boundary subregions in the uncharged and charged AdS black hole backgrounds, with the \textbf{change} in these quantities being defined with respect to the pure AdS result. This calculation is done perturbatively in the parameter $\frac{R}{z_{\rm h}}$, where $z_{\rm h}$ is the black hole horizon and $R$ is the radius of the entangling region. We provide analytic formulae for these quantities as functions of the boundary spacetime dimension $d$ including several orders higher than previously computed. We obser…
The strong subadditivity is the most important inequality which entanglement entropy satisfies. Based on the AdS/CFT conjecture, entanglement entropy in CFT is equal to the area of the minimal surface in AdS space. It is known that a Wilson loop can also be holographically computed from the minimal surface in AdS space. In this paper, we argue that Wilson loops also satisfy a similar inequality, and find several evidences of it.
In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence linearized field equations of vector and antisymmetric tensor gauge fields around an AdS background are obtained from the entanglement first law of CFTs. The holographic charged entanglement entropy contains a term depending on the gauge field in addition to the Ryu-Takayanagi formula.

We use the notion of double holography to study Hawking radiation emitted by the eternal BTZ black hole in equilibrium with a thermal bath, but in the form of warped CFT$_2$ degrees of freedom. In agreement with the literature, we find entanglement islands and a phase transition in the entanglement surface, but our results differ significantly from work in AdS/CFT in three major ways: (1) the late-time entropy decreases in time, (2) island degrees of freedom exist at all times, and not just at late times, with the phase transition changing whether or not these degrees of freedom include the bl…
We point out that the entropy of (near) extremal black holes can be interpreted as the entanglement entropy of dual conformal quantum mechanics via AdS2/CFT1. As an explicit example, we study near extremal BTZ black holes and derive this claim from AdS3/CFT2. We also analytically compute the entanglement entropy in the two dimensional CFT of a free Dirac fermion compactified on a circle at finite temperature. From this result, we clarify the relation between the thermal entropy and entanglement entropy, which is essential for the entanglement interpretation of black hole entropy.
We develop a general approach to simplify the derivation of the holographic Weyl anomaly. As an application, we derive the holographic Weyl anomaly from general higher derivative gravity in asymptotically $AdS_{5}$ and $AdS_{7}$. Interestingly, to derive all the central charges of 4d and 6d CFTs, we make no use of equations of motion. Following Myers' idea, we propose a formula of holographic entanglement entropy for higher derivative gravity in asymptotically $AdS_5$. Applying this formula, we obtain the correct universal term of entanglement entropy for 4d CFTs. It turns out that our formula…
